 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Les buts plus particuliers de cette invention sont de permettre, par le procédé, et l'appareil en question, de faire réagir le carbure de calcium d'une façon continue et complète pour produire simultanément de l'acétylène et de l'hydrate de calcium sensiblement sec en quantités industrielles ; de régler et disperser efficacement la chaleur de la réaction de façon à éviter les effets nuisibles de températures élevées locales; de donner une stabilité inhérente au procédé et à l'appareil de façon que la qualité du produit résiduel ne soit pas affectée par de petites variations dans les quantités de réactifs fournies; d'empêcher que des impuretés lourdes qui sont inévitablement introduites avec le carbure et des particules de carbure n'ayant pas réagi puissent sortir de l'appareil avec le résidu et contaminer celuici ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

D'autre

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 22>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 23>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 24>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 25>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 26>

  "PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ACETYLENE AND THE OBTAINING OF A SENSITIVELY DRY RESIDUE OF HYDRATED LIME"
This invention relates to a process and apparatus for the production of a gas and obtaining a dry residue by the reaction of a solid material with a liquid and, more particularly, to the production of acetylene. from calcium carbide and water and a substantially dry residue of hydrated lime.

   In general, the present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus by which the production of a substantially dry and industrially useful gas and residue results from a controlled reaction carried out between a solid material and a liquid. a relatively simple, safe, economical and efficient way for the production of gas on an industrial scale.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The more particular objects of this invention are to enable, by the method, and the apparatus in question, to react calcium carbide in a continuous and complete manner to produce simultaneously acetylene and calcium hydrate. substantially dry in industrial quantities; to effectively control and disperse the heat of the reaction so as to avoid the deleterious effects of high local temperatures; to impart inherent stability to the process and apparatus so that the quality of the residual product is not affected by small variations in the amounts of reagents supplied; to prevent heavy impurities which are inevitably introduced with the carbide and unreacted carbide particles from leaving the apparatus with the residue and contaminating it;

   to prevent the water evaporated to absorb the excess heat of the reaction from excessively wetting the residue produced; to maintain the calcium hydrate being produced in a free-flowing and liquid-like state, so that classification and countercurrent of carbide and residue takes place to ensure more efficient contact between carbide and water and thereby accelerated production and more efficient temperature control; and to ensure that equally effective results are obtained with carbides of various sizes (lumps, dust, grains and their mixtures).

   These objects and other objects of the invention and the characteristics which achieve them will be demonstrated in the course of the detailed description given below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

FIG. 1 is an elevational view with partial vertical section of an acetylene generator giving a substantially dry residue by the process according to the invention.

   Figure 2 is a similar view of another construction of apparatus for carrying out the present method.

   Figure 3 is a section through line 3-3 of the apparatus of Figure 2.

   Figure 4 is an elevational view of the agitator device shown in Figure 2.

   Acetylene is usually produced by introducing calcium carbide into a body of water, the latter being present in sufficient quantity so that the heat generated by the reaction between the water and the carbide is absorbed in the form of sensible heat by excess water.

  The residue resulting from the reaction is then in the form of a slurry. It has been found that the production of acetylene by the process of dropping water onto a mass of carbide is excessively dangerous, unless the amount of carbide is very small and the rate of the reaction is controlled. at a very low value to ensure the dissipation of the heat generated by its conduction through the mass during the reaction. The application of the latter process has therefore been limited to the production of very small quantities of gas, as in portable lamps, and in such cases no attempt has been made to interrupt the water supply to obtain a dry residue.

   To produce industrial quantities of acetylene and a substantially dry residue without the intervention of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 dangerously high temperatures, it has been proposed to add to the carbide a sufficient quantity of water to satisfy the condition of a complete reaction and an additional quantity just sufficient to absorb the excess heat of reaction by its evaporation, and to subject the reactive by mechanical stirring in a horizontal retort for a considerable time, until the reaction is complete.

   The carbide and residue are carried along an extended, substantially horizontal path inside the retort, and if the amounts of water and carbide selected have been properly proportioned, a substantially dry residue can be obtained at the tip. outlet of the retort.

