Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Lorsque

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Process for preparing explosive oils that are difficult to freeze
It is known to make it difficult to freeze pure glycerin trinitrate by adding it to other substances capable of lowering the freezing point without too greatly reducing its explosive power. Such additional substances are, for example, nitrated glycerol acetates, nitrated glycerol formates or nitrated polyglycerins.

   However, it has been found that it is possible in a very simple manner to prepare explosive oils which are difficult to freeze by nitrate the products of the action of salts of organic acids on epichlorohydrin.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Suitable carboxylic acids, the salts of which can be reacted with epichlorohydrin, are in particular the lower aliphatic carboxylic acids, for example formic acid and acetic acid. Higher molecular weight carboxylic acids can also be employed, for example nitro-benzene-carboxylic acid, as long as they do not too greatly reduce the explosive power of the final substances.

   The reaction is preferably carried out by first heating the epichlorohydrin in a suitable solvent, for example water or alcohol, with a sodium salt of the carboxylic acid. The products thus obtained, which are for the most part constituted by mixtures of monacylated derivatives of glycerin, with glycides, glycerin itself and polymers, are easy to collect by evaporation of the solvent after removal of the metal chlorides formed. It is then possible, in general without further purification, to nitrate them by treatment with nitric acid, usefully in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid.

  EXAMPLE
Into a boiling solution of 98.2 parts by weight of anhydrous potassium acetate in 120 parts by weight of methanol slowly introduce 92.2 parts by weight of epichlorohydrin. Then follow heating at the boiling temperature for a further two hours Lower the temperature of the reaction mixture to 0 ° C., leave it to stand for some time and isolate it by filtering off the potassium chloride which has deposited. By distillation of the filtrate under reduced pressure in order to remove it. expelling the methanol gives a clear viscous product Introduce it into 600 parts by weight of a nitration acid containing 1 part of nitric acid with a density of 1.5 2 parts of sulfuric acid with a density of 1.84.

   When

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the nitration is finished isolating the oily reaction mixture from the mixed acid, then washing it with water and a dilute aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. The product thus obtained is remarkably suitable as an explosive oil and is distinguished by its difficult to freeze character.
