Process for the preparation of hydrogen cyanide.
The present invention relates to the process for the production of hydrogen cyanide from ammonia and carbon or carbon oxide. It is known that when passing gaseous ammonia over carbon BEZW. Charcoal or kolas in a bright red glowing state hydrogen cyanide is formed. Likewise, hydrogen oyanide is formed when a mixture of ammonia and carbon oxide is added to a catalytically active substance, e.g. B. platinized asbestos, or conducts over highly heated carbon.
During these processes, however, a large part of the ammonia is destroyed, so that the processes mentioned are uneconomical and appear technically unusable.
It has now been shown that an admixture of nitrogen or other than

offers a direction other than that expressed by the following equations:

Related findings of the inventor that in the sense of equation II in addition to the hydrogen cyanide water has a strong tendency to decompose the hydrogen cyanide formed, it is important to remove this water immediately according to its formation, which is according to the equation

illustrated process can happen.
The same also applies to the carbonic acid formed at lower working temperatures. wotchc has a tendency to prevent the formation of hydrogen cyanide and to

For the purpose of practicing the present method, a gas generator, such as those commonly used to produce so-called generator gas, is filled with charcoal c and heated from the ground until the coal is in the lower part of the generator

whereby an abundant formation of hydrogen cyanide occurs.
For the success of this process, however, it is essential that the temperature of the coal at the point where the ammonia meets the coal is sufficiently high to allow the water formed according to equation II to decompose according to equation 111 and the reduction

PATENT CLAIMS: L Process for the preparation of hydrogen cyanide by passing air and ammonia over glowing charcoal, which is kept at a sufficiently high temperature to decompose the entire amount of water produced by the secondary reaction and to reduce any carbonic acid to carbon dioxide gas.