  It is however difficult to regulate the temperatures which occur locally in the retort between the desired limits and at the same time to obtain a residue which is neither too wet nor such that it contains unreacted carbide, being since carbide particles are carried to points where the surrounding material is too dry to effect the reaction completely. Considerable quantities of dust are entrained by the gas leaving the reaction zones and are deposited on the walls of the gas conduits, which causes great difficulties due to the clogging of these conduits.

  The vaporized water for temperature control is entrained by the acetylene generated. This moisture tends to condense on the dry lime produced when this lime cools, which has the effect of excessively humidifying the residue.

   The present invention relates to the manufacture of acetylene by a method and apparatus which overcome

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 these difficulties and others. It has been found that the freshly produced hot and dry calcium hydrate powder can be kept in a very runny, liquid-like state and cause the carbide particles, which are relatively heavier, to fall through. a mass of such a hydrate. These properties are taken advantage of in the present manufacturing process by introducing the carbide into a reaction chamber into which controlled amounts of water are introduced and into which a mass of calcium hydrate is maintained in a flowable state. longed for. The carbide and water react to give acetylene and a new amount of hydrate.

   The introduced carbide and the newly generated hydrate cause the hydrate mass to move upward, while the generated gas rises through this mass to help keep it flowing. At the top of the reaction chamber, excess hydrate pours out and is removed so that it cannot come into contact again with the gas, which is collected above the reaction chamber and transferred to a gasometer. The contents of the reaction chamber are preferably continuously agitated by a mechanical device, so as to accelerate the reaction, to ensure the perfect contact of the carbide and the water, to carry out a classification of materials which ensures the descent of the carbide and the displacement of the hydrate upwards, and to avoid the formation of zones of high local temperature.

   The amount of water added is sufficiently in excess of that necessary to carry out the reaction completely so that the average temperature of the contents of the reaction chamber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 be set between the desired limits.

   The upper temperature limit is generally chosen so that no decomposition of acetylene takes place, since the products of such decomposition become impurities in the gas and tend to discolor the residue. The water which vaporizes escapes with the gas, and the vapors are evacuated so that they can no longer come into contact with the residue as soon as the latter has left the reaction chamber where it was maintained at a temperature. constant high. Water is preferably introduced at the bottom of the reaction chamber, and the zone of maximum reaction activity is maintained at this point. We make sure that the carbide goes down towards the water and that, on the contrary, the hydrate rises while moving away from the water.

   Thanks to this characteristic, we are sure that the maximum heat production will take place in the area where there is a surplus of water to absorb this heat in the form of latent heat of evaporation and we do in so that the hot gas and vapor generated rise through the hydrate in the chamber to maintain this hydrate at a constant temperature and in the desired flow state.

   The present acetylene manufacturing process is furthermore inherently more stable and tends to compensate for the irregularities which occur in the supply of carbide and water. For example, if an excess of carbide is temporarily introduced into the reaction chamber, the carbide settles and remains at the bottom until it has reacted with water, i.e. it does not It is not carried to a point where it could mix with the dry lime product. Else

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 On the other hand, if excess water temporarily enters the reaction chamber, this water remains at the bottom until sufficient carbide has reached it. This stability is very advantageous in practice.

   Another advantage of the present process is that the heavy impurity particles, such as ferrosilicon, which are present in certain commercial forms of calcium carbide, are prevented from being washed away with the dry residue, which residue is no longer present. 'thus not being contaminated.

   In the drawings, and in particular in Figure 1, the carbide feed device is generally indicated at A. The reaction chamber where gas is produced is indicated at B, and C represents the device used to collect. the dry residue. The device for supplying water into the reaction chamber is generally indicated at D. In this type of apparatus, the reaction chamber comprises the lower part 10 of a closed container 11 constituting the generator. This part 10 is substantially cylindrical, and its upper end connects to an enlarged part 12 of the generator, part in which the gas generated separates from the residue particles.

   The gas generated escapes from the upper part of the enlargement 12 through a pipe 13 which terminates at the pipe 14 bringing the gas to a reservoir such as a gasometer, which has not been shown for the sake of clarity. drawing. In the upper part of the chamber 10 opens the outlet end of a duct 15 in which is arranged a conveyor screw 16 which is driven in a rotational movement to introduce the desired quantity of carbide into the chamber 10. In this type

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 As an apparatus, carbide is preferably used in grains or in pieces, the size of which is such as to lend itself to its transport by the screw 16.

