Definitions
- the present invention belongs to the field of the chemical industry, more specifically to the area of agricultural chemistry and horticulture, such as the development of compositions and methods for the post-harvest treatment of fruits and vegetables.
- Fungicides are subjected to a lot of pollutant pressure that causes problems of little efficacy and resistance.
- the result of all the above is that there are more and more problems of rotting, resistance and therefore of customer complaints, as well as every time there are higher demands in certain markets that the fruits have the least possible number of fungicide residues or are treated with products (such as food additives, plant extracts, products recognized as GRAS, elicitors, etc.) with the least environmental and toxicological impact possible, minimizing the application of synthetic fungicides.
- the object of this invention is to obtain an alternative method of protection against postharvest rot where it is required under or nonexistent use of synthetic fungicides, or as a combined treatment to reduce the use of synthetic fungicides or for the control or inhibition of resistance incidents in normal treatments.
- the present invention relates to the control of post-harvest diseases of fruits and vegetables with the joint use of compositions with synergistic effects, comprising the joint application of a fortifying formulation (elicitor) based on phosphite salts and / or a fungicidal formulation of synthesis of the family of phosphonates or aluminum salts of ethyl phosphonic acid (such as Fosetil-AI), with a main formulation that is a formulation based on plant extracts.
- the application of the formulations is carried out in drain, bath or spray, separately or jointly (in the same composition), in the line of preparation in post-harvest treatments of fruits and vegetables, having also achieved a stable and suitable composition for these purposes which is composed of the formulations mentioned above. Description of the invention
- the main object of this invention is therefore a method for the post-harvest treatment of fruits and / or vegetables which comprises applying simultaneously and in combination: a first formulation, aqueous or in the form of emulsifiable concentrate, comprising at least one plant extract and which is applied in solution in water at a non-phytotoxic concentration, and
- a second formulation in the form of emulsifiable concentrate, of soluble liquid or of concentrated suspension and which is applied in aqueous solution, selected from the group consisting of:
- plant extract is understood as the active ingredients extracted from plants, fruits and vegetables in general, and which are usually essential oils of the type aldehydes, terpenes or phenols.
- Non-phytotoxic concentration is understood to be the appropriate concentration to which the plant extract can be applied in combination with the other formulations to achieve the proposed objectives, to that concentration of the extract at which no significant deterioration is detected. of the fruits and / or vegetables on which it is applied.
- non-significant deterioration means the concentration of extract equal to or below which no staining or burning of the fruit occurs due to the corrosive effect of the treatment.
- the appropriate dose depends on the plant extract used in the formulation, so it can vary greatly depending on its composition; for example, the appropriate dose for an extract of cinnamon or any other containing cinnamaldehyde is equal to or less than 1500 ppm, while for other extracts containing mostly eugenol, the non-phytotoxic concentration is equal to or less than 500 ppm.
- the present invention was proposed to solve this problem in several ways.
- the first was combining the formulation of the plant extract at non-phytotoxic concentrations (for example, less than 500 ppm for eugenol, less than 1500 for cinnamon extract, which contains a minimum of 70% cinnamaldehyde) with other natural products or elicitors (phyto-fortifiers) so that synergistic effectiveness achieved levels similar to those achieved with phytotoxicity problems, but without these occurring.
- the second was the search for products that allowed reducing the phytotoxicity problems caused by plant extracts. Such phytotoxicity problems are generally caused by oxidation, given the chemical characteristics of the products used (phenols, aldehydes, terpenes, etc.).
- the object of the invention is the application by means of drain, bath or spray of formulations comprising natural extracts and reductive formulations.
- a synergistic effect of fungicidal efficacy in the control of fruit and vegetable diseases as well as the reducing effect of the elicitor (phosphite salt) and / or phosphonate-based synthesis fungicide, which reduce the phytotoxic oxidative effect of plant extracts.
- the basis of the invention thus consists in the synergy that takes place as a result of the joint application of the components, in such a way that they have sufficient fungicidal efficacy, avoiding all possible phytotoxicity problems that may arise due to the plant extract.
- phosphite salts not only have a phyto-fortifying or elicitor effect (favoring the defenses against fungi of the fruit itself), but also chemically have a reducing character, that is, they oxidize, so with their oxidation in The presence of oxidants (as is the case with natural extracts) can protect the skin from the fruits of the potential phytotoxicity produced by them, giving a synergistic effect between both components.
- oxidants as is the case with natural extracts
- a synthesis fungicide of a very similar chemical structure, the salts of ethyl phosphonic acid also has a reducing character that helped to achieve the absence of any phytotoxic effect by oxidation of natural extracts in its application.
