<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

La fig. 1 montre la commande hydraulique et le dispositif inverseur pour le piston aotionnant le coulisseau, ainsi que la commande de l'avance de la table également reliée à ce dispositif;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Il va de soi que l'invention n'est aucunement limitée aux raboteuses rapides, et qu'elle s'applique tout aussi bien à d'autres machines-outil dans lesquelles soit l'outil, soit la pièce à usiner, effectue un mouvement alternatif;

High-speed planer with hydraulic control.
The object of the present invention is a hydraulically controlled rapid planer, in which a compressed fluid acts on the piston arranged in a working cylinder and comprising a piston rod on only one of its faces.
The invention is essentially characterized by the combination of a variable flow pump with a control device for the stepped supply of the piston, so that for lower speeds, that is to say during roughing passes, the small face of the piston is pressurized during the feed, and the large faoe of the piston during the return, while for higher machining speeds, i.e. during the finishing passes, both piston faces are subjected to pressure during advance and the small face only during return.
It thus becomes possible to drive the planer both for the roughing passes and for the finishing passes at regularly variable machining speeds with a relatively small pump.
Until now, we had to use for oha-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
one of these two operations a rapid planer with different pumps. The combination object of the invention therefore makes it possible, while retaining a relatively small pump leading to a compact construction, to considerably extend the possibilities of use and adjustment of the planer.
The distribution device interposed between the pump and the working piston, and of which the reversing member is actuated by a special auxiliary pump, is arranged so that a reversing valve, operated by hand, makes it possible to pass directly from the work. from roughing to finishing work, and also to ensure immediate shutdown regardless of the machining speed used.
Moreover, and in order to achieve, whatever the working position, the return to the maximum possible and constant speed, the reversing member is connected to the feed pump by means of coupling members which, when the reversing member is brought to its position corresponding to the return, themselves bring the pump to its maximum flow.
Finally, the provision of a dead space in the coupling members arranged between the pump and the reversing member ensures a reversal movement. The displacement of the reversing member is effected by means of an auxiliary pump whose pressurized oil is used after the reversal for pressure lubrication. The reversing member is also connected directly to a shaft ensuring the advance of the table and, when uncoupled, uniform drive of the table.
The planer is essentially constituted by a base forming at the same time an oil container, by a slide movable on a support and driven by a motor cylinder located below, by an oil compressor.

with reversing valve with its pipes, and by a table carrying the workpiece and provided with a feed mechanism.
The accompanying drawings only show these members. essential parts to facilitate understanding of the arrangement and operation of the device which is the subject of the invention, of which they represent sohematically and by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment:
Fig. 1 shows the hydraulic control and the reversing device for the piston actuating the slide, as well as the control of the advance of the table also connected to this device;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II of FIG. 1 and
Figs. 3 to 6 are sections along the axis III-III of FIG. 1 of the reversing valve for different positions of the control unit.
The planer is controlled for example by means of an electric motor 1 driving a hydraulic transmission 2, the housing 3 of which is movable. When the housing occupies the horizontal position of FIG. 1, -the flow is zero. By rotating the housing upwards to the position shown in dotted lines, the flow rate can be increased to a maximum value. The oil is drawn from the reservoir 4 by means of a suction pipe 5, and sent from the compression side of the hydraulic transmission through a pipe 6 to an inverter member 7, from where it arrives by means of pipes 8 or 9 in the engine cylinder 10. In this cylinder slides a piston 11 provided with a piston rod on only one of its faces, and which is made integral with the slide of the planer in any suitable and known manner.
During the advance of the ooulisseau, it is the whole of the anterior face lla of the piston which acts, while during the return, the surface
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
aotive is formed by the annular surface llb of the piston 11. The ratio between these two surfaces is approximately 2 to 1.
The reversing valve consists of a housing 1 on which is mounted a perforated plug 12, the bore 13 of which contains a shaft 14 which can be moved axially. The housing 7, as well as the plug 12 have the openings and notches necessary to bring the oil under pressure to the delivery pipes 8 and 9. These pipes, as well as an evacuation pipe 15, continue in the plane III- III up to bore 13 of the plug. At this point, the plug has two chambers 16 and 17 open towards the bore 13.
The discharge pipe 9 also comprises, inside the housing 7 and perpendicular to the plug 12, a switch or reversing valve 18 which allows the pipe 9 to communicate with a bypass pipe 19 opening into the pipe 8 by bore face 13.
All the pipes opening into the bore 13 are offset from one another by a right angle.
The arrival of pressurized oil is effected by a channel 20 connected to the delivery pipe 6 which opens into the chamber 16 of the valve 12. The casing 7 also comprises a diametrically opposed channel 21, which passes through the reversing valve. 18 and can be released by means of an opening 22 provided in this valve.
The valve 12 is adjusted hydraulically by means of an auxiliary gear pump 34, driven by the shaft 2a by means of a gear transmission 23 sucking oil into the reservoir 4 via a suction line. 25 to discharge it via a pipe 26 into a chamber 27 provided in a cover 28 mounted on the casing 7. This cover covers a semicircular annular chamber 29 provided in the casing 7, and which is located at
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
half filled by a wing 30 integral with the bushel.
The chamber 27 communicates via channels 31 and 32 with the two ends of the annular space 29, and furthermore comprises a stepped piston slide 33, moved by transmission members actuated from the piston 11 or the slide, and provided with adjustable stops which, depending on the position it occupies, brings the oil under pressure to one or the other race of the wing 30, so that the plug 12 is moved at a right angle in one direction or in the other (see fig. 2).
The limitation of the stroke is given by the meeting with the crankcase.
The oil delivered by the auxiliary pump 24 does not return directly to the reservoir after each displacement of the plug, but is sent in a pipe 34-35 serving to ensure the lubrication of the whole machine, the pipes 35 being, when of the inversion, connected alternately to the annular space 29 filled with oil.
The advance of the table is taken on the shaft 14 carried by the plug which acts by means of an irreversible ratchet coupling 36, and of a transmission with angle gears 37 and 38, on the usual table advance mechanism. In the position of FIG. 1, this shaft is made integral with the plug 12 thanks to the driver 39 carried by its left end, and penetrating through projections 40 into corresponding notches of the plug 12, so that the shaft 14 can follow the rotational movements of the bushel.
The longitudinal movement of the shaft 14, by means of a lever 41 enables the clutch to be effected, the driver 39 then being brought into engagement with a shaft end 42 constantly driven by the gear name 24, so that in this aas the shaft 14 is driven uniformly.

