<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
on fait coagir les dents desdites réglettes avec autant de balais 4 de sortie du courant, une réglette 5 et un balai 6 étant prévus pour l'entrée dudit courant, et l'on choisit de façon telle, le nombre et la réparti- tion des dents de chaque réglette 3, que pour les positions an- grlaires successives prises par l'ensemble du lecteur, au cours d'un tour complet, les courants traversant les susdites réglettes # expriment les nombres binaires correspondant à. des poids régulièrement croissant de 0 à 1000 grammes, le nombre de posi- tions successives donnant lieu à des nombres binaires diffé- rents déterminant, bien entendu, la précision du lecteur des poids;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Le :fonctionnement .d'un tel dispositif d'asser- vissement est alors le suivant ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
tact 14.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>
<Desc/Clms Page number 20>
<Desc/Clms Page number 21>
<Desc/Clms Page number 22>
<Desc/Clms Page number 23>
<Desc/Clms Page number 24>
<Desc/Clms Page number 25>
<Desc/Clms Page number 26>
<Desc/Clms Page number 27>
<Desc/Clms Page number 28>
<Desc/Clms Page number 29>
<Desc/Clms Page number 30>

<Desc/Clms Page number 31>

reading devices and a printing mechanism, suitable respectively for showing in different viewers and printing on a ticket, the weight, the unit price and the price of the weighed object expressed in the decimal system or the English system , and, finally, to a translation mechanism suitable for ensuring that the indications supplied by the sudden reading devices and the aforesaid printing mechanism, are the translation, in the usual system used, of the data and of the result of the operation carried out in the binary system by the aforesaid multiplier mechanism.
A certain number of these devices, namely binary readers and multiplier and translation mechanisms have already been described in a patent application filed in Belgium in the name of the Company "L" OUTILLAGE RBV ", March 27, 1936. , under number 323,278 and in an improvement patent application filed under the same name under number 324,966 on August 19, 1936.
Many embodiments of such devices can be provided and in particular those shown schematically in FIGS. 5 to 8 of the drawings and about which he will be amazed. in what follows, additional explanations.
In general, the aforesaid devices have the following essential characteristics.
They are preferably arranged so as to function electrically, the passage or the interruption of the current then characterizing respectively the number 0 and the number 1 in each binary order, or, conversely, the number 1 and the number 0.
A set of circuits making it possible to identify different binary orders constitutes a binary encryptor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
When each circuit of such a cipher works with an electric relay making it possible to close or open another circuit, the binary cipher is said to be "relay".
A binary reader is essentially constituted by a binary encoder and by a mobile contactor making it possible to pass or interrupt the current in the various circuits of said encoder, the successive positions of said contactor corresponding to various values of a magnitude that we want to express in the binary system. The assembly is arranged so that, for each position of said contactor, a current flows through the circuits assigned to the binary orders, the coefficient of which is equal to one in the binary number expressing the value of the aforesaid quantity for the considered position of the contactor, the other circuits then not being crossed by any current.
The multiplier mechanisms consisting essentially, on the one hand, of binary encipherers suitable for representing respectively the different factors of the product, these encipherers coacting with a set of circuits suitable for ensuring the representation of the different partial products, and, on the other hand. part, a totalizing mechanism suitable for carrying out the sum of the partial products produced, in each binary order, using the aforesaid binary encryptors.
Finally, the translation mechanisms are preferably arranged so as to make it possible to perform the comparison digit by digit, and going from the highest binary order to the lowest binary order, of two numbers fixed on ciphers that are made to coact in such a way that, as long as the representative digits of the same order are the same for the two numbers to be compared, the comparison is made on the digits representative of the order immediately below, and that, in the opposite case, the current leaves the mechanism by one conductor or another
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
depending on whether the greater number is that / inscribed on one or the other of the aforesaid numbers.
It is also possible, taking into account what has just been said, to provide numerous embodiments of a multiplying balance, and in particular to have recourse to that more particularly explained in what follows by way of example and according to which we proceed as will be indicated.
As regards first of all the binary reader of the weights, represented at L1 in fig. 5 of the drawings, it can be essentially constituted by an insulating block
2, for example sulindric, in which we drown as many metal strips 3 as it takes binary orders) to represent the weights between 0 and 1000 grams with a certain approxima-% ion, for example from 5 to 5 grams to which In this case, eight strips must be provided, each strip comprising teeth which are made flush with the surface of the aforesaid insulating block 21.
the teeth of said strips are made to coact with as many current output brushes 4, a strip 5 and a brush 6 being provided for the input of said current, and the number and distribution of the teeth of each strip 3, that for the successive angular positions taken by the whole reader, during a complete revolution, the currents passing through the aforesaid strips # express the binary numbers corresponding to. regularly increasing weights from 0 to 1000 grams, the number of successive positions giving rise to different binary numbers determining, of course, the precision of the reader of the weights;
0 test thus, for example, that one will have to envisage 200 different positions for one turn, if one wishes to obtain a reading precision of the weights of 5 g, as it was supposed in the preceding one.
