 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

   Ceci   étant, on   va exposer comment il est pos- sible de connaître le poids de la matière à peser. On sait que les longueurs de déplacement du poids mobile sont propor- tionnelles au poids placé sur le plateau.   Or,la   longueur d'un déplacement peut être mesurée aisément et d'une façon très précise par le nombre de tours de la vis 37;il suffira de mettre un compteur de tour à chiffres en liaison avec le moteur   pour,après   un' réglage préalable,pouvoir lire sur ce compteur le poids de la marchandise;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

   L'engrenage 63 est fou sur l'arbre du moteur qui porte,claveté sur lui,un embrayage à griffes 65 qui peut être manoeuvré par la four- chette 66 qui,normalement,à cause du ressort 67,laisse le moteur embrayé sur la vis 37; lorsque l'écrou 40 arrive en fin de course,il comprime le ressort 68,ce qui a pour effet de ralentir la vitesse du moteur;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

   On admettra   qu'il   faille 250 tours du moteur 55 pour peser et,par   conséquent, /marquer   1000 grammes, au compteur   62,il   faudra que le nombre de tours du moteur * nécessaire pour poser le premier poids 83 soit de 250;500, pour le deuxième, etc...que les cames seront étudiées pour que, lorsque l'arbre 81 tourne de 1/10 de tour le premier poids se pose, 2/10 le deuxième, 9/10 le neuvième, il faut donc que lorsque le moteur fait 250 tours l'arbre   81   lasse 1/10 de tour, le rapport de réduction' est donc   1/2500  ,ce que l'on obtient précisément d'une part,avec la vis sans fin 78 et le secteur denté 79 réduisant de 1/25 et d'autre part, avec le train   épicycloi'dal   80 réduisant à   1/100;

     donc lors- que le moteur aura fait 500 tours le compteur marquera 2000 grammes,etc... et ce, jusqu'à ce que le poids devienne prépon- dérant du côté de la marchandise ( que l'on admettra d'un

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

   Mais, si pour une raison quelconque,le bâti   s'incline, le   courant se coupe (pour facili- ter cette coupure, on verse de l'huile au-dessus du   liquide   conducteur qui peut être,par exemple du mercure),et dans au- cun cas, ne peut passer dans les différents relais et circuits de la balance;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 EMI14.1
 20 X 20 1/4 de tour.

  40 40 30 X 20 = 1/2 tour.

  30 40 36 X J30¯ 3/4 de tour.

  24 40 prise directe = 1 tour.

  Pour des raisons analogues, l'arbre 123 commande par   124, fera      soit lorsque 109 ou 91 Sont un tour, soit 5/4 de tour,/10/4 de tour,   soit 15/4 de tour, en ne faisant que trois vitesses différentes pour cette deuxième boite; de   même,l'arbre   125 commande par l'arbre 126 du troisième changement de vitesse fera 20/4, 40/4, 60/4, 80/4 de tours et pour le   quatrième   changement de vitesse, l'arbre 128 féra: 100/4, 200/4, 300/4,400/4 de tours. le déplacement des fourchettes est obtenu de la façon suivante: les tenons 129 et 130 des'fourchettes 121 et 112 (figure 21) coulissent dans des rainures 131 et 132 de profil étudié,pour obtenir les déplacements voulus des deux trains balladeurs; ces raûnurs sont faites dans un pla- teau circulaire 133 entraîne par les deux pignons coniques 134 et 135;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 arbre 143.

   De même l'arbre 162 transmet son mouvement par une série de pignons à l'arbre 163 qui,à son tour,entraîne par l'intermédiaire du pignon   164, le   pignon 165 d'un deuxième train épicycloïdal sphérique; l'autre pi- gnon 166   de   ce train étant commanda par l'arbre 125 du troisième changement de vitesse; si on appelle w3 la vitesse de l'arbre  125,pour   lesmêmes raisons que   précédemment, l'ar-   bre 167 tournera à une vitesse w4 =w1+w3=w1+w2 +w3; de même cet arbre 167 entraîne le pignon 168 d'un troisième train épichycloïda;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

   Ceci étant ,on supposera que l'on embraye en appuyant comme indique   précédem-   ment sur les touches 0 Frcs 15, 0 Frcs 50 et 10 Francs. :Le nombre de tours de l'arbre 170 sera (toujours bien entendu pour 250 tours de l'arbre des poids) 200 + 10 +1   = 211:     4 4 " 4   4 bien entendu tous les arbres commandés,à cause des proprié- tés du différentiel sphérique peuvent tourner simultanément ou séparément et dans le présent   cas,le   compteur 171 fera 211/4 de tour et marquera par conséquent 10 Frcs 55 ; 250 tours de l'arbre 90 correspondent à l'unité de poids choisi, par exemple, 500 grammes et,par conséquent,l'indication du compteur représente dans ce cas, le prix unitaire de la mar- chandise;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 EMI17.1

  Or,pour 250 tours, le compteur marque: 10ff
 EMI17.2

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

Le courant arrive de la source d'électricité (figure 25) passe par les contacts d-d' qui ne sont réuni? électriquement que lorsqu'il n'y a pas de courant dans les électros 56 et 56,c'est-à-dire lorsque la balance est dans sa position d'équilibrer le compteur poids indiquant bien le poids de la marchandise pesée;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 EMI19.1

  Ceci étant bien indiqué,on   supposera/donc   la balance en équi- libre   lorsqu'on   appuie sur   178,la   tige 145' est attirée et le volant 138 revient dans sa position initiale,étant rappelé par le ressort 182 (figure 22); lorsqu'on lâche   178,le   cou- rant se coupe mais la   tige -145'   se trouve retenue grâce au verrou oscillant 183 qui est venu se loger dans l'encoche 184 pratiquée sur la tige 145' et ce,grâce au ressort 185 (figu- re 26);lorsque le volant est presque en fin de course, c'est- à-dire, lorsque le verrou 145 ne risque plus de rencontrer des encoches telles que 146,un bossage 186 de ce   volant/vient   ap- puyer sur le deuxième bras du levier du verrou 183 et libère donc la tige 145 qui revient à sa position initiale;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

