Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

   Lorsqu'on veut directement utiliser l'indication de distance obtenue pour commander les   correctionscorres-/;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

   Range finder and shot correction device.

   The present invention relates to a device making it possible, by direct sighting, to assess, in a particularly simple and yet sufficiently precise manner from a practical point of view, the distance at which an object is located, the dimensions of which are known.

   The device in question is, of course, capable of being used in all cases where an approximate appreciation of the distance may be necessary while still being sufficient, but it is especially interesting for adjustment and correction. shots for which it is necessary, in aiming the weapon, to take into account the degree of distance from the goal.

   In particular, it is extremely advantageous

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 in the case of shots against airplanes carried out from a. other plane.

   It can in fact, in accordance with what will be indicated in detail below, be fitted out and be combined with any other suitable complementary shooting adjustment devices, so that the assessment of the distance to the goal does not complicate. in any way the operations of the shooter, and that the data obtained with regard to the distance to the goal, can, without any additional operation, be directly and automatically used for the preparation and application of the corrections to be introduced in the scoring .

   The invention consists first of all essentially in disposing in the focal plane of a clear viewfinder of a well-known type, instead of and in place of the usual reticle, an iris diaphragm, of which a suitable control makes it possible to vary. read the aperture at will, so that the image of the latter in the viewfinder glass can be brought to exactly outline the apparent contour of the object observed.

   The invention further relates to the development and possible additional calibration of the aforementioned control, first of all with a view to adapting the latter to each of the different purposes that may be called upon to take into account. consideration (different types of aircraft for example), and, secondly, so that said command can, as desired, either simply provide the indication of the distance to be assessed, in which case the opening variations of the diaphragm will simply play, in a way, the role of a stadimetric scale, the same scale adapting itself by calibration to each type of goal to be considered, that is, better still, to introduce, as has been said above. , directly and automatically the distance data obtained,

   in the auxiliary aiming correction mechanism by means of which the shot is adjusted.

   For the latter case, the invention aims subsidiary

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 ment an iris aperture variation control device, comprising an adaptation lever of such shape that a same angular displacement of the correction control lever (which can be operated directly by the observer), causes , for each of the different goals in the presence of which one may find oneself, a variation in the aperture of the diaphragm, the origin and amplitude of which correspond, depending on the dimensions of the goal considered, to the common firing zone that 200m to 600m have been chosen, for example, that is to say that the operation of the correction control lever having the consequence, in the case of a target aircraft of wingspan A, a variation of opening. re of the diaphragm going from M to N,

   when the airplane passes from the distance 600m to the distance 200m, the same maneuver of said correction control lever will result, for the same change of distance from 600m to 200m of a target airplane of wingspan a, a variation in aperture of the diaphragm going from p to q, p being different from M, and q - p being smaller than N - M if q is smaller than A, or larger if a is larger than A .

   Finally, the invention aims, as a possible additional combination, that which, in the case where it is desired to leave the weapon fixed relative to the fuselage of the aircraft, makes it possible to carry out the firing adjustment in such a manner. known, by displacement of the line of sight, although we no longer have the usual means employed for this purpose, namely, the displacement of the reticle in its own plane.

   The further combination in question is to make the very objective of the sight clear movable in its own plane, whereby the pointing parallax can, with the aid of a suitable control connecting the objective to the mechanism of sighting. correction, be corrected and adjusted in the same way as in the known case where it is the reticle which is mobile.

  In the accompanying drawing, there is shown by way of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 example, and hereinafter a particular embodiment of the invention has been described, but it goes without saying that this embodiment could be modified in its details of execution or could be supplemented by any useful accessory device, without departing from the scope of the invention.

   In this drawing, Figure 1 shows an elevational view of the entire device.

   Figure 2 shows a section taken along II-II of Figure 1.

   Figures 3, 4 and 5 show three plan views, with partial section along III-III of Figure 2, said views all three corresponding to the case of firing on a medium-sized aircraft, and indicating the positions. control and adaptation devices, respectively: in the case of a firing distance close to the average, in the case of the maximum firing distance envisaged, and finally, in the case of the minimum distance range envisaged, all these distances can also be chosen arbitrarily, and the apparatus calibrated accordingly.

   Figures 6 and 7 diagrammatically represent the images seen by the observer through the sight glass, respectively, the first, in the case of a medium-sized airplane, located at the firing distance. low envisaged, the second, in the case of the same medium-span airplane, located at the maximum planned firing distance, the image seen by the observer in the same case of a medium-span airplane, located at a shooting distance close to the average, being indicated in figure 1.

  Figures 8 and 9 show two side views

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 plan, intended to make it possible to understand how the control mechanism used makes it possible to adapt the device to various purposes (airplanes for example), of different dimensions.

   As can be seen in this drawing, and more particularly in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the device shown is essentially constituted by a clear sight comprising, as usual, a collimator body in two parts, 1 , la, on which are arranged: the usual light second, the light source 3 (electric bulb for example), and the objective 5 (the latter being able, in accordance with what will be indicated below, to be mounted and arranged so as to be able to be moved in its plane, that is to say perpendicular to its axis).

   But, in the present case, the clear viewfinder in question further comprises, arranged in the focal plane of its lens 5, instead of the usual reticle, an iris diaphragm 4 which, according to the usual technique, is constituted by a a certain number of lamellae 6, suitably articulated inside an annular mount 6, (in this case integral with element la of the collimator body) and subjected to the action of a ring order 7.

