Abstract

본 발명은 (S1) 전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되는 함량으로 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들을 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 0.95 내지 1.02 배가 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질과 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 제조하는 단계; (S2) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제1 혼합물을 고상반응이 진행되도록 1차 소성한 후 냉각시키는 단계; (S3) 상기 (S2)의 결과물에 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.00 내지 1.09 배가 되도록 제2 리튬 원료물질을 더 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 제조하는 단계: 및 (S4) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 소성하는 단계를 포함하는, 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법을 개시한다. 본 발명의 제조방법에 따르면, 수세 공정이 필요 없을 정도로 리튬 불순물 햠량이 저감된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질의 단입자들을 비교적 간단하게 제조할 수 있다.

Description

고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법, 이로부터 형성된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자 및 이를 포함하는 양극 및 리튬 이차전지
본 발명은 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 단입자 형태의 양극 활물질의 고상합성방법, 이로부터 형성된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자 및 이를 포함하는 양극 및 리튬 이차전지에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2020년 9월 24일자로 출원된 한국 특허출원 번호 제 10-2020-0124155호에 대한 우선권 주장 출원으로서, 해당 출원의 명세서에 개시된 모든 내용은 인용에 의해 본 출원에 원용된다.
높은 에너지 밀도를 나타내는 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질이 주목받고 있으나, 니켈함량이 높아짐에 따라 전지의 수명 안정성이 급격히 줄어드는 문제점이 있다. 수명 감소의 원인 중 하나는 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질의 구조와 관련된다.
1차 입자가 응집된 2차 입자의 형태로 된 통상적인 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질은 충전과 방전이 진행될수록 1차 입자간 계면에서 크랙이 발생하여 전지의 수명을 감소시킨다.
이에 따라 2차 입자 형태가 아닌 단입자 형태의 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질의 개발이 이루어지고 있다. 그레인 바운더리(Grain boundary)가 없는 단입자 형태의 양극 활물질은 마이크로 또는 매크로 크랙(micro/macro-crack)의 생성을 크게 줄일 수 있으므로, 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질의 구조적 안정성을 높인다.
고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질 단입자 제조시 탄산리튬 등의 리튬 불순물의 잔류량이 증가하는데, 이러한 불순물은 전해액과 반응하여 전지의 성능을 저하시키고 가스를 발생시키며 전극 슬러리 제조시 겔레이션 현상을 유발시킨다.
이러한 리튬 불순물의 함량을 낮추기 위하여 고함량의 Ni계 (Ni-rich) 리튬 양극활물질 단입자 제조후 물로 수세하는 공정을 거친다. 그러나 수세공정을 거치면 양극재의 표면이 화학적으로 불안정해지고 이로 인해 다양한 전기화학적 부반응을 발생시킬 우려가 있다. 또한, 고함량의 니켈 함유 (Ni-rich) 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질이 단입자 형태일 때, 수세시 리튬 불순물이 적게 제거된다는 문제점도 있다.
한편, 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물의 양극 활물질은 공침법을 이용하여 니켈망간코발트 수산화물과 같은 혼합 전이금속 수산화물을 제조한 후, 이를 리튬 원료 물질과 혼합하고 소성함으로써 제조한다. 그러나, 공침법을 이용한 양극활물질의 제조방법은 복잡하다는 단점이 있다.
따라서 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 제1 과제는 수세 공정이 필요 없을 정도로 리튬 불순물의 함량을 낮게 억제된 고함량 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법을 제공하는데 있다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 제2 과제는 비교적 경제적이고 용이하게 제조할 수 있는 고함량 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법을 제공하는데 있다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 제3 과제는 전술한 특성을 갖는 고함량 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자를 제공하는데 있다.
본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 제3 과제는 전술한 특성을 갖는 고함량 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자를 포함하는 양극 및 리튬 이차전지를 제공하는데 있다.
