<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 2 est une vue analogue à fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

'FRACTIONATIONS WITH PNEUMATIC TOOLS' '.
This invention has. relates to pneumatic tools but more particularly to pneumatic tools of. percussion type in which the foil or equivalent tool penetrates the front end of the. cylinder and. in its working position, limits the movement of the hammer piston forwards,
One of the aims of the invention is to prevent the piston-mar.teau. to strike the front end of the cylinder each time. than :
the., foil or equivalent organ is able to deviate from its. normal working position in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
due to the fact that the manual press.ian necessary to keep said foil within reach of the impact of the piston-hammer ceases to be exerted.
Other objects of the invention will be made apparent or explained in the course of the description given below with reference to the accompanying drawing which represents a practical application of this invention and in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a pneumatic tool established according to the invention.,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 showing the foil or tool proper removed from its normal working position, which allows the hammer piston to advance beyond its previous limit position and to cover the front intake port of the cylinder.
In these figures, A designates the cylinder of a pneumatic tool having free exhaust ports; II which are controlled by a piston C sliding in a piston chamber A 'of said cylinder, The front end of the cylinder A. has a cylindrical hole D in which is placed a bush E. This bush is used to guide a tool proper such as a foil or felling pick F whose shank G normally penetrates into the front end of the piston chamber with a sufficient distance to receive the impacts of the hammer piston C.
The device which serves to limit the distance at which the rod G can penetrate into the piston chamber A 'comprises a collar H carried by the foil F and the diameter of which is preferably a little larger than that of the sleeve E so that it can butt against the front end of cylinder A.
The collar H also serves to prevent the complete ejection of the foil F out of the cylinder A. For this purpose, the collar H can come into contact with an end wall 1: of a cap K screwed onto the front end of cylinder A @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
this cap had in its front end a cylindrical hole L which allows foil 3 to slide through it.
The distribution of pressurized fluid to. ends. of the piston chamber can be effected in any suitable and well-known manner. The device shown. this effect comprises a distribution mechanism composed of an oscillating valve O pivoting about an axis mounted in a valve seat Q provided at the rear end of cylinder A. Seat Q is maintained. in. its working position by a rear cover R fitted with a flange S screwed onto the rear end of cylinder A.
A valve chamber T arranged in. the rear cover R. and @ containing the valve -0 communicated conatemment with a suitable source of pressurized fluid (not shown) by a conduit U whose inner end opens into an annular chamber V located above the valve O.
On one side of the. valve chamber T at the front end of the piston chamber extends an inlet duct W from which la. The intake port X is preferably spaced a sufficiently large distance from the front end of the piston chamber A '. The admission of pressurized fluid to the rear end of cylinder A is effected through an intake duct Y of valve Q.
To prevent a high compression from occurring in the front end of the piston chamber A ', this chamber is provided with a decompression duct which opens into the piston chamber at a suitable point between exhaust ports B and the front end of the piston chamber and leads directly to the atmosphere.
According to the present invention, the piston has an annular groove 1 ::. whose position on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
piston a- is such that when this piston is located at the front end of the chamber. A ', this groove b is located in front of the intake port X. However, the piston can only occupy this position when the foil is set to. even to come out of range of action of the impact of the piston-hammer, since, during normal perforation, the rod of this foil penetrates into the piston chamber by a sufficient distance to prevent complete covering of the piston. the intake port X by the piston.
The role of the annular groove b is to intercept the pressurized fluid which otherwise could infiltrate along the piston, entering the front end of the piston chamber when the piston is in its limit position at the front end of this chamber and move the piston rearward to uncover the intake port X. Pressurized fluid entering the front end of the piston chamber would then drive the piston backward. rear, so that the valve 0. admits pressurized fluid behind the track and pushes the latter abruptly against the front end of the cylinder.
The pressurized fluid thus intercepted by the groove b can find an exhaust path passing through a longitudinal groove a formed in the piston chamber. The length of the groove is such that when the piston 0 occupies its front limit position, the rear end of the groove is exposed by the corresponding end of the piston and the pressurized fluid can pass through this groove into the part of the chamber piston located behind the piston and escape through the decompression line Z and the exhaust ports B.
It will be noted that the annular groove b and the longitudinal groove c occupy such positions, and have. proportions such that it is impossible that
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the pressurized fluid arriving through the inlet port escapes the atmosphere through these grooves, since, while the. annular groove: b coincides with la. intake port X, the rear end of the ± longitudinal groove is still covered by the rear end of the piston (1 in both the forward stroke of the piston and the forward stroke of said piston. back-.
The front end of the piston 0 is provided with a narrowed extension, d which abuts against the rod 1 of the foil F and whose diameter is preferably a little smaller than that of the hole e of the sleeve E. In this way , there will be sufficient clearance between the extension d and the hole e to allow the compressed fluid / to escape from the front end of the chamber A 'to the atmosphere through the ± conduits. socket E and the front end of cylinder A.
During normal operation of the apparatus, foil 3 will of course enter. the piston chamber A 'to the maximum extent permitted by the collar H and, as previously explained, the foil will prevent. the piston ±. to pass the X intake port.
However, if, through carelessness, the operator ceases to exert the manual pressure necessary to maintain the foil properly applied to the material to be perforated, the piston will be forced back to the front end of the piston chamber A '. In this case, the supply lumen X would be covered by the piston and the pressurized fluid inlet at the front end of the chamber. piston would be prevented.
During the time that the piston occupies its front limit position, the pressurized fluid will of course leak from one side of the piston to the other in opposite directions., And
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the one which passes the rear along the piston will escape. the atmosphere through the exhaust ports B. The pressurized fluid escaping towards the front will be intercepted by the groove b of the piston and will be brought by this groove to the longitudinal groove c.
The pressurized fluid will then pass from the groove. ± .. into the part of the piston chamber located at the rear of the piston and then escape to. atmosphere through the exhaust lights B.
Whenever the tool F is able to move away from its normal working position in the cylinder, the movement of the piston will be quickly stopped and the piston will be immobilized, until the moment when it has to stop. again been moved rearward by the foil to the point of uncovering the X admission light.
