Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

     1;'organe de serrage 60 (Figure 1) comporte un doigt latéral 89 faisant saillie par une fente hori- zontale 90 de la plaque d'arrêt 91 (Figure 9), qui est articulée en 55 sur la patte 3 et comporte à son extré- mité antérieure une patte 92o En raison de la liaison décrite de l'organe de serrage 60 avec le verrou 82, cette plaque d'arrêt 91 est basculée vers le bas chaque fois que l'organe de serrage 60 est basculé par le ressort 85, pour abaisser la patte 92 en avant du bord antérieur des rubans superposés pour empêcher leur désalignement acci- dentel et, lorsque l'organe de serrage est de nouveau dégagé, à savoir lorsque le verrou 82 est abaissé par le mouvement d'ouverture de la machine, cette plaque est pivotée vers le haut autour de son pivot 55 de manière commandée,

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 22>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 23>

  Assembly of metal strapping or strapping bands and machine used to do so.

   The object of the present invention is a system for assembling metal straps, metal strapping bands, etc., and a machine for producing this assembly, this machine indeed, which can be used above all for strapping packages by means of metal bands which can be used. recess to be applied with advantage to join and firmly bind any two ends of any flat strip of metal
The assembly is carried out by this machine by deforming the superimposed ends of the tape to form

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 .tube rolls one of which is inserted into the other and then embossing or creasing the walls of these rolls.

   The machine used to produce the assembly therefore comprises two jaws, which are applied by a system of levers articulated against the overlapping ends of the tape and which transform the ends superimposed on the flat tape into rollers inserted one in the same. Other, then emboss or otherwise deform these rollers to prevent them from moving axially with respect to each other. This movement of the jaws is performed using a system of articulated levers of which the jaws are part.

   The machine also comprises an improved device for determining the position of the ends of the tape and for placing them properly one on top of the other.

  It also includes a new and improved device for applying tension to the tape, this tensioning device being combined with mechanisms which prevent the application of excessive tension force to the tape. The tensioning device and the clamping devices are arranged so that the parts of the tape on which the jaws operate are left untensioned *
The invention also extends to a device for cutting one end of the tape, which operates in a predetermined time relation with the mechanism forming the assembly or the tensioning mechanism,

   and to improvements made to the strapping tapes particularly suitable for the production of this assembly by entanglement or mutual blocking of the superimposed ends

 tape. These improved strapping tapes are characterized by a section the center of which is slightly curved with respect to the areas adjacent to the edges of the tape, the longitudinal edges of the tape being, however, again in the plane of its central part.

   Figures 24 and 25 are cross sections of different shapes of joints,
Figures 26 to 28 show one form of assembly in plan seen from above, in side elevation and in plan seen from below, respectively.

   Figure 29 is a top view of a modified assembly.

   Figure 30 is a schematic cross section, on a larger scale, of a strapping tape according to the invention.

   The machine is mounted on a plate 1, intended to be placed on a package B and which comprises two flat extensions 57 and 58, projecting forward and having rounded front edges (Figures 2 and 14) and a recess 56, reserved between these extensions, to facilitate the positioning and deformation of the flat tape S. Two raised tabs 2 and 3 rise on top of the plate 1, preferably behind the extensions 57 and 58 .

   Two levers 5 and 6 are respectively supported by a transverse axis 4 passing through the rear parts of the legs 2 and 3 (Figures 2 and 14). These levers 5 'and 6 each comprise, between their ends, an arm 7 and their pivot axis passes through these arms *.

   The two parallel levers 5 and 6 are connected, at their front ends, by a strong bar 8 (figures 8, 9, 10 and 14) which also serves as a common point of oscillation for the supporting frame of the jaws, this

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 which makes that this frame can be tilted around the transverse axis 40
The jaw 13 is held, removably, for example by screws 47 (Figures 19 and 20) in the enlarged head 12 of one of the die holders or lever 11, and the cooperating jaw 15 is supported, in a similar fashion. gue, in another head 14. This head 14 constitutes a transverse connecting element between two strong levers or die holders 9 and 10, also pivotally supported on the transverse bar 8 and arranged at the rate of one on each side of the door -matrices 11.

