Process for the preparation of sulfonation products.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of sulfonation products of the esters of monohydric aliphatic or aromatic alcohols with higher unsaturated fatty acids, oxy fatty acids or aromatic acids which contain a carboxyl group in the core or in the side chain.
It has been found that such sulfonation products can be prepared in a simple manner if an excess of sulfonating agents is allowed to act on esters of the type mentioned above and the reaction products are separated from the excess sulfonating agents by washing out after the sulfonation has ended. It turns out that not only a sulfonation of the esters, but also a migration of the alkyl or aryl radical attached to the carboxyl group to the sulfo group takes place, so that the end products from mixtures of changing composition of esters in which either the sulfo group or the carboxyl group or Both groups are esterified exist.
The method as such offers u. a. the advantage of an easier way of working in that z. B. the fatty acid esters of the aliphatic alcohols (up to about the cetyl alcohol) are more easily liquid than the natural fats and also have a lower melting point. It is therefore possible to sulfonate a large number of these esters at low temperatures even without the addition of possibly interfering diluents.
Example 1: 360 kg of butyl ricinoleic acid are sulfurized with 500 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid at a temperature below 15; the reaction mixture is mixed with ice and washed with Glauber's salt solution to remove the excess sulfuric acid.
Example 2: 325 kg of ricinoleic acid ethyl ester are at temperatures below 15 with 500 kg
EMI1.1
Temperatures below 15 sulfonated with 600 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture is mixed with ice, washed out with saturated Glauber's salt solution and neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution.
Example 5: 350 kg of tranfatty acid butyl ester are sulfonated at temperatures around 0 with 600 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture is prepared as described in Example 4
EMI1.2
Example 6: 360 kg of 12-oxystearic acid n-butyl ester are sulfonated at temperatures below 150 with 500 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction mixture is mixed with ice, washed with saturated Glauber's salt solution to remove the excess sulfuric acid and finally neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution.
Example 7: 100 β-naphthoic acid n-butyl ester are sulfonated at 20 with 300 kg sulfuric acid monohydrate. Ice is added to the reaction product and, after the acidic water has been drawn off, it is washed out with saturated Glauber's salt solution.
EXAMPLE 8 100 kg of a-naphthylacetic acid i-propyl ester are sulfonated at 20 with 300 kg of sulfuric acid monohydrate. Work-up takes place as indicated in Example 7.
The compounds produced in this way are extremely strong wetting agents not only for the textile and leather industry but also for wetting metals, e.g. B. as an addition to treatment
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
liquids, such as those used in metal pickling and etching, from powders, paints, dyes, etc. Like. Suitable. In addition, the substances are strong solubilizers or emulsifiers and can therefore also be used to break down fat.
It is known to sulfonate esters of fatty acids. However, these are the naturally occurring glycerol esters of fatty acids. Compared to these, the products according to the present process have a considerably shorter wetting time in aqueous solution (sinking times of standard threads according to Krais, Leipziger Monatsschrift für Textilindustrie 1926, p. 237).
Furthermore, a method is known for sulfonating wool fat which mainly contains the esters of lower fatty acids or wool fatty acids with cholesterol and isocholesterol. The products produced in this way also differ significantly from the compounds obtained by the present process, both in terms of their chemical constitution and in terms of their behavior, since they are the sulfonated alkyl or sulfonated alkyl compounds in terms of wetting ability. Aralkyl esters of fatty acids are considerably inferior.
