Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

60 parties d'huile de poisson sulfonée;
37 parties du produit de graissage suivant l'in- vention ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Process for preparing leather lubricants. u during the synthesis of fatty acids by oxidation of paraffin in the presence of air, in the condensers adjoining the oxidation furnaces, the condensable volatile oxidation products are liquefied and a lower layer forms therein aqueous and an oily top layer. The top layer of the condensate, known as condenser oil, is made up of fatty acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and hydrocarbons.

   It cannot be used as is in whole or in part to replace leather lubricants because it reduces the stability of the emulsion of the quenching baths, reduces the absorption of fat by the leather and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 adversely affects the nature of the finished leather from the point of view of its body and feel. It also gives rise to difficulties in curdling. On the other hand, leathers have an unpleasant odor, which must be attributed to the presence of lower fatty acids.

   Now, it has been discovered that it is possible to obtain leather lubricants of excellent use by adding to the usual products certain fractions of condenser oil, that is to say of oily condensation product from condensers attached to paraffin oxidation furnaces. The fractions of the condenser oil to be employed according to the invention are obtained as follows: First, the condenser oil is treated with ammonia, thereby separating it into two layers. Preferably, the lower layer, which has become enriched in saponifiable fractions, is partially concentrated by evaporation. According to the invention, the residue obtained after evaporation of, for example 25% by volume, is used as an addition to the known lubricants of leather.

   The distillation product obtained by evaporation separates into two layers. The lower layer is formed mainly by water. The top layer can be fractionated under ordinary pressure. Low boiling fractions have the character of solvents and can be used as such. The higher boiling fractions of the distillation product can be added to the obtained lubricant as described above.

   The upper layer resulting from the ammonia treatment can also undergo fractional distillation under ordinary pressure, this distillation first passing a fraction which can be used as a solvent, while the higher boiling fractions can pass through first. be added to the leather lubricant. -

12 kg are mixed. condenser oil with 3 kg of aqueous ammonia solution (25%) at a temperature of 60 to 70.

   Two layers are formed, the top layer is about 4.5 kg. and the lower layer about 10.5 kg. The characteristics of these layers are as follows:
Bottom layer 10.5 kg: total fat 51.9%
Acidity index 246.8
Iodine value 4.8
Saponification index 313.7
Hydroxyl number 54.9
Saponifiable 27.3 Unsaponifiable 24.6%
Ash 0.06%
Specific gravity 0.971
Engler viscosity at 20 3.19
Engler viscosity at 50 lr85
Top layer 4.5 kg:

Acidity index 6
Iodine number 17
Hydroxyl number 84
Saponifiable 9.09 / 8.96% Unsaponifiable 82.8 / 83.5
Limit of boiling points 140 - 3400
To continue the treatment, the lower layer is concentrated by evaporation at 60 to 70 under a pressure of 60 mm. of about 25% of its volume. The residue of about 7.8 kg. is used according to the invention to replace the fat in leather lubricants.

   Still other elements useful according to the invention can be obtained in the upper layer from the treatment with ammonia, as well as in the distillation product from the evaporation of the lower layer, by subjecting mixtures of the above mentioned fractional distillation under atmospheric pressure. Elements boiling below 2000 form a by-product, which can be used as a solvent, while fractions which distill above 2000 can be used according to the invention, i.e.

 evaporative treatment, to the lower layer resulting from the treatment with ammonia.

   The lubricating products thus obtained can replace, for example, fish oil in the baths for coating or soaking the leather.

   Examples:
1) Lubrication of the box-calf.

   70 parts of sulphonated beef foot oil are mixed with 30 parts of the lubricant according to the invention. The chromed calfskin, once dyed, is greased with 1.2% of the mixture based on the weight of skin stripped. The treatment lasts 45 minutes, the temperature is 50 C. The leathers, once greased, are left to rest for 24 hours on the easel and their treatment is continued as usual. By way of comparison, calf skins prepared in the same way were treated with a mixture of:
70 parts of sulphonated beef foot oil and
30 parts of fish oil.

   Leather treated with the simultaneous use of the lubricant according to the invention does not show any appreciable difference from normally lubricated leather. However, its touch is a little drier.

  It has a finer grain and waxes more easily than leather greased with fish oil.

     2) Lubrication of the cowhide.

   The oiling of the cowhide tanned with chrome as usual and not dyed is carried out with 3 1/2%, relative to the weight of skin stripped, of the following mixture:
60 parts of sulfonated fish oil;
37 parts of the lubricant according to the invention;
3 parts of the sodium salt of sulfuric acid ester of laurin alcohol.

   The duration of the treatment is one hour, the temperature 50 C. By way of comparison, a mixture of:
60 parts of sulphonated fish oil,
37 parts of unsulfonated fish oil and 3 parts of the sodium salt of the sulfuric acid ester of laurin alcohol.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   There is no difference in the quality of the leather. This result is remarkable, since it is known that fish oil gives particularly body to leather and it is surprising that the product according to the invention has these properties in such a satisfactory manner.

   3) Coating of shiny leather. a) The leather is greased as usual with a mixture of:
40 parts of tallow,
34 parts of fish oil,
6 parts of the lubricant according to the invention,
1 parts mineral oil and
1 part of the sodium salt of laurin alcohol sulfuric acid ester. b) The leather prepared in the same way is greased with: 40 parts of tallow,
30 parts of fish oil,
10 parts of the lubricating product according to the invention,
19 parts mineral oil and
1 part of the sodium salt of laurin alcohol sulfuric acid ester.

     For comparison, another lubrication is carried out with:
40 parts of tallow
40 parts of fish oil,
19 parts mineral oil and
1 part of the sodium salt of the sulfuric acid ester of laurin alcohol.

   Tests 5a and 3b gave the same lubricating effect as normal lubrication. The ratio between the quantity of grease extracted and the quantity of grease incorporated by crushing is advantageous. The leathers lubricated by the product according to the invention are lighter in color than the leathers normally greased with fish oil and give a more uniform impression.

   4) Lubrication of uppers.

   The following mixtures were used: a) 35 parts of tallow, 38.25 parts of fish oil,
6.75 parts of the lubricant according to the invention, 20 parts of mineral oil

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 b) 35 parts of tallow, 33.75 parts of fish oil,
11.25 parts of the lubricant according to the invention,
20 parts of mineral oil. c) 35 parts of tallow,
22.5 parts of fish oil,
22.5 parts of the lubricant according to the invention,
20 parts of mineral oil.

   For comparison, a further lubrication was carried out with:
35 parts of tallow,
45 parts of fish oil and
20 parts of mineral oil.

   The fat blends are melted before use and then introduced through the hollow shaft of the hot air barrel, in which the leathers have previously been stirred for a short time. After about an hour, the fat mixture is well absorbed by all leathers.

  The simultaneous use of the lubricating product according to the invention still slightly accelerates the absorption of the fat, because after 45 minutes the leathers no longer give the impression of being greasy in the barrel. All leathers are easily corrected. Those which are greased with the product according to the invention are lighter in color and more uniform.