   Above the carbide conveyor is a carbide supply hopper which is connected to conduit 15 by conduit 18 having an enlargement 19 constituting additional storage capacity for use during times when the hopper is being recharged. The lower part of the hopper 17 is provided with a shutter such as a sliding register 20 making it possible to interrupt the flow of carbide when desired. A handle 21 is provided to move this shutter 20. To protect the contents of the hopper while allowing its filling, a removable cover 22 is provided. Water is introduced into the reaction chamber, preferably at a point. 23 neighbor at the back of room 10.

   The water introduced arrives through a pipe 24 which is controlled by a tap 25 and which has a calibration orifice 26. To indicate the flow of water passing through the orifice, a mercury manometer 27 is provided, one of whose branches is provided. is connected by a pipe 28 to the pipe 24, at a point thereof located downstream of the orifice 26, the other branch being connected by a pipe 29 at a point located upstream of the orifice 26. These two pipes are provided with stop cocks 30 and 31 allowing the pressure gauge 27 to be detached when desired. A branch pipe 32 controlled by a shutoff valve 33 communicates the pipe 24 with an area of the chamber 10 which is located at a desired level above the bottom of this chamber. Connection 32 can be used

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 for the supply of an auxiliary water quantity.

   The hydrated lime produced in the chamber 10 and rising in this chamber is withdrawn from the container 11 by a pipe 34, which opens into the widening 12 at a point located just above the reaction chamber 10 and through which the hydrated lime is transferred to a lime tank 35 to which the pipe 34 is connected by a fitting 36 The pipe 34 is preferably provided with an Archimedean screw 37 ensuring the desired movement of the residue. The lower part of the lime tank 35 is provided with an exhaust pipe 38 controlled by a sliding register 39.

  A gas inlet pipe 35 ', controlled by a valve, is also provided at the bottom of the tank 35 to allow the introduction of dry acetylene when it is desired to agitate the hydrate collected and to remove the moisture therefrom. in excess.

   To ensure proper agitation of the contents of the reaction chamber, two groups of agitators are provided, both of which rotate around the central vertical axis of the container 11. One of them comprises a frame 40 whose shape closely follows the interior surface of the container 11, this framework comprising two identical parts 40 which are connected at their upper and lower ends by arms 41 and 42, respectively.

  The arm 41 is provided with a central hub 43 wedged on the vertical inner shaft 44. This inner shaft is journaled, at its upper end, in a bearing 45 which is supported inside part 12 of the container 11 by a center or spider with three arms 46 secured to the walls

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 of the container. The lower end of the shaft 44 is journalled in a clamp 47 located outside the container 11. The shaft 44 is surrounded by a hollow shaft 48 which rises through a stuffing box 49 mounted in the inner wall. of the chamber 10, shaft to which are fixed a series of paddles or agitator fins 50 distributed over the entire height of the chamber 10.

   Shaft 44 can rotate freely in shaft 48 and the two shafts are preferably actuated to rotate in opposite directions, their control preferably being effected by means of a pair of angle gears. The lower pinion 51 of the pair is clamped on the lower shaft 44 and the upper pinion 52 is clamped on the outer hollow shaft 48. These pinions 51 and 52 both mesh with a pinion 53 which, when brought into position. rotation, turns pinions 51 and 52 in opposite directions. The pinion 53 is mounted on the receiving shaft 54 of a speed change 55 intended to reduce the speed of its motor shaft 56 to the desired speed for normal operation.

  The shaft 56 is directly coupled to an electric motor 57 to which the electric current is supplied by wires 58 On these wires is mounted a wattmeter 59 which continuously indicates the amount of energy used to operate the generator. To ensure the necessary space to house the gears below the container, the latter is supported by means of feet 60. The arm 42 is also provided with a central hub which rotates freely on the shaft 48 so that the doctor blade 40 can rotate in the opposite direction of the paddles 50 The rotation of the two agitator systems in opposite directions ensures perfect agitation of the contents of the reaction chamber and is particularly effective in preventing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 materials to form a transverse vault between the pallets.

