<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"ARRANGEMENT FOR FILLING BAGS"
The invention relates to a device for filling valve bags and more particularly for filling in the case of pulverulent or granular materials.
To fill the valve bags, it is convenient. It is common practice to push the material back into the bag through a chute by means of a rotary propellant, the filler neck extending the casing 4u propellant. Devices of this kind have been satisfactory for certain materials, such as cement, but they become stuffed and do not work satisfactorily in the case of certain other substances such as flour, for example. The present invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
aims to improve the filling devices, .de this type so as to allow them to pass flour or the like without stuffing.
In some respect, the invention comprises the combination of a housing with a propellant placed in the bottom thereof to propel material laterally out of the housing and a propellant placed in the housing body and lowering matter in the bottom of it. It has been found that the propellant placed in the bottom of the housing can, with an arrangement of this kind, operate continuously, whether the material is discharged from the housing or not, provided that the propellant lowering the material is stopped when the opening. outlet of the material is closed.
Another characteristic of the invention consists in the application of means which will automatically adjust the value of the descent force exerted by the thruster in the body of the casing and will stop this thruster when the latter encounters a resistance corresponding to a maximum. mum determined in advance.
The invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an apparatus according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken on line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section similar to that of Figure 1 with certain parts removed and showing an alternative embodiment.
FIG. 4 is a vertical section of another constituted variant. by a filling device for filling valve bags by means of propellants
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
mounted on a horizontal axis, and
Figure 5 shows a variant of the device of Figure 4 applied to a bag filling apparatus with a propellant mounted to a vertical shaft.
The embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a housing 10 which receives the material by means of a chute 11 coming from a hopper 12.
A shaft 13 is mounted in the bearing 14, it descends into the .carter, and above the bearing 14 is a toothed wheel
15 fixed in an adjustable manner on the shaft 13 by means of a setting screw 16 or in any other way. The toothed wheel 15 is normally engaged with a wheel 17 placed at the end of a shaft 18 mounted in a support 19 resting on the platform 20. The shaft 18 can be actuated by means of a pulley 21 or in a whole different way.
A support 22 is placed outside the. hopper 12 and in this is screwed a sleeve 23 which fits on the upper end of the shaft 13.
The sleeve 33, is shown as carrying a steering wheel
24 to allow it to be rotated. The lower end of the sleeve 23 is provided with a flange 25 and between this flange and the toothed wheel 15 is disposed a spring 26. A suitable anti-friction device 27 may be interposed between the upper end of the spring and. the flange 25.
In the construction mode shown, the shaft 13 carries agitator arms 28, in the upper part of the casing 10, so as to ensure the descent of the material from the chute into the casing. Paddles 29, 30, 31 and 32, arranged at an angle, are mounted on the shaft and in effect constitute a discontinuous worm which lowers the material.
Immediately above the bottom 33 of the housing is mounted a disc 34, carrying ribs 35, serving to make
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
advancing the material, and disposed approximately radially on its upper surface. The disc 34 and the paddles 35 may be driven by means of a pulley;% 6 mounted on the shaft 37 extending downwardly to. through the bottom 33 of the housing and fixed by means of the disc and the propulsion vanes.
An opening 38 is made in the side of the casing and carries a register 39. This opening is extended into a boss 40; a chute 41 intended to enter the valve of a bag may be connected to the boss 40 by means of a flexible plug 42 or a suitable connection device may be established between the filling chute and the opening made at the bottom. thruster output.
In the construction mode shown, the housing is shown as comprising two of these discharge openings as well as the various appropriate members; the second of these openings bears the same numbers as the first with the addition of the index ', so that the description of one of them is suitable for both. The device can be operated simply with one of these discharge openings, but it is preferable to employ a number of them for reasons which will be indicated later.
During operation of the device, the propellant 35 can rotate steadily if desired.
Bags are successively filled with material discharged from the discharge openings, these openings being closed between the filling of successive bags, if desired. The pulley 36 can rotate steadily and the shaft 13 continues to actuate the propulsion vanes 35 as long as the toothed wheel 15 remains in engagement with the toothed wheel 17.
If the material below the propulsion vanes 35 is compact enough that the rotation
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the paddles lifts the thruster, the shaft 13 and the gear 15, in antagonism to the spring 26, the engagement of the wheel 15 with the pinion 17 ceases automatically and the thrower stops until the pressure exerted below it has diminished sufficiently for the spring 26 to press the wheel 15 against the pinion 17.
