Process for the production of leather substitutes.

The production of leather substitutes is generally limited to treating finished fabrics on the surface with varnishes, with the aid of which a leather-like appearance can be achieved.

The present method is applied to finished yarns or finished fabrics made of cellulose esters and is based more on a chemical than a mechanical process in that the activity of the cellulose ester for certain chemical reagents is drawn on, whereby not only a leather-like appearance but also a fabric-like leather imitation is created.

The method according to the invention consists in that one strand or fabric webs with

   Increase leather substitute.

   Example:
5 kg of acetyl cellulose in the form of yarn or fabric are removed in a bath of 100 l of 1% tannin solution for 2 hours at 70-80 C. This is followed by a short wash with raw water and a

washed and finished on the dye bath. After drying, the goods are calendered and treated with a finishing solution as required.

In the technical application of the process it has been shown that salts and oxides of bismuth, zinc, silver and iron are suitable for a leather-like effect, namely because they are chemically bonded to the cellulose ester according to the process described be able to step.
