<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 est une vue en élévation et coupe de la ma- chine de l'invention, le mécanisme portant la lame coupante étant représenté dans l'ensemble;
1, en regardant dans la direction de la flèche A ;
Fige 3 est une vue en élévation, partiellement en coupe, du mécanisme portant la lame coupante et les organes associés;
Fig. 4 est une vue en élévation de face du mécanis- me portant la lame ooupante, montrant également la méthode employée pour repasser ou meuler la lame;
Fig. 5 est une vue en élévation de l'embouchure par laquelle les feuilles de tabac sont amenées au couteau;
Fig. 6 est une coupe d'une variante de porte-couteau;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

PATENT OF INVENTION IMPROVEMENTS TO TOBACCO CUTTING MACHINES.
The invention relates to tabao cutting machines, and its object is to provide a rotary tobacco cutting machine, in which the cutting blade (or blades) is kept constantly sharp while the machine is in operation, in thus avoiding the loss of time which usually results from stopping the machine for ironing the blades.
Due to the fact that the edge of the blade still has a cutting edge not achieved in previous machines, it is found that it is possible to cut leaves with the tails thereof still attached, without affecting the quality of the material. cut tobacco, because the stems are divided into extremely thin tranohes, which can easily be incorporated into the rest of the cut tobacco.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
A tail, which is inadvertently incorporated into the leaves fed to a conventional tobacco cutting machine, is usually squeezed out of a piece of the "cheese" when the knife reaches that tail, or at least it is broken into larger fragments. or less fat which stains the tabao.
The present invention comprises a rotary tobacco cutting machine, provided with means for automatically ironing or grinding the cutting blade or blades during the rotation of the latter.
The invention further comprises a method of cutting tobacco, in which the leaves and stems, if any, are cut into fibers having substantially the same length, so as to form a substantially homogeneous product, 'L'. The invention will be more specifically described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view in section of the machine of the invention, the mechanism carrying the cutting blade being shown as a whole;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of FIG.
1, looking in the direction of arrow A;
Fig 3 is an elevational view, partially in section, of the mechanism carrying the cutting blade and associated members;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the mechanism carrying the cutting blade, also showing the method used to iron or grind the blade;
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the mouth through which the tobacco leaves are fed to the knife;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of an alternative knife holder;
Fig 7 is a detail of a cutting blade shape.
Referring to the drawings, which show a tobacco cutting machine comprising two blades, the blades 1 are mounted on a rotating member or blade holder 2, in a manner
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
such that they protrude through the internal faoe of the blade holder at an angle as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Each blade is mounted in a slide which compo @ - te, subject to it, a threaded rod 4, mounted in bearings 5 and carrying an eye shaped in the manner of a roller tooth, 6, engaged on the screw between the bearings 5, so that the rotation of the roohet wheel advances the blade in the blade holder so that it protrudes on the posterior side of the latter.
A pawl 7 is provided, brought into oscillation by a lever 8 articulated with a pivot at 8a which, in turn, is driven into oscillation around its pivot, by a rod 9 passing through a hollow shaft 9a on which is mounted. the knife holder 2, the lever 8 is returned by a spring 10, fig, 4. The blade holder rotates so that the cutting blade moves through a mouth or outlet 11, through which is forced tabao tablet.
In the constructive arrangement shown, the tobacco, in the form of leaves, is placed on a belt 12 moving in the direction of the arrow, the belt leading to the bottom of a box or trough formed by the planks 13. A grooved or corrugated roller, of large diameter, 14, is mounted as shown in fig 1, and receives the tobacco leaves from the belt.,
Three small grooved or grooved rollers 15, 16 and 17 are provided, carried in bearings of the lower frame or frame 18 of the machine and arranged so that the portions / of their peripheries lie approximately on a continuous line towards the bottom in direotion of the cutting mouthpiece.
A further grooved or corrugated roll 18a is provided, which opens up to the feeding of the sheets in the space between the roll 14 and the rolls 15, 16 and 17.
