Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process for the preparation of new disazo dyes intended for the dyeing of regenerated cellulosic silk.

   The present invention makes it possible to obtain new azo dyes by the combination of 8: 8'¯dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine-6: 6'-disulfonic acid or 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2 : 2'-
 EMI1.1
 dinaphthylamine-3: ô: 3'6'-tetrasulmonic with diazo compounds. Applicants have recognized that the dyes they obtain generally have the property of dyeing regenerated cellulosic bristles, such as viscose silk, in solid colors.

   Depending on the nature of the diazo compounds chosen, the combination

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 naison can be carried out in a medium acidified by a mineral acid or an organic acid, or in an alkaline medium
 EMI2.1
 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinapbtylamine-6: 6'disulfonic acid and 3s8: 3 ': 8'-tetrasulfonic acid can be combined with one or more molecules of a single diazo compound or well be combined in phases with one or more molecules of different diazo compounds.

   The invention includes the use of all diazole compounds and is not limited to any special class of such compounds. Some of the colors obtained can be diazotized on the fiber and developed in the ordinary manner, similarly some of them can be developed on the fiber with disazo compounds.

   Various examples will be given in what follows which will make it possible to fully understand the invention without, however, limiting it; the proportions which are indicated therein being given by weight.

  Example 1. 274 parts of meta-amino-benzoic acid are dinitrogenated in the usual manner with 138 parts of sodium nitrite and the resulting solution is added to a solution.
 EMI2.2
 A formulation of 505 parts of the sodium salt of 8 * 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine-8: 8'-disulfonic acid containing a sufficient quantity of sodium carbonate to maintain in the binding mixture its sunflower alkalinity. The mixture is stirred at low temperature until binding is complete, then warmed and the dyes isolated by the addition of commua salt. It dyes the viscose silk brown.

   Meta-amino-benzoic acid could be replaced by a wide variety of diazo compounds combined in alkaline solution, in the proportion of 2 molecules of diazole compound.
 EMI2.3
 that for an 8: 8'-dibydroxy-2: 2îdinapbtylamin6 6: 6'-disulfonic acid molecule; thus, for example, alpha-naphthaj3emine gives a purple tint; p ch3.oraniline gives a reddish brown and m-xy3idizào gives a violet brown.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   When the diazo component contains a nitro or acylamine group, the color formed in the combination may subsequently be reduced or hydrolyzed. The dyes thus formed can be diazotized and developed on the fiber.

  Thus, for example, two molecular proportions of para-amino-acetalilide are combined with the acid 8: 8'dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinahtylamine-6: 6'-difulfonic, then the color produced is hydrolyzed by heating with a solution of caustic soda.The mixture is then partially neutralized, salt is added, the dye is filtered off and dried. It dyes viscose silk a purple black which can be altered by diazotization on the fiber and further development. If we use beta-naphthol as a developer, we get a nice blue tint.

  Example 2.- 306 parts of aminosalicylic acid obtained by reduction of the technical mixture of nitrosalicylic acids are diazotized with 138 parts of sodium nitrite, then they are combined in the ordinary way with 286 parts of alphā naphthylamine. The resulting amino-azo compound is dinitrogenated and combined in alkaline solution with 505 parts of the sodium salt of 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine-6: 6'-disulfonic acid. When the combination is complete, this mixture is reheated and the dye separated by adding common salt thereto, filtered and dried. It gives dark bluish blacks on the viscose silk.

   If the amino-azo compound of the previous example is replaced by aminoazobenzinic monosulfonic acid, a dark brown is obtained.

  3rd example. - 638 parts of dehydrothio p-toluidine sulfonic acid are dinitrogenated with 600 parts of 36% hydrochloric acid and 138 parts of sodium nitrite and the diazo compound is poured in suspension into a solution of 621 parts of 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine-3: 6: 3 ': 6'-tetrasulfonic acid and 1000 parts of sodium carbonate in aqueous solution. Stir the mixture, which is alkaline, until!

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 until the binding is complete, the mixture is warmed and the dye isolated by adding common salt to it. This dye dyes the viscose silk brown.

   If, instead of using dehydrothio-p-toluidine sulfonic acid, aniline is used as the diazo component, a dye is obtained which dyes the viscose silk red.

   If a diazo component which contains a nitro group or an acylamin group is employed, the dyes formed during mixing can be subsequently reduced or hydrolyzed to give dyes which can be diazotized and developed on the fiber. Thus, for example, by employing p-aminoacetalinilide as the diazo component and hydrolysing the color produced in the first place, a dye is obtained which dyes the viscose silk bluish violet; this color being able to be modified by diazotization and development on the fiber.

