- Surfboards are usually equipped with one or more fins, more commonly three, attached to the back of the board, on the hull (bottom surface of the board).
- Two fixing methods exist one is to stick the fins on the board to make them integral, the other is to have removable and interchangeable fins via a housing or a mounting insert incorporated in the board.
- Traditional fins are usually made using a plate composed of a multitude of layers of glass fabric and resin, machined or shaped by hand. They are then made integral with the board by gluing with glass fabrics, unidirectional fiber and resin. This method of attachment allows to establish at the root a peripheral connection fillet to improve the hydrodynamic characteristics at the base of the fins.