전술한 기술적 과제를 해결하기 위해, 본 발명의 제1 구현예에 따른 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법은,
(S1) 전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되는 함량으로 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들을 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 0.95 내지 1.02 배가 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질과 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 제조하는 단계;
(S2) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제1 혼합물을 고상반응이 진행되도록 1차 소성한 후 냉각시키는 단계;
(S3) 상기 (S2)의 결과물에 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.00 내지 1.09 배가 되도록 제2 리튬 원료물질을 더 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 제조하는 단계: 및
(S4) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 소성하는 단계를 포함한다.
본 발명의 제2 구현예에 따르면, 제1 구현예에 따른 고상합성방법에 있어서 상기 제2 리튬 원료물질의 혼합량은 전체 전이금속에 대한 제2 리튬 원료물질의 리튬 몰비율이 0.01 내지 0.07 배일 수 있다.
본 발명의 제3 구현예에 따르면, 상기 제1 구현예 또는 제2 구현예 중 어느 하나 이상의 구현예에 있어서 상기 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들은 니켈 원료분말, 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말을 포함할 수 있다.
이 때, 상기 니켈 원료분말은 니켈 옥사이드, 니켈 카보네이트, 니켈 설페이트, 니켈 하이드록사이드, 니켈 포스페이트 및 니켈 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고, 상기 코발트 원료분말은 코발트 옥사이드, 코발트 카보네이트, 코발트 설페이트, 코발트 하이드록사이드 및 코발트 포스페이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고, 상기 망간 원료분말은 망간 디옥사이드, 망간 카보네이트, 망간 설페이트 및 망간 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말은 서로 독립적으로 전체 전이금속에 대한 코발트 및 망간의 몰비율이 각각 10 몰% 이하가 되는 함량으로 혼합될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명의 제4 구현예에 따르면, 상기 제1 구현예 내지 제3 구현예 중 어느 하나 이상의 구현예에 있어서 상기 제1 리튬 원료물질 및 제2 리튬 원료물질은 서로 독립적으로 각각 수산화리튬, 수산화리튬 수화물 및 탄산리튬으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있다.
본 발명의 제5 구현예에 따르면, 상기 제1 구현예 내지 제4 구현예 중 어느 하나 이상의 구현예에 있어서 상기 (S2)의 1차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃이고, 상기 (S4)의 2차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃일 수 있다.
본 발명의 제6 구현예에 따르면, 상기 제1 구현예 내지 제5 구현예 중 어느 하나 이상의 구현예에 있어서 상기 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법은 비수세 공정에 의해 이루어지고, 리튬 불순물의 함량이 1 중량% 이하일 수 있다.
본 발명의 제7 구현예에 따르면, 상기 제1 구현예 내지 제6 구현예 중 어느 하나 이상의 구현예에 있어서 상기 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 평균 입경 크기 (D50)는 3.0 내지 8.0 μm일 수 있다.
전술한 구현예들의 고상합성방법에 따라 제조된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자는 양극의 양극 활물질로서 포함될 수 있고, 이러한 양극은 리튬 이차전지에 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 고상합성방법에 따르면, 수세 공정이 필요 없을 정도로 리튬 불순물 햠량이 저감된 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자를 비교적 간단하게 제조할 수 있다.
또한, 전술한 제조방법에 따라 형성된 고함량 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자를 양극 활물질은 양극 슬러리 제조시 겔레이션 현상 및 전지의 가스 발생 현상을 저감시킬 수 있고, 이를 양극 활물질로서 이용한 리튬 이차전지는 특히 초기용량이 개선될 수 있다.

이하, 본 발명을 상세히 설명하도록 한다. 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
이하, 본 발명에 따른 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법에 대하여 설명한다.
본 발명의 제1 구현예에 따른 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법에 따르면, 먼저, 전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되는 함량으로 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들을 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 0.95 내지 1.02 배가 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질과 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 제조한다(S1).
