1 ) le cas de deux trains roulant sur la même voie et se diri- geantde front l'un sur l'autre;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
2 ) le cas de deux trains roulant sur la même voie, dans la mê- me directionp mais dont celui qui se trouve en tête a une vitesse in- férieure à celui qui le suit, de telle manière que le second rejoint et entre en collision avec le fourgon de queue du premier;
3 ) le cas de deux trains se trouvant sur la même voie et dont l'un se trouve arrêté en gare ou ailleurs, et l'autre arrivant par derrière ou par devant;
4 ) le cas de deux trains se trouvant sur deux voies différentes et se dirigeant tous deux vers une traversée de voies en forme d'X,ou ur croisement de voies en forme d'Y, de façon à se prendre en éoharpe;
5 ) le @@s d'un train se précipitant sur un ou plusieurs wagons abandonnés ou garés sur la voie;
6 ) le cas d'un train se précipitant sur le butoir d'une gare terminus ou sur celui posé à l'extrémité d'une voie de garage;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

1 )L'aiguille A appuie sur un plot négatif(dans la fig.le plot L):

Cette jonction s'effectuera;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
peler "intervertisseur".
Sen principe est le suivant(fig.16);
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Electro-mechanical protection system, or multiple prevention of train telescoping and level crossing accidents,
The object of the present invention is a new electro-mechanical protection system preventing ormulatively, by the automatic stopping of trains, the telescoping of convoys between them and level crossing accidents.
Stopping is carried out at a distance: from two or more trains in danger of buffering, from a train in front of a possible obstacle or an open level crossing.
Among the numerous cases of telescoping and level crossing accidents which the object of the present invention is intended to prevent, the following may be mentioned by way of example:
1) the case of two trains running on the same track and facing each other;
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
2) the case of two trains running on the same track, in the same direction, but the one at the head of which has a lower speed than the one following it, so that the second meets and collides with the caboose of the first;
3) the case of two trains on the same track, one of which is stopped at a station or elsewhere, and the other arriving from behind or in front;
4) the case of two trains being on two different tracks and both heading towards an X-shaped crossing of tracks, or a Y-shaped crossing of tracks, in such a way as to form a scarp;

The use of the system requires an installation reigning over the entire parcourg of the railway line and another installation to have

@@ all locomotives or motor cars.
The installation arranged on the railway track consists of laying a line of bare copper cables in the air. Their height, in relation to the ground, will be slightly greater than that of the verification templates, i.e. about four meters. Their geometric projection on the ground will show the axis of the track. The railways being almost everywhere framed by telegraph poles, telephone or other, it is these same which will be used to support the major part of the protective line.
In the parts of the track without posts, new ones of the ordinary model will be placed.
This line will be formed by a double row of sections of cables, each of which will be two kilometers long and will be isolated. The arrangement of the sections will be such that each of the sections of a row will begin and end in the middle of two consecutive sections. from the next row.
Fig. 1 shows that section 1-2, two kilometers long, goes from the middle of section 3-4 to the middle of section 5-6. Between ends 4 and 5, there is an insulating joint of the same thickness as the cable.A gap between the two rows of about ten centimeters must be maintained, so that it is impossible for one row to touch the other.
The locomotives will be equipped with a trolley similar to that of the electric trains, and intended to press constantly against the two rows of the line previously described.
Therefore, considering that the rails take the place of return wire, a closed circuit will always be established between two trains separated by one to two kilometers from each other. Intermediate, the trolleys of the two trains will have come into contact with the same section of the protective line.
Figs. 6 and 7 show these contacts at extreme distances. The lo- c @ motives W3 and W4 point towards each other; there is no between closed circuit. They will continue their advance under the same conditions until that, having reached 'NI and W2 respectively, a closed circuit will be established between alles. In fig. 6, the locomotives are located one kilometer from each other; in fig. 7, they are two kilometers apart.

