<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Machines for washing vegetables, fruit and other foodstuffs First application filed in Germany on December 20, 1926 under number S 77 642 III / 45e.1
The invention relates to machines for washing and cleaning potatoes, vegetables, fruits and other food or fodder products, and more particularly to those of these machines which comprise a container oscillating about a horizontal axis , provided with an agitation mechanism as well as conduits for the supply and evacuation of water. In known machines of this kind, the shaft of the agitator mechanism receives its control from the upper part. It follows that in order to tilt the container, the shaft of this mechanism must first be disengaged from the control shaft.
In addition, the control, placed above the container, makes it difficult to bring the products to be treated to the container; These disadvantages are eliminated, in accordance with the pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This invention is made by passing the bottom of the container through the shaft of the agitating mechanism and taking the control below this bottom. It is even advantageous to arrange the motor of the drive on the underside of the bottom of the container.
Thanks to this construction, the receptacle is freely accessible from all sides, so that the products to be treated can be quickly and easily introduced therein and likewise be extracted therefrom with ease. It is also unnecessary to disassemble or reassemble any coupling when the motor is placed on the container.
The drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the machine,
Figure 2 a vertical section along line A-B of Figure 1,
Figure 3 a plan view, @
Figure 4 is also a plan view after removal of the agitator mechanism and the screens.
The machine comprises a frame a, provided at its upper ends with bearings b. In the latter there are journals c, which carry the oscillating container d.
On the underside of the bottom of the container is arranged a central boss e, which can be fixed, for example, by means of autogenous welding. In this boss is introduced, from above, a box f, which is put into the inability to turn. The box f receives the shaft g of the agitator mechanism, which rests by a bulge h on the upper end of this box. A gland i ensures the seal between the two components.
At its lower end, the shaft ± carries a wheel k at
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
helical toothing, engaged with a worm 1, directly coupled to the shaft m of an electric motor.
This electric motor is fixed to a plate n, united firmly, for example by autogenous welding, to the underside of the bottom of the container.
On the box! is fitted from above a carcass formed by a hub ± and radial arms p, which extend to the wall of the container d. This set carries a bottom sieve q.
The upper end of the shaft ± is not round: it has, for example, a quadrilateral section; on this part are placed the agitator paddles s, via their hub t. The latter carries at its upper part a handle for picking up and lifting the paddle agitator system. Other means can be envisioned for preventing the hub t from having a relative rotational movement with respect to the shaft g. It can also be blocked on the shaft by a spring, which opposes the fall of the hub and the pallets, when the container is tilted 1800.
A helical-toothed wheel u is placed on one of the journals c of the container ±, with which engages a worm v which can be turned using the crank w. At the bottom of the container is an orifice x provided with a drain valve y. An overflow tube z is connected to the bottom of the container. Into cetrop full is introduced, by its upper end, a sliding U-tube 2 which has, at the top of its elbow, an opening 3 preventing it from functioning as a siphon. The water level in the container d can be adjusted by pulling the U-tube more or less 2. The washing water can only flow out of the container as much as its @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
level is above the top of the U-tube 2.
The water in the tube z exerts a counter pressure on that in the container d, so that the material to be washed, for example salad leaves, cannot be applied by the pressure of the l water, against the openings of the screen and plug them, which will stop the work of the machine.
The operation is as follows. The container, in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, is loaded with products to be washed, for example potatoes. Water is then sent through a tap placed above the rim of the container and the agitating mechanism is started. The products to be treated are moved into the water by the pallets and thus freed from sand or other matter adhering to their surface.
The sand falls, passing through the openings of the screen q arriving at the riser pipe z, to be discharged with the waste water. The latter is continually replaced by fresh water. By adjusting the draft of tube 2, the flow can be adapted to the supply of fresh water.
The products remain subjected to the treatment, until they are completely free of sand and mud, which can be recognized by examining the evacuation water flowing in the tube 2. We then stop the 'fresh water inlet, the tap is opened to completely drain the water from the tank d. Using the crank w of the screw v and the wheel u, the container is tilted, from which the washed products fall.