   By developing, for example, m-toluenediamineon obtains a brown tint.
 EMI4.1
 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine-3: 8: 3 ': 6'-tetra- / sulfonic acid can be obtained by boiling 319 parts of 8-hydroxy-2-naphthylamine- 3: 6-disulfonic acid with 1250 parts sodium bisulfite liquor (specific gravity 1.345) until complete reaction. The reaction mixture is diluted with water, the product separated by the addition of common salt and filtered off. 8: 8'-dihydro- acid
 EMI4.2
 xy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine -3: 6: 3 ': 5'-tetrasulfonic is then freed from the sulfite by stirring with dilute hydrochloric acid, then filtered and dried.

The mixture is kept very hot until hydrolysis of the acetyl groups.

 is completed, after which it is allowed to cool again. The mixture is neutralized by adding hydrochloric acid thereto, the dye removed by salting and collected by filtration.

The diazo compound obtained as indicated is then added to a solution of 288 parts of beta-naphthol having a sodium carbonate content high enough to always maintain its alkalinity in the mixture. Once the binding is complete, the mixture is heated and the dye is isolated by adding common salt to it. It dyes the viscose silk in morning blue.

  Example 5 - 276 parts of meta-nitroaniline are diazotized with 500 parts of 36% hydrochloric acid and 138 parts of sodium nitrite, then the diazo compound obtained is combined with a solution composed of 621 parts of acid 8: 8'-
 EMI5.2
 2-dihydroxy: 2'-dinaphthylamine-3-6: 3 ': 6': - tetrasulphonic acid having a sufficient sodium carbonate content to keep the mixture alkalinity. When the bonding is complete, the mixture is heated and the reduction of the nitro groups is caused by adding 768 parts of crystallized sodium sulfide. When the reduction is complete, the mixture is neutralized by adding hydrochloric acid thereto. it is allowed to cool and dinitrogenated in the ordinary manner with 500 parts of 36% hydrochloric acid and 138 parts of sodium nitrite.

   The aiazo compound obtained is poured into a solution of 638 parts of 1: 8-aminonaphthol-3: 6-disulfonic acid and 800 parts of sodium carbonate in aqueous solution; the mixture is stirred and its alkalinity is retained until 'until binding is complete. The resulting dye can be isolated by the addition of common salt; he dyes the viscose silk purple.

The diazo compound produced in the ordinary manner by means of 145 parts of alpha-naphthylamine with 300 parts of 36% hydrochloric acid and 69 parts of sodium nitrite is then added to this mixture.

   The binding mixture is retained its alkalinity and stirred until the combination is complete, after which the dye is isolated by the addition of common salt.

   Example 9: 138 parts of sodium nitrite are dinitrogenated in the usual way and to the solution thus obtained is added a neutral solution of 505 parts of the sodium salt of 8: 8'-2: 2 'hydroxy acid. -dinaphthylamine -6: 6'-disulfonic acid.

   The resulting acidic mixture was stirred with Congo red paper until binding was complete, neutralized by the addition of sodium carbonate and warmed. The dye is isolated by adding common salt to it, filtered and dried. It dyes the viscose silk greenish gray.

   The shade thus obtained can be changed by developing on the fiber with the aid of suitable disazo compounds if, for example, by means of diazotized para-nitraniline, the shade becomes rich brown.

  Example 11 - 138 parts of para-nitraniline are dinitrogenated with 69 parts of sodium nitrite and combined with 505 parts of the sodium salt of lucid 8: 8'-dihydroxy-2: 2'-dinaphthylamine -6: 6 '-disulfonic, as indicated in the 9th example. When the combination is complete, the mixture is made basic by adding excess sodium carbonate. To this mixture is then added a solution of the diazo compound obtained in the ordinary manner by means of 186 parts of anile and 138 parts of sodium nitrite; the binding mixture is preserved its alkalinity and the temperature is maintained at a lower degree by the addition of ice. Stir everything until disappearance of the diazo compound. The mixture is then heated, then the dye is removed by salting, filtered and dried.

   It dyes the viscose silk a reddish brown.

   When the combination is complete, the mixture is neutralized with sodium carbonate, warmed and the dye removed by salting, filtered and dried. It dyes viscose silk brown, which shade can be altered by development on the fiber using suitable disazo compounds.

   Example 13 .-- The. dyeing of regenerated cellulosic bristles with these azo dyes is carried out by ordinary methods. Thus, for example, the dye bath may consist of 3000 parts of water, 15 of Glauber's salt, 3 parts of soap and 1 part of the dye described in the first example.

   100 parts of regenerated cellulosic silk are introduced into the hot bath, the temperature of which is raised to a degree close to the boiling point while continuing the dyeing for about three quarters of an hour. The fabric is then taken out, rinsed and

 According to a variation of the procedure, the silk can be introduced into the dye bath at a temperature close to the boiling point and allowed to cool gradually during the dyeing operation.

   Other salts or substances capable of assisting in the dyeing, such as borax or sodium carbonate, can also be added to the dye bath.
