Entfärbungskohlen, bei deren Erzeugung auf die Gewinnung der Nebenprodukte Wert gelegt wird, besitzen eine nur geringe Entfärbungskraft. Ein Verfahren, welches unter Verzichtleistung auf die Nebenprodukte die Gewinnung einer Kohle von hoher Entfärbung- kraft anstrebt, besteht darin, dass über die glühende Kohle ein Strom von überhitztem Wasserdampf oder Kohlensäure geleitet wird. Dieses Verfahren hat u. a. den Nachteil, dass die Ausbeute an Kohle eine relativ geringe ist.
Das vorliegende Verfahren weist diesen Nachteil nicht auf ; es besteht darin, dass kohlenstoffhaltige Substanzen vegetabilischer Herkunft einer trockenen Destillation unter gleichzeitiger Einwirkung von Chlor unterzogen werden. Hiebei werden die entstehenden flüssigen und gasförmigen Destillationsprodukte durch das Chlor zersetzt und eine Atmo- sphäre geschaffen, welche der gleichzeitig sich bildenden Kohle nicht schadet.
Beispiel l. Sägespäne werden der trockenen Destillation bei Hellrotglut unter gleichzeitigen Einleiten von Chlorgas unterzogen. Ist der Prozess der trockenen Destillation beendet, so wird in der Chloratmosphäre erkalten gelassen und hierauf die Kohle mit Salzsäure extrahiert.

Decolorizing carbons, the production of which is important to the recovery of the by-products, have only low decolorizing power. A process that aims to obtain a coal with high decolouring power while doing without the by-products consists in passing a stream of superheated steam or carbon dioxide over the glowing coal. This method has u. a. the disadvantage that the yield of coal is relatively low.
The present method does not have this disadvantage; it consists in the fact that carbon-containing substances of vegetable origin are subjected to dry distillation with the simultaneous action of chlorine. The resulting liquid and gaseous distillation products are decomposed by the chlorine and an atmosphere is created which does not harm the coal that is formed at the same time.
Example l. Sawdust is subjected to dry distillation in a bright red heat with simultaneous introduction of chlorine gas. When the dry distillation process is over, the mixture is left to cool in the chlorine atmosphere and the coal is then extracted with hydrochloric acid.