   Ceci étant, dans un coffrage (figure 39) se trouvent fixés des rouleaux   190,191   qui   portent, enroulés   sur eux une bande de carton qui passe,par des moyens appropriés, l'une du rouleau 190 le long des compteurs   175',   171' et191' pour s'enrouler sur   192, c'est   la' bande contrôleuse, l'autre, la bande distributrice de tickets,se trouve enroulée sur 191, passe le long des compteurs pour sortir en 193;un composteur 191' de modèle connu permet également de marquer sur le tic- ket le mois,la date et le numéro de la pesée. le fonctionnement est le suivant:   la.   tige 194 est attirée par l'électro-aimant 180, lorsqu'on appuie sur l'interrupteur   178   comme   expliqué   précédemment (figure 25);

   l'une des extrémités de cette ti- ge de forme appropriée, telle que celle indiquée en   195, sou-   lève les leviers 196 et   196'   qui oscillent autour des axes 197 et 197' portant,chacun, quatre marteaux   198;199,200,201   et 198',199',200',201',qui   viannent   frapper les bandes de carton et,par conséquent,imprimer sur ces cartons les chif- fres/correspodants des compteurs et du composteur; l'encrage étant obtenu par-tout moyen approprié;

   la tige 194 conti- nuant sa course,l'extrémité 195 se libère des leviers 196, 196' qui se trouvent éloignés de la bande par des ressorts,      fait osciller par l'intermédiaire du doigt 202 le levier por- te-cliquet 203 qui oscille autour de l'axe 204 et,grâce au cliquet 205 et de la roue à rochets   206,entraîne   le tambour 207 qui fait avancer d'une quantité déterminée les deux ban- des de carton,dont l'une la bande contrôleuse sur 192 et l'-    autre sort de la quantité voulue en 193 ; latige 194 conti-   nuant sa cour se, le doigt 208 fait osciller le levier 209 qui commande le couteau 210, lequel coupe le ticket;

   une série

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 22>

   On supposera que l'on place sur le plateau de la balance que l'on admet en équilibre un   poids)   de 1200 grammes,à cet instant le contact 45 du bras de fléau 6 vient en liaison électrique avec le contact 52, le courant de la source électrique,54 passe dans l'électro 56 ce qui a pour effet de réunir les contacts électriques;   a-b-c.   et de couper d; par suite,le moteur électrique 55 démarre en entraînant par l'écrou 40 le poids mobile;

   lorsque l'écrou est en fin de course, le moteur ralentit par suite de la résistance du ressort 68 et le doigt 69 met en liaison les deux contacts 75 et 76 en envoyant du courant dans l'électro de débrayage 77 qui embraye la griffe sur la vis 78 de commande de l'arbre à cames (après avoir débrayé la tige   filetée' 37);   deux poids correspondant chacun à un poids de 500 grammes placés sur le plateau,sont ainsi déposé (ces poids ont une valeur inférieure à 500 grammes puisque/les bras de levier du fléau de la Rober- val sont   inégaux);

   le   moteur aura fait alors 250 X 3 = 750 toursau moment du dépôt du deuxième poids, les contacts 45 et 52 se rampent l'électro 56 ne reçoit plus de   courant,les   contacts   a,b,ç.   sont rompus, il y a freinage immédiat du mo- teur;mais la course du bras 6 continue,il y a contact entre 45' et 52' le courant passe dans l'électro 56' et pas du tout dans les électros 56 et 77; il s'ensuit d'une part,qu'il y a débrayage de l'arbre à cames, embrayage sur la vis 37 par les contacts a',b',c',le moteur est défreiné et tourne en sens inverse que précédemment,les contacts 75 et 76 se coupent (d'ailleurs il ne passaitplus aucun courant entre   eux);

 <Desc/Clms Page number 23>

   Mais malgré ce freinage immédiat,et à cause de la vitesse acquise,le mo-    'teur fait environ 5 tours de trop ; 45 revient en contact   avec   52,les   mêmes phénomènes mais en sens inverse se   repro-     duisent;la tige   37 fait 6 tours en sens   contraire,c'est-à-     dire un tour de trop ; freinage et l'arrêt ayant été plus   immédiats que précédemment, le moteur n'ayant pas eu le temps d'atteindre sa vitesse de   régime,les   contacts changent de nouveau ;

250 ;

     or,le compteur des prix 171 est établi pour marquer 0,05 pour 1/4 de tour

 <Desc/Clms Page number 24>

   Ceci étant, pour enregistrer ces différentes indications lorsque les compteurs sont à la position/d'arrêt,on appuie sur le bouton   178,en   agissant ainsi le courant passe dans l'électro enregistreur   180, puisqu'il   n'y a plus de courant dans les électros 56 et 56' et par con- séquent les contacts d et d' en liaison électrique;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 25>

 imprimeur ou perforateur 211;

   This apparatus comprises a balance of the "Roberval" or "Béranger" type with equal or unequal arms, combined with a Roman balance, the movements of the slider weight, the installation and removal of the weights being obtained by mechanical means described later. .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the balance, for example of the "Roberval" type (FIG. 2) has some peculiarities. the flail 1 comes from a foundry with bosses such as 2, for fixing the knives 3,4,5. said flail 1 comprises two arms 6 and 7; one of them 6, carries two drawn steel bars 8 and 9 joined to the foundry pieces. At 10, 11 and 12, there are weights which can move on threaded rods, to adjust the position of the center of severity of the plague.

   Each knife is made up of a triangular bar (figure 4) made of special steel and carrying four notches 13,14,15,16, which makes it possible to fix said knives on the bosses 2 using inclined head screws, 17, 18, 19, 20, These screws make it possible to place the edges of the knife parallel to each other in the same plane, and the extreme edges at a determined distance from the average edge. the knives rest on bearings 21 cut from a special steel tube (figure 5) and mortars along two inclined planes to form a V. the lateral movement of said knives is limited by threaded plugs 22, one of the ends having the shape of a cane, so that the knife rests there only by a single point.

   screwing or unscrewing the plug 22 makes it possible to adjust the lateral play of the flail. the bearings 21 are held in the frame by screws 23 and the plugs, once adjusted, are held by screws such as 24. the plate holders, with bushings for the bearings, are extended by rods which come assemble with the counter-beam by the means usually in use.

