 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Gear control device for automobiles.

   The present invention relates to a speed control device for automobiles, comprising an operating rod placed parallel to the steering column and capable of rotating and sliding, and it pursues the aim of making possible a simple, inexpensive and operating construction. sure. This result is obtained according to the present invention by the fact that the transmission of the speed control movements, from the operating rod to the gearbox, is effected by a single link per rod, also capable of turning and of turning. slide. This invention offers the advantage that this unique connection is made in rigid members, so that the arrangement of a traction member mounted in a flexible pipe can be dispensed with.

   Thanks to its simplicity, it can also be established with ease in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 existing vehicles. The invention finally offers the advantage that the locking of the gears not engaged in the gearbox is done by itself. Simultaneous commissioning of two speeds is thus completely prevented.

   The drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the invention and shows a speed control.

   Fig. 1 is a side view.

   FIG. 2 is a section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 1.

   In the steering column 1, there is housed the hollow operating rod 3 enveloping the articulated shaft 2 and which can be set in axial displacement and in rotation by means of a lever, not shown, placed near the steering wheel, and can be raised and lowered by rotation about the axis of the steering column. The lower end of the operating rod 3 is connected by means of the drive member 4 exiting through an opening in the steering column 1, to the ring 5 which can rotate and slide on the steering column 1. This ring 5 carries two circular ribs 6 and two ribs 7 arranged axially.

   On a journal 8 provided on the steering column 1 is mounted an angled lever 9 which engages via one of its branches 9 'between the ribs 7, while its other branch 9 "engages between two ribs 10, which extend around a portion of a cylinder 11 which can rotate and slide in bearings 12 provided on the steering column 1. A second angled lever 14, mounted on the journal 13 of the steering column 1, engages by a branch 14 'between the ribs 6 while its other branch 14 "is placed between two ribs 15 which are arranged on the cylinder 11 in the longitudinal direction.

   The cylinder 11 is coupled by an articulated shaft 16 to an operating bar 17 which can rotate and slide in the housing 18 of the gear change mechanism.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 speed to be controlled. The bar is surrounded by a locking sleeve 19 which can rotate about the same axis as the operating bar 17 but cannot slide in the axial direction. The locking sleeve 19 has a longitudinal slot a which has notches in three places, the slot b is on one side of the slot, the notch c on both sides thereof, while the notch d is placed on one side, on the side opposite to the cutout b. Heels 17 ', arranged in pairs, of the maneuver bar 17 are engaged in the longitudinal slot a.

   In the notches b, c and d engage fingers 20 ', 20 ", 20" which are mounted on the operating forks-221, 2211, 22111 which can turn on the' .axles 21 in the housing 18 . These forks 22 ', 22 ", 22" "order couplings 23 which are arranged on the shaft.
24 of the gear change mechanism and which couple in a known manner, not shown in detail, the toothed wheels serving for actuation at the different speeds.

   The device is shown in the middle position.

   All gears are off. If the operating rod 3 is rotated, the ring 5 connected thereto rotates by its ribs' 7 the elbow lever 9. As a result, the cylinder 11 is displaced axially from one or the other. on the other side and drives the maneuvering bar 17 by means of the articulated shaft-16. The heels 17 'of this bar take hold of the finger 20 "of the middle maneuvering fork 22" and drag it. As a result, the maneuvering fork 22 "is rotated in one or the other direction and thus couples the clutch 23 controlled by it towards one or the other side, so that the speed corresponding mechanism is put into service.

   The maneuvering fork 22 'and 22 "' could not perform any rotation since their fingers 20 'and 20"' are in the notches b. And d of the locking sleeveel9.

   If the operating rod 3 is moved axially from the position shown, it rotates by the in-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 via the angled lever 14 the cylinder 11, so that, via the articulated shaft 16, the operating bar 17 is rotated and drives in its rotation, with its fingers engaged in the slot, ¯, the sleeve locking 19. As a result, one of the notches c is brought over the finger 20 ", so that, now, the operating fork 22" is locked.

   At the same time, depending on the direction of rotation of the linkage 11/16/17, the locking marichon 19 is rotated in such a way that one of the fingers 20 'or 2011! is brought into the longitudinal slit a between the conjugate heels 17 '. This movement means the selection of another speed.

   If in this position, the operating rod 3 is rotated, there is again a translation of the parts 11/16/17 so that the operating fork of the selected speed, i.e. 22 'or 22 '' ', is rotated while the other two operating forks remain stationary, because they are prevented from rotating by the locking sleeve 19.

   The invention can also be used for speed change mechanisms in which the maneuvering is not effected by means of maneuvering forks, but by means of maneuvering bars. As these maneuver bars are moved, as is known, by means of a single cam, the maneuver bar must carry only one drive cam.

   The invention can also be applied to mechanisms comprising another number of speeds to be engaged, therefore for devices comprising more or less than three operating means. The turnable and slidable operating rod, which in the illustrated embodiment is housed in the steering column, can also be arranged parallel to it, next to it, or in another position.