The aforesaid Linaire reader could also be constituted in accordance with the provisions which were the subject of the improvement patent n ° 324 966 of the principal patent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
cipal filing n ° 323.278 filed by the company "L" OUTILLAGE R.B.V, "March 27, 1936,
According to the first of these provisions, the strips which have just been mentioned are substituted for crenellated discs which are made to act with as many contactors constituted by kinds of clamps suitable for coming into contact with the two faces of each of the teeth provided at the periphery of the aforesaid metal discs.
This arrangement makes it possible to reduce the size and the weight of the reader owing to the fact that it is not necessary to embed the disks in an insulating block.
According to the second of said arrangements, the aforesaid reader is arranged in such a way that it comprises, for the materialization of each binary order, several Onµ disc rulers which can coact with as many contactors, said rulers or disks being respectively assigned to the represen-. weighting included in different intervals, and means being provided to ensure, preferably automatically, the commissioning in the different binary orders, of the contactors and strips or discs corresponding to the interval in which is the weight to represent.
We can thus, supposing that we attribute to the reader the cylindrical shape, reduce its diameter or increase its operating speed according to whether one distributes the rulers relating to the various intervals in its zones delimited by planes perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder or by radial planes.
As regards then the locking device which must make it possible to combine the movements of the needle 1 and the rotations of the weight reader, it is preferably established in such a way, on the one hand, that at the maximum amplitude stroke of needle 1 corresponds to a complete revolution of / drive L1. and, on the other hand, that said device leaves said aid
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
gate 1 completely free when the balance is in equilibrium, so that the precision and sensitivity of said balance are not reduced by the fact that the latter must actuate the aforesaid servo device.
For this purpose and assuming that one has provided, to cause the rotations of the reader L1, an electric motor 7 provided with a starting electro 8 and a stopping electro
9, said motor acting on said drive L1 by means of a two-directional clutch 10, to constitute the aforesaid servo device, use will advantageously be made of the solution shown in the overall diagram of the fig. 5 and according to which the procedure is as follows.
A sector 12 is mounted, with gentle friction on the axis 11 of the needle 1, or on a sleeve coaxial with said axis, a sector 12 which will be described in the following as a "phantom". A sector on which two are provided two. contacts 14 and 15, against one or the other of which one end binds the needle 1 can abut depending on whether it moves in one direction or the other,
It is made so that the end of the needle 1 can direct a current towards one or the other of the contacts 14 and
15, which is why, for example, said needle is electrically connected there one of the conductors carrying current to the whole of the apparatus.
for example to the conductor mark +, the aforesaid contacts 14 and 15 being themselves electrically connected, the contact 14, against which the needle 1 abuts when it deviates in the direction of increasing weights, on the one hand to the start-up electronics 8, and, on the other hand, to a coil 16 suitable for acting with the clutch 10 to bring it into the position for which the reader L1 is driven in the direction of the increasing weight , and, the contact 15, has a coil 17 suitable for bringing the aforesaid clutch 10 into the position for which the aforesaid drive L1 is driven in the direction of decreasing weights.
The mechanism for driving the lens is made to act.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
tor L, with the sector 12, for example by means of a worm transmission 18 mounted on the shaft 19 connecting the clutch 10 to said drive, and this in such a way that said sector always tends to accompany the needle 1 in its movements.
And, finally, a brush or the like 20 is provided, capable of coacting with the stop solenoid 9 when the needle 1 has returned to 0, a retaining finger 21 being advantageously provided in addition to hold the plunger in place. to electron 8 and
9, in the running position of the engine 7 as long as the. aforesaid needle 1 has not returned to 0.
The: operation of such a locking device is then as follows;
When a body weighing less than 1 kg or one British pound is placed on the plate P of the balance, the needle 1 which was in its extreme left position starts to move to the right and the front face of its end come to meet contact 14. The current which arrives at the end of the aforesaid needle then crosses the switch-on electro
8 and the coil 16 of the clutch 10 and the motor 7 starts to rotate, driving, on the one hand, the drive L1 in the direction of increasing weight, and, on the other hand, the sector 12 in the direction in which the initial deviation of needle 1 occurred, ie to the right.
As long as the end of the latter remains pressed between the contact 14, that is to say as long as l. said needle will not have reached its equilibrium position, the phantom 12 and reader L will continue to move to the right.