   These few peculiarities of the scale having been defined, it is therefore a question, having placed a product on the platform 25 (figure 2) of moving the slider weight on the beam arm 6 and, if necessary, of placing on plate 26, weights until the balance reaches

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   balance, the. weighing finished, return the slider weight to its initial position and lift the weights placed on the platform 26.

     -Moving the slider weight-
As has already been said, the beam arm 6 is formed from two cylindrical rods / 8 and 9; the movable slider weight comprises two spherical rollers 27 and 28 connected by spacers 29 and 30 and pivoting around axes 31 and 32. The two spacers are joined by a part 33 carrying hollow parts such as 34, allowing the tare to be carried out .

  Attached to part 33, there is a rod 35 terminated by a spherical part 36; this assembly constitutes the cursor ppids of extreme mobility, the force necessary for its drive being practically of the order of the gram. This displacement is obtained as follows: a threaded rod 37, held by two columns 38 and 39 fixed to the frame of the apparatus. Carries a nut 40 guided by a square rod 41, so that if the rod 37 by suitable means, for example using an electric motor, the nut not being able to turn around said rod 37, is driven in one direction or the other, depending on the direction of rotation of the opinion.

   Now, this nut carries two facets of crystal or other suitable material 42 and 43, fixed by screws such as 44, making it possible to approach or move them away by micrometric displacements. The distance between these facets is therefore eminently adjustable: the sphere 36 of the mobile weight is taken between these two facets, with an adjustable clearance of the order of 1/100 of a millimeter. The driving of the nut therefore results in the driving of the movable weight.

   The floating of the metallic sphere on the crystal plate gives the equilibrium position a disturbing force which, if we consider the coefficient of friction of the crystal on the steel (0.014) is of the order of 1 gr .X 0.014, that is to say of the centigram and, consequently

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 negligible with respect to other resistances and with respect to the kind of weighing that we propose to do with scales of this kind.

   It has been said that the screw being driven by an electric motor; starting, stopping and changing the directions of rotation of this notor are obtained automatically as follows: ± 'end of the flail arm 6 plunges into a container full of oil 46, fixed to the frame and is forced by two plane stops 45 and 45 ', to which a screw 48 arrives in a suitable way an electric current, Maintained by a support 47, we have with a thread at right and left-hand thread. On this screw, which can be operated by a button 49, there are two nuts 50 and 51 carrying contact stops 52 and 52 'and guided by a square rod 53.

   The operation of the button 49 makes it possible to move the contacts 52 and 52 ′ away or simultaneously closer to the stops 45,45 ′; when . the balance is in equilibrium there is no contact between these different stops. The electrical circuits are arranged according to the diagram in figure 10.

  That is to say 54, a source of electric energy'55, the electric motor, 56 and 56 'two relays; when the beam is in equilibrium, that is to say when the arm of the beam 6 is horizontal, or rather when the steel rods are horizontal, there is no contact between 45 and 52 and 45 'and 52'; as the source of electricity 54 is in direct connection with 6, no current flows through the motor and the relays.

   Assuming that a good is placed on the tray 25, the stopper 45 comes into contact with 52.1st current flowing through the electro 56 the rod is attracted. Closes contacts a and b. and the current flows through the armature and the inductor of the motor, in the direction of arrows 1; the motor therefore rotates, driving the moving weight until the moment when equilibrium is reached, 45 is no longer in contact with 52; contacts a and b are open and the motor stops and consequently the weight .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 when removing the goods, 45 'comes into contact with 53' (, the current passes through the electro 56 'which closes contacts a and b', the current passes through the armature and .. the inductor motor, in the direction of arrows 2.

   We see that this current is reversed in the armature without being in the inductors; the motor torque therefore acts in the opposite direction and the moving weight is consequently brought back to the position which corresponds to the equilibrium of the empty balance, that is to say to its initial position following the breaking of the contacts 45 and 52 '.

   It may happen, although the current is cut in the motor, that the latter makes a few more revolutions, owing to its vital force. In this case, 45 escapes from 52, but the equilibrium position being exceeded, 45 'hits 52'; as a result, the motor is not only stalled, but turns in the opposite direction; consequently, the moving weight which had exceeded its position for equilibrium, is brought back there; for the same reasons as those indicated above, there will be a series of oscillations of the flail before the final equilibrium but these oscillations will go in s 'mitigating.

   To avoid these oscillations being too numerous, that is to say to damp them more quickly, we act as follows: at one of the motor shaft ends, there is a disc brake 57 and 57 '; 57 ', in the usual position, is supported on 57 by a spring, its square rod 58 being able to slide in the support 59 and not to rotate.

   A dual coil 60 and 60 'electro pulls rod 58 when current is passed through 60 or 60' or both together. the electrical connections are made according to figure 10, or figure 11 and it is seen that when there is no current in 56 and 56 ', that is to say when the balance is in balance, the motor is braked. when the equilibrium is destroyed, current passes through 56 or 56 ', a contact takes place in ±. or this before taking place

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 in a or a 'and b or b, thanks to the springs 61, current passes through the winding 60 or in the winding 60' and the motor is therefore disengaged before it is started. when there is equilibrium, the current cuts off in 56 and 56 'and the motor is therefore immediately braked.

   In this way, the number of oscillations is considerably reduced and we can r. increase or decrease it at will either by acting on nuts 50 and 51, or by using adjustable delayed action electros the slowing down of the action of the electros being obtained either by means of an air bellows or by a liquid dash-pot.