   Near the bottom of the reaction chamber, an opening 61 is provided, the role of which is to allow the clusters of heavy particles of impurities such as ferro-silicon to be removed. This opening 61 is closed by a cover 62 which can be quickly detached.

   Means are preferably provided for indicating the temperature of the contents of the reaction chamber and of. gas produced. At 63, a thermometer is provided, the temperature-sensitive part of which is in contact with the interior of the reaction chamber at a point close to the bottom of this chamber. The temperature of the gas is indicated by a thermometer 64, the sensitive bulb of which penetrates the exhaust pipe 14 To prevent cooling and condensation of the moisture carried by the acetylene which may enter. In contact with the walls of the enlargement 12, of the conveyor 34 and of the reservoir 35 these walls may be lined with a layer of thermal insulation so that they are maintained at a temperature above the point of condensation.

   The apparatus of figure 1 operates as follows:
A charge of carbide, preferably in pieces, is placed in the hopper 17 and the lid 22 is sealed.

   We open register 20, for example by pulling the handle
21 outward, and the conveyor 16 is rotated at a constant speed. At the same time, the electric motor 57 is started to activate the agitator system. When carbide begins to enter reaction chamber 10, valve 25 is opened sufficiently to supply water at the proper rate. Carbide and

 the water reacts in the lower part of the chamber 10 and gives calcium hydrate which moves upwards, since the hydrate particles are lighter than the carbide particles. If the water supply is insufficient to effect the reaction of the amount of carbide introduced at the same time, there will be an accumulation of carbide at the bottom of the reaction chamber 10.

   The heavy carbide will obstruct the movement of the agitator vanes and it will take more energy to rotate the agitator paddles. The increase in absorbed driving force is indicated by the power meter 59 and notified to the operator. that the water supply must be increased. On the other hand, if too much water is added the contents of the reaction chamber become heavier and less fluid, so that the motive force required to turn the agitators increases again, which immediately indicates that it is necessary decrease the water supply. Observations of the temperature and moisture content of calcium hydrate indicate how to regulate the water supply, but these factors do not change until some time after a change in the amount of water supplied.

   When the reaction chamber 10 fills with hydrated lime, the latter reaches the level of the conduit 34 and the conveyor 37 can then be rotated to remove the hydrated lime produced. While the introduction of the carbide into the reaction chamber is taking place, this carbide falls rapidly through the hydrated lime and, therefore, tends to remove the excess moisture that this lime is likely to contain. Active contact between the carbide and water does not occur until the carbide has

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 not reached, in its fall, a point close to the bottom of the reaction chamber, where the maximum activity zone is located.

   The perfect agitation carried out by the vanes 40, 42 and 50 ensures a perfect intimate mixing of the water and the carbide, so that the hydrated lime which forms on the surface of each piece of carbide is immediately detached from it by the friction. to which it is subjected and is thus made free to rise in the room. As the reaction of the stirred carbide mass takes place, a mechanical separation takes place between the calcium hydrate and the carbide, the larger unreacted carbide particles sinking to the bottom of the generator, while fine hydrate particles accumulate at the top of the stirred mass.

   More heat develops in the reaction zone than can be dissipated in the form of sensible heat by removing the products of the reaction, by heating the materials introduced to the reaction temperature and by heating. heat loss from the surrounding environment. Therefore, to dissipate this excess heat, excess water is provided, preferably in the area where the amount of heat developed is maximum. This excess water absorbs a considerable amount of heat in passing from the liquid state to the vapor state, and the vapors generated escape with the gas.

   The volume of hot gas generated increases by the volume of water vapor, and the increased volume of gas and vapor rising through the material in the generator helps to separate the lighter particles from the lighter particles. heavy, besides that the water vapor tends to react with part of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 freshly introduced carbide during the descent of said carbide through the mass. The upward movement of hot gas and steam through the hydrated lime helps to keep the latter in a fluid state.

