 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Process for drawing magnesium and its alloys.

   The present invention relates to the drawing of magnesium and its alloys.

   Heretofore, it was not considered possible to stretch magnesium into a thin wire and therefore the process heretofore used to prepare magnesium wires or tapes has been to spin or press liquid magnesium under high pressure through it. an opening, while heating the block in which this opening is made. However, this process involves great technical difficulties, if it is a question of obtaining very thin wires. On the other hand, it is known to manufacture magnesium sheet which is very thin in one dimension by a rolling process.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Relatively low melting stretch metals are drawn at room temperature and with large differences in the diameter of the die passage openings. Thus, for example, aluminum which has a melting point of 658 C or copper whose melting point is 1080 C can be drawn at room temperature with a decrease in diameter of 15% or more.

   Refractory metals, such as tungsten (melting point 33000C) or molybdenum (melting point 2600 C) are drawn into very thin wires at a temperature significantly higher than ambient, for example at 800 C and with a small decrease of 8% at most per sector.

   Of the aforementioned metals aluminum most closely resembles magnesium in this regard, since the two metals not only have substantially the same melting point, but also the same tensile strength. However, although aluminum can be drawn down to 40 microns and is therefore among the easily stretchable metals, magnesium could heretofore only be spun in wires or strips not much thinner than 500 microns. From a technical point of view, drawing is preferred over spinning through a narrow opening.

   It has been found, according to the invention, that magnesium, although it is a low melting point metal, can be drawn according to methods which are used precisely for high melting point metals.

   According to the invention, the magnesium is stretched through dies of which the passage circumference decreases in a relatively small proportion, preferably by 6% at most per die, and the deformation zone is further heated to a temperature of between 250 and 400 C, of,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 preferably 350.

   The decrease in the circumference of passagi dies is preferably between 2 and 5% per yarn
The invention embraces not only magnesia but also magnesium alloys having a sufficiently high magnesium proportion that they cannot be drawn without resorting to the invention and in this description the term "magnesium" should be taken in a very meaning which may also include alloys of said kind.

   According to one embodiment of the invention., @ Can heat the deformation zone by heating the threads Starting, for example, with a melted or spun magnesium rod with a diameter of 6 mm., It is possible to first reduce it, for example by hammering, to a smaller diameter, for example 1 mm., and then stretching can be carried out. The hammering is carried out, preferably, by reducing the circumference of the rod by at most 3% by marte operation: It is possible, however, even without prior marte operation] to proceed directly to the stretching from the initial diameter of 6 mm.

   By hammering is meant the hammering operation which is used for example to manufacture tungsten wire, inter alia for incandescent electric lamps, this. The appropriate apparatus for this hammering and this stage is described and represented on pages 68 to 75 of the work by N.L. MUller "Die Fabrikation und Eigenschaften der Metalldrahtlampen (1914)".

   According to the invention, good results are obtained by first hammering, for example, the magnesium rods in question at a temperature above 250 ° C., preferably at 400 ° C., so as to reduce the diameter. at 3 mm., the @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 diameter being reduced by 40 microns with each hammering operation. Then, the diameter is reduced by 3 mm. to 2 mm., the diameter decreasing by 20 microns by hammering operation and the diameter is then reduced by 2 mm. to 1 mm., the diameter being reduced by 10 microns by hammering operation. Once the diameter of 1 mm. Is reached, stretching is carried out.

  During stretching, the deformation zone is heated to a temperature of about 350 ° C., which can be easily accomplished by heating the die. It is advantageous to preheat the magnesium wire to a temperature above 300 ° C., preferably 450 ° C., as long as the wire is still more than about 300 microns thick and before it reaches. the drawing opening of the die The drawing can be carried out in the following manner.

   We arrange for that of 1 mm. at about 600 microns, the decrease in the diameter of the wire per die is 35 microns. Then, the diameter is reduced from 600 to 400 microns, the decrease in diameter being 20 microns per die.

  During the subsequent stretching which takes place so that the diameter is reduced from 400 microns to 200 microns, the decrease by Tilière is 12 microns and then the diameter can be reduced from 200 microns to 100 microns, the decrease being 10 to 1 micron per die.

   The dies can be diamonds or dies made, for example, of what is called Widia metal.

  Preferably, a pulling speed is used which for diameters less than 600 microns is approximately 10 meters per minute. The lubricant used during stretching may be shuttle oil.

   As a result of stretching, there is an increase in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tion of the tenacity, the value of which is, in most cases, greater than that of a wire of identical diameter obtained by spinning. Thus, for example, one can easily achieve a toughness of 25 to 30 kg per mm2.

   The magnesium drawn according to the invention exhibits stretching streaks on its surface and a metallographic examination has revealed that it has a structure of crystals smaller than a magnesium wire obtained by spinning.

   The invention further enables the thin and narrow strip magnesium to be stretched having a periphery of less than 1500 microns. This thin and narrow strip can be obtained both by a judicious choice of the shape of the passage section of the last dies and by stretching or rolling a round wire drawn according to the process of the invention.