When the aforesaid equilibrium position is reached the needle 1 will stop, and the coil 16 still being energized, the phantom 12 will still rotate by the angle necessary to break the contact between the end of said needle. and the con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
tact 14. From this moment the motor 7 will continue to turn because the finger 21 keeps the length of the electro 8 in the running position, but the reader Li and the phantom 12 will no longer be driven by the aforesaid coil. 16 is no longer excited.
If, as a result of oscillations of the needle 1, the posterior face of the end of said needle comes into contact with the contact 15, the coil 17 would be energized and the aforesaid phantom 12 and the aforesaid reader L1 would be driven back.
The phantom l2 and the reader L1 therefore follow all the movements of the needle 1 and they take an equilibrium position whose correspondence with the equilibrium position of said needle is determined with a preoision which is a function of the difference. between the distance between the contacts
14 and 15 and that separating the anterior and posterior faces of the end of the needle 1.
This servo device could be completed by making a brake act with the clutch 10 capable of immobilizing the shaft 19 as soon as said clutch has returned to its neutral position, said brake being released as soon as the aforesaid clutch is activated. actuated by one or other of coils 16 or 17.
It would also be possible, according to another solution represented sohematically in FIGS. 3 and 4, assign the whole reader the appearance of a plane sector, serving as a support for the strips 3, make a phantom such as a needle act directly
12 'with said reader by providing said needle with as many brushes 4 as there are strips 3, and mount this needle 12' with fairly gentle friction, on a motor shaft 22 controlled by means of a clutch. two directions of operation fenctionnant like the clutch 10, so that said needle 12 'can rotate around the shaft 22 under the thrust of the needle 1 for at least a fraction of the stroke of the latter.
The operation of this control device is then as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
As long as the needle 1 is urged towards its equilibrium position by a sufficient force, it causes the phantom 12 'to rotate faster than the clutch would do and, during the end of the stroke of said needle 1, 0 ′ is said clutch which ensures the drive of the aforesaid phantom similar to what occurs for the control device described above.
This second solution allows the phantom to quickly reach its equilibrium position while braking, at the end of its travel, the needle 1, which prevents the latter from oscillating appreciably around the aforesaid position. balance.
As regards the unit price reader now, it can be constituted in any suitable usual manner and in particular by a drum reader L2 similar to the weight reader L1. this reader L2 having to include sufficient strips to allow the representation, in the binary system, of unit prices ranging, for example, from 0 to 30 francs, from 25 to 25 centimes, said strips being grouped on three wheels or drums rl, r, r3 corresponding respectively to the inscription of cents, units and tens.
As regards then the entry mechanism to allow the operator to actuate the aforesaid unit price reader 1, 2, it can be achieved in many ways and in particular by having recourse to either a single operating member capable of occupy as many different positions as there are unit prices, either, and / preferably, to a keyboard or the like, for example of the immediate post-control type.
For this purpose, recourse will advantageously be had to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 9 to 11 and according to which the unit prices vary from quarter of a franc to quarter of a franc and are transmitted to the unit price reader L2 via a base eight auxiliary encoder.
Such an assembly has the following advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The unit price is introduced into the multiplier mechanism as the keys of the keyboard are lowered, since the latter is of the immediate type.
Said keypad being "post-checked", the keys involved in the entry of the unit price remain lowered and consequently it is possible to verify the accuracy of the unit price entered before causing the printing of the ticket.
Finally, the introduction of an auxiliary octenary encipherer makes it possible to use the English currency writer without making it undergo any modifications, as will be more explicitly indicated in what follows.
. As regards the keyboard, first of all, it is made to include three rows of keys, with vertical displacement, corresponding respectively to the inscription of centimes, francs and tens of francs, said keyboard preferably being of the type " flexible ", that is to say such that, in each column, the lowering of a key causes the return to the rest position of all the keys already lowered.
Each key carries an indicator light indicating the sum of which it insures the inscription and it is provided with a lug 2'6- which coacts, for the keys of the pennies with a toothed sector 23 of eleven teeth, for the keys of the units with. a toothed sector 24 identical to the preceding one, and, for the tens keys with two toothed sectors 26 and 26, the sector 26 directing from the preceding ones by the elimination of the first and the third tooth from the bottom.
The aforesaid lugs are arranged so that, in the row of units, each key advances the corresponding sector by as many teeth as the number of said key holds units, the keys marked 10 and 25 of. a part and
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
the keys marked 20 and 50 on the other hand being respectively identical to keys 2 and 4 and the key marked 75 being identical to key 6.
