 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI2.3

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Exemple I

  "Process for the manufacture of amidated sufanilic compounds"
It is known to carry out a reaction between the sulfanilamide and aoetaldehyde sodium bisulfite, in which the sodium salt is formed from the aminobenzolsulfonamide -p- [alpha] ethanesulfonic acid. This compound has several advantages over free sulfanilanide and many other known amidated sulfanilic preparations. It is easily soluble in water forming an almost neutral solution. It is of very low toxicity and only slightly tends to form hardly soluble acetyl derivatives which can precipitate in the urinary tract and obstruct them.

   It has now been found that it is possible to prepare compounds which, in addition to the advantages presented above exert a much stronger action on streptococci and, in particular on pneumococci, than the sodium salt of aminobensolsulfonamide -p- - ethane - sulfonic by reacting bisulfite compounds of lower aldehydes, but containing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   however at least 2 carbon atoms in the molecule, with compounds of the. general formula:

 EMI2.1
 wherein R denotes hydrogen or another group, which may be con-
I dense with the bisulfitic compound of the aldehyde and R a hetero-cycli- radical
2 that either aryl or a saturated or unsaturated group of alkyl aralkyl or acetyl, in which the amino and amido groups may optionally contain other substituents.

   We thus obtain compounds of the formula:
 EMI2.2
 in which X denotes an aliphatic residue or again and this, when the aliphatic aldehyde is glyoxal, the group:
 EMI2.3
 while Me is a metal.

   Aliphatic aldehydes, of which bisulfite compounds are mainly used according to the invention, are aldehydes having 2 - 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, for example acetaldehyde, propionic aldehyde, butyric aldehyde, crotonic aldehyde and ethanedial. Compounds prepared with formaldehyde have, on the contrary, shown to be of no therapeutic value.

   In the above formulas, R is preferably a residue
2 heterocyclic, or a saturated or unsaturated acyl group, for example a pyridic, quinoleic, isoquinoleic, thiazolic or thiodiazolic roste, which residues may contain one or more substituents or acetyl.

   As bisulfite, sodium bisulfite is preferably employed, but bisulfites of other metals which do not exert any harmful action on the organism can also be employed.

   The reaction between the bisulfite compound and the sulfanilam® -de compound, can be carried out in any suitable manner, the reaction can be activated by heating the reaction mixture, for example to about 100. Optionally, the reaction can be carried out in a solvent.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Instead of first preparing the bisulfite compound of the aldehyde and then bringing it together with the sulfanilamide compound, it is also possible to combine bisulfite and the aldehyde in question with * the sulfanilamide compound, without causing them to react beforehand. ,
According to one of the embodiments of the invention, the reaction can be carried out in two phases, in which a product of the reaction between the compound of the bisulfitated aldehyde and a compound of the disulfite is first prepared. formula :

The process will be illustrated hereinafter in some examples of execution.

   Example I
A solution of 148 g. of acetaldehyde sodium bisulfite in 150 cm3 of water, is added 255 g. sulfathiazol. The mixture is brought to 100 in a water bath with vigorous stirring. When complete dissolution has taken place, the mixture is cooled. The sodium salt is thus separated from the p- [alpha] ethanesulfonic acid in the form of small crystals, which are then passed through a centrifugal dryer, washed with alcohol and dried.

   Example2
A solution of 104 g. of sodium bisulfite in 200 cm3 of water is added, while stirring vigorously, 60 g of propionic aldehyde and then 270 g. p - aminobenzolsulfonaniide - 5 - methyl - I, 3, 4 - thiodiazol (2).

   Then heated in a steam bath, until everything is dissolved and the thick liquid is then dried in thin layers. The sodium compound of, amino-benzolsulfonamido - 5 - methyl - I, 3, 4 - thiodiazol (2) and p - [alpha] propanesulfonic acid, obtained, forms an amorphous glassy mass, which after pulverization. sation, gives a white powder,