If the speedometer is designed for forward and m @@, the arrangement of the studs will be as shown in fig. 2. A driver will start from each of the studs and the needle.
4) A mechanical receiver and a switch. The object of this receiver is to transform an electric current that it receives into a mechanical movement suitable for being adapted to the brake of the motor. Whatever this receiver, its principle will always be only an application of the classical transformation of electrical energy into mechanical energy. The forms are varied and only one of them will be indicated here,
The receiver (fig. 12) consists of a suction electromagnet.
Through levers and joints, the downward movement of the soft iron core is used to actuate the hydraulic or air brake.
The upper base carries a spring hook intended to keep the core plunged after the attraction.
A switch l, the position of which depends on that of the core, is ad- j @ to the whole of this part. The core being outside the solenoid, the switch is closed) plunged inside, the switch is open
The resistance of the brake and the inertia of the levers and joints could be sufficient to keep the core out of the body of the electromagnet. If necessary, a spring can compensate for the insufficiency of the purely resistance. mechanical.
The four parts which have just been described feel united in the electrical assembly of fig.13.
G is the generator, M the watch)! the switch, R the receiver consisting of a suction electromagnet, 1 the speed indicator.
The watch has two pads L and L 'on which, passing from one to the other, presses the seconds hand A.
The switch is closed due to the external position of the electromagnet core.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
F shows the cables of the protective line. The trolley rests on them.
Z represents the rails, which act as the return wire, the locomotive wheels adhere to them and a conductor makes them communicate with the needle J of the speedometer.
The watch is powered by the generator and its circuit is as follows.
EMI7.1
Vant = G-343 536-3 9-40-.I-41-42-43-44-M-4 5..46 4 7-32-33., G.
The assembly of the four parts thus designed makes a contact between F and Z.
This contact is direct if the train is stopped, or if it has a speed lower than 20 kilometers per hour: F-48-N'-J'-Z.
The train traveling at a speed greater than 20 km. per hour, hand J of the speedometer is in contact with stud N. This well established, two cases must be considered depending on whether hand A of the watch is in contact with a stud negative or with a positive plot. The relation between F and Z differs in both of these cases *
1) Needle A presses on a negative pin (in fig. Pin L):
EMI7.2
F-25.26-R-27-2 8-29-.3 0-A.L-31-32- $ 3G 34-3 5-3 6-3 7-N-JZ.
2) The needle A is in contact with a õsitifile stud L ': F-25-26-R-2728-29-30-A'-L'-38-36-37-N-J-Z.
We see that, whatever the position of the needle A, the receiver is always incorporated in the circuit FZ, but it is only when the needle is in contact with a negative stud that the generator y figure too.
Cn will now consider the case of two trains in danger of falling

They have a speed of more than 20 km. per hour, come at a distance of one to two kilometers from each other and, due to this last fact) both enter into contact with the same section of the protective line and a closed circuit is immediately established between them.
The electro-magnetic action will not take place if the watch hands of the two trains are both in contact with a negative stud,