Finally, the flexibility of the keyboard is advantageously achieved, by providing along each row of keys, a bar 27 mounted on pins and serving as a support over its entire length for a kind of cam 28 suitable for acting with lugs 29 carried by the rods of each key, to lock the latter once they have been lowered, a spring 10 being provided to always tend to bring said cam into the position for which the aforesaid touched are veronillées, and, by assigning such a shape, to the cam 28, that the taste 29 of each key can.
switch during a fraction of the depressing stroke of said key, so that lowering this key has the effect of unlocking all the keys of the same row and consequently, possibly, of letting it return to its original position. rest at a previously lowered key, the aforesaid lug 19 being locked only when the aforesaid key is fully depressed.
It will therefore suffice, with such a set, to write the correct number to correct an incorrect entry,
As regards then the aforesaid auxiliary side encipherer, it is preferably set up so that it is of the circular type and on; makes him behave, given the. registration capacity of thirty francs chosen for Unit price registration, three toothed wheels 51,32,33, with eight teeth each, which are made integral in rotation respectively with the wheels or drums r1, r, r3 of reader L2 and which is ordered, wheel 31.
which will be called eighth wheel, by sector 23, wheel 32, which will be called all units ,,, by sector 24 and sector 28 ',
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
and, finally, the wheel 33, which will be called the oil wheel, through the sector 26, said wheels being provided with pawls 34.
The operation of this octenary ohiffer is then as follows:
The quarter francs are inscribed on the eighth wheel 31, by a rotation of the latter at the rate of an angular displacement of two teeth per quarter of a franc; the francs are registered in the same way on the wheel of the units 32 at the rate of a displacement of one tooth per franc, a reversible reporter G, of a usual type then rotating the wheel of the eight weeks 33, when the number of inscribed francs is at least equal to.
eight, and the tens of francs, finally, are inscribed on the wheels 32 and 33, the numbered key 10, which corresponds to the inscription of ten, causing the eight-week wheel 33 to turn by one tooth. intermediate one sector 26 and two teeth the wheel of the units 32 by the intermediary of the sector 26 'which corresponds to the inscription of 8 + 2 = 10 units, and the key, numbered 20 rotating, in the same way, the eight-tooth wheel with two teeth and those of the four-tooth units, which corresponds to the inscription of 16 + 4 = 20 units.
Drums r1, r and r3 of drive L2. rotating solilaries respectively of the aforesaid wheels 31, 32 and 33, then ensure the representation in the binary system, of the price entered in the base eight system on the aforesaid ootenary number, and in the decimal system on the keyboard.
As regards now the multiplier mechanism which must carry out the product of the binary numbers shown respectively on the reader of the weights L1 and the reader of the unit prices L2, it is essentially made to comprise, as it has already been said in the foregoing, two binary relay ciphers C1 and C2 (fig. 6) connected respectively to readers L1 and L2, and a totalizing mechanism T represents schematically on the enclosed picture drawings, ohiffreurs and totalizer
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>

corresponding readers L, or L 2 in such a way that the switch controlled by the relay in question is lowered when a current flows through said relay, that is to say when the representative figure in the order corresponding binary, of the number written on the reader, is equal to 1
As regards the connections to be provided between the aforesaid ohifi'reurs, they are established in accordance with the rules indicated below.
EMI16.4
The blades of each switch Ii are connected to the pole of a current source, and the pads for ........ P6 of a controller 1 of order 1 'are respectively connected to the blades coacting with the pad p

It follows from these connection rules that when
EMI16.6
several switches will be lowered iespeativenont in the ciphers Ci and C23 the current will come out of the switches ii set in the cipher 02, by the pads p tg connected to the switches Ik lowered in the cipher 0. Each conductor of the aforementioned output 0. will therefore characterize the. semate i + k of the rows of switches mounted in series with the above
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
conductive, that is to say that it will characterize the profit of the coefficient affecting the order i in the number represented on the encoder C1 by the coefficient affecting the order k in the number represented on the encoder C2 .
The partial products of the coefficients of the different orders of the number represented on the encryptor Ci by the coefficients of each of the orders of the member represented on the encryptor C2 are therefore collected at the output of the cipherer C2. When these partial products are equal to 1 (case where the two coefficients are equal to 1) the corresponding conductor leaving the aforesaid encipherer C is crossed by a current. When
2 that one of said coefficients is equal to 0, said conductor is not crossed by any current.
To obtain the result of the multiplication of the weight inscribed on the encipherer C1 by the unit price entered on the encipherer c2, it is necessary to add all the aforesaid partial products for each binary order. When this sum is greater than 1, it will be necessary to carry out a carryover in one or more higher orders. For example if the sum of the coefficients relating to the order 1 + k is equal to 5, we will take into account the fact that the value of the corresponding binary term is equal to i + k i + k 2 1 + k + 2 i + k
2 x 5 = 2 (2 +1) = 2 + 2 and we will manage to transfer the coefficient 1 in the order i + k + 2.
