Process for the production of ammonium nitrate.
The invention relates to the manufacture of ammonium nitrate.
It is known that ammonium nitrate can be produced in the form of a mist by various processes, e.g. B. by the interaction of nitric acid and ammonia gas.
Such a mist is very difficult to condense and often cannot be used at all, so that such processes often result in sensitive losses.
Experiments have shown that the problem discussed above is only ascribed to the damp condition of the mist and our invention consists in letting a dehydrating agent pass through the ammonium nitrate mist or smoke that has been produced in some way so that it is more or less dried, whereupon the ammonium nitrate can easily condense and collect for use.
To carry out the Et bond, we form the ammonium nitrate mist or smoke in any suitable manner, e.g. B. by the interaction of nitric acid and ammonia gas, and then let the resulting mist or smoke brush over or by a dehydrating agent, z. B. strong sulfuric acid, whereupon the mist or smoke dried in this way can easily condense and settle in or on the surfaces with which it is in contact, so that it can easily be collected for use.
If ammonium nitrate and sulfuric acid are allowed to react with each other in solution, ammonium sulfate and nitric acid are formed. However, we have found in practice that when ammonium nitrate mist or smoke is passed through by very strong sulfuric acid, very little, if anything, is retained by the acid and that the large mass of ammonium nitrate passes through dry but otherwise unchanged.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to a particular method for obtaining ammonium nitrate mist or smoke or to the use of any particular means for drying the mist or smoke, but that any other dehydrating medium can be used which able to dry the mist or smoke completely or partially without affecting its composition.