- the joint application of phosphite phosphite salts and / or fungicidal salts of the phosphonate family is promoted by the present invention to reduce the oxidizing effect of natural extracts.
- said joint action provided a synergistic effect in the control of postharvest diseases that also helped to reduce the application dose of natural extracts from 5000 ppm to less than 1500 ppm and preferably between 500-1500 ppm, so that the risk of phytotoxicity is further reduced, providing good efficacy. This as will be seen in the examples has been demonstrated and forms the basis of the invention.
- the formulations described herein can be applied mixed with coatings and waxes commonly applied for this type of edible products.
- the formulations mixed with the coatings and waxes are applied by spray.
- a second object of the present invention is a composition for the control and treatment of postharvest or dessert diseases collection of fruits and / or vegetables as described above, that is:
- aqueous or in the form of an emulsifiable concentrate comprising at least one plant extract and applied in solution in water at a non-phytotoxic concentration
- a second formulation in the form of emulsifiable concentrate, of soluble liquid or of concentrated suspension and which is applied in aqueous solution, selected from the group consisting of:
- a phyto-fortifying formulation containing at least one phosphite salt ⁇ a fungicidal formulation containing at least one synthesis fungicide of the phosphonate family; Y
- this alternative means for the control of diseases of dessert-collection of fruits and vegetables consists on the one hand in the joint, synergistic treatment of a first component, which is a formulation based on plant extracts, with a second component that is a phyto-fortifier (elicitor) of the fostito salt family.
- this synergistic treatment can also be the result of the joint application of a composition comprising the first component mentioned, which contains plant extracts, plus a second component which is a formulation based on a fungicide of the phosphonate family, such as, for example, the salts of ethyl phosphonic acid.
- a composition comprising the first component mentioned, which contains plant extracts, plus a second component which is a formulation based on a fungicide of the phosphonate family, such as, for example, the salts of ethyl phosphonic acid.
- a composition comprising the first component mentioned, which contains plant extracts, plus a second component which is a formulation based on a
- compositions of interest phosphite salts on the one hand and salts of the phosphonate family such as ethyl phosphonic acid on the other, offer efficacy in the control of postharvest diseases of fruits and / or vegetables , such as citrus fruits, so the joint application of natural extract formulations with elicitor and / or fungicidal formulations offered a simultaneous solution to both problems, lack of efficacy and phytotoxicity problems.
- a final object of the invention is the use of the composition defined in any of its forms and compositions for the treatment of post-harvest diseases of fruits and / or vegetables. Detailed description of the invention
- said application by means of drain, bath and spray can be carried out in one or more applications on the pieces to be treated after collection, although in the most preferred case with a single one is sufficient. More preferably, the formulations are applied before 48 hours after collection, preferably immediately after collection, with a time of application of the formulations between 30 seconds and 1 minute, the most preferred time being 40 seconds.
- the first formulation is an emulsifiable concentrated formulation. Also preferably, it contains the plant extract in a percentage by weight of the total formulation comprised between 1 and 50%, more preferably 30%.
- the plant extract may be an extract selected from the group consisting of clove extract, cinnamon extract, citrus extract, garlic extract and other similar vegetables and plants, or any combination thereof.
- Said plant extract which may be of the family of aldehydes, phenols or terpenes of plant origin is preferably an extract containing mostly eugenol, such as clove extract, although it is more preferably a plant extract containing cinnamaldehyde (aldehyde). cinnamic), as is cinnamon extract.
- Cinnamon extract has as a major component cinnamaldehyde in more than 70% in concentration.
- Cinnamaldehyde is an aldehyde known as cinnamaldehyde, used industrially as a perfume and flavoring agent.
- cinnamaldehyde used industrially as a perfume and flavoring agent.
- Cinnamaldehyde being the main active ingredient of cinnamon extract, and this is a synthetic product existing in the industry, and is used extensively in the food industry, its use has great advantages in determining the combination of synergic lower use concentrations effectively , without phytotoxicity and without harmful effects on the fruit (such as phytotoxicity production).
- the first formulation based on plant extracts that is applied in the post-harvest treatment method contains the plant extract in an amount by weight / volume of the total composition equal to or less than 500 ppm of eugenol when it is an extract that It contains eugenol as a major component, this is in more than 60% of the extract composition, such as clove extract, or citrus extract or garlic extract, while said amount is equal to or less than 1500 ppm cinnamaldehyde when it is a plant extract with a composition greater than 70% in cinnamaldehyde, as is the case of cinnamon extract.
