 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Device for fixing the rails to the sleepers.

   The present invention relates to a rail fastening device, in which the rail is pressed in a known manner by means of spring nails on the base plate or the cross member. These spring nails consist of attached spring steel ribbons and have a very long gooseneck shaped head to give the necessary elasticity. These nails must therefore be driven into the sleeper at a corresponding distance from the pation of the rail so that they can only be used in combination.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 with sufficiently long base plates. Many railroads which use simple studs or lag bolts have short base plates in which the holes for the rail fastening means are arranged immediately next to the rail shoe.

   For this reason, the use of long head spring nails is not possible with these short plates. To also allow the use of spring nails with these plates, the spring nail capable of turning, which has a relatively short head, has been devised. This rotatign nail, the lower part of the shank of which is cylindrical, is driven into the cross member only to below the head of the rail with the head parallel to the rail. Then the nail is turned until the head is perpendicular to the rail and it is driven in this position until its final place. The head of the rotating nail extends to the web of the rail. The length of the head is therefore limited to the minimum distance between the nail hole and Paros of the rail.

   This distance is not sufficient, however, to give a nail head made of two spring tapes the length necessary to obtain sufficient elasticity. To obtain this result, it is therefore necessary, in the case of the rotating nail, to fold back laterally as head only a spring-loaded tape and in addition the section of the tape must be taken smaller than would be admissible because of the other stresses. spring nail.

   The present patent relates to a solid nail and despite this very elastic, the dimensions of which are however dependent on the dimensions of the rail and the plate so that it is appli-cable also in the case of short plates. This is obtained according to the present invention by the fact that the elastic bands of the new nail are placed on the field and perpendicular to the rail. ba head, which would then normally extend parallel to the rail, is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 then folded laterally towards the rail until it is obliquely relative to the rail. The end of the head then covers the edge of the rail shoe with its full width.

   The appended drawing represents in detail the subject of the invention.

   Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a rail fixing device by means of spring nails with a head placed obliquely with respect to the rail.

   Fig. 2 is a side view of this rail fixing device.

   Fig. 3 rd is a plan view of the new rail fastener.

   The shank of the spring nail 1 is prismatic over its entire length and is driven in with the spring tapes placed in the field..and perpendicular to the rail 2 directly next to the rail shoe, through the holes in the short plate 3 , into the cross member 4. The head of the nail is bent sideways towards the rail 2 until the longitudinal axis of the head is at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the rail 8 and the end of the head covers the edge of the rail runner across its entire width.

  In order that the lower surface of the laterally bent head does not only bear a ridge on the rail shoe, the end of the head of the spring nail is twisted around the longitudinal axis of the nail so that the head end of the spring nail is twisted around the longitudinal axis of the nail. lower surface of the end of the head has the same inclination as the rail shoe (see fig. 2). The cross section of the spring nail 1 and the length of the head can therefore be chosen at will since they are not linked to determined dimensions. The dimensions of the nail as a whole can therefore be appropriate for the given conditions in the most advantageous manner.

   The head of the spring nail may have a shape

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 sufficiently long and thick and therefore advantageously consists of two spring tapes. one thus obtains great elasticity with great pressing force.

  Two spring loaded tapes also provide double safety against breakage compared to a single tape. In addition, the insertion of the new spring-loaded nail is greatly facilitated since it does not have to be turned any more. Its manufacture is also simpler than that of the rotating nail since the rounding of the nail shank disappears and the lateral folding of the head does not require any operation, because it can be carried out at the same time as the pressing of the form. of head. Fixing the rail on short plates by means of the new spring nails with head placed obliquely to the rail therefore offers advantages over the known fixing of the rail by means of rotating spring nails, both from the point of view technically than from an economic point of view.