   By properly controlling the amounts of carbide and water introduced per unit time, a very finely divided calcium hydrate product can be obtained which floats on the surface of the stirred mass contained in the reaction chamber 10 and which is transferred. through line 34 to reservoir 34, from which it is withdrawn periodically when desired. The acetylene gas generated separates from the lime in the expansion 12, the role of the latter being to reduce the speed of the gas to a value low enough so that the fine hydrate particles are not entrained by the gas. The gas thus separates from the hydrate before appreciable cooling has taken place, so that moisture entrained by the gas is not likely to condense on the hydrate.

   On leaving the generator through line 14, the gas can pass through a dust separator such as a water scrubber, which removes traces of dust which it is liable to entrain therein, and can be cooled to normal temperature.

   The apparatus of Figure 2 is similar to that of Figure 1, but in this construction the carbide is introduced into the reaction chamber B 'near its bottom wall, the carbide feeder being generally indicated at A '. In this type of apparatus, the reaction chamber 370 is conical, its lower part having a smaller diameter than its upper part. This chamber shape ensures more efficient operation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 since the speed of the upward movement of the products decreases.

   The upper chamber 71 of this apparatus is constituted by a vessel with an open upper end provided with a bottom 72 which is crossed centrally by the reaction chamber 70, this bottom connecting to the outer walls of said chamber at a level located approximately at middle of the height of this room. This construction forms an annular lime collecting space or compartment 73 around the upper part of the reaction chamber.

   Near the upper end of this chamber, there is provided outside the tank 71 an annular chamber with an open upper end 74 which is closed at its lower end and welded to the outer walls of the tank 71. annular chamber 74 is disposed a hydraulic seal consisting of an annular chamber 76 which is closed at its base by a bottom 77 and welded to the outer walls of the chamber 74 The tank 71 is provided with a sheet metal cover 78 provided with an extension cylindrical lower 79 which descends into the chamber forming a hydraulic seal 76 to a point close to the bottom 77 of this chamber.

   The cover 78 is convex so that the moisture liable to condense on its central part can run off to the edges and flow into the water seal 76 The upper part of the water seal 76 is closed by a ring 80 which is welded to the upper edge of the gasket 76 and at the top of the cylindrical rim 79 An apron or baffle 81 surrounds the upper edge of the tank 71 to prevent the lime particles from falling into the annular chamber 74 The lower edge of the cylindrical wall 79 is serrated, as indicated in 82, for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

 ensure a regular distribution of the gas passing below the edge of this wall passing through the hydraulic seal.

  The hydraulic seal 76 thus constitutes an annular scrubber which washes the gas generated, this scrubber being integral with the apparatus.

   In this apparatus construction, the agitating mechanism is also provided with parts which rotate in opposite directions. However, in this case, the outer hollow shaft 83, instead of passing through the reaction chamber, ends just below the bottom 84 of the reaction chamber 70 At its upper end, the shaft 83 is connected to the central hub d 'a cross member 85 whose outer ends are fixed to the two non-parallel uprights 86 of the main frame of the agitator, this frame being shown more clearly in FIG. 4. A series of spaced ties 87, parallel to the cross member 85 are also provided, these crosspieces bracing the uprights 86.

   These are arranged so that they closely follow the conical wall of the reaction chamber 70, and their upper ends, which project slightly above the upper edge of this chamber, are connected to each other by a fairly long horizontal cross member 88. to end very close to diametrically opposed parts of the wall of the tank 71 At the ends of the cross member 88 are respectively fixed two vertical scraper bars 89. These bars follow very closely the cylindrical wall of the tank 71 to prevent lime from spreading. 'adhere to this wall.

   The bars or scrapers 89 protrude slightly above the edge of the tank 71 and are connected to each other by an upper cross member 90, the ends of which end slightly below the wall

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 cylindrical 79 As can be seen from Figure 4, the members 88, 89 and 90 are held in the desired relative positions by two cross members 91 and 92, the ends of which are welded to the cross members 88 and 90 The various spacers 85, 87, 88 and 90 are each provided with a hollow hub at their central part. These hubs have bores with the aid of which they turn idle on a shaft 93 which rises vertically along the axis of the generator.