제1 리튬 원료물질로는, 당해 기술 분야에서 알려져 있는 다양한 리튬 원료물질이 제한 없이 사용될 수 있는데, 예를 들면, 리튬 함유 탄산염(예를 들어, 탄산리튬 등), 리튬 함유 수화물 (예를 들어 수산화리튬 수화물(LiOH·H2O) 등), 리튬 함유 수산화물(예를 들어 수산화리튬 등), 리튬 함유 질산염(예를 들어, 질산리튬(LiNO3) 등), 리튬 함유 염화물(예를 들어, 염화리튬(LiCl) 등) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 바람직하게는 상기 제1 리튬 원료 물질은 수산화리튬, 수산화리튬 수화물 및 탄산 리튬으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 사용할 수 있다.
전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되는 함량으로 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들이 제1 리튬 원료물질과 혼합된다. 즉, 니켈 원료분말과 이 외 각각의 전이금속 원료분말의 혼합물에 있어서 전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되도록 니켈 원료분말의 함량을 조절한다.
니켈 원료분말이란, 전이금속으로서 니켈을 제공하기 위하여 니켈만을 함유하는 원료분말을 의미하며, 각각의 전이금속 원료분말이란 1종의 전이금속만을 함유하는 원료분말들 각각을 의미하는 것으로서, 예를 들어 코발트와 망간을 전이금속으로서 포함시키고자 하는 경우 전이금속으로서 코발트만을 함유하는 원료분말과 전이금속으로서 망간만을 함유하는 원료분말을 의미한다.
상기 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들은 니켈 원료분말, 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 니켈 원료분말은 니켈 옥사이드, 니켈 카보네이트, 니켈 설페이트, 니켈 하이드록사이드, 니켈 포스페이트 및 니켈 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고, 상기 코발트 원료분말은 코발트 옥사이드, 코발트 카보네이트, 코발트 설페이트, 코발트 하이드록사이드 및 코발트 포스페이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고, 상기 망간 원료분말은 망간 디옥사이드, 망간 카보네이트, 망간 설페이트 및 망간 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상일 수 있다. 또한, 상기 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말은 서로 독립적으로 전체 전이금속에 대한 코발트 및 망간의 몰비율이 각각 10 몰% 이하가 되는 함량으로 혼합될 수 있다.
상기 제1 혼합물 내의 제1 리튬 원료물질과 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들의 혼합 비율은 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 0.95 내지 1.02 배가 되도록 혼합한다. 그 혼합 몰비율이 0.95 미만이면 고상합성에 따른 복합전이금속 상의 형성에 문제점이 있고, 그 혼합 몰비율이 1.02를 초과하면 잔류 리튬이 증가하고 양극 활물질의 성능이 감소하는 문제점이 있다.
한편, (S1)의 제1 혼합물은 리튬 원료물질과 전이금속 원료분말 외에 양극 활물질의 안정성 및 물성을 향상하기 위한 도핑 원료물질을 더 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 도핑 원료물질로는 W, Cu, Fe, V, Cr, Ti, Zr, Zn, Al, In, Ta, Y, In, La, Sr, Ga, Sc, Gd, Sm, Ca, Ce, Nb, Mg, B, 및 Mo로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상의 원소를 포함하는 산화물, 수산화물, 황화물, 옥시수산화물, 할로겐화물 또는 이들의 혼합물 등이 사용될 수 있다.
이어서, 산소 분위기에서 상기 제1 혼합물을 고상반응이 진행되도록 1차 소성한 후 냉각시킨다(S2).
1차 소성은 산소 분위기에서 수행된다. 여기서 산소 분위기란, 모든 기체가 실질적으로 산소로 되어 있거나 또는 1차 소성에 충분한 정도의 산소를 포함하는 분위기(예를 들어 대기 분위기)를 의미한다. 다만, 산소 분압이 대기 분위기보다 높은 조건에서 수행하는 것이 바람직하다.
1차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃일 수 있고, 더욱 바람직하게는 780 내지 870 ℃일 수 있다.