- an extract that It contains eugenol as a major component this is in more than 60% of the extract composition, such as clove extract, or citrus extract or garlic extract
- said amount is equal to or less than 1500 ppm cinnamaldehyde when it is a plant extract with a composition greater than 70% in cinnamaldehyde, as is the case of cinnamon extract.
- the plant extract containing the cinnamaldehyde as a major component is present in a proportion between 500 and 1500 ppm including both limits, this range being more preferably 900-1500 ppm.
- the formulation contains the plant extract in a specific percentage of 1000ppm. It should be noted that the amount of this component can be given both in relation to the amount of extract and in relation to the amount of the active compound it contains, in this case cinnamaldehyde, since it is known that an amount of 1500 ppm of extract Cinnamon contains approximately 1000 ppm cinnamaladehyde.
- the first formulation may in some cases comprise a combination of plant extracts, such as the extract containing cinnamaldehyde mentioned, thymol, eugenol and menthol, among others.
- the second formulation contains the active agent, that is the phyto-fortifying component or the synthetic fungicidal component in a percentage by weight / volume of the composition between 1500 and 2000 ppm including both limits, although when it is a phyto-fortifying formulation said percentage by weight is more preferably comprised between 1600 and 2000ppm, being more preferably even 1800ppm, and when it is a formulation based on a synthesis fungicide of the phosphonate family, it is preferably contained in the formulation in a percentage in weight / volume of the composition between 1500 and 2000ppm including both limits, the range of 1800-2000ppm being more preferable and being more preferably still 1800ppm.
- the second aqueous formulation is constituted by both formulations, the phyto-fortifier and the fungicide, then it contains said formulations in the percentages indicated above for each of them separately.
- the first formulation may further comprise other elements such as surfactants, emulsifiers and solvents.
- the first formulation may contain polysorbates, such as Polysorbate 80; copolymers such as Pluronic®, which is a triblock copolymer of formula HO (CH2CH2O) 20 (CH2CH (CH3) O) 70 (CH2CH2O) 20H and having a molecular weight of approximately 5800 Da; a solvent, such as propylene glycol; or other emulsifiers such as Polyethylene Glycol 400 Dioleate.
- polysorbates such as Polysorbate 80
- copolymers such as Pluronic®, which is a triblock copolymer of formula HO (CH2CH2O) 20 (CH2CH (CH3) O) 70 (CH2CH2O) 20H and having a molecular weight of approximately 5800 Da
- a solvent such as propylene glycol
- other emulsifiers such as Polyethylene Glycol 400 Dioleate.
- the first formulation has the following elements in part by volume of the total formulation:
- Vegetable extract 1-50% w / v
- the solvent may be selected from the group consisting of water, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, with more preferably propylene glycol.
- Polysorbate 80 apparently is of selection since the technical literature indicates that it allows a penetrability of the plant extract in the tissues that reduces its oxidizing effect, and therefore its phytotoxicity. However, as indicated in the examples, the phytotoxic effect at effective doses persists in its application in drencher, which is corrected by the present invention.
- the first formulation comprises cinnamon extract as a plant extract, and specifically comprises an equivalent proportion of cinnamaldehyde containing said extract comprised between 0.8% and 40% w / v, such that the following specific formulation results:
- the phosphite salt it contains is preferably selected from the group consisting of potassium phosphite, calcium phosphite and sodium phosphite and any combination thereof; although potassium phosphite and calcium phosphite salt are preferred over all.
- Said phyto-fortifying formulation may further comprise other elements such as surfactants (ionic and non-ionic), pH regulators, water or the like, resulting in a specific formulation such as the following: - Phosphite salts: 10-60%
- Nonionic surfactant 0-10%
- the fungicidal synthesis element of the phosphonate family can be selected from the group consisting of potassium phosphonate, aluminum phosphonate, calcium phosphonate and the salts of ethyl phosphonic acid. More preferably, it is selected from the salts of ethyl phosphonic acid, being more preferably still from the family of aluminum salts of ethyl phosphonic acid. In the most preferred case of all, the fungicide is Fosetil-AI (tri (ethyl phosphonate) aluminum).
- Said fungicidal formulation may comprise together with the synthesis fungicide other elements such as ionic and non-ionic surfactants, dispersants, thickeners, solvents and other similar elements.