   Scrapes used to agitate the lime which accumulates in the annular chamber 73 are formed by hanging bars 94 whose lower ends are connected to the lower ends of the scrapers 89 by spacers 95 and whose upper ends are welded to the cross member. 88 A device is also provided for agitating the water from the washer hydraulic seal 76 This device comprises two pairs of vertical bars 96 fixed respectively to the ends of the cross member 90, their lower ends being fixed to a doctor blade 97 which follows very closely the bottom 77 of the hydraulic seal.

   The hollow shaft 83 passes through a stuffing box 98 mounted in the bottom 84 of the reaction chamber. On the part of the shaft 83 which protrudes below the bottom 84 is wedged an angle pinion 99 meshing with one of the elements of a pair of angle pinions 100 mounted on the receiving shaft 101 of a speed reducer 102. The long vertical inner shaft 3 is journalled by its lower end in a slider 103 mounted in the bottom of a gearbox 104 entirely enveloping the angle gears, this box being fixed to the bottom 84.

   Another 105 angle pinion is wedged on the shaft 93 and meshes with the second

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 pinions 100, so that the shaft 93 can be driven in the opposite direction to the shaft 83 and, preferably, at a somewhat higher speed. On the part of the shaft 93 which passes through the reaction chamber 70 are mounted a series of vanes 106, at points situated between the cross members 87. The pallets 106 and the cross members forming the pallets 87 can both be arranged in the same manner. so as to urge the materials being stirred either upward or downward, to ensure more perfect agitation of said materials.

  It is generally preferable that these members exert an upward thrust on the materials, so as to avoid the settling of the latter and to maintain them in a more loose state. To the shaft 93 is also fixed, above the hub of the cross member 88, a collar 107 which prevents said hub from moving upwards; and two collars 108 are also provided on either side of the hub of the cross member 90 The shaft 93 is journalled by its upper end in a bearing 109 mounted in the cover 78 The upper end of the shaft 93 also has a narrowed portion 110 which passes through a stuffing box located at the upper part of the bearing, its projecting end being provided with a bar 111 which is intended to ring a bell 112 twice per revolution of the interior paddle assembly.

   The role of this bell is to indicate to a supervisor that the paddle assembly is turning properly. Another alarm bell is provided to indicate that the paddle assembly carrying the scraper 97 of the washer is functioning properly. To this end, one of the doctor blades 97 is provided with a vertical arm 113 intended to strike a hanging part of one of the ends of a bell shaft 114 so as to make the bell oscillate.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 mounted on the other end to ring it once per revolution of the doctor blade.

   The shaft 114 crosses horizontally a stuffing box mounted in the cylindrical outer wall of the washer 76
The carbide is introduced at a point close to the bottom 84 of the reaction chamber 70 using a conveyor 115 which works inside a housing 116 opening at one of its ends into said chamber and connected by its other end to the exhaust port 117 of a carbide hopper 118. The port 117 is controlled by a shutter such as a sliding register 119. A second carbide feed hopper 120 is disposed above it. of the hopper 118. The conduit connecting the two hoppers 118 and 120 contains a second shutter 121. The hopper 120 is hermetically sealed by a cover 122.

   The conveyor shaft 115 passes through a stuffing box 124 mounted in the end of the housing 116 and journals at its outer end in an upper bushing supported by a bearing housing 125. A pinion 126 is mounted on the shaft 123 between the shaft. bearing 125 and the stuffing box 124. This pinion is actuated by an intermediate pinion 127 mounted on an intermediate shaft 128. The pinion 127 is itself driven by a pinion 129 mounted on the shaft 101. The intermediate shaft 128 is supported at its ends by a bearing body pad 125 and by a pendant chair 130 fixed to the lower part of the housing 116.

   Another intermediate pinion 131, larger than pinion 127, is mounted on shaft 128, and a corresponding smaller pinion 132 is mounted on shaft 101 so that it can be moved to engage it. the pinion 131 or the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 20>

 The pinion 129 can also be moved on the shaft 101, so that the intermediate shaft 128 can be driven either by the pinion 129 or by the pinion 132. Like the pinions 129 and 132 have different diameters, the shaft 128 and the conveyor 115 will be driven at different speeds, depending on the gear ratio chosen.

   It is thus possible to modify the quantity of carbideintr Arabia per unit of time in order to vary the quantity of gas generated per unit of time.

