  Condensateur variable multiple.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

    @ La fig.' 1 est ime vue en coupe longitudinale d'un

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  Multiple variable capacitor.

   The present invention relates to a multiple variable capacitor., In particular a multiple capacitor with sliding armatures, capable of being used, for example, in a radio apparatus with a single adjustment knob. it has been observed that the adjustment of a multiple capacitor in which all the fixed electrodes or all the movable electrodes are carried by at least two supports substantially parallel to the shaft of the capacitor and fixed or journalled in a piece of rigid construction , for example a casing wall, is sometimes altered because the capacity of the various capacitors is subject to variations @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 differing from each other.

   This is particularly troublesome, because the various oscillating circuits of which the capacitors form part are thus out of tune.

   The object of the invention is to reduce or eliminate the mutual disagreements which occur in the above construction of the multiple capacitor. The invention is based on the recognition that mutual disagreements are due to temperature variations.

   According to the invention, the rigid construction parts in which the two supports are fixed or journalled and the bottom plates carried by the supports are made of materials having the same or substantially the same coefficient of expansion.

   In a multiple capacitor with sliding armatures the electrodes, preferably spiral, are each provided with a base plate and the base plates of the stationary electrodes are fixed to at least two supports arranged symmetrically with respect to the shaft of the capacitor and preferably made of ceramic material, supports which are fixed by at least one of their ends in a casing wall substantially perpendicular to the shaft of the capacitor; in such a capacitor, the base plates of the fixed electrodes and said wall or walls are made, according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, from materials having the same coefficient of expansion and, preferably, from the same metal.

   The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being of course part of it.

    @ Fig. ' 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 multiple capacitor with sliding armatures and fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line II-II of fig.l. Similar parts are designated in the two figures by the same reference numerals.

   In the embodiment shown, each of the capacitor electrodes 1, 2 ..... 6 is spiral and is attached to a bottom plate 11, 12 .... 16. The slide electrodes 2, 4 and 6 are wedged on a sliding shaft 7 which is journalled in centering steps welded to the bottom plates 11, 13 and 15 of the fixed electrodes 1, 3 and 5. The sliding shaft control means
7 are not shown in the figures, because they are irrelevant for the present invention. The bottom plates 11, 13 and 15 of the fixed electrodes 1, 3 and 5 are rigidly connected to the supports 8 and 9 which are arranged symmetrically with respect to the capacitor shaft and are made of low loss ceramic material.

   The supports 8 and 9 are welded by their ends in the walls 17 and 18 which form part of a casing 10 and are perpendicular to the shaft of the capacitor.

   If, as was hitherto common, the bottom plates of the electrodes which were made of copper or brass and the casing, including the walls 17 and 18, were made of sheet iron, the adjustment of the capacitors l ' one relative to the other would only be correct when the ambient temperature was exactly equal to the temperature at which the capacitor was set after manufacture. At other temperatures, the capacities of the various capacitors differ from each other. The cause is as follows:
As shown in fig. 1, the supports 8 and 9 are interconnected at various points by the two shoemaker walls 17 and 18 at points A, A 'and B, B' and, in addition,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 by the bottom plates 11, 13 and 15 of the fixed electrodes 1, 3 and 5 at points C, C; D, D ', and E, E'.

   To better understand the invention, it is assumed that after manufacture, the capacitance of the various capacitors has been set at an ambient temperature of, for example, 20 C at exactly identical values and that at this temperature, the supports are exactly parallel along their entire length.

  If the ambient temperature rises to 30 C (a temperature which is frequently seen in a radio apparatus in service) and if the coefficient of expansion of the backplates 11, 13 and 15 is equal to twice the coefficient of expansion of the walls of bootmaker 17 and 18, the increase in distances C-C ', D-D', EE 'will be double that of distances AA' and B-B '. While the supports were originally parallel, the distance between the central parts of the supports is now greater than the distance between the ends of the supports or, in other words, the supports show a curvature.

   It is, however, evident that the deformation which manifests itself is by no means limited to the supports because, as the free expansion of the bottom plates is hampered by the supports, the bottom plates are also subjected to forces which determine a deformation of the supports. bottom plates and, consequently, electrodes.

  The change in capacitance is due to the fact that the various bottom plates 11, 13 and 15 are subject to deformation forces of different magnitudes. As can be seen in FIG. 1, the bottom plate 11 is very close to the ends of the supports 8 and 9 fixed in the housing wall 17 and this bottom plate will therefore be influenced by the deformation forces in a more pronounced manner than the other bottom plates. Apart from this influence, it is easy to realize without further explanation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tion that the bottom plates 11, 13 and 15 are not deformed in the same way.

   In the construction shown, the center of the bottom plate 11 will be shifted to the right as a result of the deformation and thus determine, for example, a decrease in capacity, while the center of the bottom plate 15 undergoes a deformation. displacement to the left, so that there is an increase in capacitance of the capacitor considered.

   The mutual variation in capacitances is therefore due to the different expansion coefficients of the bottom plates 11, 13 and 15, of the fixed electrodes 1, 3 and 5 and of the housing walls 17 and 18.

   Particularly when the air gap existing between the two electrodes is less than 0.5 mm, for example equal to 0.2 mm, and the thickness of the electrodes is small, for example 0.1 mm, the deformation causes differences. not permissible even for temperature differences of 5 C.

   According to the invention, the aforementioned drawbacks are eliminated if the base plates of the fixed electrodes 11, 13 and 15 and the casing walls 17 and 18 in which the supports 8 and 9 are fixed are made of materials having the same coefficient of expansion, for example in the same metal. In this case, the described deformation can no longer occur, because the parts which extend between the supports then all undergo such a large expansion and the cause of the production of the deformation forces is therefore eliminated.

   It goes without saying that the invention is also of advantageous use if the supports are fixed only by one of their ends in a housing wall or in another piece of rigid construction.