In this way, it can be seen that the vanes 35 stop automatically when the discharge opening is closed or, at any time, when the pressure of the material on the vanes 35 exceeds a determined value.
By turning the handwheel 24, this determined value can be varied so as to adapt to the conditions encountered at any time.
By handling substances such as flour, which contains a large amount of air when agitated freely, the paddles are arranged to compress the material to the desired amount and. remove a large portion of the air so that the material is relatively compact as it exits the filler neck. It is easy to see that a device of any suitable shape can be added to the filler neck or to a bag mounted on this spout, and the register can be closed, either by hand or automatically, anyway wanted when the bag is full.
However, in the construction shown, the filling can be stopped without stopping the propellant vanes 35 and the speed of the worm vanes can be adjusted independently of the speed of the propellant vanes. A more flexible setting is thus achieved and, consequently, it is advantageous when filling with different kinds of materials or materials of varying qualities.
In the construction mode shown in figure
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
3, there is an apparatus of the same kind, except as regards the means serving to actuate the vertical propulsion shaft. For this reason, the parts of figure 2 corresponding to those shown in figure 1 are designated with the same references, but with the addition of the letter a, so that it is not necessary to describe them in detail.
Between the bearing 14a mounted on the platform 20a and the bearing 22a projecting from the hopper 12a is a worm wheel 42. The shaft 13a can slide inside the worm wheel 42, but the worm wheel is keyed but slides on it, so that the shaft rotates with the wheel. The wheel 42 is actuated by a worm 43 mounted on the shaft 44 itself driven by an electric motor 45. The other end of the shaft 44 can be mounted in a bracket 46 carried by the platform 20a. . Above the bearing 22a, the shaft 13a is provided with a fixed flange 47 on which weights 48 can be placed in desired number and dimensions.
One of the conductors 49, coming to the electric motor passes through a switch 50; a part 51 slides vertically in the casing of the switch and is provided at its upper end with an anti-friction roller 52 arranged so as to bear against the lower face of the flange 47.
A spring 53 normally lifts a contact 54 against the sliding part 51. During normal operation of the device the weights 48 push the shaft 13a downwards until the flange 47, by means of the parts 51 and 52, applies contact 54 against contact 55 and closes the circuit in the switch. When the vanes 29a meet sufficient resistance to lift the weights 48, the spring 53 lifts the contact 54 away from the contact 55 and the circuit is interrupted, which stops the engine.
It is obvious that the switch device shown is only schematic and that it is possible to replace it, in practice, with well-known switch devices which au-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
will effectively reduce or eliminate sparks when the switch is opened and closed, and if desired, this switch can be used to vary the speed of the motor as well. only to stop the die at a determined maximum and to drive it again when the pressure of the material in the housing decreases.
Other embodiments of the invention are shown in Figures 4 and 5. We will first describe the one shown in Figure 4.
In this mode of construction, there is a casing 10b provided with a chute .il. 0 coming from a hopper 12b. At the lower end of the housing are arranged two branch-mounts 13b and 14b leading to the housings 15b and 16- which surround thrusters 17b and 18b mounted on a horizontal axis 19b driven by a pulley 20b or any other other way. The propellants 17b and 18b discharge the material through filling tubes 21b and 22b respectively, which can enter the valves of the valve bags in known manner.
Above the housing 1 is a platform 23b on which is mounted a bearing 24b receiving the upper end of the shaft 25b. The shaft descends by passing through a bearing 26b formed in the upper part of the housing 10b; it is provided with arms 27b serving to agitate the material and preventing it from stuffing at the point where the chute 11b opens into the housing 10b.
Below the arms 27b are the paddles b
28 performing the propulsion, which lower the material into the housing. At the upper end of the shaft 25b is mounted an angle wheel 29b meshing with a pinion
30b carried by the shaft 31b which passes through a bearing 32b fixed to the hopper 12b and in a bearing 33b carried by the platform 23b Shaft 31b carries a conical pulley
34b, below pulley 34b is a conical pulley 35b arranged in reverse order and having a small cylindrical end 36b. Pulley 35b is actuated
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
anyway decent. A belt 37 passes over the pulleys 34b and 35b and drives the pulley 34b by friction.
