Dispositif d'attelage
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Au dessin annexée représentant l'invention: la figure 1 est une élévation latérale de l'objet de l'invention; la figure 2 en est une vue en plan par dessus; la figure 3 est une vue en bout de face; la figure 4 est une coupe suivant la ligne 4-4 de la figure 3; la figure 5 est une coupe suivant la ligne 5-5 de la figure 1; la figure 6 est une coupe suivant la ligne 6-6 de la figure 2; la figure 7 est une coupe suivant la ligne 7-7 de la figure 1: la figure 8 est une vue latérale d'une remorque pourvue des moyens d'attelage suivant l'invention; la figure 9 est une vue d'un attelage à compensation par ressort;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Coupling device
The present invention relates generally to improvements to the coupling devices of the type used for trailers or similar vehicles, either isolated or in line forming a train and more particularly to a coupling device comprising the necessary play for allowing the tractor to turn completely with respect to the trailer hitched to it and a device which has attachment means in alignment with the traction line in the formation of a train and front and rear means and at - below the front and rear traction line in the maneuver where only one trailer is hitched to a tractor.
It is well known in the present art to employ several coupling devices in connection with a drawbar or the like. Already in 1885 a boom was used with coupling devices at different heights as shown in US patent 314,443 to Forbes. In 1914 Dubois used coupling devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
variable height as seen in his US patent 1,493,970 and in 1919 Ten Broeck uses in his US patent 1,318,819 a height variable hitch in a tractor hitch.
It is also known to use front and rear coupling devices in line with the traction line and devices above and below the front and rear traction line as shown in Skonnard patent 1,423,164 and in 1918 Potts patent 1,255,222 in which front and rear coupling devices are described in line with the traction line and a device (a hook) below the traction line. It is also known to bend a drawbar or hitch upward to give play so as to allow the lead car or tractor to turn properly as seen in Pescatore Patents 1,084,820, Townsend 1,377,609 and Deming 1,466,274.
The invention relates to an improvement to all these devices and the main new features of the construction as well as its advantages can be defined as follows:
In the first place an arched and reinforced cast iron part is used in one piece which not only has a high degree of resistance to lateral and axial loads, but which, when used as a drawbar, has sufficient play to allow to turn the tractor completely allowing at the same time the play of the wheels and tractor components independently of their inclination or of the oscillation of the towed vehicle.
Secondly, a coupling device or frame integral with the drawbar is used to secure this bar to the front bar of the frame or chassis of the trailer, thereby eliminating weak points.
Thirdly one employs, in connection with and making
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
body with the jib at the front a coupling rod or the like so that there is no possibility of slackening between the jib and the bar, in other words all the different elements of the device couplings are part of a single cast iron part.
Fourth, the hitch arm or link rod is tilted instead of being strictly vertical, so that when the front of a trailer rises the rear part (crossing a ditch for example) of the lead vehicle or tractor will not strike the vertical rear part or the connecting member.
Fifth, the transverse construction of the cast iron part is in the shape of a hollow rectangle or box, this in conjunction with the design of the single part gives the material used the greatest rigidity and strength.
Sixthly the lower part of the drawbar is completely arched and has a desired curvature so that there are no angular parts to reach the parts of a tractor, especially when it is turning or passing over uneven ground. .
The present invention further provides a single rear drawbar having a central drawbar.
The construction of this bar is box-shaped and the pull point is in a direct line and parallel to the line of force on the main frame and almost in the center of that frame. Practically for this purpose we have a point of attachment a little lower than the frame, but this gives a tendency to twist in the case of hard traction. The invention overcomes this drawback and the entire construction of the rear hitch is greatly improved and made more durable, reducing the risks.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bending and also those of torsion.
It has been found practically that when a tractor turns or backs up in an unfavorable location, the force exerted by the trailer preferably breaks the bolts and jaws of the drawbar. The present device remedies these defects; it is advantageous in all cases and gives more play so that the tractor can turn at an acute angle, which makes it possible to maneuver a tractor and a trailer hitched together in a very narrow passage.
Other equally important objects and advantages of the invention will result from the detailed construction described below, but what has been explained above tends to indicate the main novelty features on which it is necessary. there is reason to insist.
In the accompanying drawing showing the invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the object of the invention; Figure 2 is a top plan view; FIG. 3 is a front end view; Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Figure 2; FIG. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7 of FIG. 1: FIG. 8 is a side view of a trailer provided with the coupling means according to the invention; Figure 9 is a view of a spring compensation hitch;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Fig. 10 shows a tractor and a trailer reached together with the tractor located substantially at right angles to the trailer.
This view also shows the position of the pull line and how the arched arrow provides the necessary play; Figure 11 is a section through the rear coupling device; Figure 12 is a sectional view of the spring compensation hitch.