   This being the case, we will explain how it is possible to know the weight of the material to be weighed. It is known that the lengths of movement of the movable weight are proportional to the weight placed on the platform. However, the length of a displacement can be easily and very precisely measured by the number of turns of the screw 37; it will suffice to put a digit revolution counter in connection with the motor for, after an adjustment. prior to being able to read the weight of the goods on this meter;

   this with all the desired precision which will be a function of the pitch of the screw 37, the weight of the slider, and the length of the flail arm 6. 'But, under these conditions, to keep the bar a certain precision, we could only weigh materials weighing less than a certain value, for example a kilo. In fact, for reasons of space, the flail arm 6 can hardly have a length greater than 50 c / m, the least practical will be 1 m / m.

   Assuming that 250 revolutions of the motor are needed to obtain the maximum displacement of 500 m / m and that this corresponds to a weight of 1000 grams, we see that for one gram / the displacement will be 500 = 1000 1 / 2 m / m which corresponds to half a turn of the motor, the pitch being 1 m / m; making it easy to enjoy and record -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 ment 50 centigrammes which correspond to 1/4 of a motor revolution. We can therefore see that we have, as the lower limit
1/2 gram and, as an upper limit, 1000 grams.

   If a more sensitive balance is desired, it suffices to take a movable slider of less weight such as, for example, a displacement of 500 m / m corresponds to 500 -grammes; so there would be
1 m / m for a gram, or 1/4 of a gram for 1/4 of a turn and we would therefore have, as lower limit 1/4 of a gram and as upper limit 500 grams. By continuing, thus, we see that we would increase each time by double the sensitivity and we would halve the range of the scale, up to the limit of precision of this kind of scale that we have seen to be. of the order of a centigram and even lower.

   So if we consider the general case: sensitivity = 50 centigrams, range = 1000 grams, - to increase this range, a weight will be placed on plate 26 which balances the unit chosen (1000 grams, in this case). . The range is thus doubled and by placing n similar weight the range would be n x 1000 grams. This result is obtained as follows: the motor 55 drives the screw 37 through the intermediary of the gears 63 and 64 (FIG. 13).

   The gear 63 is loose on the motor shaft which carries, keyed on it, a claw clutch 65 which can be operated by the fork 66 which, normally, because of the spring 67, leaves the motor engaged on the screw 37; when the nut 40 reaches the end of its travel, it compresses the spring 68, which has the effect of slowing down the speed of the motor;

   the finger 69 comes to press on the stop 70 of the lever 71 which oscillates around 72. On the other hand, the rod 37 carries at each of its ends a part such as 73, the lower part of which plunges into a receptacle 74 furnished The oscillation of 71 therefore brings into contact at a desired moment, at the end of the stroke, the two contacts 75 and 76, which has the effect of closing the electrical circuit

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 in one of the windings of the electro-double 77 (figures 9 12 and 13).

   45 being assumed to be in contact with 52, that is to say the case where the goods placed on the platform weighs more than that balanced by the maximum stroke of the mobile weight (in the example,! Kilo), the electro 77 therefore attracts the fork 66, disengages the screw 37 from the motor and engages the worm 78. This screw drives the toothed sector 79 which is the mother wheel of an epicyclic gear 80, which drives the ar- bre 81 carrying, keyed on it, a series of cams of appropriate profile, such as 82.

   This being the case, the additional weights such as 83 to be placed on the plate 26 and each corresponding to a weight of goods of 1 kilo. are suspended at 84 'at the end of levers such as 84 which oscillate around a common axis, 85 and rest on the cams 82 with the aid of rollers 86. The shaft 81 by rotating, therefore allows to place or raise such weights as one wishes, the cams being calculated with a view to the desired result for a determined displacement of the shaft 81. One will suppose for example, to fix the ideas which one wishes to place 9 weights; the range of the -balance will then be 10 kilos.

   It will be admitted that it takes 250 revolutions of the engine 55 to weigh and, consequently, / mark 1000 grams, at the counter 62, it will be necessary that the number of revolutions of the engine * necessary to put the first weight 83 is of 250; 500, for the second, etc ... that the cams will be designed so that, when the shaft 81 turns 1/10 of a turn the first weight is posed, 2/10 the second, 9/10 the ninth, it is therefore necessary that when the engine makes 250 revolutions the shaft 81 loses 1/10 of a turn, the reduction ratio 'is therefore 1/2500, which is precisely obtained on the one hand, with the worm 78 and the toothed sector 79 reducing by 1/25 and on the other hand, with the epicyclic gear 80 reducing to 1/100;

     therefore when the engine has made 500 revolutions the counter will mark 2000 grams, etc ... and this, until the weight becomes preponderant on the side of the goods (which we will admit from a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 weight less than 10 kilos) at this time, the beam arm 6 tilts in the other direction 45 'comes into contact with 52', the current is cut in the electro 77 (figure 10) the clutch
65 returned by the spring 67 disengages the camshaft and engages the screw 37 which drives the nut 40 in the desired direction and cuts *, -. At the same time, the contacts 75 and 76 since the finger
69 walks away.

   Assume that three weights, such as 83 have been moved by the camshaft to bring the flail arm 6 into its down position, this proves that the goods weigh less than 4 kilos, and more than 3 kilos, therefore, the equilibrium will be obtained for an intermediate position of the moving weight, we will assume that which corresponds to 200 grams, the weight of the goods is therefore 3 kilos 200. the counter must mark 3200 grams, that is to say say he must have done 250X3 + 250 X 200 = 600 turns. However, the meter first made 250 X4
1000 = 1000 revolutions in one direction, then 200 revolutions in the other direction, that is to say in all 800 revolutions which is in conformity with what one wanted.

   This being the case, when the goods whose weight we know is removed from the platform, 45 'comes into contact with 52', the nut continues its course to the right, to its extreme position where there is a device similar to that of FIG. 12 and which, by the same methods as those described, sends current in the second winding of electro 77, therefore disengages screw 37, engages camshaft 87 which , turning in the opposite direction as before, raises all the weights, and the scale returns to its equilibrium position, when empty, the engine stops.