   The frame of the jaws 13, 15 therefore comprises the central lever 11 and the two side levers.
9 and 10, and it can oscillate, as a whole, around the axis of the support bar 80 The central lever 11 and the respective combined side levers 9, 10 are associated with an articulated device shown in particular in the figures. figures 19 and 20 respectively in open and closed positions
The articulated system combined with the central die holder 11 consists of a system of levers 17, comprising two parallel levers connected, between their ends, by a pin 20 passing through the die holder II; these levers 17 are also connected at their outer ends, by a transverse pin (Figures 4, 19 and 20).

   The other die-holder 14, comprising the parallel lateral arms 9 and 10, is associated with the other articulated system 16 by means of a pin 19 passing through the arms 9 and 10 and receiving between them an extension. 18 of the articulated system 16. The two articulated systems 16 and 17 are interconnected by a pin 24,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 which is guided in longitudinal slots; 22 of extensions 21 of levers 5 and 6.

   The ends 23 of the pin 24 are flattened in these slots to be held against rotation. "
The articulated system 16, associated with the levers 9, 10, comprises a handle 28 and is further provided with a toothed sector 25, intended to be actuated by a pinion 26 mounted on the shaft 27, which also serves as a connecting device for the spaced parallel elements of the articulated system 17.

   Therefore, although the articulated systems 16 and 17 can be easily moved by means of the handle 28, together and without necessarily altering their mutual angular relative position, to bring them from the inoperative open position shown in Figure 18 to the position of Figure 19, and, may be moved still further - as they change their relative angular mutual position - to come to occupy a position in which teeth 25 begin to engage with pinion 26, the final operation of jaw closure is effected by rotation of pinion 26, which then rotates on toothed sector 25 and tilts it forward to bring the members to the jaw closed position or assembly forming position of Figure 20 ,

   in which the articulated lever system is fully tensioned *
The rotation of the pinion 27 is ensured in this direction by a crank 29, which can be connected with this pinion by a ratchet wheel 30, fixed to the projecting end of the shaft 27, but supported for rotation in a caliper 33. This caliper comprises two lateral flanges 31 and 32 (Figures 1 and 6), mounted for free rotation on

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 the shaft 27, while an offset portion 34 of the crank terminating in a nose 36, is articulated at 35 on the caliper. This nose 36 is established to engage the ratchet wheel to rotate it in a positive direction (Figure 18). The lever 17 is provided with a spring latch 37 articulated on it at 38.

   When the crank is rotated in the negative direction (Figure 8) thereby rotating the caliper 33 in that direction, and when this crank then reaches an approximately vertical position, it swings around the axis 35 in such a way that its nose 36 is released from the ratchet wheel 26 (Figure 6, dotted line), due to the weight of the cranks The ratchet wheel 30 and the pinion 26 are then free to turn and the sector 25 and the lever 16 'can be tilted freely backwards or forwards In this position of the caliper 33, a notch 40 of the latter is then located in front of the hook 39 of the spring latch 37, which engages in this notch under the action of the spring 41, bearing on a tab 42 of the latch,

   so as to hold the crank to prevent 1 turning in the negative direction again. However, a short rotational movement in the positive direction pull the caliper 33 out of this locking position.

   To limit the rocking movement of levers 5 and 6, a split bar 43 is articulated at 44 to a tab 45 provided on the plate 1 and the pin 24 also passes through a slot 46 provided in the bar 43 (Figures 8 and 18)
The clamping devices 59, 60 serving to place the two parts 53, 63 of the strapping tape S are mounted above the extensions 57 and 58 of the machine support plate.

   To determine the exact point of introduction of part 53 of the metal tape, a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 plate 54 (Figure 9) is articulated very freely on a pin 55 fixed to the lug 3; the tape 53 is placed with its free end against this stop plate 54 and it is passed around the box or glued * The clamping pieces 59 and 60 are articulated at 61,62 to the respective tabs 2 and 3 and protrude towards the top, at their inner ends by engaging in a slot in the corresponding tab (Figure 2).