   The shaft 101 passes through the lower bearing of the bearing housing 125 and is connected to the receiving shaft of the speed reducer 102 which is actuated by the electric motor 57 A stuffing box 133 is provided at the point where the shaft 101 passes through the gearbox 104, which can thus be kept substantially full of gear lubricant. This stuffing box also tends to prevent material from leaving the reaction chamber through seal 98
Since some kinds of commercial calcium carbides are relatively impure and contain heavy impurities, such as silicon carbide, ferrosilicon, and iron and aluminum oxides, a device has been provided to remove these impurities.

   The elimination of the impurities liable to accumulate at the bottom of the reaction chamber 70 is carried out using a valve device 134. This device comprises a cylindrical bore made in the bottom 84 and in which a sleeve is fitted. rotary 135 The bore has an opening 136 communicating with the chamber 70 and the sleeve 135 has in its wall a corresponding opening 137 which can be brought into coincidence with the opening 136 to allow

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

 be to the heavy particles which accumulate at the bottom of the chamber 70 to be swept by the cross member or doctor blade 85 so that they fall through the openings 136 and 137 into the inner chamber of the socket 135 When the socket has been filled with these particles,

   it is rotated so as to close the opening of the chamber 70 and the cover 138 can then be removed and the impurities removed from the interior of the socket without losing any material from the chamber 70 A handle 139 is used to rotate the socket 135 while the cover 138 is closed.

   The substantially dry residue which accumulates in the annular compartment 73 is driven in a circular fashion by the arms 95 so that it falls through an opening 140 provided in the bottom zg of the tank 71 A collecting chamber 141 is arranged immediately below of the opening 140 to receive the residue. The lower end of this chamber communicates with a conveyor 142 which discharges the hydrated lime accumulating in the chamber 141 and deposits it in a storage hopper, not shown. To prevent gas from escaping through opening 140, chamber 141 and conveyor 142, a seal of solid particles is maintained in chamber 141. This seal is formed by a mass of dry hydrate retained in the lower part. from the room.

   To make it possible to realize the quantity of residue collected in the chamber 141, there is provided an indicating device established in the form of a rod 143 carrying a disc 144 at its lower end and a handle 145 at its upper end. This rod passes through the upper wall of the chamber 141 through a gland 146 and, by making it rise and fall, it is possible to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

 easily determine the level of lime in the chamber.

  The operation of the conveyor 142 is regulated so that there remains constantly in the lower part of the chamber 141 a supply of lime which ensures the hermeticity.

   The water necessary for the reaction and for the absorption of excess heat is introduced at points 147 adjacent to the lower wall of the reaction chamber 70 The quantity of water introduced per unit time can be determined. using a flow meter comprising an orifice 26 and a pressure gauge 27 as shown in FIG. 1, or using any device suitable for maintaining a constant and adjustable supply of water, such as, for example, a positive displacement pump whose operating speed can be adjusted. If desired, the water intended to initially wet the carbide admitted into the reaction chamber can be introduced through the conduit 148 opening into the casing 116 of the conveyor.

   Additional water is introduced into the hydraulic seal 76 through a pipe 149 opening through the cover 80 of the seal. The excess water normally leaves the joint through a gas exhaust pipe 150 opening into the outer wall of said joint at a desired point on this wall. This overflow water flows through a pipe 150 until it arrives at a drain pipe descending from said pipe or at any desired water separating device.

   The annular chamber 74 is provided so that the water liable to be brought back by an accidental return of the gas through this scrubber is collected by said chamber instead of being introduced into the tank 71. to reach chamber 74 a drain pipe 151 is provided

 <Desc / Clms Page number 23>

 opening into the lower part of said chamber and descending into a hydraulic seal 152. The depth of the seal 152 is sufficient to ensure a charge height greater than the normal pressure of the gas in the generator.

  The hydraulic seal 152 is provided with an overflow 153 and a vent 154, both opening into the upper part of said seal.

   The operation of the apparatus of Figure 2 is analogous to that of Figure 1. However, in this construction, calcium carbide can be used in any form, i.e. in the form of pieces, dust or anything, the maximum size of the pieces being limited to that which can be transported by the feed device. The very fine particles of carbide introduced into the reaction chamber 70 are heavier than calcium hydrate and therefore tend to remain in the chamber to be converted into acetylene and hydrate. Of course, the larger particles settle faster and stay in the chamber at lower levels where there is a greater amount of moisture for their reaction.