1차 소성을 수행하면 리튬 원료물질과 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들이 고상반응하면서, 스피넬 구조를 갖는 리튬 복합 전이금속 산화물과 층상 구조를 갖는 리튬 복합 전이금속 산화물의 씨드(seed)가 혼합된 가소성 혼합물이 형성되게 된다. 1차 소성 후에는 통상적으로는 방치하여 자연적으로 냉각시키나 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
그런 다음, 상기 (S2)의 결과물에 제2 리튬 원료물질을 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율 (제1 리튬 원료물질과 제2 리튬 원료물질의 총 투입 몰비율) 이 1.00 내지 1.09 배가 되도록 더 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 제조한다(S3).
이와 같이, 본 발명자들은 (S1)에 따라 1차로 소정 몰비율로 제1 리튬 원료물질을 전이금속 원료분말들과 혼합하여 1차 소성을 실시한 후, 다시 제2 리튬 원료물질을 소정 몰비율로 더 혼합하여 2차 소성을 실시함으로서 리튬 불순물이 크게 저감됨을 확인하였다.
여기서 (S2)의 결과물은 필요에 따라 분쇄 또는 분급한 후 2차 소성 단계에 투입할 수 있다. 또한, 제2 리튬 원료물질은 전술한 제1 리튬 원료물질들을 사용할 수 있다.
제2 리튬 원료물질로는 독립적으로 전술한 제1 리튬 원료물질들을 사용할 수 있다. 제2 리튬 원료물질을 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.00 미만이 되도록 혼합하면 복합 전이금속 상의 형성이 어려운 문제점이 있고, 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.09를 초과하도록 혼합하면 잔류 리튬이 증가하는 문제가 있다. 특히, 상기 제2 리튬 원료물질의 혼합량은 전체 전이금속에 대한 제2 리튬 원료물질의 리튬 몰비율이 0.01 내지 0.07 배일 수 있다.
이어서, 산소 분위기에서 상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 소성한다(S3).
2차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃일 수 있고, 더욱 바람직하게는 780 내지 870 ℃일 수 있다.
전술한 2차 소성을 수행하면, 수세 공정을 추가로 거치지 않아도 리튬 불순물의 함량이 예를 들어 1 중량% 이하로 저감된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질의 단입자를 제조할 수 있다. "단입자"란 1차 입자들이 응집된 형태의 2차 입자가 아닌, 그래인 바운더리(Grain boundary)가 없는 단결정 또는 다결정의 단일 입자로서, 적어도 80% 이상이 단일 입자들인 것을 의미한다.
단입자의 평균크기(D50)는 3.0~8 μm일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 평균 입경 크기 D50은 입자 크기 분포의 50% 기준에서의 입자 크기로 정의되며, 레이저 회절법으로 측정한 입자의 D50 값을 의미한다.
이렇게 제조된 고함량 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물로 된 양극 활물질 단입자들은 양극 집전체 상에 코팅되어 아래와 같은 방법으로 양극으로 이용될 수 있다.
예를 들어 양극 집전체는 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소 또는 알루미늄이나 스테인레스 스틸 표면에 탄소, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또, 양극 집전체는 통상적으로 3 내지 500 ㎛의 두께를 가질 수 있으며, 상기 집전체 표면 상에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 양극 활물질의 접착력을 높일 수도 있다. 예를 들어 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
양극 활물질층은 상기 양극 활물질과 함께, 도전재 및 필요에 따라 선택적으로 바인더를 포함할 수 있다. 이때 양극 활물질은 양극 활물질층 총 중량에 대하여 80 내지 99중량%, 보다 구체적으로는 85 내지 98.5중량%의 함량으로 포함될 수 있다. 상기한 함량범위로 포함될 때 우수한 용량 특성을 나타낼 수 있다.
