 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

     Ce dernier moyen d'obtenir l'étanchéité nécessaire ne donne pas d'autre part satisfaction par suite des dilatations différentes, à la chaleur, des pièces en question, d'où il résulte un frottement élevé et l'usure des parties trottantes.

  Improvements to rotary valves for internal combustion engines.

    ------------------
In the use of rotary, cylindrical or tubular valves on internal combustion engines, difficulties have been encountered in achieving a satisfactory seal between the coaxial cylindrical surfaces which rotate with respect to each other.

   It has been proposed to achieve the necessary sealing by making the rotating surfaces slightly conical and it has also been proposed to use sealing gaskets of different natures such as, for example, elastic segments making a spring, of the same type as those which are used on the pistons.

   Also, it has been proposed to achieve the necessary sealing by using perfectly fitting parts, the cylindrical surfaces being provided with lubricating devices, in the ordinary manner.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

     The latter means of obtaining the necessary sealing is not satisfactory on the other hand as a result of the different expansions, to heat, of the parts in question, resulting in high friction and wear of the trotting parts.

   The invention is based on the recognition of this fact that it is possible, with rotary valves of this nature, to obtain a satisfactory seal without the use of gaskets or sealing rings and without providing a perfect fit of the different parts. of the valve.

   It has been found that it is possible to obtain the necessary tightness in an annular space between two coaxial cylindrical surfaces, by means of a layer of oil maintained in this space, the said layer behaving foams an elastic gasket between rotating surfaces.

   The difference in the diameters of the two coaxial oylindri c surfaces between which it is necessary to obtain the seal, in accordance with the present invention, is established 10 to 50 times greater than the difference in diameter achieved in the case of perfectly adjusted parts, the difference in diameter in the latter case being generally 0.08 m / m., while this difference in diameter, in the case of the invention, varies from 0.1 to 1 m / m at most.

   By using this large difference in diameter between said parts, any risk of contact and friction between the surfaces in question is avoided, even in the case of large expansion or contraction corresponding to the different temperatures.

   Two embodiments of the invention are shown schematically in the drawings:

 Single rotating cylindrical valve body in a cylindrical valve box.

   Figs. 3 and 4 are * similar sectional views * of an embodiment cast iron in which a tubular rotary valve operates in an annular space comprised between a fixed water-cooled core and a coaxial cylindrical valve box and which surrounds it.

   According to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, there is above the cylinders 1, a cylindrical valve box 8 extending above all the cylinders and in which there is a rotating valve body 3. , which has, in the usual way, channels or cavities to connect the inlet and outlet passages 4 and 5 with the opening 1 communicating the valve box with the cylinder.

   The rotating valve body is mounted on 7 ball bearings and passes through the box without supports or linings. Between the cylinders, the rotating valve body 3 has reinforcements 8 in order to provide spaces where the sealing oil is stored, placed between the rotor and the internal wall of the valve box. We see at 9 channels for the introduction of oil.

   According to the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4, the valve body 1, which is provided with channels, is mounted fixed in the valve boot 1 and, in the space between the valve boot and the fixed body 3, a rotary tubular valve body 10 is housed, mounted on the ball bearings 7 and 11 and which. dimensions such that it does not touohe either the inner body 3 or the inner wall of the valve box.

   Of course, the invention can also be applied to rotary valves comprising more than one tubular body of
