  MACHINE A CERCLER DES COLIS OU D'AUTRES OBJETS A L'AIDE DE
FEUILLARD.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  MACHINE FOR STRAPPING PARCELS OR OTHER OBJECTS USING
STRAP.

   This invention relates to an improved machine for strapping parcels, bundles of goods, boxes and the like using a more or less flexible tie such as a metal strip of the commonly used type. called "strip".

   It is known that, in the strapping technique, establishing more than one joint of the ordinary type at one time involving severing and / or deformation of the overlapping portions of the strap constitutes most often a task which exceeds the physical force of the person operating the strapping machine and yet it is necessary to produce several such joints to give the region where the strip joins a solidity comparable to that that has the rest of its length.

   The strapping machine which forms the subject of the invention has been specially designed with a view to enabling the establishment of spaced joints along the overlapping portions of the strap., By a series. successive operations.

   The strapping machine, object of the invention, comprises a base designed to rest on the package and supporting a holding device intended, as its name suggests, to hold the parts of the strip so that two strands of this are placed one against the other and overlap and another device (hereinafter called the junction device) designed to give rise during each operation to one or more junctions between the overlapping parts of the strip, this machine being characterized in that the junction device is movable on the base of the machine and along the superimposed parts of the strip, so as to be able to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 be actuated at more than one point in relation to the holding device,

   the base can for this purpose be provided with a guide (integrating or attached) on which or in which the junction device is movably mounted.

   According to its simplest embodiment, the device for holding the strip is designed so as to clamp one against the other of its two strands on one side of the junction device.
As a variant, a part of the strip (for example its lower strand) can be held in a single clamp, while another part of the strip (for example the upper strand) can be held by a tensioner, this clamp and this tensioner being both placed on the same side of the junction device. Or the strap holding device may include a clamp on each side.

   This last construction allows the two superimposed strands of the strip not to undergo, during their joining, the tension which could be applied to them by a tensioner placed on one side and released before the joining is carried out, in particular by cutting. the strip stretched after the retaining clamp placed on the other side has been closed on it.

  All these clamp and tensioner arrangements are moreover well known per se.

   The strip holding device is preferably fixed to the base of the machine or else integral with it, since the operation of the machine does not impose any relative movement between these two elements. Not only can the retaining device thus easily be disassembled into its various elements which are relatively fixed with respect to each other on both sides of the joining device, but the relative and automatic displacement of this joining device in combination. with its actuation is also facilitated as explained below.

   Considered according to this aspect, the invention can be defined as consisting in the substitution, in a strapping machine or a similar machine provided with conventional clamping members (comprising tensioners if necessary) and mounted on a base in the substi - Tution to the ordinary junction device which is relatively fixed a movable junction device along this base in alignment with the flexible strip in order to act in more than one place.

   The machine may include a knife of the type sometimes called a "guillotine" such as is often used in this technique to cut the strip or equivalent link with respect to a tensioner and / or to the power source of the strip (eg. example to an upper strand of this strip). This knife can be movable so as to be able to move with the junction device and is preferably designed to be controlled after the latter by the same actuation system.

   The movement to be performed by the junction device can be ensured in one or more successive predetermined stages, rationally using a ratchet with which the actuation system of the junction device can be forced to cooperate, in order to impose on it the automatic movement just mentioned.

   In the hypothesis of a mobile junction device between defined stations, that is to say stations whose locations relative to the holding device or to the base of the machine are determined in advance, means are provided to allow the actuation system to complete its working stroke and to establish the junction, while the junction device remains at a certain station and to force a movement of this device to another station during the return run of the actuation system.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The ratchet provided for this purpose can be mounted on the base of the machine (assuming that the strap retaining device is fixed relative to it) and can be subjected (in only one direction) to the load of a spring tending to bring it: to a neutral position from which it can be moved by the actuating system in question during its working course to a first station which the junction device is in engagement with the strip and therefore maintained by him. This displacement occurs under such conditions that the ratchet is released purple returned to its neutral position by the spring at the end or before the stroke in question.

   When the actuation system is reversed, it is designed to attack the ratchet in an opposite way without bringing the spring into play, so that when the junction device is released from its engagement with the strap during this return stroke , it is moved from the first station to a second station. Arrived at the latter, the working stroke of the actuating system can, if deemed desirable, be left free to occur without further influence on the ratchet.

   The construction is preferably designed so that to bring back the junction device, it suffices to return this device on itself, the actuation system then being disengaged so as to pass the ratchet without the attack. The junction device can be designed so that it can also be moved successively to come and occupy any one of a desired number of stations.

   It suffices for this to provide the ratchet with a corresponding number of suitably spaced parts capable of being attacked in the same way by the actuation system. '
The invention is described below with reference to the appended schematic drawings which show a machine controlled by hand and enabling various packages or other objects to be strapped with the aid of a relatively thick strip.

   Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the whole of the machine (except that the operating levers of the joining device are supposed to be broken and that the cranks enabling them to be operated are not shown, and that the tensioner lever is drawn in section) the parts of this machine being shown in their normal open positions, and the joining device in the first station it occupies.

   Fig. 2 is a front elevational view corresponding to FIG.

  1 but showing the junction and tension levers all supposedly broken, their cranks not being shown.

   Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are cross-sectional views taken respectively by lines 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 in fig. 2.

   Fig. 6 is a corresponding rear elevational view, the manual control lever of the part serving to engage the lower part of the strip also being shown broken so as not to conceal the parts placed behind it.

   Fig. 7 is a view similar to fig 6 but assuming that the parts of the machine occupy the positions they take when the layering levers placed at the first station reach the end of their working stroke.

