 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  "Treatment of ether-salts and ether-oxides of cellulose".

     It is known that in the manufacture of ether salts and ether oxides of cellalose a strong degradation of the cellulose molecule occurs, which greatly affects the strength of the product. This degradation is particularly strong, among other cases, also with acetylcellulose, which can be seen from the fact that this cellulose derivative, when it is treated to form artificial silk, has a relatively strong resistance. weak at breakage and, when processed to form celluloid, difficulties are encountered because the solations of this product exhibit a low tendency to gelatinize.

   Surprisingly, it has now been found that if ether salts or ether oxides of cellulose in a suitable solvent are treated with phosphorus compounds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 phore containing halogens, a strong polymerization takes place, which is recognized by the fact that the solutions assume an extremely higher viscosity than the solutions of the starting material and that they produce in some cases already in much higher concentration. weak, strongly gelatinizing solutions. It is advantageous in this operation to add certain amounts of an organic base, such as, for example, pyridine, quinoline, aniline and the like.

   For example, 10 kg of an acetylcellulose, which in a 10% solution in 40 acetone had a viscosity (measured by absolute measure) of 10 was dissolved in 200 kg. acetone, 300 gt. of phosphorus oxychloride and 1 kg of pyridine were added to the solution and it was left for two hours at room temperature. The solution was then precipitated with water. The product thus obtained dissolved in acetons, but in a 10% solution formed a gelatin-like solid mass which is preferably suitable for the manufacture of celluloid.

     The experiment being repeated? The same way but using 100 gr. of phosphorus oxychlorare and 350 gr. From pyridine, an acetylcellulose was obtained of a viscosity which was remarkably suitable for spinning to give artificial silk.

   The process can be varied in many ways.

  For example, instead of phosphorus oxychloride, it is possible to use hosphere trichloride, phosphorus sulfochloride and phosphorus pentochloride and also phosphorus compounds which contain an organic radical, such as for example phosphine chloride (phenylchloride of phosphorus). phosphine, diethylaminochlorare

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 phosphine and analogous compounds), besides the compounds derived from these phosphines by introduction of oxygen, sulfur or other halogen atoms and, moreover, the halogenated organic compounds of phosphorus which contain the organic radical in formation similar to ether oxide or ether salt, such as, for example, phenoxylophosphoric acid dichloride and the like.

   What is essential is that the compound contains both phosphorus and halogen at the same time.

   The amount of the phosphorus compound is therefore determined according to the extent to which the starting material to be polymerized was degraded and according to the degree of viscosity which is ultimately desired. Some examples are given in the experiments described. But can we modify by increasing or decreasing the quantities indicated according to the poarsaivi goal in each case.

  When using larger amounts of the phosphorus compound the product may lose its solubility in acetone.

   If an organic base is added, its amount may be equivalent to that of the phosphorus compound, but it does not need to be; small amounts also have a clear effect.

     The solvent should be chosen so that it does not contain as many components as possible which destroy the phosphorus oxychloride. As a general rule, depending on the properties of the ether-salt to be treated, acetone, chloroform or an ether-oxide will be chosen. But if the solvent contains constituents which destroy phosphorus oxychloride, an excess of oxychlorare should be added accordingly. The amount of the total solvent need not be so large that all the acetate to be treated is dissolved. '
It is not necessary, as has been described

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in the examples, to precipitate the product treated with the phosphorus compound.

   It is small, on the contrary, to also treat it in the reaction solution itself, if necessary after preliminary filtration. with or without new addition.

   It has already been proposed to carry out the acetylation of cellulose so that phosphorus oxychlorare is added to the mixture of crystallizable acetic acid-acetic anhydride. But in c. case the solvent is a substance which reacts with phosphorus oxychloride, and in fact this process means nothing more than being performed. acetylation with acetyl chloride, which is formed starting from phosphorus oxychlorare and crystallizable acetic anhydride (See the work Hess, Cellulosechemie, volume 389).

   For this reason the polymerization phenomena observed in the present invention do not occur in this process and to produce these phenomena the original etherification mixtures, as well as the saponification mixture used in the manufacture of the secondary acetate. re, are not appropriate. Too much of the phosphorus compounds in question would have to be added. The new process is therefore characterized by the fact that the treatment with phosphorus compounds is completed until the product, separated from the original reaction mixture, which is brought into a suitable new solvent.