We carry out these sums in a "relay totalistor" which is constituted by a number of "addition triangle" equal to the maximum value that the sum 1 + k can take, that is to say equal to 5 for the example considered, each addition triangle serving to perform the sum of the relevant coefficients. in the aforementioned partial products, a determined binary order between 0 and 14.
.We will indicate in what follows how one proceeds to establish one of these triangles (the addition, for example that A of order 5, the other addition triangles being established according to the same rules except for this which are extreme triangles A. and Al 4 about which it will be explained
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
additionalations in what follows, and the diagram of all the aforesaid triangles, as well as the connections connecting them, being shown in FIG. 7 of the drawings.
To constitute the addition triangle A5, on the one hand, we have recourse to a series of studs lo which we have, as represented in fig. 10, following columns the whole of which constitutes a triangle, each column comprising one more stud than the column immediately to the left, and the leftmost stud being attached to the positive pole of an electric generator, and, on the other hand, to relays Z to Z7 suitable for requesting switches X0 to X7 / the first single, the other multiples, each of said switches being arranged so as to be able to connect the pads of a column, that is to say at the plot of the closest right column located on the same row,
or at the plot of said column located on the immediately upper row depending on whether or not the corresponding relay is crossed by a ceuant.
And each of the aforementioned relays Z0 to Z7 is mounted in series in a circuit supplied, either by the output conductors 412 to 417 of the cipher * C2 for which the sum i + k is equal to 5 (relay Z2 to Z7), or by an output conductor of a lower order triangle giving rise to transfer in order 5.
This is how the row 4 and 5 output pads (starting from the top of triangle A3 will result in a report in triangle A5 (relay Z1) and the row 2 and 3 output pads of a part and 6 and 7, on the other hand of triangle A4 will result in a transfer in triangle A5 (double winding relair Z0)
We can see that if we number from 1 to the pads of the right column of triangle A5 starting from the top, the one of these pads to which the current will end will indicate, by its number, the number of relays Z0 to Z7 representing the number 1, since each time a relay switches from position 0 to posieiokn
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
1, it sends the current on the same line instead of passing it on the upper line,
which shifts the point of arrival of said current by one pad down.
The aforesaid triangle A5 is then completed by connecting, on the one hand, the odd-order output pads, the rank of which in the binary system comprises the number 1 in the order of units, to the multiple winding relay of same order of a total ohiffreur C3, 8), and, on the other hand, the even or odd order pads of rank greater than 1, to the higher order addition triangle transfer relays.
In principle, therefore, the aforesaid total number should be made to include fifteen relays corresponding respectively to the triangles ao and A41, but, given that the price of the weighed object is finally expressed in fractions of 1 of a franc, it would be
It is illusory to take into account, in the price of the object placed, the ooefficients of binary orders lower than 5.
Consequently, only ten relays, R'5 to R'14, will be made to include in the ohiffer c3 the odd-order pads of the golden triangles less than 5 that do not coact directly with said digit and their order pad. 1 which does not give rise to any postponement which can be deleted.
For the same reason it would not be interesting to make the triangle Ao act on a relay of total number. As on the other hand it does not give rise to any deferral, it can be deleted.
As for triangle A14, it can be formed by a simple conductor which is connected to the output pads of triangles of lower order giving rise to a carryover of one unit in order 14.
This simplification is justified by the fact that, the price of the weighed object being less than 215, it will include at most a single unit of order 14, and its expression can only give rise to a single carry over at a time in order 14 and will not result in any postponement in order 15.
We will indicate later, on a precise example concerning the operation of the whole of the apparatus, the path

followed by the current in the various circuits of the multiplier mechanism just described, so as to facilitate understanding of the rules according to which the connections shown in Figs. 5 8 writes of the drawings.
One could also, to constitute the aforesaid multiplier mechanism, have recourse to a provision deposited in the improvement patent n ° 323,966 of August 19, 1936, provision according to which, one substitutes, for the cipherer C, an ohiffer establishing directly, in each binary order, as many derivations as there were binary order in the C2 cipher, and to the whole L2 reader and 0 ,,, a mechanical reader suitable for acting with blades or the like materializing the aforesaid derivations, to enayer a current in output conductors then each characterizing the sum 1 + h of orders i and orders h comprising the number 1 for the representation of the weight and the unit price of the weighed object,
said output conductors being themselves connected to a relay totalizer as indicated above,
As regards then the reading devices to be made to include in the apparatus, they are constituted by three sights V1, V2, V, of a usual type, in which the weight of the placed object can respectively appear. , its unit price and its overall price, the number drums acting respectively with the sights V1 and V2 being driven by the readers L1 and L2, assuming that the weight reader is driven by the motor 7, because if it is controlled directly by the mobile team of the balance, it will be necessary to provide, to control the number drums of the viewfinder Vi,
a translation mechanism of the. kind of that which will be described, concerning the drive of the drums relating to the sight V
3
As regards now said translation mechanism, it is advantageously established as follows,
<Desc / Clms Page number 21>
A binary reader L (fig. 5) suitable for representation is made to act with the number drums of the viewfinder V.