도전재는 전극에 도전성을 부여하기 위해 사용되는 것으로서, 구성되는 전지에 있어서, 화학변화를 야기하지 않고 전자 전도성을 갖는 것이면 특별한 제한 없이 사용 가능하다. 구체적인 예로는 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 카본 블랙, 아세틸렌블랙, 케첸블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙, 탄소섬유 등의 탄소계 물질; 구리, 니켈, 알루미늄, 은 등의 금속 분말 또는 금속 섬유; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 또는 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 전도성 고분자 등을 들 수 있으며, 이들 중 1종 단독 또는 2종 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 도전재는 양극 활물질층 총 중량에 대하여 0.1 내지 15 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
바인더는 양극 활물질 입자들 간의 부착 및 양극 활물질과 집전체와의 접착력을 향상시키는 역할을 한다. 구체적인 예로는 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(PVDF), 비닐리덴플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 코폴리머(PVDF-co-HFP), 폴리비닐알코올(polyvinylalcohol), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile), 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로우즈, 재생 셀룰로우즈, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔 폴리머(EPDM), 술폰화-EPDM, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무(SBR), 불소 고무, 또는 이들의 다양한 공중합체 등을 들 수 있으며, 이들 중 1종 단독 또는 2종 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 바인더는 양극 활물질층 총 중량에 대하여 0.1 내지 15 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
양극은 상기한 양극 활물질을 이용하는 것을 제외하고는 통상의 양극 제조 방법에 따라 제조될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 상기한 양극 활물질 및 선택적으로, 바인더 및 도전재를 용매 중에 용해 또는 분산시켜 제조한 양극 활물질층 형성용 조성물을 양극집전체 상에 도포한 후, 건조 및 압연함으로써 제조할 수 있다.
또한, 다른 방법으로, 양극은 상기 양극 활물질층 형성용 조성물을 별도의 지지체 상에 캐스팅한 다음, 이 지지체로부터 박리하여 얻은 필름을 양극 집전체 상에 라미네이션함으로써 제조될 수도 있다.
전술한 방법으로 제조한 양극은 리튬 이차전지에 이용될 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 아니 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1
Li[Ni0.92Co0.04Mn0.04]O2로 표시되는 양극 활물질 단입자 제조를 목표로 하여 다음과 같이 제조하였다.
니켈-망간-코발트 전구체로서 Ni(OH)2, Co3O4 및 MnO2를 전술한 목표 조성식을 갖도록 혼합한 후, 여기에 제1 리튬 원료물질로서 수산화리튬 수화물(LiOH·H2O)을 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 1.00 배가 되도록 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 제조하였다.
상기 제1 혼합물을 스테인레스 스틸제 도가니에 투입하고 산소를 3L/min 의 속도로 투입하면서 810 ℃로 승온한 후 10시간 동안 온도를 유지하면서 1차 소성한 다음 냉각시킨 후, 입자간 네킹(necking)을 깨기 위하여 분쇄하였다.
이어서, 수득된 결과물에 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.05 배가 되도록 제2 리튬 원료물질(수산화리튬 수화물)을 더 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 제조하였다.
그런 다음, 산소를 3L/min 의 속도로 투입하면서 810 ℃로 승온한 후 5시간 동안 온도를 유지하면서 2차 소성한 다음 냉각시켜 목표한 조성식의 양극 활물질 단입자를 얻었다.
실시예 2
전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 표 1에 기재된 함량이 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질 및 제2 리튬 원료물질의 투입량을 조절한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하였다.
비교예 1 내지 비교예 3
전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 표 1에 기재된 함량이 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질 및 제2 리튬 원료물질의 투입량을 조절한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일하게 실시하였다.
전술한 실시예 및 비교예들에 따라 제조된 양극활물질 입자들의 SEM 사진을 각각 도 1 내지 5에 나타냈다.
<리튬 불순물 함량 측정>
수득된 실시예 및 비교예 각각의 양극 활물질 표면에 존재하는 리튬 불순물의 잔류량을 아래와 같이 측정하여 표 1에 나타냈다.
수득한 양극 활물질의 표면에 존재하는 Li 부산물 량을 측정하기 위해 pH 적정(titration)을 수행하였다. pH meter는 Metrohm을 이용하였으며 1 mL씩 적정하여 pH를 기록하였다. 구체적으로, 양극 활물질 표면의 리튬 부산물의 함량은 Metrohm pH 미터를 이용하여, 0.1N 농도의 HCl로 pH를 적정하여 측정하였다.
<입자의 평균 입경 크기 측정>
레이저 회절법을 이용하여 입자의 D50을 측정하였다.