   The drive lug of the latter itself protrudes through the annular frame 6, which is for this purpose suitably perforated at 6b and engages in a notch 8 of a control and adaptation lever. 9, which is mounted, by means of a circular yoke 9a, on the element 1a of the collimator body around which it has, as a result, the ability to rotate by driving with it the control ring 7, and by causing, depending on its direction of rotation, the opening or closing of the diaphragm.

   On the element 1 of the collimator body, is also fixed, according to the usual technique, the glass

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 clear with parallel faces 10.

   For reasons which will be indicated later, the adaptation lever 9 is not controlled directly, but is set in motion by means of a connecting rod 11 carrying: at one of its ends, a pin 19, by the intermediary of which it is articulated on the lever 9, and itself articulated, at its other end, on an axis 17 with which an operating lever 12 is provided, which is mounted and articulated on a support 14.

   The lever 12 comprises, as is appropriate, at one of its ends, an operating handle 12a, and, at its other end, an indicator needle 12b, which moves opposite a graduation 12c, drawn on the- said support 14.

   The holder 14 and the element 1 of the collimator body of the clear sight are both fixed on a common frame 20.

   In order to limit in a desired way the zone of use of the apparatus, there are provided on the support 14 of the stops 15 and 16, which prevent the lever 12 from going beyond the extreme positions which are therefor. imposed.

   A simple inspection of Figures 1, 3, 4 and 5, on the one hand, and additional Figures 6 and 7, on the other hand, we realize that, depending on the position that we are obliged to give to the lever 12 so that the latter, by means of the connecting rod 11 and of the adaptation lever 9, imposes on the iris diaphragm 4 an opening such as the image of this opening, seen by the observer at the inferior nor through the clear ice 10, precisely circumscribing the targeted goal (plane for example), the degree of distance from the goal in question will be immediately determined, at least sufficiently close for the usual practice of shooting. adaptation of the device

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 to the observation of a certain number of objects (planes) of different dimensions,

   a certain number of coupling holes 18 are provided on the lever 9, in each of which it is possible, at will, by means of the operating button 19a which ends it at its upper end, to introduce the end lower 19b of the articulation axis 19 of the connecting rod 11, and said adaptation lever 9 has also been given a shape such that at the same total displacement of the operating lever 12 between its two stops of stop 15, 16, correspond to the starting points of opening and different amplitudes of opening of the diaphragm, each adapted to each of the different purposes (airplanes) in the presence of which it is expected that one could find oneself.

   We know, in fact, that for the same variation in distance, the variation in the angle at which an object is seen is determined according to a simple law, which is a function of the dimensions of said object.

   If in fact we call D the real diameter of the object, and L its distance, its apparent diameter will be: d = D and, consequently, the diameter of the opening to be given to the diaphragm will be given by the formula: where k is a coefficient easy to determine as a function of the optical elements of the device.

   The shape of the adaptation lever 9 is also easy to determine, with the aid of a simple sketch, as a function of the dimensions of the objects which are to be taken into consideration.

   Of course, only the useful part of said lever, from the point of view of adaptation, is the curved part, that is to say part 9, along which are practiced.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 only holes 18.

   The elbow connection 9c, which connects the part 9b to the yoke 9a, is intended to take into account the fact that in practice, the orifice of an iris diaphragm, such as these are manufactured industrially, cannot be re-routed. to absolute zero.

   The use of the adaptation device which has just been indicated and the result obtained are easy to understand by examining Figures 8 and 9.

   If one is in the presence of the smallest of envisaged goals, one will have, in accordance with what is indicated in figure 8, the axis 19 of the connecting rod 11 in the end hole 18a of the adaptation lever 9, and , when. the lever 12 passes from the position in which it is shown in solid lines to the position in which it is shown in phantom lines, bringing with it the connecting rod 11 and the adaptation lever 9, it causes a variation in the opening of the diaphragm 4, whose origin is close to the smallest opening of said diaphragm, and whose amplitude is relatively small, said variation corresponding to the law of approximation of the considered goal.

   If, on the contrary, one finds oneself in the presence of the greatest of the goals which one has taken into consideration, one will introduce, in accordance with what is indicated in figure 9, the axis 19 of the connecting rod 11 in the hole 18b, which is closest to the sight, and, at the same time that we obtain a starting point of opening of the suitable diaphragm, different from those which corresponded to the other purposes, we will also obtain an amplitude of variation. tion of opening of the diaphragm much more considerable, and adapted to the law of variation of parallax of the considered goal, according to the degree of remoteness of the latter.

   When you want to directly use the distance indication obtained to control the corrected corrections- /;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   weighting, without even having to worry about the numerical value of this distance indication, the lever 12 is mounted and keyed on the shaft 13 of the automatic correction control mechanism, of which the support 14 can, for example, , build up the housing.

   Under these conditions, the operation of the lever 12 will directly cause the correction corresponding to the degree of distance from the intended goal.

   Finally, if necessary, a suitable displacement of the objective 5, displacement which can be caused by any suitable mechanism connecting the said objective in an appropriate manner to the correction mechanism, makes it possible to adjust the shot by deviating from the line of sight. sighted, the weapon being supposed to be fixed in relation to the aircraft cabin.

   A lateral translation of the lens allows the correction in direction; satranslation parallel to the line of sight allows the height correction to be made.

   We thus obtain, in total, a sighting and correction device which takes into account the distance of the goal in an extremely simple way, and without imposing on the user, whoever he is, observer or shooter. , or observer-shooter, if the two are combined in one and the same person, as is the case in single-seat airplanes, no extra effort of any kind.

   The action exerted by the pointer on a single lever, to ensure the exact inscription of the apparent image of the cut in the luminous circle seen through the clear sight, is sufficient in itself to obtain the image of the cut. both correct aim and correct shot correction, taking into account the distance to the goal.