   Fig. 8 is a view also similar to FIG. 6 but assuming that the parts of the machine occupy still other positions towards the end of the first return stroke of the levers when the jointing device approaches its second station.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The machine shown comprises a base 1 carrying clamps 2 and 2 placed at the respective ends of the junction zone, each clamp being integral with a lateral projection 1a and; 1b of the base. This is designed so that when the machine is placed so that its base extends longitudinally on one side of the strip, the grippers are in the alignment indicated by S in fig. 1.

   The intermediate part of the base 1 of the machine is provided with aligned longitudinal guide slots 4a and 4b in which the joining device designated as a whole by 5 is mounted by means of bolts 5a, 5b so as to be able to slide while working "cantilever" in the alignment in question inside the bay 1c which forms the junction zone between the two clamps.

   To use the machine thus formed, one begins by introducing the strip into the clamp, which is of the eccentric type, under the control of the lever 2a operated by hand, the free end of the strip entering the junction device 5 to a sufficient depth (towards the clamp) to cover the range of movements of this device. This applies the lower strand of the strip of which the upper strand, which goes around the package to be strapped to return to the supply, is engaged in the clamp 2 by crossing the junction device 5 to arrive at a suitable tensioner. 6 controlled by means of a lever 6a.

   The knife placed between the joining device and the tensioning device is, according to the present construction, associated with the first of these devices and moves with it as described below.

   It is of little importance to the invention as to the exact type of joining which has to be effected, but the known method of joining superimposed strands of strip by making zigzag slits therein between which entanglement then occurs is to be preferred. As this method of junction requires subsequent relative longitudinal movement between the strands of the strip, it is important, when it is used, not to release from the clamps the part of the strip which goes around the package as long as the slots intended for all the junctions were not made because, failing this precaution, the junction or the junctions which are made the first risk being entirely entangled before the other junctions are themselves made.

   It is mainly for this reason that preference should be given to a jointing device construction with holding clamps 2 and 2 provided on both sides.

   The junction device described in Belgian patent N 468,661 filed October 23, 1946 is capable of forming two such junctions each time it is actuated. This device comprises a base 7 supporting two punches 7a and 7b corresponding respectively to the two punching plungers 8a and 8b which are actuated respectively by the pivoting of handles or cranks 9a and 9b around the transverse shafts 10a and 10b, the hubs of these cranks controlling each other in such a way that when they are moved in the opposite direction, the plungers are successively lowered against the overlapping strands of the strip in order to make the junctions there in turn, the plungers being raised by the reverse stroke of the cranks.

   An adjustable stopper 9c is provided on the part forming the crank hub 9a to engage the part forming the hub of the other crank 9b and thereby limit the travel of the cranks. The bottom of the base 7 may be slightly thicker than that of the base 1, in order to facilitate the placement of the junction device on the surface of the package or other object to be strapped.

   In the strapping machine which is shown, the junction device is designed so that it can only be operated at two stations. This device is shown in figs 1 to 7 in the first

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 of these stations and in freeze 8 in the position where it approaches the second station. It is desirable that the two junctions which are produced at each maneuver of the machine be separated by a distance sufficiently large to allow those which are formed respectively at the stations in question to be alternated, that is to say to save the necessary space for one of the subsequent junctions which must be produced between the first two.

   The die 8b of the plunger piston carries a knife 11a on its outer lateral edge closest to the tensioner 6, so as to cooperate with the anvil 11 of the junction device.

  It follows from this arrangement that the device needs to be actuated first of all to be brought to a position close to the tensioner, that is to say to the first of the two aforementioned stations, since it must be moved away from it for the second actuation corresponding to the second station in question. This result can be achieved without the strip being cut a second time since the knife 11a acts only in combination with the anvil 11 on which the strip first extends to the tensioner.

   To control the movement of the joining device in the manner just indicated from the first predetermined station to the second by means of the cranks 9a and 9b of the levers (which constitutes part of their normal actuation) one uses the rack 12 with longitudinal mobility which runs along the intermediate part of the base slidably mounted above the slots 4a and 4b of the consoles 13a and 13b respectively secured to the junction device and the base This rack 12 is biased towards the tension end of the machine by a compression spring 14. A projection 12a directed upwards is provided on the bar 12 to cooperate with a tab 9d forming a stopper provided on the hub of the crank 9b of the lever. .

   When the device is at its first station, the tab 9d engages with this projection 12a during the working stroke of the cranks (as shown in fig 7) which moves the rack 12 despite the resistance opposed by the spring. 14 while the junction punches are held by the strip. The tab 9d lifts away from the protrusion at the end or before the end of this joining stroke, after which the rack 12 can resiliently return to its neutral position.

   During the return stroke of the cranks 9a and 9b, the tab 9d can attack the projection 12a in an opposite way (as shown in Fig. 8) without bringing the spring into play, so that the junction device released from its engagement with the strip is brought by the cranks 9a and 9b to its second station in which a second working stroke can then occur without any other influence on the bar. Since, at the end of the return stroke of the cranks in the second station, the pulp 9d occupies a position of disengagement from the projection 12a, the joining device can be brought back without difficulty to its first station.

   Any desired number of successive stations can be arranged by providing a corresponding number of properly spaced projections 12a on rack 12.

   In the case of the strapping machine which is shown, the plungers of the joining devices ensure the respective junctions of the strands of the strip successively at each station, so that four separate junctions are carried out, at all times, by the two maneuvers, which effectively distributes the required force.

   The details of construction of the machine may be varied, without departing from the invention, in the field of mechanical equivalences.