   The clamps are fitted with ratchet teeth on their undersides (Figure 4) to hold the parts 63, 63 of the strapping tape against movement, outward on the sides of the machine, but to allow each of the strapping. parts of the ribbon to be pulled inward for tightening. A plate 64 fixed to the plate 1 (Figure 5) overhangs the extension 57 (Figure 4) at a height slightly greater than the thickness of the part 53 of the tape. Therefore, after a strapping tape S has been placed under the clamp 59 and passed. around box or package B (Figure 4) from left to right and under the clamp 60, the free end 63 of the tape can be placed on top of the plate 64.

   In order to positively push the clamps 59 and 60 down against the tape; .during the insertion of the latter on the front of the machine, sheet metal brackets 65, 66 are articulated to the legs 2, 3 by pins 69 and 70 which also pass through the side plates 67, 68 of these brackets ( Figures 1, 4 and 8). The outer plates 68 of these 'stirrups are extended forward, as indicated at 76, and they are each embraced by another sheet metal stirrup 75 maintained

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 pivotally in place on them by a pin 77 (Figures 22 and 23). The inner arm of each stirrup has an extension 79 facing downward and having a shoulder 88 also facing downward.

   A lateral projection 80 of each extension 79 enters the vertical form 81 of a latch 82 mounted on the axle
77 so as to take a slight vertical movement thanks to the slot 83 provided at its upper end (Figure 23) 'The parts 82 have front protruding heels 84 against which the parts 53, 63 of the strapping tape are pressed when these parts of the ribbon are inserted into the machine. The parts 82 are therefore tilted slightly backwards due to their pivoting mounting at 77 on the caliper 75.

   Since the one-piece extension 80 with the downward facing shoulder 88 engages the slot in the part 82, this shoulder 83 is also tilted back. Before this tilting movement of the shoulder, the latter being engaged, from above, with the finger 86. projecting from the side of the corresponding clamping member, such as for example the right-hand clamping member 60 (Figure 4).

   The shoulder 88 is therefore now withdrawn and a spring 85, fixed to the part 82 near its upper part at 87 and also connected to the extended finger 86 of the clamping member, then strongly pulls the outer end of the finger 86 towards upwards, thus causing the clamping member to pivot around its pivot 62 to bring it into engagement with the tape 63 which is at the same time drawn inwardly on the extension 58 of the support plate of the machine.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   Also when the insertion of a band is complete, the clamps are firmly pressed into engagement with the top of the strapping tape by the corresponding springs 85. The posterior edge of the tape engages the band. anterior edge of the heel, 84 of the piece 82 which is thereby held against any forward tilting movement and the stirrup 75 carrying the shoulder 88 facing downwards is also tilted back by the insertion of the tape , the shoulder 88 being raised from the upper edge of the finger 86 of the corresponding clamping member.

   The brackets 65 and 66 as well as the dependent brackets 75 and the locks 82 are associated in their operation with the levers 5 and 6 by means of arms ..., articulated 71, pivoted at 72 to the arm 7 of these levers and penetrating through their rounded head 73 into corresponding housings 74 provided in the arms 68 of the brackets 65 and 66.

   During the insertion of the tape the machine is in the open position shown in figure 18 and when now the articulated system 16, 17 is tilted together, for example by grasping the handle 28 to rotate it around the transverse axis 4. this rocking movement causes a rocking movement of the arms 5 and 6 around this axis, so that the articulated arm 71 also changes its position from that shown in figure 18 to that shown in figure 8.

  This last figure shows the machine at the end of the assembly operation, after the relative movement of the articulated levers 16 and 17 to the maximum extent. But it should be observed that the arms 5 and 6 do not change their position after the articulated system and the chassis

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 have been brought to the position where the pinion 26 begins to attack the sector 25.

   Consequently, the control elements of the clamping members are then in the position shown in FIG. 8, which is produced by the movement of the arms 5 and 6 going into the position of the latter figure. The articulated lever 71, during the movement from the position of figure 18 to that of figure 8, swings the caliper 65 or 66 respectively, about the axis 70 in a direction in the front part of the this stirrup bearing on the spindle 77 the stirrup 75: is raised.

