Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for producing calcium hydroxide from limestone or a calcium compound.
Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) is a strong alkaline substance that is environmentally friendly and harmless to the human body, and is therefore widely used in various industries such as construction, iron and steel, water treatment, agriculture, and food. For example, calcium hydroxide is used to safely treat industrial waste, and since direct landfill of acidic industrial waste can cause fatal environmental disasters by contaminating the soil, calcium hydroxide is used as a neutralizing agent in the treatment process of large amounts of waste acid generated in steelmaking and metal refining processes. Recently, it has been used as a neutralizing agent in high-concentration acidic waste water containing phosphoric acid ( H3PO4 ) or hydrofluoric acid (HF) in the treatment of semiconductor process waste water.
Calcium hydroxide with low purity is used as a neutralizing agent for acid wastewater, an inorganic coagulant in water and sewage treatment, and a purifying agent in improving the water quality of lakes and rivers. Meanwhile, calcium hydroxide fine particles with a purity of 90% or higher are used to reduce air pollution and play a significant role in reducing pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SO x ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and carbon monoxide, which are environmental pollutants. High-grade calcium hydroxide with a purity of 95% or higher and good color and powder shape is used as a food additive; or for refining sugar or raw sugar.
The conventional method for manufacturing calcium hydroxide is a relatively easy process of reacting calcium oxide (CaO) and water, as shown in the following reaction formula 1. However, since calcium oxide, the raw material for manufacturing calcium hydroxide, is manufactured by heat-treating limestone (CaCO 3 ) at a high temperature of 900°C or higher, the energy cost is high. In addition, the conventional method for manufacturing calcium hydroxide is a process that emits a large amount of carbon dioxide, as shown in the following
1][Reaction Formula 1]
CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 CaO + H 2 O → Ca(OH) 2
2][Reaction Formula 2]
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 CaCO 3 → CaO + CO 2
In addition, limestone, the raw material ore of calcium hydroxide, contains impurities other than calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). Therefore, in the case of the conventional calcium hydroxide manufacturing process in which limestone is crushed and used as is without a separation process, low-purity calcium oxide containing impurities is obtained as a product. Even if water is added during the manufacturing of calcium hydroxide, the impurities generated as byproducts remain, so an additional process for removing impurities is absolutely necessary to manufacture high-quality calcium hydroxide.
Therefore, there is a need to develop an economical and environmentally friendly low-temperature manufacturing process technology for producing high-purity calcium hydroxide without going through a high-temperature heat treatment process.
