<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ELECTRICAL REGULATOR "the present patent relates to a device intended for the automatic adjustment of the excitation current of electric machines, whether it is to maintain constant the voltage at the terminals of a generator or to make the voltage invariable. speed of an engine.
To this end, the regulator comprises a continuous current servo-motor which controls the crank of the excitation rheostat and starts to move, in one or the other direction, under the action of a pro electromotive force. - proportional to the deviation of voltage or speed to be corrected *
The adjustment was carried out without pumping oscillations, thanks to a progressive damping system, placed under the dependence of the current actuating the servo-motor, containing it no relays or other similar device, /

the regulator is simple and robust while remaining sensitive and quick in its action.
The figures show schematically by way of example the main applications of the regulator.
Fig. 1 relates to the case of maintaining the voltage of a generator *
Fig. 2 to that of maintaining the speed of a direct current motor *
Fig. 3 relates to the principles of maintaining the voltage of an alternator.
In fig. 1 the generator S excited in bypass is fitted with a field rheostat A whose crank is controlled by the servomotor ± having its armature in series aTeo that of the dynamo D. As long as the toning of the latter is equal - the at oelle Existing at the terminals of G no current crosses the servomotor S despite the closing of the key K. The excitation of 2) is established so that the magnetic circuit of this machine is very little saturated with such that, for a fixed speed, its voltage at the terminals. or substantially proportional to the excitation current * Consequently, for a determined speed of the motor M controlling D, the voltage across the latter faithfully follows all the fluctuations in the voltage across the terminals of G.
The motor M being on the contrary, very strongly saturated, its speed will be precisely proportional to the voltage of the generator.
If, for example, the voltage at the terminals of G, increases, the voltage at the terminals of D will also increase as a result of the immediate acceleration of the motor M and the servo motor S will start to move to change the setting of AT.
In order to avoid oscillations during such an adjustment, the servomotor S is provided with a braking plate 2 wedged on its axis; a slider 3? is connected on the one hand to the spring R which presses it against the plate and on the other hand to the armature of an electromagnet! , its winding being in series with the armature Gr @ ce to this

arrangement the plate is released at the initial moment each action of the servomotor and braking is gradually established as the current of S decreases, the adjustment correction being completed.
When the regulator is started, with the key K first open, M is started by means of the rheostat B then the excitation of D is adjusted in Ç, so as to bring the voltmeter V placed at the terminals to zero. of the key K which can then be closed, thus allowing the regulator to come into action.
In FIG. 3, the schematic arrangement envisaged in the ces where the generator G is replaced by an alternator L of which X is the exciter has been shown. To this end, use is made of a commutator, supplied by the alternator L, the collector of which is represented by T * The direct voltage at the collector 2 of the commutator being linked to the -cension at the terminals of the alternator. The oommutatrice will play the same role as the generator 6 of fig.l.
A variant consists in replacing the group of machines M and D by an accumulator battery having a substantially fixed terminal voltage.
It should be noted that the action of the regulator can be reinforced by making the dynamo D qompound.
If the regulator is to be used to maintain the voltage at a determined point on the line supplied by the generator G, it suffices to place in series with this line an additional inductor winding with which the dyno D is fitted and which acts in the opposite direction of the shunt inductors.
The device shown schematically in FIG. 2 is similar to the previous one. Dynamo D is mechanically coupled to the DC motor, the speed of which is to be kept constant; servo motor S controls the excitation rheostat of this motor. It can easily be seen that any fluctuations in the voltage do not in any way hinder the action of the regulator; the latter can

geme to be supplied by a source other than that serving the motor to be adjusted, for example by a battery of accumulators.