   It is essential so that the weighings are comparable, that the empty balance, the beam always have an identical position, for example, horizontal; so that one is certain that it is always thus, one acted in the way as follows: on the frame of the machine, in two roughly rectangular positions, two tubes 88 and 88 'are fixed.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 forming a U (figure 17) and partly filled with conductive liquid; the surfaces of this liquid in each tube are in a horizontal plane; screws such as 89,89 'are set in contact with the liquid so that, under these conditions, the current of the power source 54 can fulfill its role in the operation of the balance.

   But, if for some reason the frame tilts, the current cuts off (to facilitate this cut, oil is poured over the conductive liquid which can be, for example mercury), and in in no case can pass through the various relays and circuits of the balance;

   moreover, the balance will be brought back to its correct position by means of setting screws and air bubble levels permanently fixed. the balance as we have just described it up to, presenta, therefore makes it possible to indicate the weight on a very wide scale and with a much greater precision than the corresponding balances currently in use. , For example, we will admit that a displacement of 500 m / m corresponds to this 250 grams.Un du / moving weight will correspond to 1/2 gram or by taking a displacement of 1 m / m in steps of 1 m / m 12 centigrams for 1/4 turn and as we can put 9 weights each corresponding to 250 grams, we will have a balance with a range of 2 kilos 500 with sensitivity of the order of the decigram.

   It will be assumed that a displacement of 500 m / m corresponds to 5000 grams; a displacement of 1 m / m will therefore correspond to 10 seeds. We will assume a step of 1 m / m; 2 gram! 5 therefore correspond to 1/4 'of a turn, hence maximum range 50,000 grams and sensitivity 2 grams.

   It will be assumed that this balance is hitched to lever arms such as those represented in FIG. 18 allowing a ratio of 100 or 1000; in this case, it is possible to weigh 5 tonnes, to within 200 grams, or 50 tonnes to 2 kildgrams close.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

   A description will now be given of the device enabling the indication of the total price and of the unit price to be carried out.

   We will consider the shaft 90 connected to the weight counter 62 and we will assume that this shaft makes 250 revolutions for 500 grams. the. balance can therefore weigh up to 5 kilos with 9 weights; the shaft 90 transmits its movement to the shaft 91 by means of a speed reduction system comprising: the gear 92 and the epicyclic train 93 (FIG. 19).

   If one wants, for example, that the shaft 91 only makes one revolution when 92 makes 250, the ratio of the gear 92 to the) - mother wheel of the train must be 1 and that of the train
2.5 epicycloidal of 1/100. The shaft 91 is the control shaft of the price indicator system which is enclosed in a special housing which is connected with the rest of the balance only by means of the toothed wheel 92.

   The shaft 91 drives several gearboxes: the first in the ratio of 1/1 by the gears 93 and 94, the second. in the ratio of 1/5 by the meshes. ges 95,96,97,98, the third in the ratio of 1/20 by the gears 95,96,99,100,101,102, the fourth in the ratio
 EMI13.1
 1/100 by the gears 103, 104, 105, 106, 10'i, ï08, and so on for other gearboxes, if necessary. the gearboxes (figures 19 and 21) each comprise: a shaft 109 driven by the control gears 93 and 94.

   This shaft carries two balladeurs trains, one of them with two pinions 110 and 111, driven by the fork 112 on the left or on the right, to engage: either 110 with 113, or 111 with 1.14, the pinions 113 and 114 being keyed to the intermediate shaft 115 on which is the keyed pinion 116 which meshes with 117 integral with the driven shaft 118; the other slider train carries a pinion 119 integral with a claw sleeve 120 driven

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 by the fork 121 which can engage 119 with 122, or directly the shaft 118.

   We thus obtain, for shaft 118, four different speeds and if, for example, shaft 109 makes a revolution, shaft 118 will do:
 EMI14.1
 20 X 20 1/4 turn.

  40 40 30 X 20 = 1/2 turn.

  30 40 36 X J30¯ 3/4 turn.

  24 40 direct drive = 1 turn.

  For similar reasons, the shaft 123 commanded by 124, will do either when 109 or 91 are one turn, or 5/4 turn, / 10/4 turn, or 15/4 turn, making only three speeds different for this second box; Likewise, the shaft 125 controlled by the shaft 126 of the third gear change will do 20/4, 40/4, 60/4, 80/4 revolutions and for the fourth gear change, the shaft 128 will: 100/4, 200/4, 300 / 4,400 / 4 turns. the displacement of the forks is obtained as follows: the tenons 129 and 130 des'fourchettes 121 and 112 (FIG. 21) slide in grooves 131 and 132 of studied profile, to obtain the desired displacements of the two balladeurs trains; these grooves are made in a circular plate 133 driven by the two bevel gears 134 and 135;

   the pinion 136 and the control sector 137; this is integral with a steering wheel 138 which carries keys 139, 140,141,142 and is fixed on a shaft 143. With a finger of the hand placed on one of the keys, the steering wheel and, consequently, one of the balladers trains can be driven up to 'to a corresponding position. at the moment when the finger comes to bear on the stop 144 and at this moment a lock 145 falls into its corresponding notch 146 carried by a. sector 147 in solidarity with 1'-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 shaft 143. The purpose of this lock is to immobilize the fork at a determined position corresponding to a speed.

   Each gear change is organized in the same way and carries a series of keys 148,149,150 159 (figure 23). We can therefore obtain sixteen different speeds,
This being the case, the drive shafts 118 and 123 of the first and second gear changes are connected - to the pinions 160 and 161 of a spherical epicyclic train ce (Figure 1) which makes it possible to rotate the shaft 162 at an equal speed or proportional to the sum of the two speeds of shafts 118 and 123; if we denote by CO1 and CO2, these two speeds, 162 will rotate at a speed w 'equal to K (w1 + w2) and we can always choose the ratio of the pinions such that K = 1, then w1 = w1 + w2.

   Likewise, the shaft 162 transmits its movement through a series of pinions to the shaft 163 which, in turn, drives, via the pinion 164, the pinion 165 of a second spherical epicyclic train; the other pin 166 of this train being controlled by the shaft 125 of the third gear change; if we call w3 the speed of shaft 125, for the same reasons as above, shaft 167 will rotate at a speed w4 = w1 + w3 = w1 + w2 + w3; similarly this shaft 167 drives the pinion 168 of a third epichycloidal train;

   the other pinion 169 being driven by the control shaft 128 of the fourth gear change, and the shaft 170 therefore rotates at a speed equal to or proportional to where + w2 + w3 + w4.ON could continue in the same way with a fourth differential change and a fifth gear change.