   Due to this upward movement the latch 82 is also raised with the anterior face of the heel 84 sliding upward on the posterior edge of the inserted tape. This upward movement of the latch 82 is continued until the lower edge of the heel 84 has passed the rear edge of the inserted ribbon, after which, under the action of the spring 85, this latch 82 is tilted forward around the axis 77 ae so that it overhangs low height or with a vacuum the inserted ribbon.

   The caliper 75 is also forced to tilt forward, because its tab 60 passes through the slot 81 of the latch 82 and, as the shoulder 88 facing downwards, also forms a part of the extension 79 of the caliper 75, this shoulder 88 is also tilted forward to be in a desired position to attack again from above the extension 86 of the clamping member without however actually attacking the top of this extension.

   If now, after the assembly operation is finished, the machine has to be released again and the frame brought back by tilting it into the position

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 in Figure 18 there is also a rocking movement of the stirrups 65 and 66, through the articulated levers 71 connected with these stirrups and with the arms 5 and 6 of the frame. As a result, the anterior end of the yoke is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 18, resulting in the latch 82 being lowered against the top of the inserted tape.

  However, since this lock is resiliently connected with the extension 86 of the clamping member, it simply bears on the tape, which is still in the machine, under the friction produced by the spring 85. During the movement of lowering the caliper 66 from the position shown in figure 8 to the position shown in figure 18, which is induced by the opening of the articulated system, the caliper 77 is also tilted towards down to attack once more with its shoulder facing down 88 the finger 86 of the clamp.

   When the machine is then moved back to release the assembly and the tape or when the crate or package is removed from under the machine after the tape has been applied, the shoulder 88 prevents the clamp from rising to its end. outside, so that the spring 85 pulls the latch 82 down again to the position shown in Figure 18, where the latch foot 84 is again ready to be engaged by the next tape to be placed in. the machine.

   It can therefore be seen that the control of the clamping members is provided in part by the strapping tape during its insertion and in part by the movement of the frame.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

     1; the clamping member 60 (Figure 1) comprises a lateral finger 89 projecting through a horizontal slot 90 of the stop plate 91 (Figure 9), which is articulated at 55 on the tab 3 and comprises at its front end a tab 92o Due to the described connection of the clamping member 60 with the latch 82, this stop plate 91 is tilted downwards each time the clamping member 60 is tilted by the spring. 85, to lower tab 92 forward of the leading edge of the superimposed tapes to prevent their accidental misalignment and, when the clamp is released again, that is, when the latch 82 is lowered by the opening movement of the tape. the machine, this plate is pivoted upwards around its pivot 55 in a controlled manner,

   to be out of the path of the next ribbon in front, to be inserted
The lever 5 can be associated in its operation with a knife 93, placed between the lever 9 and the plate 64 (Figures 4 and 7). This knife is constructed in the form of an angled lever pivoted at 94 on the plate and comprising a vertical arm 100. This vertical arm receives, in a circular housing 99, the head 98 of an articulated arm 97, which is pivoted. on the axis 72 connecting the side arms 7 of the levers 5 and 6. Since the lower part of the plate 64 is also provided with a cutting edge 95 the tape is cut in a rut way when the levers 5 and 6 are tilted forward to come to the position shown in Figures 7 and 8.

   During the assembly forming operation, which takes place while the levers 5 and 6 are held in the position of Figures 7 and 8, the knife is positively held in engagement with the free end of the blade.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 top strand 63 of the tape, thereby keeping that pressurized end flat and tightly con. be the lower strand of the tape, to prevent bending or other deformation of this part of the tape.

   In order to lock the jaw levers 11, 9 and 10 in the relatively open position (Figure 19) as they are jointly swung around axis 4 from the position of Figure 18 to that of Figure 19, the lever 5 carries a locking bar 101 (Figure 5), which is articulated on the axis 8 and is normally held against any tilting movement caused by gravity around this axis 8 by the pin 24. This bar 101 is provided with its anterior end of a short foot 102 intended to engage a rounded protrusion 103 of the tray.