The belt 37b is guided by a fork 38b mounted on a worm shaft 39b. A worm 40b mounted on this shaft 39b is operated by a worm wheel 41b, which in turn is driven by a reversible motor 42, bb Just below the shaft 25b, the housing 10 is closed by a cap 43b between which and the main part of the housing is provided a flexible diaphragm 44b. This diaphragm 44b is normally lifted by means of a spring 45b. A pin 46b attached to the diaphragm 44 descends through the cap 43b into the casing 47b of a switch.
It is easily understood that this switch casing can be constructed in practically any known manner, but the construction shown schematically is as follows
A lever 48b is normally lifted against the axle 46b by means of a spring 49b. Above and below the end of the lever 48b are arranged contacts 51b and 52b, and one or more bars 53b arranged at the end of the lever 48b allow these contacts to be connected in the suitable way to obtain the result. following state:
When the spring 45b lifts the diaphragm 44b and allows the spring 49b to lift the bar 53b to come against the contacts 51b, the motor 42b receives current so as to actuate the shaft 39b in the desired direction to bring the belt 37b in the direction. position in which it is shown in the drawing.
In this case, the propellant formed by the vanes is
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
operated at its maximum speed as is easily understood.
Obviously, an automatic switch is provided to stop the motor 42b when the fork 38b reaches its limit of movement in both directions.
When the pressure of the material entrained downwards by the vanes 28b acts on the spring 45b in a sufficient manner to press the lever µ / downwards and make the contact 52b enter j, the motor 42b is actuated in the opposite direction in a reverse direction. driving the fork 38b towards the smaller end of the pulley 35b. If the resulting slowing of the thruster 28b does not result in the earlier release of the diaphragm 44b so as to raise the bar 53b in order to until it is no longer in contact with 52b, the beat belt driven to the left until it passes the pulley 34b and the thruster is stopped.
It can easily be seen that during normal operation of the device, the paddles 28b are driven at a speed such that they press on the diaphragm 44b so as to keep the bar 53b between the contacts 51b and 52b. If the pressure on the diaphragm 44b decreases so that the bar lifts against the contact 51b, the operating speed of the paddles 28b increases and if the pressure on the diaphragm increases so as to press the bar against the contact 52b , the operating speed of the paddles decreases until it finally stops or the pressure is reduced to its normal value., In this way,
a practically constant pressure is maintained on the material sent to the thrusters 17b and 18b regardless of whether these two thrusters or only one of them discharges the material or whether the discharge is practically constant or intermittent .

This substantially constant pressure is desirable for a number of reasons. Some materials jam when compressed too tightly, and the flow stops if the pressure is too low.
Furthermore, this filling device can be adapted to apparatuses which weigh the containers at the same time as they are filled and which cut off the supply to the openings 21b and 22b respectively, when the respective container, being filled, has reached the desired weight. With a device of this kind, it is necessary to set the weighing apparatus so that it operates a little before the desired weight is obtained, since the closing operation cannot be absolutely instantaneous and , therefore, a certain margin should be allowed with regard to the material which is discharged between the moment when the weighing apparatus begins to close the discharge opening and the moment when the closing is completed.
It is immediately understood that with such a construction, varying the rate of discharge during the time that the orifice is closing will vary the total amount of material discharged. Therefore, in order to calculate exactly the amount which is discharged during the shutdown period and hence to obtain the accuracy of the total amount discharged, it is necessary that the discharge be approximately uniform.
It will easily be understood that this uniform flow of material is more easily obtained when a substantially constant pressure is maintained in the housing on the material.
In the construction mode shown in Figure 5, the general operation of the device is
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
same as that of Figure 4, except that instead of moving the material laterally to bring it out of the casing 10ab in the casings where the discharge is finally done, there is provided, at the bottom of the casing 10ab, a discharge chute. . side load 50b able to penetrate into the valve of the bag and a propellant 61b allows the material to be discharged laterally through the chute 60b. The propellant 61b is mounted on a vertical shaft 62b driven by a keyed pulley 63b and sliding thereon. Under the thruster 61b is provided a plate 64b lifted by a spring 65b against an anti-friction bearing 66b on which the thruster 61b rests.
The upward movement of the thruster is limited by a diaphragm 67b which closes the space between the plate 64b and the walls of the casing 10ab. The lower end 46ab of the shaft 62b acts in the same way as the rod 46b to operate a switch disposed in the casing 47ab, which in turn can regulate the operation of the shaft 25ab with its paddles 28 '. in the same way that the shaft 25b and the vanes 28b are adjusted by the action of the rod 46b.
Other modifications can be made in the construction of apparatuses in accordance with the invention, while remaining within the scope thereof.
