- these devices are basically manufactured according to the following methods: a) heat sealing: the sheets are joined by heat, creating alveoli or cells that contain sodium metabisulfite; and b) lamination: the sheets are bonded using an adhesive material in which the sodium metabisulfite is dispersed.
- such a device is known as a laminate with two cover layers based on materials permeable to water vapor and sulfur dioxide between which a substrate is arranged as a generator of sulfur dioxide, so that moisture can penetrate through both layers to the substrate generating the said sulfur dioxide that is emitted to the outside through both layers of cover.
- the substrate can be provided as an adhesive substance in which the sulfur dioxide generating product is dispersed.
- SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26) substrate on both sides, as indicated by the incoming arrows, as well as the transfer abroad, also on both sides, as indicated by the outgoing arrows, of sulphurous anhydride that is produced by the chemical reaction of water with the substrate material. As indicated, the transfer of water vapor and sulphurous anhydride is carried out on both sides.
- one of said sheets (210, 310, 410), intended to occupy the opposite side to the fruit to be preserved, is impervious to water vapor and sulfur dioxide by using materials that prevent the transfer of water vapor and sulphurous anhydride gas outwards; and the other sheet (211, 311, 411), the one designed to face the fruit to be preserved, is semipermeable to both water vapor and sulfur dioxide.

- sheet 410 is impermeable to water vapor and sulfur dioxide, sheet 411 being semipermeable to both gases.
- An additional advantage of the unidirectional generator is the elimination of the risk of overexposure to sulfur dioxide gas. This overexposure is due to the humidity generated by the condensed water on the surface of the plastic bag very close to the upper face of the generator, opposite to the fruit.
- the effect is a generator that is stable to dampening and does not raise the rate of generation of sulfur dioxide gas.
- the waterproof sheets suggested by this invention can be used in any of the modalities set forth for the manufacture of generators, i.e. thermo-sealed.