   Practically, three differentials and four gear changes are enough; the shaft 170 transmits its sum of movement to a tachometer 171 which therefore registers -. Ie quent the speed w1 w2 + w3 + w4. This being the case, we know that

 when the weight shaft makes 250 turns, shaft 118 can make 1/4, 2 / 4.3 / 4.4 / 4 turn, shaft 123 can make 5/4 10 / 4.15 / 4 turn, shaft 125 can make 20/4, 40/4, 60/4, 80/4 turn, shaft 128 can make 100/4, 200/4, 300/4, 400/4 turn .

   The connection between the shaft 170 and the counter 171 is made in such a way that when this shaft 170 makes 1/4 turn, the counter marks 0 frs Q5; on the key 139 which engages this speed, we will therefore mark 0 Frcs 05 , when 170 makes 2/4 of a turn, the counter will therefore mark 0 Frcs 10; we will therefore mark 0 Frcs 10 on the 140 key and the same reasoning will make the user register 0 Frcs 15, - 0 Frcs 20, 0 Frcs 25, etc ... etc ... according to figure 24.

   This being the case, we will assume that the clutch is engaged by pressing the 0 Frcs 15, 0 Frcs 50 and 10 Francs buttons as previously indicated. : The number of turns of the shaft 170 will be (always of course for 250 turns of the weight shaft) 200 + 10 +1 = 211: 4 4 "4 4 of course all the ordered shafts, because of the properties. tees of the spherical differential can rotate simultaneously or separately and in this case the counter 171 will make 211/4 of a turn and will therefore mark 10 Frcs 55; 250 turns of the shaft 90 correspond to the unit of weight chosen, for example , 500 grams and, consequently, the indication of the counter represents in this case, the unit price of the goods;

   if we take 1/2 kilo for unit and we can easily see that the operation of the different keys allows to obtain all the unit prices from 0 Fcrs 05 up to.

  24 Francs 95 the half-kilo and that of 5 centimes in 5 centimes So, by engaging, for example, the keys 0,05, 0,50 and 10 Frcs and by placing 500 grams on the plate, the counter marks 10 Frns 55 . OH will now suppose that instead of putting 500 grams, you put some weight on the board, for example 1 kilo 720 grams, the shaft 8.weight will do: 250 turns + 250 + 250 + 110 = 860.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 EMI17.1

  However, for 250 turns, the counter marks: 10ff
 EMI17.2
 1Ii 1 l & 0.01, for 860 revolutions, the counter marks: 36 Frs' ./&, é- r; ) (e6 * 0 which corresponds well to the price of 1 kilo 720 of merchandise # / 0.Ç $ X # 60m> & fo has 10 Frcs 55 per 1/2 kilo.

   The counter 171 therefore clearly marks the price of the goods placed on the plate when care has been taken to engage the gears or to press the keys corresponding to the unit price. This 171 counter can be organized with jumping digits; its first wheel will only bear figures from 5 centimes to 5 centimes, the passage from one number to another being made as soon as 2 centimes, 5 is exceeded; thus in the previous example, the counter will mark 36 Frs 30.

   It is necessary that the unit price appears in order to be able to check whether the required keys have been pressed, so that this price can be recorded.
 EMI17.3
 (the indication of this price to recognize the nature N.MtM) <&&. of the goods weighed), and the verification by the seller and the buyer of the correctness of the multiplication. To this end, each of the pinions such as 136 of each change of speed drives pinions 172, 173 connected to the pinions 174 of a spherical differential (figurebis) and for the same reasons as above and by the same methods, the comp - tor 175 will mark the unit price, when the desired keys are pressed, the various gears being between them in well-determined ratios.

   But, while automatically, the weight 62 and total price 171 counters return, after each weighing, automatically to zero, a means is needed for the unit price counter 175 to return to zero, also automatically, because if it was not thus and that the manipulator forgets to return the keys to their initial position, that is to say in the disengaged positions, there is a risk, at the next weighing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 to register a false price, if the goods passed did not have the same unit price and if this second manipulator forgets, before weighing his goods on the platform, to check the unit price.

   To obtain this result, we operate as follows; one of the locks such as 145 which maintains the sector 147 in a determined position, corresponded to the notch 146 'and this, thanks to the spring 176 (FIG. 22) must be released from its notch at the desired time.

   For this purpose, the latch 14.5 carries a rod 145 'which is attracted by the electro 177 (figures 25 and 26) which comes into operation when the button 178 is pressed and this, as follows:
The current arrives from the source of electricity (figure 25) passes through the contacts d-d 'which are not joined? electrically only when there is no current in the appliances 56 and 56, that is to say when the scale is in its position to balance the weight counter clearly indicating the weight of the goods weighed;

  this current then passes through the electro '180 which unites the two contacts 181 and 181', and consequently, passes the current through the electros such as 177, triggers of the locks 145 as shown in figures 25 and 26.

   As soon as the button 178 is released, the contact is broken because this switch is recalled by the spring 179; the current is cut in the appliances 177 and 180; the length 145 'no longer being retained, the latch 145 returned by the spring 176 (figure-22) risks stopping the sector 147 returned to its initial stop position by the spring 180 (due to the various notches such as 146) and this, before the end of its travel, that is to say before the end of the return movement of the handwheel 138, and, consequently, the unit price counter, risks not be reduced to zero. to overcome this drawback, we act as follows:

   we have seen that we press button 178 when the balance

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 EMI19.1
 is in its equilibrium position, that is to say when the counters are stopped, if, through inattention, one acts, before stopping the counters, the contacts d and d 'would be one open, the other closed; the current would therefore not pass through the electro 180 and, consequently, neither through the electros 177.

