de .4-dihydroxy-be.nzène.

The Applicant has found that said imino-thiocarbonates of poly-hydroxylated aromatic compounds are obtained if a poly-hydroxylated aromatic compound in which there is an ortho position is treated with a sulphocyanin agent in which there is an ortho position relative to one of the agents. hydroxyls, which is free and lends itself particularly well to substitution, and which neutralizes the sulphocyanic acid formed during the reaction. The process is preferably carried out in aqueous solution; but other solvents can also be used.
Among the sulphocyanin-yielding agents, mention will especially be made of cupric sulphocyanide. This cupric sulfo-cyanide can be produced in the reaction solution itself, by reacting a cupric salt with the sulfo-cyanide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal such as Ca (SCN). As poly-hydroxylic compounds, mention will be made of. poly6-hydroxylated derivatives of the benzene and naphthalene series which may contain, as substituents, for example halogen atoms, alkyls or aryls; suitable for this reason are, for example, resorcinol, cresorcinol, orcin, phloroglucin, di-hydroxy-naphthalenes and the like.
Polyhydroxy compounds can additionally be substituted with etherified hydroxyl groups such as alkoxyl groups. Compounds which lend themselves to the practice of the present invention are, for example, 1.3-dihydroxy-5-ethoxybenzene, 1.3-dihydroxy-6-methoxybenzene or 1.4-dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzene. It is only necessary that these compounds exhibit an ortho position, with respect to one of the hydroxyl groups, which is free and which lends itself particularly well to substitution, so that the sulfo-cyane attaches to this place. of the molecule.
As soon as the sulfo-cyanic acid, which forms as a sub-

product, ring cyclization occurs with formation of imino-thiocarbonate. If the acid solutions of these imino-thiocarbonates are subjected to heating, the thio-carbonates free of nitrogen can be obtained. Imino-thiocarbonates or thiocarbonates of polyhydroxy compounds belonging to the benzeric or naphthalene series constitute new products which can very well be used as intermediates in the manufacture of medicaments, dyes and the like. As for imino-thiocarbonates, they also lend themselves very well, for example, to be used as azo components in diazotype.
EXAMPLES:
1) At laboratory temperature, 40 g are added. of potassium sulfo-cyanide in 50 cc of water, stirring, to a solution of 11 gr. of resorcinol and 50 gr. of copper sulfate, crystalline, in 250 cm3 of water. The cupric sulfo-cyanide which forms becomes colorless after a short time, which means that the introduction of the sulfo-cyane is complete. The cuprous sulfocyanide is removed by suction filtering, the residue is washed with water and the filtered solution of 50 cm3 of twice normal sodium carbonate solution is added, whereby the imino-thiocarbonate resorcinol separates out as a colorless crystalline body.
The yield amounts to 16 gr. The new compound which melts at a temperature of 149 dissolves very easily in many organic solvents and in mineral acids. It forms well-defined salts. If 1 (the compound is subjected to heating in the presence of a dilute acid, the nitrogen-free thiocarbonate separates, on cooling, in the form of crystals very well.

defined. This compound melts at 158; it can easily be saponified by means of an alkali so as to form the sulphide

of .4-dihydroxy-be.nzene.
2) We take a solution of 16.2 gr. of crystallized phloroglucin and 36 gr. 90% sodium sulfo-cyanide in 100 cm3 of water and to it is added, at ordinary temperature, 50 gr. of copper sulphate crystallized in 100 cm3 of water, while stirring. The cupric sulfo-cyanide, which formed on the first, becomes colorless almost instantly, which proves that the introduction of the sulfo-cyane took place very quickly. The solution is freed from the cuprous sulfocyanide and then the sulfo-cyanic acid is neutralized by means of a solution of sodium carbonate twice.
EMI4.2
normal, whereby the imino-thiocarbonate of the phloroglucin separates. Any excess of sodium carbonate must be avoided since such an excess will cause further dissolution.
The new product thus obtained dissolves very easily in dilute acids; its hydrochloride forms well-defined crystals. If the acidic solution of the product is subjected to short heating, the iminogen radical is removed and nitrogen-free thiocarbonate is formed which, on cooling, crystallizes in the form of long needles. It melts at 181 C.
3.) Mix, while stirring, 12.6 gr. of anhydrous phloroglucin, 50 cm of alcohol and 40 gr. of cupric sulfo-cyanide. The copper salt, which has a black color, discolors immediately so as to form the copper salt, which means that the reaction is complete. The cuprous sulfo-cyanide is removed by suction filtering and the filtered solution of 45 cm3 of a twice normal sodium carbonate solution is added; the imino-thiocarbonate is then separated from the phloroglucin by cooling and grat-

floor. The product is filtered off with suction, washed with water and, using hydrochloric acid, converted to the colorless hydrochloride. The yield is very good.
4) Mix, while stirring, 12.4 gr. of anhydrous orcine, 40 gr. of cupric sulfo-cyanate and 70 cm3 of methanol. As soon as the discoloration is complete, the cuprous sulpho-cyanate is removed by suction filtering and the imino-thiocarbonate of orcine is precipitated by adding to the filtrate a twice normal sodium carbonate solution, at the same rate. of 50 cm3. If the product is recrystallized from alcohol, it turns brown on heating and then melts at a temperature of 174 - 175. By heating the product for a short time in the presence of an acid, the nitrogen-free thiocarbonate is obtained which melts at 140.
5) In 100 cm3 of 50% alcohol, 12.4 gr is dissolved. 2,6-dibydroxy-toluene and the solution thus obtained of a mixture of 50 gr. of copper sulphate crystallized in 100 cm3 of water and 36 gr. of sodium sulfo-cyanide (90%) in 50 cm3 of water. As soon as the discoloration has occurred, the whole is filtered off by suction and then the 2,6-dihydroxy-toluene imino-thiocarbonate is precipitated by adding to the filtrate a dilute solution of caustic soda. The product thus obtained dissolves easily in mineral acids and forms well-characterized salts.
6) In 250 cm3 of water, dissolve 14.5 gr. of 1-chloro-2.4-dihydroxybenzen and 50 gr. of crystallized copper sulphate and the solution thus obtained of 40 gr. of potassium sulfocyanide in 50 cm3 of water while stirring. Discoloration: occurs immediately. 1-Chlor-2.4-dihydroxybenzene imino-thiocarbonate melts at 172, while the body
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
obtained by elimination of the iminogenic group melts at a temperature of 159.
7) In 100 cm3 of alcohol, 16 gr is dissolved. of 2.3-dibydroxy-naphthalene and the whole is mixed, while stirring, with 40 gr. - cupric sulfo-cyanide. Desque all of the cupric salt is transformed into the cuprous salt, the whole is filtered and then the 2.3-dibydroxynaphthalene imino-thiocarbonate is precipitated by means of a sodium carbonate solution. The product thus obtained melts at a temperature of 180 - 181; its hydrochloride is poorly soluble. If this salt is subjected to heating in the presence of water, the thiocarbonate melting at 199 immediately separates.
In order to carry out the same reaction, one can use, for example, 2,7-dihydroxy-naphthalene.
