<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF PATENT OF INVENTION Liquid heater.
The invention relates to a backflow prevention device for gas-heated liquid heaters, the burnt gases of which are discharged to the chimney through a pipe. In the event of draft disturbances in the chimney, which cause backflow of the burnt gases., The known backflow preventers have the task of keeping the burnt gases away from the combustion chamber, in order to prevent the burner flames from being smothered. and incomplete combustion of the gas.
Backflow preventers are generally constituted by covering the liquid heater with a flue gas hood flaring conically from top to bottom, open below to the room where the liquid heater is installed and connected to the pipe to gas

burns leading to the chimney, and by fitting in this hood an impact plate placed a little above the opening of the combustion chamber. The rising burnt gases bypass this impact plate to get to the chimney.
The discharged gases, on the other hand, are deflected outwards by the impact plate, so that they go into the open air through the lower opening of the flue gas hood, without being able to pass from up and down in the firebox.
With these anti-backflow safeguards a drawback has been observed which manifests itself in particular with wall liquid heaters having a round section or not tightly applied against the wall for other reasons. Indeed, with these devices, the part of the exhausted burnt gases, deflected backwards by the impact plate, descends into the space between the liquid heater and the wall to which it is hung and partially returns. to the burner through the openings on the lower edge of the appliance for the combustion air.
This naturally hinders combustion and partially neutralizes the effect of the backflow preventer.
According to the invention, this drawback is obviated by further mounting the impact plate which deflects from the combustion chamber the gas stream discharged from the upper outlet opening for the burnt gases, yet another deflecting surface which impart to the flow of discharged gases deflected backwards by the impact plate a change of direction such that it cannot reach the space between the liquid heater and the wall from which it is hung.
Preferably, the deflecting surface is given the shape of a chevron and it is placed, for example, a little below the impact plate inside the discharge hood. However, one could also produce the desired change of direction by lining the impact plate, on its turned part.

towards the wall, with an appropriately shaped tongue, or obtain the change of direction in a similar manner.
The appended drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the invention. In the drawing
Fig. 1 is a side view of a. liquid heater attached to the wall, and
Fig. 2 is a section along line II-II, parallel to the wall.
When the draft is normal, the flue gases rising from the combustion chamber of the liquid heater 10 bypass the impact plate 11 into the flue gas pipe 12 leading to the chimney. In the event of a "discharge", on the contrary, the burnt gases drawn back from the chimney meet the impact plate 11 and the latter distributes them uniformly in all directions. The part of the burnt gases deflected backwards then meets the deflecting surface 13 in the form of a chevron and is deflected by the latter on either side so as to be unable to reach the space between the heater. -liquid 10 and pure 14 from which the heater is hung.
Rather, the burnt gases are evacuated out of the liquid heater in the room where it is installed.