  This being clearly indicated, we will / therefore assume the balance in equilibrium when pressing 178, the rod 145 'is attracted and the flywheel 138 returns to its initial position, being returned by the spring 182 (FIG. 22); when you release 178, the current is cut but the rod -145 'is retained thanks to the oscillating latch 183 which is housed in the notch 184 made on the rod 145' and this, thanks to the spring 185 ( figure 26); when the flywheel is almost at the end of travel, that is to say, when the latch 145 is no longer likely to encounter notches such as 146, a boss 186 of this flywheel / comes to press on the second arm of the lever of the lock 183 and therefore releases the rod 145 which returns to its initial position;

   the unit price counter has therefore returned to zero: for the other weighings, the phenomena are renewed identical to themselves.

   To achieve the indication on both sides of the scale, the shafts of weights, unit price and total price can each drive two shafts; for example, the weight shaft 91 would drive the shafts 187 and 190 each carrying a counter and the same numbers would appear in openings 189 and 189 'placed on either side of the scale housing.

   The recording and totalization device will be described below.

   Given the three trees: tree of weights 91, tree of total prices 171 ', tree of unit prices 175', a record can be obtained by / of known methods, or as follows: counters 91 ', 171 "and 175" which are moreover, in kinematic connection with the internal counters.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 20>

 Indicators 63, 171 and 175 are arranged so that the same digits are reproduced diametrically and in different vertical planes, each wheel affecting the shape of Figure 28.

   This being the case, in a formwork (figure 39) are fixed rollers 190,191 which carry, wound on them a strip of cardboard which passes, by appropriate means, one of the roll 190 along the counters 175 ', 171' and 191 'to wind up on 192, it is the' control tape, the other, the ticket dispensing tape, is wound on 191, passes along the counters to exit in 193; a composter 191 'of known model allows also to mark the month, date and number of the weighing on the tag. the operation is as follows: the. rod 194 is attracted by the electromagnet 180, when the switch 178 is pressed as explained previously (FIG. 25);

   one end of this suitably shaped rod, such as that indicated at 195, raises the levers 196 and 196 'which oscillate about the axes 197 and 197' each carrying four hammers 198; 199,200,201 and 198 ', 199', 200 ', 201', which come to strike the cardboard strips and, consequently, to print on these cardboards the corresponding figures of the counters and of the composter; the inking being obtained by any suitable means;

   the rod 194 continuing its travel, the end 195 is released from the levers 196, 196 'which are located at a distance from the strip by the springs, causes the finger 202 to oscillate the pawl-holder lever 203 which oscillates around the axis 204 and, thanks to the pawl 205 and the ratchet wheel 206, drives the drum 207 which advances the two strips of cardboard by a determined quantity, one of which is the control strip on 192 and the other goes out the required amount in 193; the rod 194 continuing its course, the finger 208 oscillates the lever 209 which controls the knife 210, which cuts the ticket;

   a series

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

 press studs such as 211 allow each seller to affix a special mark on the receipt which is then given to the buyer for payment at the cash register. This ticket therefore bears the following information: - weight, unit price, total price, of the goods weighed, the date and number of the weighing, the rod 194 still continuing very slightly its course is electrically connected, the two contacts 181 and 181 '(Figures 29 and 25) of the recall appliances 177, unit price sectors which return to the initial position as explained previously.

   As soon as the switch 178 is released, the rod falls back by its weight and, recalled by the end 195, spring 212 and the whole assembly is ready for a new recording starts again. trz its registered position. initial Totalization is carried out as follows: in conjunction with the total price counter 171, there is a totalizing counter 213 (figure 30) which can only be driven in one direction by means of 'a pawl 214 integral with 171 and a ratchet wheel 215 integral with 213.

   The ratchet or pawl 214 has two branches (FIG. 31) it is maintained in permanent connection with the ratchet wheel 215 by the spring 214 'but can, by a device such as that indicated at 216, come to put temporary- ment the second branch 214 "in contact with a second ratchet wheel 215 'in the opposite direction to 215, which will make it possible, if desired, to drive the totalizer in the direction of return to zero of the counter 171 and this, in the If a thought needs to be canceled, the totalizing counter will return to the position it occupied before this weighing and the totalization would always remain exact.We can therefore know the situation of the cash register at any time.

   The general operation is as follows:
It will be assumed that the device is established for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

 that the useful length of the rod 37 is traversed by the nut 40 after 250 turns and that the limit position of the mobile weight corresponds to 500 grams.

   It will be assumed that one places on the weighing plate which one admits in equilibrium a weight) of 1200 grams, at this moment the contact 45 of the beam arm 6 comes in electrical connection with the contact 52, the current of the electric source 54 passes through the electro 56 which has the effect of bringing the electric contacts together; ABC. and cut d; consequently, the electric motor 55 starts by driving the movable weight through the nut 40;

   when the nut is at the end of its travel, the motor slows down as a result of the resistance of the spring 68 and the finger 69 connects the two contacts 75 and 76 by sending current to the release electro 77 which engages the claw on the camshaft control screw 78 (after having disengaged the threaded rod '37); two weights, each corresponding to a weight of 500 grams placed on the plate, are thus deposited (these weights have a value less than 500 grams since / the lever arms of the Roberval flail are unequal);

   the motor will then have made 250 X 3 = 750 revolutions at the time of the deposit of the second weight, the contacts 45 and 52 crawl the electro 56 no longer receives current, the contacts a, b, ç. are broken, there is immediate braking of the motor; but the stroke of the arm 6 continues, there is contact between 45 'and 52' the current flows through the electro 56 'and not at all in the electros 56 and 77 ; it follows on the one hand, that there is disengagement of the camshaft, engagement on the screw 37 by the contacts a ', b', c ', the engine is released and turns in the opposite direction as previously , the contacts 75 and 76 cut off (moreover, no current passed between them);

   the motor therefore returns the mobile weight in direction and for a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 23>

 certain position obtained after 150 turns in this direction the contact 45 'escapes by 52', the current is cut in the electro 56 'and consequently at the contacts a', b ', which cuts off the' current in the motor then on contact c 'which brakes it (first a', b 'before c' because of the springs).

