A method of supplying tobacco to a continuous sheet of cigarette paper, in the manufacture of cigarettes, and apparatus for carrying out this method. The invention includes a method for supplying tobacco to a continuous sheet of cigarette paper, in the manufacture of cigarettes, and an apparatus for performing this method.
According to this process, the tobacco is fed to a first carding cylinder, the excess tobacco entrained by this cylinder while being removed, and is then detached from this cylinder to be distributed on a second carding cylinder with controlled movement, of where it is removed to fall onto the continuous sheet of cigarette paper.
This method can be carried out, for example, using an apparatus of which the accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment.
Fig. 1 is an overall elevation taken from one side of the apparatus with its control mechanism; Fig. 2 is an elevation on the other side; Fig. 3 is a schematic sectional view of a tobacco receiving hopper, without an operating mechanism; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detailed views; Fig. 7 is a schematic view showing a variant of means for moving the rear part of the hopper.
As shown, the hopper comprises end frames 1, 2 assembled by spacers 3, side pieces 4 which can be made of wood, a back plate 5 and various drums and cylinders mounted between the end frames. The drums and cylinders form the front wall of the hopper and the tobacco to be treated is placed between the back plate 5 and the drums and cylinders.
Reference will first be made to FIG. 3, in which the various drums and cylinders are shown schematically. The advancement of the tobacco is effected by an advancing cylinder 6 arranged, to rotate in the direction of the arrow A, towards a card cylinder 7 which in turn drives the tobacco upwards, below it. another carding cylinder 8. The cylinder 6 is preferably a solid cylinder of metal or wood, and the carding material mounted on the cylinder 8 is finer in texture than that provided on the cylinder 7.
A detacher 9 is provided to rest on the advancement cylinder 6 in order to prevent tobacco from coming out between the cylinders 6 and 7.
The carding cylinder 8 acts as a brush cylinder, its rotation being such that it brushes back the excess tobacco fed by the carding cylinder 7, thus regulating the amount of tobacco passing. A comb shown in detail in FIGS. 4 and 5 retain; the tobacco which has come out, between the cylinders 7, 8, on the surface of the cylinder 7. Shortly after, the tobacco is removed from this cylinder by a picking or take-up cylinder 11 and falls down on the surface peripheral of another cylinder 12, provided with a card lining, this cylinder being mounted near the unloading opening of the. hopper. The cylinder 12 rotates at a somewhat slower speed than the first card cylinder 7.
A small cylinder 13, preferably full key, applies the tobacco to cylinder 12 and a comb 14 mounted below cylinder 13 second this operation. The teeth of this comb are preferably elastic, so that the comb exerts uniform pressure over the entire length of the cylinder 12.
A small pickup or brush cylinder 15 removes the tobacco from the cylinder 12 and the tobacco falls into a funnel 16 before a narrow opening 17, below which passes the strip of paper supplied by the cigarette maker. To facilitate the passage of your bac. through the orifice 17, the side walls of the funnel 16 can be vibrated, as shown in fig. 2 for example. In this arrangement, pegs 81 are fixed to one face of a rotating chain wheel 49 and during the rotation of this wheel these pegs come into engagement with a lever 82 biased by a spring 85.
The lever 82 is mounted on one end of an oscillating shaft 83 supported in the frame of the hopper and carrying at the other end a finger 81 which vibrates the funnel 1 (i when the spring 85 returns the lever 82.
Above the cylinder 8 is mounted a shaft 18 carrying two tabs of leather 19 or a similar material, intended to bring back all the tobacco adhering to the carding cylinder and to return it to the mass in the. hopper.
The means for actuating the advancement cylinder 6, the cylinder 7, the cylinders II, 15 and the shaft 18 are shown in fig. 1.
A pulley 2 (1 mounted on the corresponding end frame of the hopper, is actuated with the aid of a belt 21 by a suitable source of energy and drives the shaft 22 on which it is mounted. via a ratchet clutch 22. By virtue of this arrangement, the remainder of the apparatus, of which the hopper is a part, can be rotated backwards without moving the cylinders of the hopper.
The belt 21 is kept tensioned by a tensioning roller 23 and a spring 24, the tension of the latter being able to be adjusted by a hand lever 25 which can be locked at 25a.
The shaft 22 transmits the command by a toothed wheel 26 mounted on it to a toothed wheel 27 fixed to a wheel 28 actuating a wheel 29. The wheels: 28, 29 are removable and form (the wheels (the change of speed to be able to vary the running speed of rollers 6, 7 and, 12 with respect to that of rollers 11 and 15 and to that of the machine to make the cigarettes. On the shaft .53 of the wheel? 9 is fixed a pinion 30 which co-ordinates the rotational movement to a toothed wheel 31, the shaft of the latter bearing a toothed wheel 32 and a chain wheel 33.