The passage for tobacco in the form of a wedge, as shown in fig 1, so that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
leaves are strongly compressed before cutting. The frame or oscillating frame 18, carrying the upper rollers 15, 16 and 17, is conditioned to move around the center of the roller 15, and it is brought down by a weight 19, articulated at 20, in order to compress tobacco, the arrangement allowing the frame or frame to rise when necessary, to lend itself to small irregularities in the feeding of the tabao.
In addition, the frame or frame 18, together with the three rollers, are fixed to a console 21 articulated with a pivot at 22. The console 21 also carries the upper lip 23 of the mouth 11 which is separate from the body of the tube. The mouthpiece so that the weight 19 acts to lower the lip 23, and exerts the necessary pressure on the tobacco at the point of the head, forming it into a compact mass, technically referred to as "cheese". .
Fig. 5 shows the arrangement of the two parts of the mouthpiece and it will also be noted that the upper right corner, which first receives the impact of the cutting blade, is lined with a piece 24 in order to obtain a high degree of compression at this wedge, otherwise the tobacco could be torn off instead of being properly cut,
The member on which the lower lip 25 of the mouthpiece is formed is disposed in the immediate vicinity of the periphery of the grooved or grooved roller 14 (see fig. 1), and forms a reamer to remove all the large fragments of tobacco which may adhere to the corrugated roll.
In Fig. 1 the grooves or splines are shown relatively large, due to the scale of the drawing, but in practice the grooves are about six millimeters and are set at a certain inclination from the drawing. to the axis of the roller 14, so that the roller looks like an ordinary helical gear, except that
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the grooves or grooves are narrow.
When the knife has passed the tobacco outlet opening, and has cut a narrow slice of tobacco, the blade passes over the surface of a molding apparatus established in the form of an emery wheel or grindstone. oonformed into a cup, 26, so that at each revolution of the plate, the blades rub in contact with said grinding wheel and maintain their sharp edge.
The grinding wheel is kept dressed using a diamond 27 carried by an articulated lever with a pivot at 27a, and which is automatically moved in a reciprocating movement, across the face of the grinding wheel by the crank 28, the connecting rod 29 and the lever 30. In order to compensate for the wear of the emery wheel, resulting from the reppssing of the blade, and the dressing of the grinding wheel, the latter is carried in a bearing mounted on a slide 31, automatically advanced by a screw 32 driven in rotation by the gear shown in FIG. 4, and the intermediary of a ratchet wheel 33. The roohet wheel is rotated by a pawl 34 carried by a pivoting lever 35 brought into oscillation by an eccentric 36 powered by a gear 37.
The gear 37, as well as the gear which drives the crank 28, are both actuated by a shaft 38 and the intermediary of helical gears, as shown in FIG. 4, the shaft 38 being connected to the main shaft of the maohine by other gears which have not been represented, a band brake 39 is associated with the roohet wheel 33 to avoid shocks.
The roohet wheel which moves each blade forward can be actuated automatically, as shown in fig. 3, by a cam 40 which activates a lever 41 to which is connected another lever 42 which periodically presses on the rod 9. The speed of advance is modified by a change wheel incorporated in the train of gears which actuate the oame 40 ,
Additionally, provision is preferably made for a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
hand feed positive intended for use when starting the machine for the first time, advancing cutting blades by the desired amount so that they are properly ground before starting the cutting operation .
This manual advancement can be advantageously achieved by fixing a hand lever 43 to the axle carrying the levers 41 and 42, In order to keep the blade rigid, while allowing its advancement, it can be engaged through a support formed in the ooulisseau 3, and which has an oour- or broken passage for the blade. This arrangement is shown in FIG. 6.
The blade is made of a steel plate, and when it is advanced in the curved passage or broken with the aid of the screw, the action exerted by the passage on the straight blade, by bending the latter is sufficient to keep the blade rigid during the cutting operation, while allowing the advancement -necessary. In some cases, the blade can be shaped as shown in FIG. 7, so that the cutting edge is oriented at an angle or inclination with respect to the width of the plate of which the blade is formed, so that a relatively wide cutting blade is obtained by means of a relatively narrow steel strip.
