" MASSE ARTIFICIELLE ET :METHODE POUR LA PRODUCTION DE CELLE-CI" par Monsieur Cari Gustaf Albert L U N D B E R G, à TIDAN, Suède
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"ARTIFICIAL MASS AND: METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THIS" by Monsieur Cari Gustaf Albert L U N D B E R G, in TIDAN, Sweden
The present invention relates to the production of an artificial mass distinguished by its properties of resistance to water, great strength and great resistance to wear which mass can, given its low cost price, be advantageously substituted. to other materials for the manufacture of articles of different kinds,
The invention also relates to a method for the manufacture of said process. The starting material for the artificial mass which is the subject of the present Intention consists of waste from the working of wool or cotton. or in wicks of wool or cotton, which material had not hitherto
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
found no practical use and should be rejected.
The intention is essentially that the purified starting material is heat treated with an aqueous solution of zinc salt with added acid, for example nitric acid, after which the material is impregnated with a rubber solution. . the resulting mass can then be poured into molds and be pressed therein, after which the objects thus formed can be
Tried to be vulcanized. If desired, any filling material such as wood pulp can be added.
If rubber is used as the impregnating agent, the formed articles are subjected to vulcanization with sulfur, which vulcanization process can be carried out in any convenient manner.
EXAMPLE:
Wool or cotton waste or wool and cotton wicks are treated in a container with dilute sulfuric acid for an appropriate period of time, for example 12 hours
The mixture is then subjected to centrifugation so as to free it as much as possible of the acid.
The material, which after this treatment with sulfuric acid is harder and can be better worked, is then washed with water for a suitable period, for example 6 hours and is again subjected to centrifugation so as to remove water as much as possible, after which the material is heat dried so that it is completely dry The fibrous and purified material thus obtained is then treated with a hot solution of zinc chloride, sulate zinc and nitric acid in water, for example:
78 parts by weight of zinc chloride, 14 parts by weight of zinc sulphate and 8 parts by weight of narrow acid, which solution will have been subjected to boiling beforehand for about two hours. The material can remain for about thirty minutes in this solution, which is maintained at a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
temperature of about 80 degrees centigrade, after which the material is removed and freed of any excess and is dried.
The object of this treatment is to loosen and also partially dissolve the fibrous material. After the drying process, the material is finely divided as completely as possible after which it is treated with a solution prepared as follows: waste rubbers are dissolved in a small amount of linseed oil or linseed oil. another suitable solvent * '* Ordinary asphalt from Syria, bituminous earth, rosin or other equivalent substance is heated until it is completely melted, the rubber solution then being exhausted. mixed with the melt.
The material treated in the above manner is then introduced into the melt, the latter being suitably kept in agitation at a suitable temperature. The purpose of this treatment of the fibrous material is to impregnate the material so as to make it impermeable. The mass is introduced into molds which are uniformly flattened and prepared for this purpose, to be then subjected to compression and to heat, in a hydraulic press or the like. The molded objects are then subjected to a final treatment whereby they are treated in a box or a chamber with sulfur vapors for a suitable period of time, depending on the thickness of the material in order to vulcanize the rubber which. is there.
After a suitable time the object is removed and left to dry in a heated room, after which it is ready for practical use, for example for the manufacture of articles of different species *
For certain purposes it may be preferable to mix additional substances with the material which substances may be, for example, crushed pulp of sulphated pulp.

or sultry pUJpe.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The amount of additional substances will then constitute about 50% by weight or less * The material which constitutes the object of the present invention is distinguished by its high strength and resistance to wear and has marked heat insulating properties and impermeability to water. For this reason said material can be advantageously used for certain purposes, for example for the manufacture of cogwheels and silent gears, plates or other construction elements for use in the building or for other battles etc ...
