Definitions

  • Pressure sensitive tapes are well known in the commercial world but have had disadvantages due to strength., cost and tearability in use. Most such tapes have employed fabrics as the carrier substrate with a film layer on one side and an adhesive layer on the other side for adhesion to the desired product.
  • Figure 1 is a schematic cross-section of the substrate for an adhesive tape
  • Figure 2 is a schematic representation of the process to produce the substrate of Figure 1;
  • Figure 3 is a new schematic similar to Figure 1 with an adhesive adhered to one side of the substrate.
  • the pressure sensitive tape substrate 10 is shown in cross- section which in the preferred form of the invention has an upper extruded film 12 of low density polyethylene (LDPE) on the upper surface, a weft inserted, warp knit carrier fabric 14 below the film 12 and a lower extruded film of low density polyethylene 15 to which the adhesive 16 ( Figure 3) is applied to provide a pressure sensitive tape 18.
  • the carrier fabric 14, illustrated is a warp knit, weft insertion fabric with a chain stitch knit, base construction using a 40 denier, continuous filament, polyester yarn while the weft inserted yarn is a 150 denier, textured, polyester continuous filament yarn to provide a 100% synthetic carrier fabric.
  • This is the preferred carrier fabric but other fabrics such as woven and/or non- woven fabrics composed of filament or staple fibers may be used depending on the intended use of the pressure sensitive tape 18.
  • the adhesives 18 employed to prepare the novel tapes of this invention may be any of those heretofore employed in the art for preparing tapes, the selection of which per se comprises no part of this invention. It may, for example, be any of the per se known and commercially available rubber-based or acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives.

  • the adhesive should be sufficiently aggressive to adhere well to the contemplated substrates, e.g. glass, metal, plastic, etc., but should also be characterized as having good unwind from the adhesive tape roll and no discernible adhesion stick after removal.
  • the films 12 and 14 are extruded LDPE as shown in Figure 2.
  • the carrier fabric 14 is supplied from a supply roll 20 and guided into the nip of rolls 22 and 24 by a guide roll 26 whereat LDPE is extruded from the extruder 28 into the nip of roll 22 and a temperature controlled roll 24 onto one side of the carrier fabric 14.
  • the fabric 14 is guided by rolls 30, 31, and 32 into the nip of roll 34 and a temperature controlled roll 36 whereat LDPE is extruded onto the other side of the fabric 14 from the extruder 38.
  • From the nip of rolls 34 and 36 the coated fabric is guided to the take-up roll 40 by guide rolls 42 and 44.
  • control of the thickness of the films 12 and 15 allows control of the tearability of the tape 18 depending on the intended use of the tape.
  • the upper film 12 is 2.0 mils thick and the lower film is
  • the film thicknesses vary between 0.5 to 3.0 mils and clearly indicate that the tearability of the tape varies as the various films vary in thickness.
  • the pressure sensitive tape has a substrate which has a LDPE film in both sides of a carrier fabric which can be varied in thickness to control the tearability of the tape. Also having two layers of film provides one surface which can be smooth for aesthetics and the other surface roughened for adhesive to the desired adhesion. It should be understood that LDPE film is preferred but other blends with or without other polymers can be used so long as the characteristics of same provide an adhesive tape of the type desired to perform the desired job.