3 3 ter, for each position of said drums, the binary value of the price appearing in the aforesaid viewfinder.
The aforesaid number drums and drive L, which are preferably mounted ooaxially, are driven by the motor 7 and this by means of a two-directional tie-back 45, of which the two coils 46 are controlled. and 47 respectively by the output conductors 48 and 49 of a comparator 50 (fig. 8) on the ciphers of which the number shown on the reader L3 has been entered, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the result of the operation carried out by the multiplier mechanism, the latter encryptor then being constituted by double switches 51 controlled by the relays of the encryptor C3, R5 to R'14 and the other ohiffer being constituted by switches a. relay 52, respectively connected to each of the bars of reader L.
3
And the switches 51 and the switches 52, on the one hand, are made to coact in such a way that each time two of these switches relating to the same order are in the same position (lowered or raised) the current , which is done in the mechanism for the highest order switches, passes into the lower order switches @@ on the other hand, whether the aforesaid current leaves through conductor 48 or 49 depending on whether, for the same order, where the switch 52 or the switch 51 is lowered, the other being raised, and, on the other hand finally that the current leaves the last switch for a conductor 53 when, for each binary order, the switches 51 and 52 occupy the same position.
The connections to be established between the various relays
51 and 52 and the conductors 48 and 49, to achieve this result, 'its% represented sufficiently explicitly on the still of the drawings. so that it is useless to give their subject no
<Desc / Clms Page number 22>
additional explanation.
The operation of the aforesaid translation mechanism is then as follows.
Depending on whether the number represented on the reader L3 is lower or higher than the result of the multiplication entered on the encipherer C3, the current entering the comparator through the higher end switch will exit through the conductor 49 or the conductor 48. If we find ourselves in the first case, the coil 47 will be excited and the number drums coagulating with the viewfinder '3' as well as the reader will be dragged in the direction of increasing numbers and this until the aforesaid number is devented. substantially equal to the aforesaid result, the precision obtained being equal to one unit of the lowest binary order to which the comparison relates, which, in the example chosen. reduces the possible error to a value of less than 5 cents.
The price of the weighed object then appears, entered in a usual system, in the viewfinder V. 3
Finally, as regards the printing mechanism which is advantageously made to include in the apparatus, it can be set up in any suitable usual manner, in particular by having recourse to printing drums, corresponding respectively to the weight, to the unit price and overall price, drum whose rotations are combined with those of the number drums moving behind the sights V1, VC and V3, and provision is made, in order to trigger the printing, to be a device of manual control, or and preferably an automatic device which can be constituted, for example, by a slow electric motor 54 which is advantageously supplied via the output conductor 53 of the comparator,
so that printing occurs only when the current leaves said comparator through said conductor 53, that is to say when the translation operation is finished and the digits in the pressurized position are those corresponding to the price of the weighed object.
We are going to exhibit now, in order to show how we act
<Desc / Clms Page number 23>
feels between them the various devices and mechanisms which have just been described, the operation of the apparatus for initial data which will be chosen very simple in order to make this description clearer.
We will therefore assume in what follows, by way of example, on the one hand, that the weighed object has a weight of 640 grams, that is to say of 5 gr x 128 = 5 gr x 27 .grammes, the binary translation of this weight being characterized by the coefficient 1 in the order 7 and the coefficient o in the other orders, on the other hand, that the unit price is 2 francs, that is- Fr Fr 3 at - say of OFr 25 x 8; or 0 25 x 23, the binary translation of this unit price being characterized by the coefficient 1 in the order 3 and the coefficient o in the other orders, and, on the other hand finally , that the price indicating device is a o.
It follows from these initial conditions that, in the cipher of the weights C, only the switch 1 is lowered due to the closing, through the relay 7 and the order 7 strip of the reader Li, of a circuit 100 (in solid line) in the unit price number c2, only the switch J3 is lowered due to the closing, through the relay
V3 and the ruler of order 3 of reader L2, of a circuit 101 (in solid line). and finally, in the comparator, all 52x switches will be raised.
It will therefore close, through the ciphers C1 and 0 and the totalizer T, a circuit 102 (in broken lines)
2 which will pass through the pad P3 of the switch l7, through the pad p 'of the commutatur 3x and finally through one of the relays of the adai triangle.
3 7 3 tion A.lp owing to the fact that the product of the number 2 by the number 2 is characterized, in binary representation, by the coefficient
1 in order 10 and by the coefficient o in all other orders.