   The rear end of the bar 101 has a recess 104 and when the pin 23 has approached the end of the slot 22 (Figure 18), the bar 101 tilts under the effect of its own weight around the pi - vot 8 and thus blocks at 104 the axis 24 of the articulated levers against any return movement * When the arms 5, 6 have been tilted forward to a certain extent, the foot 102 of the bar 101 attacks the projecting part 103 (Figure 5) and the bar 101 is then tilted to disengage the pin 23 from the locking notch 104 and, from this moment, the system of articulated levers 16, 17 can be actuated to bring the jaws 13, 15 to the final or closed position (Figure 20).

   When the crank 29 has been locked so that no rotation of the pinion 26 can take place as, for example, by the retention of 1 ratchet caliper 31,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

32 by the pawl 37, it is still possible to grasp the handle 28 of the lever system 16 to tilt it back and thereby disengage the jaws of the assembly produced.
In order to stretch the tape before the assembly is formed, the plate 1 is extended on the left at 105 (Figures 1 and 4) and it carries an articulated hand lever 106, which is resiliently held in the posi - vertical tion by the spring 164 (Figure 3), attacking a tab 107.

   This hand lever is connected by a connecting rod
122 with a bar 121, the front end of which 128 engages between the pins 129 and 130 of a tensioning device for the strapping tape.
A wing 108 adjacent to the front edge of plate 1 pivotally supports two crank arms 109 and 110m, the free ends of which carry pins 129 and 130.

  These cranks 109 and 110 are assembled by pins 113,
114 with a stirrup 111, comprising a posterior branch 112 and an anterior branch 115. The clamping device 116 is pivotally held on the axis 114, between the two branches 112 and 115 (FIG. 21); this clamping device is pushed back by a spring 117 and it carries an anterior foot plate 118, the front edge of which is folded upwards at 116 '(Figure 21) to facilitate the introduction of the strapping tape between it. the plate and the extension 119 of the branch 112. The underside of the clamping device is again toothed at 120 (Figure 15).

   The axis 123 (Figure 1) which connects the connecting rod 122 to the bar 121, also serves for fixing a spring 125 extending from the axis 123 to another axis 126 mounted in a lug 127 of the plate. 122 has a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 slot 124 allowing limited movement of the connecting rod 122 independently of the bar 121,
The rear end of the bar 121 is hingedly connected to a connecting rod 135, the end of which
 EMI16.1
 opposite is articulated at 13'7 to a cam.1S6 / supported at 138 on the arm 139 of an elbow lever 140, which swings on the pivot 141 fixed to the plate. A lever 142, mounted at 144 on the other arm of the angled lever 140 carries a roller 143, which is resiliently urged into engagement with the edge of the cam 136 by a spring 145.

   A screw 150 passes so as to be able to turn through the tab 127 of the plate and carries a nut 151, part of which passes through a slot 153 provided in an extension 146 of the arm of the bent lever 140. The cam 156- also has an arcuate recess 149 into which the roller 143 normally rests.

   If the tensioning hand lever 106 is tilted to the left against the action of the spring 125, the clamp 116 is moved to the left with this lever and tension the strapping tape. In the return movement of the hand lever 106, the clamping member 116 is also returned to the right without acting on the strapping tape, but given that the clamping member 59. holds the tape against movement., the tape is not released in the movement of the clamp 116 to the right, but the subsequent movement of the hand lever 106 gives greater tension to the tape.

   When the latter has been sufficiently tensioned, the tension of the spring 145, exerted against the cam 136 by the roller 143 subjected to the action of this spring, is overcome by the tension of the tape and the roller 143 rolls on the surface. in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 arc-shaped 148 of the cam and allows the bar 121 to be returned to the position shown in FIG. 1.

   The assumed positions of the elements of the tensioning device which are shown in figure 1 indicate that sufficient tension is applied to the strapping tape to proceed with an assembly operation and when these positions are taken an overvoltage of the tape is prevented. in any case Instead of directly actuating the knife by lever 5 (Figure 7) this knife can be combined with the tensioning device described, as shown in Figures 1 and 14.