<초기용량(mA/g) (충전/방전)의 측정>
실시예 및 비교예에 의해 제조된 양극 활물질과, 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드 바인더 및 카본블랙을 97.5 : 1.5 : 1.0의 중량비율로 NMP 용액에 분산시켜 슬러리를 제조한 후 이를 Al 집전체에 도포하였다. 이후 롤 프레스로 압연하여 양극을 제조하였다.
또한, 카운터 전극으로서 리튬 메탈을 사용하여 코인 하프셀을 제조하였다.
이와 같이 제조된 코인 하프셀을 상온에서 충전 종지 전압 4.25V, 방전 종지 전압 2.5V, 0.1C/0.1C 조건으로 1회 충방전을 실시한 후, 초기 용량을 측정하였다.

표 1의 결과로부터, 실시예들의 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질은 수세 전에도 리튬 불순물의 함량이 낮고 초기용량이 높게 나타났다. 한편, 비교예 1은 리튬 불순물의 함량이 낮으나 초기용량이 불량하였고, 비교예 2-3은 리튬 불순물의 함량이 높으며, 이에 따라 수세 후의 양극 활물질을 사용한 전지도 초기 용량이 충분치 않았다.

Claims (12)

  1. (S1) 전체 전이금속에 대한 니켈 몰비율이 80 몰% 이상이 되는 함량으로 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들을 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 몰비율이 0.95 내지 1.02 배가 되도록 제1 리튬 원료물질과 혼합하여 제1 혼합물을 제조하는 단계;
    (S2) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제1 혼합물을 고상반응이 진행되도록 1차 소성한 후 냉각시키는 단계;
    (S3) 상기 (S2)의 결과물에 전체 전이금속에 대한 리튬의 총 몰비율이 1.00 내지 1.09 배가 되도록 제2 리튬 원료물질을 더 혼합하여 제2 혼합물을 제조하는 단계: 및
    (S4) 산소 분위기에서 상기 제2 혼합물을 2차 소성하는 단계를 포함하는, 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제2 리튬 원료물질의 혼합량은 전체 전이금속에 대한 제2 리튬 원료물질의 리튬 몰비율이 0.01 내지 0.07 배인 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 니켈 원료분말을 포함하는 각각의 전이금속 원료분말들은 니켈 원료분말, 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  4. 제3항에 있어서,
    상기 니켈 원료분말은 니켈 옥사이드, 니켈 카보네이트, 니켈 설페이트, 니켈 하이드록사이드, 니켈 포스페이트 및 니켈 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고,
    상기 코발트 원료분말은 코발트 옥사이드, 코발트 카보네이트, 코발트 설페이트, 코발트 하이드록사이드 및 코발트 포스페이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상이고,
    상기 망간 원료분말은 망간 디옥사이드, 망간 카보네이트, 망간 설페이트 및 망간 나이트레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 적어도 하나 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  5. 제3항에 있어서,
    상기 코발트 원료분말 및 망간 원료분말은 서로 독립적으로 전체 전이금속에 대한 코발트 및 망간의 몰비율이 각각 10 몰% 이하가 되는 함량으로 혼합되는 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 리튬 원료물질 및 제2 리튬 원료물질은 서로 독립적으로 각각 수산화리튬, 수산화리튬 수화물 및 탄산리튬으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 (S2)의 1차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃이고, 상기 (S4)의 2차 소성시 온도는 760 내지 900 ℃인 것을 특징으로 하는 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법은 비수세 공정에 의해 이루어지고, 리튬 불순물의 함량이 1 중량% 이하인 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 평균 입경 크기 (D50)는 3.0 내지 8.0 μm인 것을 특징으로 하는 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자의 고상합성방법.
  10. 제1항 내지 제9항 중 어느 한 항의 고상합성방법에 따라 형성된 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자.
  11. 제10항에 따른 고함량의 니켈 함유 리튬 복합전이금속 산화물 양극 활물질 단입자를 포함하는 양극.
  12. 제11항에 따른 양극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지.
