Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Ce procédé s'applique à tcutes les réactions ca- talytiques;

   Process for increasing and activating the functioning of catalysts
Catalysts determine and accelerate chemical reactions which, under the conditions of temperature and pressure in which one is placed, could not take place without these catalysts. In hydrogenation operations, with nickel for example, molecular hydrogen, inactive at ordinary pressure, is transformed into atomic hydrogen and thereby acquires much greater chemical activity.
The method according to the invention invention is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Characterized by the introduction, during the different phases of catalytic work,

   gases or gas mixtures having the effect of increasing the quantity of active gases such as atomic hydrogen or other unsaturated gases, carbon monoxide for example, these various gases directly, entering in combination with the substances in reaction, either either by means of catalysts, so that, without increasing the pressure of the gases, an increase in the speed and efficiency of the catalytic work is obtained,
This process is applicable to all catalytic reactions;

   however, an application of this precedent to the treatment of materials, volatiles extracted from solid fuels by distillation, pyrogenation, gasification, etc., has been described below by way of nonlimiting example; the invention also extends to this special application.

   In the manufacture of liquid hydrocarbons from lignite, the mass of volatile matter, brought to a temperature higher than the dew point, that is to say the highest point of condensation of the elements of the mixing passes successively: 1 through a purifying mass, - 2 on a series of three catalysts whose object is to provoke, within this gaseous bundle, successive and complex reactions between the hydrocarbons, the water vapor, the hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, etc ,,. existing in this gaseous mass to result in a final product containing petroleum and petroleum gasoline, alcohols. ammonia, etc, ..

   Thus, in the schematic figure of the attached drawing, it can be seen that the fuel is treated in A) the total volatile matter, purified in Basent submitted in C), D), E). activates various catalysts and finally

 condensed in F) to separate liquids and non-condensable gases. The hydrogen contained in these gaseous masses on contact with nickel or any other suitable catalyst, passes from the molecular state to the atomic state and reacts as has been said on hydrogen carbides, in at the same time as the carbon monoxide reacts either with the water vapor or with the hydrocarbons to finally cause the formation of light liquid hydrocarbons and alcohols such as methanol.

   These processes have already been the subject of Belgian patents nos. 322,388, of December 15, 1924 and 322,686, of
December 16, 1924.

   But as a result of the hydrogenation as the gas mass advances, the latter becomes depleted of hydrogen and the catalysis becomes more active. In order to increase and activate the catalytic reactions, a gas mixture formed of water vapor, hydrogen and carbon monoxide originating from G), H), I) is introduced in suitable proportions. has any origin (gas in water for example).

   Carbon monoxide, by reacting with water vapor, produces atomic hydrogen, the hydrogenic action of which is added to that of molecular hydrogen introduced by pre-existing in the gaseous mass and for the latter thanks to nickel or other catalysts, the final hydrogenations are thus accelerated and increased as a result of this successive or continuous supply, compensating for the decreases in concentration, due to the work of catalysis.

   The hydrogenation thus accelerated is exerted in the example given on the hydrocarbons originating from the treated lignite and also on the nitrogen, whatever the origin, (lignite or gas mixtures introduced). Finally, we find, among liquid products
