Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    @ purifies and regenerates used lubricating oils.

   It is known that lubricating oils, in particular those used for the lubrication of fast running combustion engines, undergo, in use, a gradual change in their lubricating quality. The causes of this phenomenon are, in essence, the following:
Mixing with small particles from contact with fuel or from decomposition of the original lubricating oils results in a simultaneous decrease in viscosity and flash point.

   The formation of substances containing carbon and tar and resembling asphalt, as well as unsaturated compounds having a tendency to polymerization and thus changing the homogeneity and the degree of fluidity of the lubricant, has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the effect is that the oil gradually takes on the characteristic odor and dark coloration of exhaust gas oils or "burnt" oils.

   For this reason, the oil circulating in the machine must be replaced completely or in part with fresh, unused oil after a relatively short period of time.

   In order to reduce the costs which this causes, it has been proposed to regenerate these waste oils in order to make them fit for use again, possibly in combination with fresh oils. some of these known methods consist in subjecting the oils to physical treatment, for example filtering, centrifugation, distillation. However, these methods have not become particularly widespread, because of their insufficient efficiency or their complicated implementation.

   Other processes of a chemical nature consist in treating the oils by heating in the presence of polymerization agents, such as sulfuric acid, zinc chloride, tin protochloride, aluminum chloride, phosphoric acid. etc., which exert a condensing and precipitating effect on the impurities of the nature of asphalt or tar, which can then be isolated by filtering.

   In these known processes, the separation takes place, in general, by heating in the presence of polymerizing agents, while the isolation of the volatile fractions contained in the oil takes place by distillation. The use of polymerization agents such as the metal chlorides mentioned above requires, in all cases, special treatment, since these agents have, apart from their property of polymerizing harmful elements, the effect of decomposing the dense oils by changing their lubricating properties. It is for this reason that aluminum chloride has heretofore been used for this purpose only to a limited extent.

   Precise experiments carried out under various conditions

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 concerning the action of aluminum chloride have shown that it is possible, with a suitable use of this agent, to combine in a single phase, on the one hand, the separation of the volatile fractions by distillation and, d on the other hand, the precipitation, by polymerization and condensation, of the parts containing asphalt and tar which constitute the impurities of the waste oils.

   The present invention relates to a process for the purification and regeneration of used lubricating oils, the charac- teristic of which consists in that the oil previously freed of its water is, in the presence of solid aluminum chloride free of water. water, brought to a temperature between 1300 and 3500 C. in a distillation apparatus provided with a stirrer. The temperature and the duration of the treatment are regulated so as to obtain simultaneously the separation and the recovery of the volatile fractions with low flashpoint by vaporization, and the precipitation of the parts containing asphalt and tar. which impure the oil itself and change the lubricating quality.

   The oil thus treated is then immediately subjected to filtering, optionally after treatment with adsorbent agents (smectic clay, bleaching agents with a carbon content, etc.). The distillation can also be separated from the treatment with aluminum chloride. which may be of particular benefit in a few cases.

   By the process according to the invention, the following considerable advantages are obtained over the known processes:
The apparatus is simple and the purification process is shortened.

   The new process can, while ensuring high production and the best results, be used for oils of various kinds, in particular also for vegetable oils and fats. The method according to the invention can be modified to a large extent, in order to change, in large

 limits, viscosity and other properties of regenerated oils. The essential qualities of the oils thus obtained can be so improved that in some cases the qualities of the original oils can be surpassed.