- the fungicidal formulation is as follows, partly by volume of the total formulation:
- Ionic surfactants 0-10%
- Nonionic surfactants 0-10%
- Dispersants 0-10%
- the solvent may be selected from the group consisting of water, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, with more preferably propylene glycol. Numerous combinations of components were studied in the present invention, and it was observed that the best combination in terms of the properties sought was the joint application of a potassium phosphite formulation as a phyto-fortifying or phosphoryl-al formulation as a fungicidal formulation with an emulsifiable concentrated formulation. of cinnamon extract, whose applications on fruits and vegetables showed a very good behavior in the control of diseases, with total absence of phytotoxicity at the doses determined synergistic, as demonstrated in the proposed examples.
- the joint application of the formulations described per se presents sufficient fungicidal properties to be applied together as long as the pressure of the diseases due to fungi and bacteria is not very high, making in this case the total substitution of the use of fungicides of synthesis different from those described (from the family of salts of ethyl phosphonic acid).
- the pressure of the diseases is a subjective term that depends on the exporter of the product, in the scope of the present report it is understood by "not very high” that the level of daily rotten detected in the plant is lower than the average annual rot in the plant when conventional treatment was performed and is being controlled by the treatment of the invention.
- the fungicidal formulation described above in any of its variants additionally includes a second synthesis fungicide usually used in post-collection but which does not belong to the ethyl phosphonic acid salt family.
- a second synthesis fungicide usually used in post-collection but which does not belong to the ethyl phosphonic acid salt family.
- thiabendazole imazalil, orthophenylphenol, fludioxonil, pyrimethanil, propiconazole, tebuconazole, quaternary ammonium salts, DDAC, DDAC carbonate, guazatine, among others.
- this second fungicide is added, it should be done at lower or normal doses of use (that is, at a quarter or a half of the normal dose indicated on the commercial product label), taking advantage of the effect synergistic of the combination of the coating and increasing the residue of synthetic fungicides little.
- the risks of phytotoxicity production are very important, it is possible to meet the objectives set for the present invention thanks to the addition of the phyto-fortifier and / or fungicide, preferably in the form of a phosphorous acid salt (such as potassium phosphite) or preferably an ethyl phosphonic acid (fosetyl-al) salt, respectively.
- the method for the treatment of post-harvest diseases of fruits and / or vegetables has two main embodiments: in the first, the formulations are applied by drain, bath or spray separately but simultaneously.
- the aforementioned formulations in any of their variants, are part of a single composition, that is, they are parts or components of a composition developed for the treatment of diseases by the method described.

- the formulation contains the plant extract in a specific percentage of 1000ppm.
- the first component may in some cases comprise a combination of plant extracts, such as the extract containing cinnamaldehyde mentioned, thymol, eugenol and menthol, among others.
- the second component contains the active agent, that is the phyto-fortifying component or the fungicidal synthesis component in a percentage by weight / volume of the formulation between 1500 and 2000 ppm including both limits, although when it is a phyto-fortifying formulation said percentage by weight is more preferably comprised between 1600 and 2000ppm, being more preferably even 1800ppm, and when it is a formulation based on a synthesis fungicide of the phosphonate family, it is preferably contained in the formulation in a percentage in formulation weight / volume between 1500 and 2000ppm including both limits, the range of 1800-2000ppm being more preferable and even more preferably 1800ppm.

- the first component has the following elements in part by volume of the total component:
- Vegetable extract 1-50% w / v
- the solvent may be selected from the group consisting of water, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, with more preferably propylene glycol.
- the first component comprises cinnamon extract as a plant extract, and specifically an equivalent proportion of cinnamaldehyde containing said extract comprised between 0.8% and 40% w / v, such that the following specific formulation results:

- this second fungicide is added, it should be done at lower or normal doses of use (that is, at a quarter or a half of the normal dose indicated on the commercial product label), taking advantage of the synergistic effect of the coating combination and increasing little the synthetic fungicide residue.
- Figure 1 Photographs showing the existence of severe toxicity produced in the fruit when a composition based solely on cinnamaldehyde is applied according to Example 1.
- Figure 2 Photographs showing the phytotoxicity produced in the fruit when a cinnamonyl-based composition is applied as a vegetable extract combined with synthetic fungicides according to Example 2.
- the fruit to be treated was orange "Navelina” and mandarin orange “Clemenules”.
- the product was applied by industrial drain in the storage center of the pieces of fruit to be treated, with a single post-harvest application for 30 seconds, 24 hours after harvesting. Subsequently, the fruit was introduced in a chamber at room temperature for more than a month. It has been proven that all fruits presented to a greater or lesser extent spotted and phytotoxicity. As can be seen in Tables 1 and 2, the formulated based on plant extracts used has proven in its application in drainage at the doses applied its effectiveness in the control of citrus fruit rot. However, the phytotoxicity produced makes its commercial use unfeasible.
