 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Process for the manufacture of semi-rigid lingerie pieces"

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of semi-rigid lingerie items, such as collars, cuffs, etc., capable of undergoing repeated washing and resuming after each washing and ironing their semi-rigid character.

   A process for the manufacture of semi-rigid lingerie items of the aforementioned type consists in principle, as is known, of joining together several, and in particular three layers of fabric by gluing by means of thermoplastic adhesive materials. This process is generally carried out by impregnating an interlayer or interlining fabric with the thermoplastic adhesive material, after which the various layers of fabric are cut into the desired shape, assembled by sewing and finally glued by the acLion de. pressure and heat.

   In order to give the lingerie pieces thus produced the desired stiffness, the interlayer fabrics must be impregnated with a sufficiently large quantity of adhesive material. Consequently, they themselves have a certain stiffness and hardness, which entails certain drawbacks. in the manufacture of such items of lingerie, and in particular that of making it difficult to sew the different layers of fabric as a result of the resistance

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 tance opposed by the intercalary tissues. To overcome this resistance, particularly strong needles are necessary, but also in this case the sewing requires a relatively long working time.

   Now, it has been found that these drawbacks can be overcome by adding to the adhesive materials used in the manufacture of semi-rigid lingerie items in accordance with the aforementioned process, water-soluble non-volatile softening agents and the lingerie items are subjected, after sewing, to a treatment with water so as to remove said softening agents therefrom. It is thus possible to give the interlayer fabrics the desired softness for the manufacture of lingerie items; removal of the softening agent, the finished lingerie items have the desired stiffness.

   As the materials of thermoplastic adhesives are considered in the practice of the present process, for example, polymerized esters of vinyl alcohol such as polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, mixed polymers from 'vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, in addition to polystyrene, polymers of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or derivatives of these acids, mixed polymers @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 or mixtures of polymers of such compounds etc.

   As softening agents suitable for the present process there may be mentioned, for example, polyvalent aliphatic alcohols or their derivatives such as glycerin, sorbite, mannite, propylene glycol, trimethylol-propane, monohydroxyethylglycerin, acetate ester. glycerin-tripolyglycolic ether, ethyl polyglycol or other ethyl-polyglycol or hydroxyalkylglyceric ethers. Mixtures of such specially compound softeners can also be used in order to achieve the desired degree of softness. Apart from the substances mentioned above, it is possible to add to the adhesive mixtures, according to known methods, still other water-insoluble softeners, in addition to pigments, dyestuffs, fillers etc.

   The following example will make it easier to understand how the present invention can be put into practice.

   An interlayer cotton fabric wet with water and squeezed until an increase in weight of 80-100% has been obtained is impregnated with a mixture of the following composition:
400 g of a mixed polymer from 70% vinyl acetate and 30% vinyl chloride,
80-120 g of acetic ester of glycerin-tripolyglycolic ether,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

40 g of a condensation product of diglycolic acid and 1.3-butylene glycol,
16 g of titanium dioxide,
650 cm3 of methylene chloride and a small amount of blue coloring matter.

  The mixture is preferably prepared in a fast running turbo-mixer. The fabric is coated on both sides until a coating of 60-100% dry substance (calculated on its original weight) is obtained. The fabric thus treated and dried if necessary at about 60 ° C. is cut into the desired shape and sewn with the top layers cut off. Then the whole is rinsed for about a quarter of an hour in water of 70-80 C, or washed at similar temperatures, whereby the water-soluble softening agent is largely removed. Then the part is hot pressed, preferably at temperatures between 120 and 160 C; this operation can be carried out in one of the usual presses for lingerie or with the iron.

   Instead of the acetic ester of glycerin-tripolyglycolic ether contained in the said mixture, it is also possible to use 80-120 g of ethyl polyglycol or a mixture prepared from

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 60 g of acetic ester of glycerin-tripolyglycolic ether with 60 g of monohydroxyethylglycerin or with 60 g of a mixture formed of 39% glycerin, 25% sorbite and mannite, 33% propylene glycol and 3 % water.

   On the other hand, it is also possible to employ as the water-soluble softener, for example, 80-100 g of di-3.3'-dihydroxybutyl ether, or the butylene glycol acetal of 3-hydroxybutyraldehyde etherified with 1.3-butylene glycol.

   The adhesive mixes can also be used, if desired, in the form of sheets which are inserted between the layers of fabric to be bonded.