<Desc / Clms Page number 24>
One of the relays of triangle A10 being actuated, it follows that a circuit 103 '(in solid line) will close through said triangle A10 and relay R10 relating to order 10 in the comparator, the aforesaid product 23x 27 not giving rise to any carry forward to other orders.
The current entering the comparator through a conductor 104 will exit through the conductor 49, since, for order 10, the switch 51 is lowered and the switch 52 raised, the switches 51 and 52 relating to the higher orders being all / readings. The coil 47 will be energized and the clutch 45 will drive the price reading device and the reader L3 in the upward direction. As these components rotate, the switches 52 will be actuated successively, starting with the most to the left, and, as soon as the switch relating to order 10 is lowered, the current will terminate. , no longer to the driver 49 but to the driver 53.
The clutch will return to its neutral position and, with current flowing through electro 54, the print mechanism will be actuated.
It should be noted that said electro having been chosen slow, there will be no risk of a premature impression produced if the current passes for a very short time in the conductor.
53 which can happen if, during the operation of the multiplier mechanism, the unfinished product passes through the value then appearing in the price finder.
As soon as needle 1 has returned to. 0 after having removed the weighed object, it will meet the brush 20 and will cause, via the electrp 9, the stop of the motor 7.
The device will then be ready for a new weighing.
If the English system were chosen as the usual system, it would suffice to subject the aforesaid apparatus to the following few modifications.
The extreme positions of needle 1 should
<Desc / Clms Page number 25>
then correspond respectively to 0 and a pound and, the unit prices being counted in pounds shilling and fraction of 3 pence, it would be necessary to replace, in the entry keyboard, the key
20 corresponding to 20 francs by a key marked a pound (the pound worth 20 shilling) and the keys 25.50 and 75, centimes, by keys bearing the indications respectively, 3 (poncdes), ed, gel these keys carrying out the translation, in the binary system, of the fraction of the unit price less than 1 shilling, this fraction being evaluated in quarts of a shilling, that is to say, given that the shilling is worth 12 penoes, in fractions of 3 penses.
If it were necessary to enter the unit price more precisely, it could be evaluated by fraction of 1/8 of a shilling, that is to say of 1 penny half penny. To this end, it would suffice to provide, instead of the cent keys, seven keys identical to the keys marked 1 to 7 in the units column, and to replace the strips of the centime wheel r1. by strips identical to those of the r2 wheel of the units.
In addition, the relative number drums, sights Vi, V, V3 and those of the printing mechanism should be established in such a way that the weights and prices are included in the English system.
In all the foregoing it has been assumed that the weight of the object weighed does not exceed 1 kg or the English pound, otherwise we have recourse to auxiliary weights of
1 kg or 1 British pound which, preferably, is deposited automatically on a plate 110, which will be assumed in what follows to have the same lever arm as the plate P of the balance, by a mechanism which will be qualified in what follows as a trigger,
Although one can establish such a deolanoheur in any suitable usual manner, similar. mechanisms
<Desc / Clms Page number 26>
being already known for a long time, it seems preferable to establish it as will be indicated, in accordance with certain provisions of the invention which have not yet been discussed in the foregoing.
In accordance with these provisions, the aforesaid trigger is arranged in such a way, on the one hand, that it is capable of depositing on the plate 110 successively additional weights 111 of 1 kg each, two in number if the weight of the object placed must not exceed 3 kg.
the addition of said weights being carried out using a self-sealing system suitable for retaining them above the aforesaid plate 110 and a regulator suitable for controlling the successive installation, on the other hand, that it ensures, by means of an auxiliary reader 11 'registration on the reader of the weights L1, of
1 or 2 kg depending on whether one or two 1 kg weights have been placed on the platform 110, and, on the other hand, finally, whether it includes a suitable lifter to ensure the return of the auxiliary weights to their original position. nial after the price of the commodity has been calculated.