   The carbide is introduced into the chamber 70 by a conveyor 115 with a substantially constant flow rate determined by the selected transmission ratio of the gears 127 and 129; or 131 and 132. The water is introduced at a constant rate which is regulated according to the temperature and the moisture content of the lime product. This flow must be kept constant despite the variations likely to occur in the back pressure prevailing at the water inlet ports under the influence of a push of the particles against

 <Desc / Clms Page number 24>

 these orifices.

   It is therefore preferable to provide several such inlet ports, and to maintain the flow rate constant, water from a high pressure water source can be supplied and a differential pressure regulator inserted into the flow. piping or use a positive displacement pump with adjustable speed or volumetric displacement. A portion of the water used to initially wet the carbide may be introduced into the conveyor 116 if desired, this water entering through the inlet pipe 148 or just where the carbide enters the chamber. reaction.

   The rotation of the vane devices keeps the mass of carbide and hydrate in the reaction chamber perfectly agitated, while the gas and vapor, rising, assist the agitation and tend to make the hydrate more fluid. . The carbide particles remain in the chamber 70 until they have reacted, but the hydrate pours over the top of this chamber and falls into the annular compartment 73 where it is agitated and driven in a circular fashion by the scrapers which force it to fall through the opening 140 in the hopper 141 with a flow rate such that there remains at the bottom of this hopper a mass of hydrate preventing the gas from escaping through the conveyor.

  Any other device could be used to provide a gas tight seal while the hydrate is being removed. The calcium hydrate may be kept stirred for an additional time in compartment 73, if desired, by providing the hydrate outlet in the side wall 71 instead of providing it in the wall. lower than the location of the orifice 140. A

 <Desc / Clms Page number 25>

 such additional agitation will tend to give a more uniform product.

   The acetylene and water vapor escape from the upper part of the reaction chamber and enter the relatively large space formed above by the vessel 71 and the cover 78 In this space, the speed of the current gas is reduced so that the finest hydrate particles settle and the gas escapes passing over the upper edge of the vessel 71, down between the cylindrical wall 79 and the wall 74 of the chamber and rising through the water contained in the space between said wall 79 and the hydraulic seal 76 The serrated parts 82 force the gas to pass in the form of very small bubbles which ensure perfect contact of this gas with the gas. water from the hydraulic seal,

   which has the effect of removing the last traces of hydrate and cooling the gas to a desired temperature. A significant part of the vapor entrained by the gas condenses and escapes with the overflow water from the hydraulic seal.

   To start the generator, the engine 57 is started admits water through the intake port 149 inside the scrubber and opens the carbide damper 119.

  When the carbide enters chamber 70, the water inlet is started. To stop the generator, we first close the carbide damper 119, continue to let the water penetrate for a certain time, then cut off the water supply and keep the paddles in rotation for an additional time to ensure distribution. and regular dispersion of moisture. We can then leave the generator at rest for some time without running the risk

 <Desc / Clms Page number 26>

 that the lime will agglomerate as a solid mass in the reaction chamber.

   It has been found that when the water supply is properly adjusted in accordance with the carbide supply and the degree of agitation, the maximum temperature reached in the reaction zone of the chamber 70 can be maintained at a safe value such as 'There is no polymerization of acetylene or discoloration of the hydrate.

  For example, it has been found to be advantageous to operate the present apparatus such that the temperature of the outer wall of the reaction chamber is maintained in the vicinity of 121 ° C.

   By carrying out the present method and operating the present apparatus as described, there has been obtained. a hydrated lime product having a residual moisture content of about 3% when the ratio of 1 kg of water per kg of carbide was maintained. This ratio varies slightly depending on the purity of the carbide used. This moisture content is that desired for commercial hydrates of lime, since it is with this content that the material handling properties are best. It can therefore be seen that the present process makes it possible to manufacture relatively large quantities of acetylene from the carbide and at the same time obtain, as a by-product, a hydrated lime of high quality and industrially useful.
