  Process for making wool non-shrink.

The methods, interesting from an industrial point of view, which aim to make the wool non-shrinkable, are based on the treatment of wool with chlorine. Chlorine acid solutions, for example, are allowed to act at a temperature of 25 to 30 on the pre-wetted material, or the material in the dry state is treated with chlorine gas. When this is done, it is possible to partially change the surface structure of the wool and to eliminate the tendency to felting the wool, but this procedure causes some damage to the fiber; in addition, the wool scorches strongly.

Recently, a method has been discovered for the treatment

ment of wool, in organic solvents, with sulfuryl chloride. In this way, effects similar to those of the process described above are achieved without inflicting significant damage on the fiber.

The Applicant has now found that lama can be treated, also without prejudice, and without having to resort to organic solvents, when, instead of using chlorine solutions, solutions of chlorine hydrate are used. chlorine.

A solution of chlorine hydrate (C12.8H20) is obtained in the simplest way by introducing chlorine into the water at a temperature below 8.

   E x e m p l e
Chlorine is introduced into water at 6 C until the active chlorine content rises to one gram per liter. with the aid of the chlorine hydrate solution thus obtained, the wool is treated for 15 to 20 minutes, well cleaned, at temperatures below 8 and observing, between the wool and the bath, a ratio of 1:20; then this wool is rinsed with water, at the same temperature, and it is finished in the usual way by treating it with bisulphite, etc. The wool thus treated does not scorch, it has the characteristic touch of silk and is non-shrinkable. Practically, 18 fiber is not damaged.