For this purpose and by what is first of all the aforesaid interlocking system, we can advantageously and for example, make it essentially comprise, as shown in fig. 12 and 13, two levers 122 articulated around an axis 123, suitable respectively to support each of the weights 111 at a height such that their base is only two or three millimeters from the plate 110 when the latter is in its high position , said levers being urged downwards by springs 134 and held in the upper position by a latch 125 whose beak rests on the heel 122 'of the aforesaid levers, and two electos 126 and 126', each preferably of the curiasse type suitable respectively for coacting with / latches 125,
that we
<Desc / Clms Page number 27>
established in endowed iron and whose movements are guided by sliding their extension 127 in a solid part 128 of the frame 129 of the apparatus, springs 130 being provided, which hold the aforesaid latches in their engaged position - ahement when no current excites the aforesaid electron
With regard to the aforesaid regulator then, in order to constitute it, one has recourse to the assumption for example that the reader L1 is constituted by a phantom needle holder brush 12 'to a contact pad 131 which is mounted in such a way, on $ sector 12 in the extension of the first strip, that it is encountered by the corresponding brush of said phantom needle 12 ',
when the latter reaches its extreme right position corresponding to a weight of 1 kg or an English pound, to. a switch, consisting for example of two flexible blades 132 and 133, which are mounted on the frame 129 in the extension of the latch 125 relating to the first auxiliary weight, said switch, which is normally open, can be closed by the part 127 during the retraction of the aforesaid latch 125, and has connections that are established in such a way that the current coming from the pad 131 arrives at a terminal 134 and is distributed between the two electro 126 and 126 ', which are mounted parallel yext, the electro 126 'being connected to the aforesaid boine 134 by means of the switch 132, 133.
As regards the aforesaid reader now, it can be established in many ways, for example by making it essentially comprise a / bres brush holder 135 articulated on an axis 136 and returned to the bus by a spring 137, this arm being able to come to occupy one or the other of two active positions depending on whether it is actuated by the heel of one or the other of the levers 122, and a sector 138 which is provided with three sliders intended, the first two for the binary representation of orders 8 and 9 of the number representing the weight of the goods, which is why they are respectively connected to relays 8 and 9 of the weight encipherer, and, the last, to the power supply brooms 139 from
<Desc / Clms Page number 28>
contactor 135, which is why it is connected to the positive pole of the current source.
Finally, as regards the aforesaid lifter, it can be constituted, for example, by two levers 140 subjected to the action of a connecting rod 141 itself controlled by the mechanism ensuring the return to zero of the weight sight. at the end of weighing, said levers being arranged so as to be able to return the levers 122 to their initial position in which they are then held by the latches 125.
The operation of such an auxiliary weight trigger is then as follows:
When the weight of the goods exceeds 1 kg. one of the brushes of the phantom needle 12 comes into contact with the pad 131 and gives the current to the terminal 134, and, to the coil 126 of the first kilo, the plunger 125 is attracted, the lever 122 released, and the first - mier additional weights 120 fall on the platform 121,
The distance of the first additional weight to the plate being of the order of 2 to 3 millimeters, the impact of the weight on the plate will not be dry enough to cause, by itself, the reposition of the contact of the brush of the needle. phantom and the aforesaid plot 131.
Two cases are then to be considered
If the weight of the goods is more than 2 kg. the first additional weight is not sufficient to trigger the movement of the needle 12 'to the left. Switch 1323,133 being closed as long as electro 126 is energized. the current passes through the leotro 1261 and ensures the setting of the second, additional weight.
As it is assumed that the weight is less than 3 kg., The needle of the balance moves to the left: it drives the phantom needle and cuts the current at 131, the electros no longer being excites the latches 125 return to their initial position.
If the weight of the goods is between 2 and 1 kg. the scale needle moves to the left as soon as
<Desc / Clms Page number 29>
that the first additional weight is placed on the auxiliary plate, that is to say at the instant t1 on. the attractive force of the electro 126 has become sufficient to set the plunge of this electro in motion . After a time t2, the contact 131 is broken, the excitation of the electro 126 begins to drop and, after a time t3, the switch 32,33 opens. The 'elecro 126' excitement begins to wane.
If this electro is slow enough so that, at the instant t3, its force of attraction has not yet become sufficient to set the plunger of this electro in motion, the second additional weight will not be de-olanohé,.
As for the kilog motor, his contactor
135 is actuated when one of the levers 122 tilts, and if the relative position of the levers 122 and of the shaft 136 and the position of the teeth of the cutters of the seceur 138 have been suitably chosen, said reader will mark 1 when the first additional weight is released, and 2 when the second additional weight is released,
At the end of the operation, the effaoeur which resets the sight of the weights on the connecting rod 141 and switches the levers 140. Those of the levers 122 which had been lowered are raised and their heel 122 ', pushing the heel. 125 'latches
125, engages on these; the levers 122 therefore return to their initial position and the levers 140 then fall back.
All the parts of the trigger are now in the initial position.
If the contactor of the weight reader, instead of being carried directly by the phantom of the balance, was established independently as shown in fig. @ the strips being mounted on a drum driven by the motor 7, one would proceed in the same way to establish the deolanoheur, the contact 131 then being able to either be mounted on the fixed sector of the balance and subjected to the action of a brush carried by the mobile crews of the said scale,

It is advantageously possible, in all cases, to complete such a multiplying balance by causing decisive totalizers to coact with the reading devices V and V.

As goes without saying and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been more especially indicated: it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants.
