de construction appliquée au guidon des bicyclettes, comm la représentent les figues 1 à 5, on a prévu sur le tube direction a, de préférence à ou près de l'extrémité super de ce tube, un renflement ou garniture b rendue solidaire reliée au tube de direction a et prolongée vers l'arrière manière à former, à son extrémité libre, un prolongement disposé transversalement présentant des faces opposées ve cales b2 disposées symétriquement de part et d'autre du o, de la bicyclette, le prolongement transversal b1 comporta des trous concentriques ou une ouverture concentrique sur faces opposées verticales b2,destines à recevoir des axe pivots e, dont les extrémités extérieures sont de préfère filetées pour pénétrer dans des filetages correspondants ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

on road shocks, the tension, compression or torsion of the coil parts of the spring, thus imposing a gradually increasing resistance to this movement.
According to the invention, there are also provided means making it possible to increase or reduce the tension, the compression or the torsion of the spring, so as to oppose a more or less strong resistance to the relative movement of the part suspended from the frame, under the effect of vibrations or shocks from the road.
The invention further comprises the construction features described in the following.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying schematic drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one form of construction of the spring mount applied to the handlebars of a bicycle.
. Figure 2 is a partial plan view, corresponding to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detailed plan view, partially in section.
Figure 4 is a detailed elevation taken from the left of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a vertical cross section through the frame shown in Figure 4.

In carrying out the invention, according to a form
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of construction applied to the handlebars of bicycles, as shown in figs 1 to 5, there is provided on the steering tube a, preferably at or near the super end of this tube, a bulge or trim b made integral with the tube direction a and extended towards the rear so as to form, at its free end, an extension arranged transversely having opposite faces ve wedges b2 arranged symmetrically on either side of the o, of the bicycle, the transverse extension b1 has concentric holes or a concentric opening on opposite vertical faces b2, intended to receive the pivot pins e, the outer ends of which are preferably threaded to penetrate corresponding threads;
seen in the hole or holes of the transverse extension b1, t that, near the respective heads of the threaded pivots e, extensions e1 are provided to receive the edge ends c1 of a fork formed by the arm or arms of a boy c used to carry the arms of the handlebars! in the retractable position in front of the steering tube a, the handlebars hanging from the transverse extension b1 of the extension or d trim mounted on the steering tube a. The transverse extension b1 is advantageously provided with recesses that are roughly concentric with the respective vertical faces, intended to serve as a seat for the extensions provided under the heads of the pivot axes e.
The gasket used to carry the handlebar d comprises an end, a socket or clamping jaws c2 allowing the gasket 0 to grip the handlebars d in its center. At its other end, the lining o widens v the extension or the lining b, so that the bra forming the fork c1 pass on either side of the steering tube a. The filling o is also provided with b
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shorter c3 directed downwards from the pivot pins of the lining c, so as to come closely alongside the steering tube a, on either side of the latter and to form, with the body of the trim c, the equivalent of angled levers.
In the normal position of the trim c, the main arms or the body going to the socket or the clamping jaws c2 carrying the handlebar d, is tilted upwards at a slight angle to the horizontal, in the direction of the sleeve or clamping jaws c2 so that the handlebar d is mounted at a height slightly above the head of the steering tube d, in the position in which the extension or trim b is mounted .
At the ends of the arms c3 directed downwards, it has been fixed in a pivotable manner, by means of screws f1 or analogues, the corresponding arms of a frame or bracket in the form of an arc f, the transverse or connection part of this frame being pierced for the passage of a central rod ± passing between said arms of the frame f and parallel to these arms, the rod (being threaded to enter a corresponding hole threaded internally, provided in said transverse part of the frame f, a-nut locking g1 or an equivalent member being provided screwed onto the rod g, against the outer surface of said transverse part, the purpose of this nut being described below.
In a position vis-à-vis the central rod g, the front face of the steering tube a is provided with an extension or a circular projection a1 so as to form a raised base serving as a seat for a spring helical h, the size of which is for example 5mm. or more or less, disposed between and sensiblemenparallel to the arms of the frame f in the form of an arc, this spring resting, at its upper end, against a disc g in the form of a cup, in the center of which passes the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
central rod, the disc g2 being, in turn, pressed the effect of the spring against a nut or an analog stop screwed on the rod.
The means provided for adjusting the degree of inclination (arm of the trim e forming the bent levers, and pa @ of the pressure of the spring h, comprises a metal plate i <curve i with four sides, comprising, at the place mili <of the shorter sides, of the parts it projecting laterally, the plate i being curved at the radius of the transverse extension b1 of the extension or of the lining b provided or mounted on the steering tube a, on which the plate 1.
The laterally its parts. your il of the metal plate i protrude beyond the b curves of the transverse extension b1, said parts housed between the ends of the arc-shaped hollows c4, formed in the edges of the pivoting parts of the trim arms e carrying, pivotally , the handlebars d, hollow c4 being arranged, for this purpose, on either side of the transverse extension b1 of the extension or of the guard b. The recesses c4 are provided of a sufficient length relative to the width of the protrusions il, to bring the adjustment of the parts il, as well as to allow the desired freedom of movement of the lining c.
The metal p i is pierced with grooves at i2, the grooves dant in a direction transverse to the tudinal axis of the transverse extension b1. Threaded zero points, are provided to pass through the grooves i2 and to penetrate into corresponding threaded holes made in the transverse extension b1, washers or the like being provided between the surface of the extension or lining and the lower surface of the axes .. i3, so that by tightening the pins, the plate i can be held in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
fixed position on the extension or the trim b-.
To adjust the tension in the spring h, we first loosen the pins i3 and move the metal plate i so as to make the protruding parts i1 press laterally against the upper edges of the ends of the recesses c4 of the parts. pivoting of the packing while the latter is depressed so as to compress the spring h. The pins i3 are then tightened so as to keep them in the position thus adjusted, after which the lining c can be released.
In operation, when the bicycle is passed over a cavity or depression in the road surface, the handlebars perform a relative downward movement, producing the compression of the coil spring, this spring thus opposing said movement to a progressively increasing resistance and at the same time absorbing shock.
In a modified construction, as shown in figure 6, the central rod g is replaced by a threaded rod mounted in the extension a1 of the steering tube a and carrying, at its free end, a bracket in the form of a yoke k whose outer part k1 has the shape of a semicircular guide member, a single helical spring 1 being carried on the guide member kl and being anchored, by its ends, to the ends of the arms c3 directed downwards, the trim o placed next to the steering tube a.
The guide member k1 of the mount k can, as shown, be mounted on the rod 1 by means of a threaded bore, so that its position on the rod can be varied according to the force of the spring used, or depending on the desired spring tension, this position being determined by means of locking nuts.
In another modified construction, shown in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
figure 7, two coil springs m can take place of the frame arms! in the form of an arc, of the construct shown in Figures 1 to 5, the transvere part of said frame having the shape of a liner n1 at the ends of which are attached the helical springs, the ture n1 being mounted on or being integral with 'a trale rod n fixed on the front faoe of the steering tube in the manner of the rod j, that is to say on the projection a1 of the steering a.
In FIG. 8 a modified construction of the means for fixing the lining o to the extension b1 has been shown, which the pivot pins e (FIG. 2) are replaced with the axis e2 passing through the transverse extension b. Mounted on said axis, there are two sleeves e3 a in the shallow hollows b3 made in the faoes v cales' of the extension b1. The axis is held in pos by the eorou e4, which can be used together with a blocking or with other appropriate means to ensure the fixity of its position.