   The rear end of the bar 121 articulated at 131 to a slider 132 which, in accordance with FIG. 14, rests on the bottom of the plate 1 and is guided to take a linear movement by screws 133 passing through the slot 134 of the slider. . The opposite end of this slider 132 normally rests in front of the foot 161 of a vertical console 160, which is guided by a console 157, mounted on the platform to move perpendicular to the slider 132. The top of this console is connected with a bar 156, also guided by the console 157.

   A spring 158 bears, 'by its rear end against this guide console 157 and by its front end against a flange 159 of the bar 1560 The front part of this bar 156 is in the form of a hook, as indicated at 163, to come in engagement with the nose 155 of the knife lever 154, which is pivotally mounted on the axis 94. When the lever 5 returns from the position shown in solid lines (Figure 14) to the position shown in dotted lines, a finger 162 mounted on this lever 5 slides against the back of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 arm 154 to bring the nose 155 of this arm in locking connection with the hook 163 of the bar 156.

   The knife is thus tilted into the open position and the bar 156 and the console 160 are also brought back *
Consequently, while in the first cutting device described with reference to Figures 1 and 7, the operation of the knife is made dependent on the closing movement of the articulated frame serving to control the jaws, in the variant which has just been described. To be described, this cutting operation depends on the operation of the tension lever 106 and ensures that the tape is cut during the movement of this tension lever and in particular during the last phase of this movement.

   Figures 15 to 17 show an alternative tensioning mechanism independent of the cutting mechanism. The hand lever 106 is articulated on the plate between the flange 108 and the tab 168 connected to this flange. The lower part of the hand lever is provided with extensions 166 and 167, arranged between the flange 108 and the tab 168 of the plate, which are traversed by the pin 164 .. A spring 169 is wound on the pin 164 between the extensions 166 and 167 of the hand lever and has opposing parts engaging the plate and these extensions for normally push the hand lever 106 to the right, as shown in figure 15.

   A particular characteristic of both embodiments of the tensioning mechanism consists in the constitution of the bottom 118 of the clamping member 116, thanks to which a part 116 'falls on the front edge of the strip. when the tape has been pushed back under this member, thus preventing the movement of the tape accidentally or otherwise *

The construction of the dies or jaws is shown in Figures 10 to 12.

   They are mounted in the heads 12 and 14 of their supports and are provided with teeth 50 and 51, respectively, which are offset with respect to circular recesses 48 and 499 These recesses alternate with teeth or grooves 52, so that the combined depth of these grooves 58 corresponds substantially to the width of the tape to form the assembly. It is evident, however, that instead of these jaws or embossing dies, other shapes can be imagined and, again depending on the choice of these shapes, the conformation of the die itself can be varied.

   The invention extends to an assembly such as that shown in Figures 24-29, which is suitable to be formed on substantially flat metal tapes between the ends 171 and 172 of the tape after it has been stretched around. the box, crate, crate, bale or other similar package.

   Assembly
173 is formed between the ends 171 and 1.72, and it is of substantial length, but sufficiently inside the ends 171 and 172, to allow these ends, when the assembly is complete, to rest. flat against the body of the ribbon 170, as represented by. example in Figure 27. The assembly 173 is formed by rolling the intermediate portions of the overlapping ends 171 and 172 of the strapping tape transversely, the two overlapping portions of the tape being rolled transversely about a common axis.

   In forming assembly 173, the initial operation is to roll the overlapping portions of the tape, and then, when the two rollers are compactly formed ;, as shown in Figures 24 and 25, they finally mount.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 20>

 embossed transversely to the rollers so as to interlock and retain the rolled parts in their assembled positions.