or both in contact with a positit pad, ear) in the first case, the generators would put themselves in opposition and, in the second case, the two generators would cancel each other out of the circuit. But, if the needles of the two trains press one on one negative stud and the other on a stud
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
positive, only one of the two generators will then deliver its charge that the two receivers coupled in series. This contrary position of the hands of the two watches must necessarily occur very shortly because,
for the same speed of the hands and the same dial surface, the watches of locomotives or power cars have a different number of studs.
The complete ci.:=cuit between two trains is shown in fig. 14. The solid lines indicate the portions of the circuit through which the current passes, the dotted lines, those which cancel each other out. The arrows define the direction that goes with the flow.
The first attraction having taken place, it is necessary to immobilize the needles on the suitable pads, because, otherwise, the current would reach the receivers only at intermittent intervals. A switch I, actuated by the plunger core (in the case of a receiver consisting of a suction electromagnet) interrupts the current supplying the watch, from which it follows a stop of the oolle-oi and, consequently, of the hand.
Stopping a train does not detract from its protection, although its safety system is isolated. It has already been said that the speedometer needle then being in contact with the stud N ', where this came back to a direct junction between the protective cables and the r'-. 8, Another train coming in contact with the section of cable controlled by which the trolley of the stopped train is pressing (the moving train moving at a distance of one to two kilometers from the other), would see his protective system would work as long as the hand of his watch reached a negative pin, because, as always, a closed circuit was established in addition to the two trains.
This brought as a cor @ llary that all that, on the -track, is likely to be @n @ @@ a @@ e, leaves to be protected and ensure the protection of a train evading the nom @ @bamponneur, by simply joining the overhead cables and a rail
This junction will take place;
At the location of a buttress of a garage and the one located at the end of a siding.
At the place of a paration route.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Where there are abandoned cars on the track or just parked.
In any place where, for whatever reason, we want to prevent the passage of trains.
To voluntarily approach one of these obstacles, all the mechanic has to do is reduce the speed of the train to less than 20 km. on time.
The junction, at the location of a stopper, will be made definitively. Otherwise, it will only be temporary. In the latter case, a portable pole will be used hanging on to the two cables and fixing to a rail. could adapt to the needles (of the switching system) a switch that would automatically activate the needle and which, depending on whether or not a siding or storage track is connected to the main track, would establish or interrupt contact cables for the siding and the main track.
The arrangement of overhead cables will present some particularities in a crossing of a track, a crossing of a track, etc.
Fig. 2 shows the case of a track opening. A 9-10 section, one kiolmeter long, is welded to the middle 10 of a 7-8 section belonging to the other track. straight track 12-13 is normal; curved track 11-13 is also normal, section 9-10-8 measuring two kilometers, and finally portions of tracks 11-10 and 12-10 also have a compliant cable layout in principle since the angular section 9-10-7 measures two kilometers.
In a track crossing (fig. 3), a section 19-20, belonging to one of the two tracks., Is welded in its middle 18 to the middle of section 21-22, belonging to the other track.
In the case (fig.4) of two parallel tracks x and ss crossed by a transverse track r, it will be arranged, in 23-24, two sections of two kilometers each placed side by side. One of them will be welded in the middle of a section of the Voó, the other in the middle of a section of the VoioP. i, there will be no contact between the cables of tracks Ó and ss.
In the case of two parallel tracks crossed by two other equally parallel tracks, the arrangement of the cables will be as shown in fig. 5. Only the large dots indicate the junction points. Protection is thus guaranteed everywhere. without the parallel tracks
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
they have contact with each other.
The principle of adding a section for each additional track crossed makes it possible to resolve the most special cases.
The installation of protective cables in a track served by electric railcars with trolley will be the same. The three rows will be placed next to each other, using the existing poles.
A dual-use trolley will press half on the electric cable and half on the protective cables.
Only bifurcations, crossings or crossings of tracks will have a special installation. When the electric cable crosses the protective double row, the first must not communicate its current to the sections with which it is in contact. is not indicated to practice a simple insulation at the junction points because, if it is. was done, the side of the trolley intended for protection would come, at the pass, in contact with the electric cable. A section of the electric cable @@@ was therefore made on either side of the double protective row and, in order to that: The tractor circuit is not interrupted, an external connection will connect the two cut ends.
In addition, when a track crosses two parallel tracks, an additional section is added, as in non-electrified tracks, preventing contact of the parallel tracks.
These cases are detailed in fig. 15. The electric cable is divided into 49 and 5C and the cut ends are connected by the connector 51. The two sections, placed side by side, go from 52 to 53. from them is welded only to one section of each of the parallel tracks, sn 54 for one and 55 for the other.
A train (fig. 15) which would attempt to pass from the right branch to the left branch following the direction of the arrow, would be prevented from it because, in the first, the electric cable was on its right and the protective cables to its left, while in the second disr @ sition of cables would be opposite.
It is @@ which makes that the electric trains must have an additional part, a kind of automatic switch which "switches the two jets of the trolley" and that, for this reason, will have to apply.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
peel "inverter".
Its principle is as follows (fig. 16);