The shaft of the cylinder 7 carries a toothed wheel 32z controlled by the. wheel 32 and a chain 34 connects it. wheel to. chain 33 to, a chain wheel 35 mounted on the shaft of the solid cylinder 13.
The collecting cylinders 11 and 15 are actuated by a pulley 36 secured to. the louse 20, by means of a belt 37 and pulleys 38, 39 respectively mounted on the shafts of the cylinders. An adjustable tension roller 40 serves to adjust the tension of the belt 37, as shown.
On the pulley 38 is mounted a pulley 41 which actuates the shaft 18 carrying the leather legs 19 by means of a belt 43 and a pulley 44.
Some of the smaller cylinders are adjustable; thus, for example, cylinder 11 is supported in adjusting segment yokes 45, which are pivoted into 46 capable of being locked in position by screws 47, and the other cylinders may be mounted in a similar manner. The control mechanism for the other cylinders and drums is shown in fig. 2.
A chain wheel 48 mounted on the drum 7, which is actuated by a gear as already described, is connected to the wheels. chain 49, 50 mounted on drums 12 and 6, via a chain 51, a chain tensioner 52 being provided.
The shaft 53 (fig. 1), on which the toothed wheels 29, 30 are mounted, passes through the end frame 2 and carries a crank button 54. A connecting rod 55 is stained on the crank button 54 is articulated by its other end to an oscillating lever 56 carrying a pawl 57. This pawl is engaged with a ratchet wheel 58 fixed -on the shaft of the upper drum 8 so that the latter is driven by a intermittent rotational movement, the drum being stopped against any retrograde movement by a stop cli that 59, as shown.
The back plate 5 of the hopper can be moved to press the tobacco continuously in contact with the advancing cylinder by the following means: The back plate 5, which is preferably of wood, is supported by metal supports 60 attached to it. a shaft 61 rotatably mounted in bearings 62. On one end of the shaft 61 is mounted a segment 63 having ratchet teeth, and a pawl 64 actuated by the shaft of the drum 7, is mounted. engaged with the teeth of segment 63 and gradually raises the back plate 5 to its upright position. A stop pawl 65 is provided for this toothed segment.
The pawl 64 is pivoted on an arm 68 pivoted at 69 and connected by a connecting rod 67 to a crank knob 66 provided on the shaft of the drum 7. The pawl 64 is shown pivoted approximately in the middle of the arm 68, but this position can be changed to chan-. manage progress measurement.
The combs 10, 14 are mounted in bearings 70 provided in the frames and are provided on one end with levers 71. Springs 72 are connected to the levers 71 to keep the combs in contact with the card drums. The upper card drum 8 is mounted in adjustable bearings to allow the space through which the tobacco passes to be varied, and a band brake 73 is also provided to prevent the mechanism from racing. Drum 8 could be brought to. rotate continuously if desired.
In fig. 7 shows another method for moving the rear plate 5 of the hopper. The back plate 5 is hinged at 74 and an arm 75 to which a rocker mechanism can impart a slow rotational motion presses the plate forward as described above. In addition, an oscillating movement is imparted to the rear plate 5 of the hopper by means of a rack 76, one end of which is connected to a crank button 78 of the crank 79, the teeth of the crank mesh being engaged. with a bar 77, provided on the rear plate 5 of the hopper. The crank 79 is mounted on a shaft 80 actuated by any suitable part of the mechanism.
A weight 81a connected to a passing rope, on a pulley 82a maintains the bar 77 pressed against the arm 75, in engagement with the teeth of the rack 76. During the rotation of the shaft 80, the rack 76 moves in back and forth and together with the weight 81a produce the oscillating movement of the back plate of the hopper. Each time the ratchet mechanism moves the back plate 5 inward, the bar 77 moves forward one tooth of the rack 76 and continues to oscillate.
As can easily be seen from the drawing, the gathering roller 11 has a peripheral speed much greater than that of the carding rolls 7 and 12. As a result, it removes the tobacco from the roll 7 by stretching and opening the parts which are retained by the comb 10, applied elastically to this cylinder. On the other hand, falling tobacco. on the cylinder 12, which rotates relatively slowly, is arranged thereon in layers which are superimposed to be then clamped together by the roller 13. This arrangement ensures a great regularity of distribution of the tobacco on this cylinder 12.
The cooperation of the pick-up roller 15 with the 1: 1 comb ensures a very efficient new carding of the tobacco. Thanks to the measures taken, the use of transport tapes for tobacco is eliminated, which constitutes a considerable advantage.