In the drawings, in which the same reference signs designate analogous or similar parts in all the figures, 1 denotes a schematic view of the rear end of a tractor placed at the head; 2 is the trailer following the tractor; Vehicles are not part of the invention, but are shown to show the general application of the invention in Figure 10.
The device of the invention is intended to be carried by the trailer car 2, that is to say to be attached to the front end 3 of a trailer, and the coupling device of the trailer. The invention is generally designated by the reference sign 4, the upper attachment point 5 being in alignment with the front and rear traction axis of a train, the lower attachment point 6 being. intended for coupling a single trailer to a tractor.
The invention comprises a single piece of cast iron in one piece forming the assembly head, the boom and the hitch arm of a coupling apparatus. The boom 7 has an upwardly directed arcuate curvature which, particularly on the underside 8, rises from the assembly head 9 and then continues downward to gradually connect with the arm of the boom. fastener 10; the rear edge or face 11 of the attachment arm is tilted forward
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and downward as indicated at 12, the curve from the arcuate arrow to the inclined face being uninterrupted.
As shown in Figure 5, the one-piece cast iron piece of the invention is in the form of a boot having four walls 13 directed parallel and a hollow central portion. In Figure 4 is shown an opening 14 for the drawbar and this opening has scalloped walls 15 serving as a shoulder for the drawbar thereby forming a seat. This construction is particularly stiff and strong, and gives maximum resistance to both longitudinal and lateral deformation, and this construction will not break or break.
The assembly head 9 is integral with the arrow 7, and it simply constitutes in reality the supporting part of the arrow, two pairs of spaced side ears 17 being provided to receive the bolts intended to attach the arrow on the top. of the front bar (not shown) of the trailer frame or on top of the front cross bar of the frame. A reinforcing flange 18 directed downwards serves to effect the attachment by means of bolts or the like on the front face of said front bar of the frame. it has been found that this construction of the assembly head gives the maximum resistance to traction, fatigue and the like and that this construction is very simple. Thanks to this assembly head, the boom can be attached to any vehicle of conventional construction.
The ears 17 are reinforced at 19. The boom, assembly head and link arm are designed with a core.
The attachment arm 10 is also constructed in the or / way of a boot, and its edge / inner face 11 is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
tilted forward and down as described above. At the lower end of the hitch arm there is an opening for receiving a lower pulling jaw. The opening for the lower hitching jaw is designated at 20 and is intended to be used when trailer is hitched to a tractor, not to another trailer. other attachment points can be provided.
The opening 21 for the upper attachment is in immediate alignment with the normal axis of traction of the trailers, when they are part of a train, that is to say with the axis of traction of the points. anterior and posterior attachment points.
Referring now to Figures 9, la, 11 and 12, it is noted that the rear attachment device 22 is constructed in the form of a box. The jaws 23 are traversed by an opening 24 intended to receive the coupling bolt 25. The jaws are integral with a substantially cylindrical shank 26 which is perforated to receive the bolt 27 which engages against the. rear frame 28, in order to give the jaws 23 an articulation effect.
Frame 28 is countersunk at 29 to form a substantially conical swelling shoulder seat at the front end of shank 26, and a lug is cast above and below the opening for the shank. drawbar to prevent the jaw 23 from rotating on the casting 22, The spring-compensated hitch 31, which is shown in figure 12 in its adaptation in the opening 20 of the fastening jaw lower, contemplates the use of a steel jaw 32 for the drawbar and through which the bolt 33 passes. The jaw of the drawbar rests on the countersunk walls 36 which form a shoulder. Bolt 33 carries thrust washers
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
34, between which the spring 35 is held.
The bolt 33 and the jaw 32 for the drawbar form an articulated connection. The load is absorbed by the spring 35, and the lateral thrusts, as well as the effect of torsion which one necessarily encounters when pulling a cart from a tractor, is compensated, and the possibility of displacement is to a great extent eliminated. breakage of drawbar jaws and bolts.
In FIG. 10, the position of the tractor is shown substantially at right angles to the position of the following trailer, and it is noted that the arched construction of the lower face 8 of the boom provides the desired clearance at the bottom. above protruding parts.
The operation and the main advantages of the one-piece coupling device according to the invention appear to emerge from the foregoing description, but the use of the fully arched boom should be emphasized. - made rigid with its stop end forming the assembly head, as well as on the inner curvature of the arrow executed in a variable manner depending on the connection of the face of the attachment arm. In practice, it has been found that this construction is practical and efficient and that it is desirable from all points of view and much more recommendable than other similar apparatuses presently on the market.
It is obvious that changes in form and construction can be made to the apparatus described above without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention.
