BREVET D'INVENTION.
" Perfectionnements apportés aux moyens pour combattre la @
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PATENT.
"Improvements made to the means to combat @
EMI1.1
propagation of flames at the outlet of a duct, µfµ4Qg of an engine exhaust pipe. "The invention relates to the means for combating the propagation of flames at the outlet of a duct carried by a device moving in the air or in any case subjected to the action of an air current; and it more specifically, (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these means, those for exhaust ducts of internal combustion or internal combustion engines, in particularly on air navigation devices.
Its aim, above all, is to make these means such as they respond better than hitherto to the various desiderata of practice, in particular that they be less bulky, therefore lighter, and simpler.
It consists, mainly, to achieve the means
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the type in question, to cause the flames to exit through at least one elongated orifice provided by the aforesaid duct, this orifice being arranged so as to appear substantially in a direction normal to the relative air flow.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that for which it is applied to the means for preventing the escape of flames from the exhaust pipes of aircraft engines) as well as certain embodiments of said provisions. ; and it aims, more particularly still and this as new industrial products, the means of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the sets, fixed or mobile in particular the aircraft, comprising of similar means.
And it can, in any case, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Fig, 1, of this drawing, schematically shows the assembly of an in-line cylinder engine and its cowling) this assembly being provided with means, according to the invention, to prevent the propagation of flames at the outlet of the pipes. exhaust.
Figs. 2 and 3, on the one hand, and FIGS. 4 and 5, on the other hand, show similarly in elevation and in section (by III-III fig. 2 and VV fig. 4), similar means, on a larger scale, established in accordance with two different embodiments of the 'invention.
Fig. 6 shows, in elevation, a star engine provided with means in accordance with the invention, the assembly also being in accordance with said invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to those of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing, for example, to provide an airplane engine or other air navigation device, with means intended to prevent flames can be seen at the outlet of the exhaust duct (s), this is done as follows or in a similar fashion.
These means are arranged in such a way that the flame is brought out, for each of the conduits to be considered, through at least an elongated orifice and arranged in such a way as to present itself substantially in a direction normal to the direction of displacement of the gear.
It has in fact been observed that such an arrangement made it possible to reduce the length of the flame, to the point of making it invisible, and even made it possible to extinguish it completely, such a result being achieved, on the one hand. thanks to the fact that said flame is spread over a great length, which obviously tends to considerably reduce its thickness, and, on the other hand, thanks to the fact that a large volume of fresh air mixes with the gases exhaust along the aforesaid opening, which tends to extinguish the flame,
To achieve the means implementing the aforesaid arrangement, one can proceed in many ways depending in particular on the number and the arrangement of the cylinders of the engine, it being understood that the invention can be applied to all types of engines, star-shaped (fig. . 6), in line (fig,
1), H, V etc.
In general, it seems that there is an advantage in having one exhaust duct per cylinder, although such an arrangement is in no way limiting, and, advantageously taking advantage of the fact that the means according to the invention are particularly effective, that is to say that they make it possible to extinguish the flames even in the immediate vicinity of the cylinders, the pipes in question will be placed as close as possible to said cylinders, so as to reduce to a minimum
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the bulk, and at the same time the weight, conditions which hitherto could not be satisfied by means of known means of this kind.
In accordance with the invention, therefore, will be added to the cylinders 4, in the immediate vicinity thereof and possibly outside the cowling 1, when such a cowling is provided (FIG. 1), portions of tubes 2 forming both exhaust ducts and anti-flame device, said tubes being each provided for this purpose with at least one elongated slot 5 which is presented in a direction substantially normal to the direction of movement 7 and which is either arranged or , according to the simplest embodiment, in the direction of the length of the tubes 2 which are then oriented in a suitable manner, being for example vertical in the case of the in-line motor (fig. 1), or arranged in aras of circles, (or any other way), in the case of a star motor (fig.
6), or, optionally, in the transverse direction, in which case the end of each tube would for example be made in the shape of a fan, this embodiment being however more bulky,
Assuming, as will be done in what follows, that the slots are longitudinal, we can arrange these slots in any suitable place of the tubes, provided that their direction remains suitable; one could, for example, provide them at the rear part of the tubes, as can be seen on figs 4 and 5.
But it seems preferable, for the extinction of the flames, to have each slot in a plane tangy to the tube following the direction of movement of the machine, as visible in FIGS. 2 and 3.
It will be advantageous to give the slots 3 a shape such that their cross-section grows towards the free end of the tubes, so as to obtain an outlet of the gases distributed regularly over the entire length, and this arrangement also making it possible to distribute the flame regularly over its entire length, which promotes extinction.
Finally, of course, the tubes or pipes in question
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
may have a profiled shape, to reduce the resistance to advancement.
As a result of which, whatever the embodiment adopted, an assembly is obtained whose operation results sufficiently from the foregoing for it to be unnecessary to dwell on it and which presents, compared with the means of the kind in question. question already existing, many advantages, in particular, that of being very efficient, while being extremely simple, and that of being compact and light.
Until now, it had been proposed, either to mask the flames by screens, which leads to a high bulk, or to cool the gases by passing through pipes cooled externally, which leads to exaggerated weights, because said tubes must be long, or to cool the gases by mixing them with a stream of cool air inside the tubes, which has the disadvantage that the unburned gases reignite, the flames then being increased for certain modes the engine or in the event of faulty ignition in the cylinders,
The invention eliminates all these drawbacks.
Advantageously, according to an arrangement capable, where appropriate, of being used in isolation, the internal wall of the tubes 2 will be painted black with the aid of a varnish or other heat-resistant coating, this arrangement also tending to reduce the length of the flame. For example, parkerization can be used for this purpose.
As it goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from what precedes. the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, which have been more specially indicated; it embraces, on the contrary, all of them. variants.