A circular part, movable around its axis of rotation, carries, arranged at 90 from each other, four pads 58,59,60,61. Two single conductors connect one of the pads 58 and 59, the other the pads 60 and 51. These four pads are in contact with four other 62,63,64,65, belonging to another fixed concentric circular part.
The stud 62 carries a conductor which communicates it to a terminal of the towing machine. The opposite stud 64 carries another connecting it to the protective system and which, in fig. 13 would be the portion of wire? -25. pads 63 and 65 each communicate with a terminal of the trolley. These bounded 66 and 67 are in contact, one with the protective double row, the other with the cable used for traction.
The trolley terminals are reversed by rotating the movable disc by a quarter of a circle (fig. 17) In industrial application, the disc will carry twelve studs, which will only require a rotation of 30. assembly, of these studs is shown in fig. 18 A twelfth of a circle rotation, in one direction or the other, reverses the trolley terminals. Figs. 18 and 19 show the two positions *.
The rotation of the movable disc is mechanically controlled by the automatic lowering of a lever opening the side of the railcar.
Fig. 21 schematically shows an embodiment of the inverter mechanism.
The movable disc is riveted to a wheel D, carrying twelve teeth cut in the ratchet profile. When the lever Y is lowered, this movement, through other levers and joints, exerts a traction on the hook , S, which moves the wheel forward by one tooth. To possibly stop the momentum of the wheel, a stop pin U, describing a circled arc around its fulcrum, is placed, at each end of travel of the outer lever, against a tooth face. The lug, at the same time as the hook, is controlled by the outer lever. But the stop lug coming into operation, the wheel will have some.
In reality, it advances by a little more than one tooth. The surplus must therefore be corrected by an equivalent recoil. The snap E causes this recoil. By the pressure, provided by a spring, of its internal plane.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
clinked in contact with the top of a tooth, it always tends to be placed in a hollow in the teeth.
Once this work has been done, a spring X, suitably placed, returns the external lever to its original position, pulling all the elements of the mechanical system, except the wheel. The hook2 in the recoil movement, bends at its articulation 0, slides on a tooth top and is placed, by its own weight, in the next tooth gap.
The internal faoe of the wheel carries the twelve studs which will be isolated.
These, as well as the fixed part carrying the four studs, are hidden in the figure by the toothed wheel.
Of all this mechanism, only the large arm Y of the lever emerges on the outside. It is placed on one side of the automatic machine, at a sufficient height so that it is out of reach.
The outer lever is lowered by a horizontal plane, the ends of which, with respect to the plane, form a very gentle slope, as gentle as possible so that the shock is attenuated (fig. 20). Its total length can easily be five meters and, if necessary, much more. This part is placed in all the places of the track where it is necessary to invert the terminals of the trolley. We put one of each side of the track. In the case shown in fig. 15, it is at 56 and 57 that the inverter planes are placed. The space between these planes and devoid of electric cable, cannot appreciably , influence the walk of the railcar,
because the momentum with which the mobile train is animated is always sufficient to make it easily cross this zone.
This plane will be placed at the height of the external lever of the inverter.
It would be useful to add that if, for some reason, the side of the trolley intended for protection comes into contact with the electric cable, the only effect of this error is to see the brake of the motor coach operate. fault can immediately be repaired by lowering ma- n @ @emert @ outer lever of the inverter.
@@ canism which has just been described is only one example of the many applications of the inverter,
As regards level crossings, it will be considered that a level crossing open to the traffic of road vehicles is assimilated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
lable to an obstacle.
To all level crossings *, therefore, a switch will be added, the closing and opening of which are automatically controlled by the raising and lowering of the barrier.
Thus, with the level crossing open, the switch is closed and establishes communication between the protective cables * and a rail; the level crossing being closed, communication is interrupted.
In level crossings without a barrier, contact will definitely be made between the protective cables and a rail. A sign post will warn the mechanic to have to slow down if he does not want to expose himself to being forced to do so. 11 may only pass through this dangerous intersection at a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
Some motor coaches do not have a speedometer. To these, one will be added as much as possible. If, however, its installation presented great difficulties, this part could be replaced by a switch.
This switch is incorporated in the electrical assembly, as shown in fig. 22.Ii is bipolar and can establish contact between K and H or between Q and H. These movements are operated * manually by the mechanic. protection is always ensured when arm B is pressed in K (here, no speed limit, as before, of 20 km. per hour). But when the mechanic voluntarily wants to approach an obstacle, enter the station, etc. must operate its switch and bring the arm to 'Q. The locomotive's own system is therefore isolated and direct contact is established between the protective cables and the ground.
Completely accessory and optional, one could add to the system, a manual switch which, in fig, 13, would appear between F and 25. This switch would allow a stationary train or in or- be able to isolate themselves completely when necessary.
Some people wanting to use only the protection relating to the dangers of level crossings, which will follow, will relate to the specific data to avoid the latter, apart from the dangers of telescope.
Installation in level crossings will consist of laying a single copper cable two kilometers long.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
will be located at the level crossing. A single-pole switch will automatically establish or interrupt contact between the cable and a rail, depending on whether the crossing is open or closed.
The locomotive shall be fitted with a horizontal trolley of reduced dimensions or with any part enabling it to come into contact with the cable.
Inside the locomotive, the system only includes the generator and receiver described above.
The electrical assembly of the system is shown in fig. 23.