   As shown in FIGS. 26, 27 and 28, by means of suitable devices, the rollers 174 and 175 of the assembly 173 may be shaped so that they have a series of peripheral ribs 176, 176, etc. grooves 177, 177, etc. - which alternate between them, while on the, side. Opposite to the assembly 173, a series of similar peripheral ribs 178 and grooves 179 may be provided. Preferably, the grooves 177 and 179 are slightly narrower than the ribs 176 and 178, so that, as shown in Fig. 26, the grooves 179, for example, may extend a short length in. the adjacent ribs 176, thereby forming parts 180, 180, etc.

   at the junctions of the ribs and grooves, which serve to essentially reinforce the assembly and to prevent the ends of the strapping tape from being separated under a tensile force.

   It will be appreciated that in the assembly form described the ribs and grooves of one of the halves of the assembly are staggered with respect to the ribs and grooves on the other side of the assembly.

   Sufficiently long portions 181 and 182 are provided between the ends of the assembly 173 and the ends 171 and 172 of the tape 170 which are flared outwardly from the ends of the assembly to the ends of the tape, so that the parts 181 and 182 can be gradually shaped from the round shape of the rollers to the flat shape of the tape, as shown in Figures 27 and 28.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

   As shown by fibers 24 and 25, the outer edges 183 and 184 of the rolled portions of the assembly either abut substantially against the opposing borus 185 and 186 or overlap these opposing edges.

   As a variant of the assembly, one can provide (as shown in figure 29) a series of V-shaped or triangle-shaped ribs 187, 187, etc. and of grooves 188,188, etc., these grooves 188 blocking each other. - tally with the ribs 187. In this form of assembly, the ribs lE'7 and the grooves 188 may be continuous around the periphery of the assembly 173, or there may be two series of these ribs and these. grooves to match the transverse ribs and grooves of the shape shown in figure 26.

   It is also possible to arrange the ribs and grooves helically around the assemblies 173, or otherwise, without departing from the spirit of the invention; it is only necessary in this case to reinforce and mutually block the rolled parts of the assembly, so that they withstand the usual tension and stresses.

   The ribbon shape of this strapping shown in cross section in Figure 30 shows that the area. central longitudinal 200 of this. tape is substantially in the same plane with the longitudinal edges 201, while between this zone 200 and the edges 201 the tape is curved upwards at 202. Not only does this particular conformation of the tape facilitate embossing, comparatively. to ordinary flat ribbon, but also removes the defect of other ribbons, especially

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

 that of hanging packages placed on top of each other when they are moved transversely to these strapping tapes.

   In operation, .. the sequence of operations is as follows: Looking at the front of the machine and the machine being suitably placed on a box, a metal tape is passed and pulled around the box, the left part of this tape being pushed to the right until the end of the tape meets plate 54 and the tape is then pushed, back to the desired position behind tab 92 and plate 91, over the feet 57 and 58 and under the clamp '59. Then the right end of the tape is pushed to the left through the machine, under the plates 54 and 91 - and on the foot 58, from there on the cutting block 64, on the clamping member. 59, then on the foot 119 and under the clamping member 116.

   The tape is then pushed back into position behind the tab 92 of the plate and behind the tab 116 'of the clamping member 116. After that, the hand lever 106 is moved back and forth a sufficient number of times. to properly tension the tape in the machine, after which, when the correct tape tension is obtained, the knife operates to cut the correct length of tape from a roll of that tape.

   After cutting, the levers 16 and 17, which have been locked together by means of the arm 101, the handle 28, the sector 25, the lever 16 and the lever 17 are moved forward a short distance or up to that the jaws have reached a position in which they are opposite the edges of the two layers of tape.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 23>

   A further movement of handle 28 forward, until sector gear 25 is engaged by pinion 26, serves to close the jaws tightly on the overlapping ends of the strapping tape. After closing the jaws, crank 29 is rotated in a positive direction to move the toothed sector forward to the maximum extent.

   When this cycle of operations has been completed, the shaping and embossing of the joint or assembly are completely carried out and the two superimposed ends of the tape are completely made solic.aires by reciprocal locking, in such a way that they do not separate under ordinary stress.

   The crank 29 is then rotated in the negative direction, until the spring latch 37 operates to release it. handle 28 of the ratchet and this handle 28 is moved back to the maximum extent, which serves to return the machine to the starting position to prepare for the execution of a new assembly.
