<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

FOR; Improvements made to transmission mechanisms with speed change for cycles.
The invention relates, on the one hand to a particular combination, on a bicycle for example, of a speed multiplier with a speed change and, on the other hand, to improvements made to these mechanisms.
The speed multiplier comprises two endless chains, one connecting the pinion of the crankset to a first intermediate pinion integral with a second intermediate pinion that the other chain connects to the pinion of the rear wheel of the cycle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The improvement relating to this device essentially consists in removably mounting the two intermediate gears on an axle brazed or welded to a flange enclosing the horizontal lower tubes of the cycle frame.
A second flange also enclosing these tubes. is joined to the first by tightening bolts, which allows the two flanges to be securely fixed to the frame as well as the axle carrying the intermediate gears. The two blocks could form a single piece. The use of these removable flanges makes it possible to easily adjust the position of the aforementioned axle with respect to the crankset and to the hub of the rear wheel of the cycle. It also makes it possible to quickly place this device on a cycle having a transmission by single string
This speed multiplier can therefore be applied to all ordinary cycles without requiring any change other than that of the single chain which is replaced by two chains.
The gear change is of the so-called "chain derailment" type. In principle, it comprises a pinion that a spring keeps in engagement with the lower end of the chain passing over the pinion of the hub of the cycle wheel. The axis on which the aforementioned first pinion is mounted, or tensioner pinion, can slide horizontally, in one direction under the effect of a lever control on which the cyclist acts and in the opposite direction under the action. of a spring.
This device is fixed on one of the tubes of the horizontal rear fork by means of a clamp tightened by bolts which allows, as for the previous device, to place it on ordinary cycles or to remove it. at will.
We could use a set of two idler sprockets, one of which would press the chain up and the other down.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By combining, on the frame of an ordinary bicycle, the two devices mentioned above, it is possible to obtain, in addition to an initial multiplication of the speed, a range of speeds which is all the more extended as the hub of the rear wheel has more sprockets of different diameters.
If, for example, the hub has two pinions at each end, two speeds are obtained by means of one of the sets of two pinions and then, after having turned the rear wheel, two other speeds different from the first two.
In the accompanying drawings, given by way of example, it has been assumed that the hub of the wheel carried two sets of two sprockets. But of course, this number could be greater.
Fig. 1 is an overview showing the devices combined and placed on the frame of an ordinary bicycle.
Figure la shows how two idler sprockets could be combined ± the chain.
Figure 2 shows the hub with four sprockets, with or without a freewheel mechanism.
Figure 3 shows the speed multiplier seen in plan.
Figure 4 is a view taken along the line A-B of Figure 3.
Figure 4a shows a form of two-branch flange.
Figure 5 and fig. 6 are, respectively, a side view and a front view of the rear chain derailment and tensioning mechanism. speed multiplier (fig. 1,3 and 4 or 4a)
The two pinions 1, 2, integral with one another, are carried by the pin 3 fixed to a part 4 fitting together like that 5, the tubes of the frame.
Instead of the two parts 4 and 5, one could use a single part with two branches 4a and 5a.
Bolts 6 make it possible to tighten parts 4,5 (or 4a, 5a) strongly and to immobilize the assembly in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
desired position. By a chain 7, the pinion 1 is connected to the pinion 8 of the crankset. By means of a chain 9,1e pinion 2 is connected to the rear wheel of the cycle.
Speed change (figs, 1,2,5 and 6).
Sprockets 10,11,12 (or a greater number) are mounted on the hub of the rear wheel of the cycle. Chain 9 passes over one of them. It is tensioned automatically by a pin 14 mounted on a pin 15 sliding in a support 16 itself sliding on a rod 17 fixed to a bulge of a collar 18 which bolts 19 allow to fix on the frame. dre 20.
A spring 21 tends to move the pinion 14 away from the support 16. Another spring 22 tends to push, downwards, the assembly 16,15,21, and the pinion 14 which bears on the lower strand of the chain 9. Any rotation of the part 16 on the rod 17 is avoided by means of a pin 23 passing through a slot 24 of the rod 17.
On the axis 15 is fixed a bracket 25 on which can act a lever 26 articulated at 27 on a lug 28 of the collar 18. By means of a cable 29 attached at 30 to the lever, the cyclis' you can oscillate lever 26 in the direction indicated by the arrows in fig. 5 and bring., Compressing the spring 21, the pinion in the plane b corresponding to the plane of the pinion 10 of the rear wheel.
This displacement of the pinion 14 has the effect of derailing the chain 9, which from the pinion 11 (plane a) passes over that 10.
The slack that chain 9 takes on passing from one pinion to another of smaller diameter is automatically taken up by the action of spring 22
When the cyclist, wishing to change the speed, acts on the lever (not shown) attached to the cable 29. To release the latter. The spring 21 brings the pinion 14 back into the plane! .. The chain 9 leaves the pinion 10 and pass on that 11-
The same operations can be carried out with respect to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
to gears 12 and 13 when the wheel has been turned over.
It is therefore possible to obtain four speeds, but this. number could be further increased by replacing the intermediate pinion 1 (or that 2) by another of a greater or lesser diameter.
The device shown in Figures 5 and 6 could be arranged so that the pinion 14 tightens the chain 9, pressing it upwards. For this, it would suffice to make the parts 16 and 17 integral with each other, to extend this last through the thickening 18a of the flange 18 and to place the spring 22 above 18a so that it is supported, on the one hand on 18a and, on the other hand, on a head of the rod 17 which could slide in 18a.
Finally, as shown in the figure 1a, two tensioning sprockets could be combined, one, 14 pushing the chain downwards and the other 14a, pushing it upwards. The levers 26 and 26a joined by a bar 29a would be actuated. by the single cable 29.
It would also be possible to act only on one of the levers 26, for example, the pinion 14a being able to move freely on its axis which could be made non-sliding.
The combined devices which have just been described can therefore, thanks to their mounting by flange, collar and bolts, be adapted to ordinary cycles and be easily removed therefrom @
The construction details of these arrangements may. ent vary without changing anything in their operation.
A light metal, such as aluminum, can be used to establish certain parts, especially the clamps.
