Un mode d'exécution de l'invention est représenté à titre d'exemple aux dessins annexés dans lesquels: la figure 1 est une vue en coupe élévation du car- ter vu de face;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
partie quelconque (longerons, chassis, ressorts, pont arrière etc...).

DEVICE FOR CONSTANTLY KEEPING TIGHT THE TOWING CABLE OF A VEHICLE
We know all the disadvantages of towing vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, locomobiles, etc. by means of a flexible cable. When, for some reason, the towing vehicle slows down its speed in a turn, by braking in a descent, etc ... the towed car, as a result of the speed acquired, approaches the towing vehicle, the cable slackens, dragging on the ground and risk, either by getting caught in the wheels of one of the two vehicles, or by getting caught in any obstacle, of causing an accident. In addition, due to its friction with the ground, it wears out very quickly. In addition, the starting is done suddenly as soon as the cable is tight.
On the other hand, towing by rigid rods has drawbacks of bulkiness, making the

difficult bends, hinders the towed vehicle in its movements and risks causing accidents, the towing car which is frequently not specially equipped for this use, not always having brakes powerful enough to stop two cars suddenly in case of surprise.
In addition, this device can hardly be used except for the towing of trailers proper, with the exception of passing vehicles which must only be towed accidentally *
The object of the present invention is a device making it possible to keep the towing cable constantly taut and consequently to retain the indisputable advantages of towing using a flexible cable without having the drawbacks which have just been pointed out. It also eliminates all the jerks that occur with the usual towing rope as a result of poor road conditions, a change of speed of the towing car, a brake stroke etc ... This device, which is very small in size, can be taken on board any motor vehicle, allowing it to be towed in the event of a breakdown.
It essentially consists of a housing, which can be easily fixed by means of bolts, either on the vehicle to be towed, or on the towing car and enclosing a drum on which the cable is wound, one end of which is fixed to the said drum, a return spring constantly tending to rotate this drum in the direction of the winding of the cable * The free end of the cable is fixed, if necessary by means of a spring with very tight sausage, on the other

vehicle with any suitable attachment device
An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is an elevational sectional view of the housing seen from the front;
Figure 2 is a sectional view, at 90, of the previous one; FIG. 3 is an elevational view of the casing, on the side opposite to FIG. 1; Figures 4 and 5 show the attachment members of the apparatus on one of the vehicles and, Figure 6 shows the cable hooking members on the other vehicle.
The apparatus consists of a housing 1 comprising two bearings 0 and 3 in which a drum can rotate, consisting of two parts of different diameters 4 and 5. On the part of the smallest diameter 4 acts a spring 6, of variable power and shape, while the large diameter part 5 laterally carries two cheeks 7 and 8 and serves as a spool for winding the cable 9, steel, of a size appropriate to the weight of the vehicle to be remo rque r.
The end of the cable is fixed to the drum by welding, riveting, wedging etc ... the means of the drum may for example include a spiral groove 10 (fig. 1) at the bottom of which at 11 is the fixing of the cable , this arrangement facilitating the winding thereof.
The cable exits the housing 1 through a suitable opening 12 and is attached at its other end to a bracket 13 whose arms are threaded and which is fixed by means of the plate 14 and the nuts 15 (fig, 6) on a

any part (side members, chassis, springs, rear axle, etc.). One or more tension springs
16 can advantageously be interposed between the cable 9 and the bracket 13.
The device is fixed, in a fixed or removable manner, on one of the vehicles which will generally be the vehicle to be towed, but which could also be the towing vehicle, and also in any appropriate place thereof. This fixing can be done for example in the manner shown in the drawings, On the housing 1 is fixed a plate 17 (Figures 2 and 3) pierced with a number of threaded blind holes 18, arranged in a circle. On the other hand, on the other side of the frame is placed an annular plate 19 (figure 6) drilled with an equal number of holes 20 and the fixing is done by means of threaded rods 21 (figure 4) provided with a head 22 and a lock nut 23, which pass through the plate 19 and screw into the blind holes 18 of the plate 17.
In general, four bolts will suffice to ensure this fixing, but a larger number of holes 18 and 20 are provided so that those whose use is most convenient can be chosen.
In general, it will be advantageous to fix the device and the bracket 13 in such a way that the cable is oblique with respect to the axis of the vehicles, that is to say such gue, if the device is fixed. for example on the right side of one of the vehicles, the caliper is fixed on the left side of the other or vice versa.
Of course, the casing will be of all dimensions appropriate to the size of the apparatus and the details of form and construction as well as the fastening system may differ from those which have been described and shown below. spirit of invention.

Thanks to this device, the cable, which is constantly asked to wind up on the drum 6, always remains stretched and never trails on the ground, the two vehicles only approaching each other when the effort exeroé on the cable decreases. In addition, the starting is done very gradually, the drive starting to take place before the cable is fully unwound, thanks to the power of the spring 6 which compresses and tends to cause the start of the vehicle. ture as the cable unwinds.
