    @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Installation comprising an electric discharge tube in a gas atmosphere.

   Gas-filled electric discharge tubes are sometimes combined with automatic priming devices. It is known, for example, to connect a tube of this kind in series with a reactance coil and to mount in parallel with this tube a circuit branch which bypasses the tube and comprises an electromagnetic switch actuated by the reactance coil. serial.

    @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 When the discharge tube is put into operation, this switch is closed so that when the current source is switched on, the circuit branch in parallel with the tube as well as the reactance coil are passed through. a current, which causes the switch to open. As a result of this interruption of the current, a voltage shock occurs in the reactance coil which causes the tube to fire. If the ignition is actual, the discharge current passes through the reactance coil so that the switch remains open. If, however, the tube is not primed, the switch closes so that the discharge tube is again shorted and the backlash is repeated.

   If the discharge tube becomes sufficiently defective that it cannot be triggered any more, the priming device remains in operation permanently, which can lead to damage to this device, for example sticking of the switch, and other faults, for example radio interference.

   Similar disadvantages are encountered in the use of other automatic priming devices, for example those used in combination with discharge tubes with liquid mercury electrodes and causing the tubes to be primed by a rocking motion. which puts the electrodes in contact with each other for a period of time. With devices of this kind an attempt has been made to eliminate the inconvenience that the priming device continues to function as long as the discharge tube has not yet been ignited, by providing them with a bimetallic switch which is traversed. and heated by current during function- @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 priming device.

   When the device operates in vain for a certain period of time, the bimetallic switch takes a temperature, high enough to interrupt the circuit of the starting device, the latter being thus put out of service.

   Such protection by means of a bimetallic switch is, however, quite expensive not only because this switch increases the costs of the first establishment of the installation but also because it is necessary to provide a stop device which maintains open the bimetallic switch after switching off the starter device. If this shut-off device did not exist, the priming device would be actuated again after the cooling of the bimetal member.

   The invention relates to an installation comprising an electric discharge tube in a gaseous atmosphere as well as an automatic starting device and it aims to eliminate in a simple and inexpensive manner the drawback resulting from the fact that the device priming remains in operation until the discharge tube is primed.

   In accordance with the invention, the starting device is provided with a fuse having a high positive temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance, this fuse only being traversed by the current during the operation of the device. priming and shutting it off when it melts. When the installation is put into service and the starting device begins to operate, the fuse still has a low temperature so that its resistance is low and it is only heated to one. moderate temperature.

   If the priming device continues

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in operation, the fuse acquires a higher temperature and resistance so that it is heated more and more strongly and - finally, after a certain period of operation of the starting device, it melts and puts this device out of service. It has been found that it is thus possible to obtain an exactly regulated protection of the starting device, which is not the case with an ordinary fuse whose temperature coefficient is substantially equal to zero.

   As fuse, it is possible to use, for example, a wire placed in an atmosphere of hydrogen or air, these resistors being generally known under the name of "variators". The variators used as fuses in the installation which is the object of the invention can have very small dimensions.

   By the term "gas-atmosphere discharge tube" is meant hereinafter not only the tubes -filled with one or more gases but also the tubes filled with an atmosphere of vapor or gas and vapor.

   The invention will be better understood by referring to the appended drawing which shows schematically, by way of example, one embodiment.

   The installation shown comprises a discharge tube 1 which may be of known construction and is constituted for example by a sodium vapor discharge tube intended to be used for lighting. Tube 1 is connected in series with a reactance coil 2 mounted upstream, to an alternating current source 3. In parallel with tube 1 is located a branch of circuit 4 comprising a switch 5 and a variator 6. The latter consists of a glass bulb inside which is stretched a wire and which is filled with hydrogen or air. Inter-

 breaker 5 is arranged in the manner of an electromagnetic switch and is actuated by coil 2. When this coil is not carrying current, switch 5 is closed.

   It opens when the coil: 2 is carrying a current of sufficient intensity. To start up the installation, the main switch 7 is closed. Because the tube 1 is short-circuited by the switch 5, a current passes through the reactance coil 2, the switch 5 and the variator 6. The magnetic field of coil 2 causes switch 5 to open, which results in producing a voltage shock in the reactance coil which tends to ignite tube 1. If successful, switch 5 remains open under the influence of the discharge current flowing through coil 2. If priming of the tube has not taken place, switch 5 closes and the play of the priming can recommence.

   If, even after repeated efforts, the ignition has not taken place, the starting device remains only in operation until the resistor 6 is heated by the current flowing through the circuit branch 4 during the operation of the priming device at a temperature high enough to melt which results in the starting device ceasing to function. It is then possible to replace the resistor 6 and at the same time remedy the defect in the discharge tube.