the cover 28 carries a lever 43 connected by a cable 44 to the housing 3 of the hydraulic transmission. If then the plug 12 is moved in the direction of rotation, the arm 43 lifts the casing 3 and thus sets the main pump 3 to the maximum flow.
On the other hand, the casing 3 of the main pump can be adjusted to a determined flow rate fixing the advance speed, by means of an eccentric cam 45. The operation and operation of the device described above are then as follows :
It is assumed that the main pump 2-3 is adjusted by means of the eccentric cam at a determined flow rate which, transmitted through line 8 in front of face 11a of piston 11, produces the desired speed of advance of the slide. a) Roughing work:
In this case, the control members occupy the position shown in FIGS. 2 to 4. Figs. 2 and 3 show more particularly the position of these members during the return of the piston 11.
The chamber 16 receiving the pressurized oil through the pipe 6 and the channel 20 communicates through the bypass 19 and the reversing valve 18 with the pipe 9, so that the pressurized oil can exert its action on the annular face 11b of the piston 11 and moves the latter to the left. In this position of the valve 12, the arm 43 lifts the casing 3 of the main pump and adjusts the latter to the maximum flow rate.
The return of the piston is therefore significantly accelerated compared to the advance, not only because of the difference between the piston surfaces in play, but also because of the maximum flow rate of the pump.
Very shortly before the end of the return stroke, the stops actuated by the slide move the slide 33, to bring it from the position of FIG. 2 towards the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
left of a quantity b. As a result, the pressurized oil supplied by the auxiliary pump 24 is then supplied by the oanal 32 in front of the wing 30, the latter thereby being rotated 90 in the direction of clockwise. During the movement of the wing 30, the oil which is in the chamber 29 is sent through the channel 31 into the lubrication line 35 released at this time. After the changeover, the pressurized oil from the auxiliary pump can again flow out through the lubrication line 34.
Due to the rotation of the plug 12, the arm 43 is lowered, so that the casing 3 of the main pump again rests on the eccentric cam 45, and is therefore at the setting corresponding to the forward speed.
As shown in fig. 4, the chamber 16 communicates during the advance with the delivery pipe 8, thus acting on the face 11a of the piston 11, to thereby ensure the advance of the slide. The oil which is on the rear face of the piston can reach the flow line 15 through the line 9 of the reversing valve 18, the bypass 19 and the channel 17. b) Finishing work:
In order to allow the use of the same device for finishing work which requires higher speeds, it suffices to move the plug such that, during the advance, the two faces of the piston 11 are subjected to the pressure. . The control members then occupy the position of FIG. 6.
The arrival of the fluid-motive on the two faces of the piston doubles the speed of this one, given the ratio 2 to 1 existing between the surfaces of the two faces of the piston.
In this case, the reversing valve is operated a quarter turn and thus cuts off bypass 19 and connects the two pipes 8 and 9.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
with the chamber 16. During the advance, the oil which is behind the piston is sent through the pipe 9 into the chamber 16, and from the latter into the pipe 4, at the same time as the oil delivered. by the main pump through the pipe 8 in front of the piston 11. As a result, the delivered volume is increased by the quantity of oil displaced behind the piston, and the advance speed is increased in the same proportions.
For the return, the plug 12 is brought into the position of FIG. 5 in which the chamber 16 communicates through the reversing valve with the pipe, while the oil located in front of the piston 11 to flow through the pipe 8, the annular channel 17 and the pipe 15. In this position, the pump is also set to maximum flow. c) Stop position:
In order to be able to immediately stop the slide whatever its position, it suffices to bring the lever 46 controlling the reversing valve 18 to its middle position. Indeed, this maneuver releases the channel 21 previously closed by the said valve and making the chamber 16 communicate with the outside thanks to the provision of the opening 22 in the valve, so that the oil delivered by the pump 3 returns without pressure in the tank.
The operations described above allow to realize that the control of the machine for the work of finishing or roughing or its stopping, can be carried out by the single lever 46. At the same time the duration of the return is reduced to the minimum. by simultaneous adjustment of pump 3 to maximum flow, and kept constant for all feed speeds.
In order to soften the reversal of the displacement of the piston 1, the coupling members connecting the plug 12 to the adjustable part of the feed pump have
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
some dead racing. This result can for example be obtained by giving the angle of rotation of the plug 12 and, therefore, that of the arm 43, a value double that of the angle of rotation of the pump casing. As a result, the pump is not lifted, during the passage from the advance to the return, until the moment when the bushel has already completed half of its travel, so that very shortly before the change of direction piston, oil can arrive through line 9 on the other side of it.
The acceleration is therefore not very important, that is to say that the water hammers which can occur during the inversion of the entire volume of oil are avoided.
On the other hand, during the passage of the piston from the return to the advance, the flow rate of the pump is reduced during the first half of the stroke of the plug, and the bypass of the oil stream is only then effected. An optimum effect is therefore obtained by reoouring only extremely simple measurements. d) Fast forward and rewind:
The jerky advance of the table is controlled, as has been said above, by bushel 12; by pivoting the lever 41 to the right (fig. 1), the plug is made integral with the shaft 14 which it contains and which actuates, when the piston returns, the advance mechanism via the mechanism irreversible ratchet.
If then the shaft 14 is brought to the left by means of the lever 41, the projections 40 of the driver 39 are progressively released from the corresponding grooves of the plug, so that, depending on the magnitude of this displacement, there is created a more or less important play between these two members which results in a more or less important sliding of the shaft relative to the plug. Therefore, all

of the rotary movement of the plug is no longer transmitted to the shaft 14, and the feed communicated to the table decreases.
It can therefore be seen that the advance of the table can be adjusted between certain limits thanks to the lever 41.
In order to reduce the idling times, it is necessary to provide for the continuous displacement of the table not only by hand, but also mechanically; this continuous movement must moreover only be able to take place after the discontinuous movement has been triggered. This result is obtained by completely separating the shaft 14 from the plug 12 by a greater displacement to the left and by bringing the driver 39 in contact with the shaft 42 driven by the motor and rotating constantly. The advance, as well as the rapid return are therefore controlled by a single lever and the succession of operations is always carried out in the desired order.
A particularly interesting advantage of the invention lies in the fact that all the settings such as those of the working speed of roughing, of finishing work and of feed between zero and a maximum, as well as that of the feed and of rapid rewind can take place while the machine is running.
On the other hand, thanks to the reversing valve uniting the entire control, we have succeeded in reducing the number of control levers to the minimum possible, these levers also being able to be arranged in a convenient and accessible manner on the outside face. of the machine and having only a very small footprint.
It goes without saying that the invention is in no way limited to high-speed planers, and that it applies just as well to other machine tools in which either the tool or the workpiece makes a movement. alternative;