   But despite this immediate braking, and because of the speed acquired, the engine makes about 5 revolutions too much; 45 comes into contact with 52, the same phenomena but in the opposite direction are reproduced: the rod 37 makes 6 turns in the opposite direction, that is to say one too many turns; braking and stopping having been more immediate than previously, the engine not having had time to reach its operating speed, the contacts change again;

   the rod makes a turn in the other direction, which corresponds well to the equilibrium position, which is thus obtained after two beats; the counter has turned by
3 X 250 - 150 = 600 rounds and as it is arranged to score
500 grams, for 250 turns, u will therefore mark 500 X 600 = 1200
250 grams which is what we wanted.

   We will assume that this is a commodity costing 4 Pros 55 for 500 grams and that we want to know the price to pay. To do this, before placing the goods on the tray, care was taken to press the 4 Frcs 50 centimes, 5 centimes keys (if we had placed the goods forgetting to press the keys, the price device would not mark anything, which would immediately indicate forgetting).

   We know that 91 makes a revolution when 00 makes 250 turns and that by placing the 0 Frcs 65 key, the shaft 118 makes, under these conditions, 1/4 of a turn, when the 0 Frcs 50.1 'key is placed. shaft 123 makes 10/4 turns; place the 4 Francs key - the shaft 125 makes 80/4 turns, so that the price shaft 171 'makes 80/4 + 10/4 + 1/4 = 91/4 of a turn for 250 turns of 90 ; however, we know that 90 is, in this case, 600 turns, so the price tree will be 91/4 X 600
250;

     now, the price counter 171 is set to mark 0.05 for 1/4 turn

 <Desc / Clms Page number 24>

 shaft 171 '; for one turn it will therefore mark 0 Frcs 20 and for 91/4 X 600 = 54 turns, 6, it will mark 54.6 X 0.20 * 10 Frcs +: 250 Like this counter 90. Or , the price of the goods is 1 kilo 200 X 4 Frcs 55 at its last wheel with figures X2 = 10 Frcs 92, which corresponds well to the indications of the jumpers of 5 in 5 centimes, he mar- meter. On the other hand, by pressing the three keys 0.05 which will therefore 10 Frc, s 90. 0.50 and 4 Frcs, the counter 175 is marked, 4 Frcs 55 unit price of the goods.

   This being the case, to record these various indications when the counters are in the / off position, button 178 is pressed, thus acting the current passes through the electro-recorder 180, since there is no more current. in the appliances 56 and 56 'and consequently the contacts d and d' in electrical connection;

  it is thus clearly seen that one can make the electro-recorder 180 work only when the balance is in equilibrium and not ... not in periods of oscillations, because the relay 180 is with deferred action and adjustable, it does not 'therefore acts only when the arm of the beam is stationary and in equilibrium (therefore if the button 118 was pressed before the counters stop, that is to say before the equilibrium, the recording device 11 is, on the other hand, necessary to be free to record at will and this is why, we provided, the button 178 otherwise it would have been useless, the recording is would be done automatically (if the customer finds it too expensive, if there was automaticity,

  the control tape would register a price which would not be paid at the cash register and there would be a ticket and a lost weighing). Thus, under the action of this electro, the control tape is printed, the ticket comes out ** at 193 bearing the weight, the unit price and the total price of the goods as well as the number of the weighing, the date and any other information that can be printed using a composter of known model, the seller has also made his mark on the ticket using the button

 <Desc / Clms Page number 25>

 printer or perforator 211;

   the same indications are written on the control strip, then the electros 177 of the keys act and bring them back to their initial position, the totalizer counter 213, add to the previous sum 10 Frcs 90 finally we release the button 178, when the ticket has been removed and the buttons return to their original position.
 EMI25.1
 tial, the weighing operation is thus completed.

   So in summary to do a weighing: a) - we mark the unit price using the keys b) - we place the goods on the platform. c) - button 176 is pressed (preferably when the counters are off). d) - 178 is released when you see the keys return to their equilibrium position.

   We thus obtain:
1 - a receipt for payment at the cash desk.

   - a seller's mark on this ticket for the payment of his guelte.

   2 - a control strip which will allow: - to control the cash register.

   3 - to know the total weight of each merchandise sold in a determined time (since it is self-evident by its unit price) we can thus always know, for example, at the end of the day the existing in ott store. easy control of leaks of goods.

   - we will be able to know the total price per item sold within a determined time.

   - the number of weighings makes it possible to prevent buyers from leaving without paying, the tickets generally having to be presented at the cash desk, one after another, the cashier very quickly realizes that a The ticket has not been renounced and the person can be caught or spotted immediately.

   - the console of the cai sse, which is also equal-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 26>

 mept obtained by the totalizing counter.

   Ultimately, all controls are thus obtained, except, however, that of the unit price parque by the seller. Indeed, this one can mark a unit price different from that of the goods weighed. To obviate this inconvenience, one can act in the following way;

   the sector 147 carries in each of the notches 146 contacts 217 isolated from the ground and in electrical connection by an insulated wire 218 going from this contact to the shaft 143, will pass inside this shaft which is hollow to go into the coil of the electromagnet and join one of the poles of an electric source, such as 220, the other pole is connected to the latch 146 and brings the current to the contact 222, we therefore see that when the latch 145-is in a stop position, the circuit is closed if the switch 221 is pressed, which has the effect of attracting the rod 223 of the electrode to come into effect. face of the fixed indicator light 224, the number which corresponds precisely to the key placed;

  each of the sectors is arranged in the same way, so that, if we suppose a scale placed at a certain distance from the general controller of the house, such a distance that it is impossible for this controller to be able to read the unit price marked, but sufficiently close to be able to know the type of goods weighed, this one can realize by pressing the button / 221, if the salesman has correctly marked the wanted price and this without the latter. can notice it. Several scales can be checked in this way.

   It may happen that a balance is assigned to the weighing of a single item, in which case it may be quite outside the visual range of the controller and the checking operation may however be carried out from the same way.
