Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

  Process for deboning the silk by treating it with water under pressure.

   In order to give the silk its own shine and feel, it is well known that the natural bast is removed.

   This treatment - deboning or peeling, also called decoction - is generally done in mildly alkaline soap baths. This requires very large amounts of soap, on average 30 to 35% based on the weight of the silk.

   The observation has now been made that raw silk can be deburred in a very satisfactory way without any addition of soap by treating it with water under pressure for some time, leaving traces of alkaline substances such as ammonia, soda, caustic soda, sodium phosphate. Contains borax, etc. This process has the advantage over a known process, in which no alkaline substances are used, of better deboning and enabling normal liquor ratios.

   The silk treated in this way shows the luster and feel of the silks which have been debaffed by the methods customary up to now.

   Example.
