 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  "Process for obtaining lactic acid"
To prepare lactic acid, starch is saccharified with malt or with other auxiliary products, and the mash thus obtained is inoculated, preferably after further dilution, with lactic acid-producing bacteria (lactic ferments ). (mainly B.acidificans). The mashes are left to stand at fermentation temperatures, preferably around 49-50 C. Washed chalk is used to neutralize the lactic acid formed; all the quenching is kept in motion in order to obtain a better neutralization. When fermentation is complete, the mash is left to settle while standing. 14,000 lit fermentation tanks are often used. capacity.

   The sedimentation of the quench lasts about 6 hours. The solution which floats is then decanted and passed through a sieve to separate the coarse spent grains entrained by it. Finally, the solution, still cloudy, is filtered through filter presses. This manufacturing process is extremely time consuming and requires large filter press installations. Until now, mainly for the filtration of the fermented solution, filter presses were used, which worked discontinuously and not - automatically. Filtration of fermented mash causes, even after allowing to settle, difficulties because they contain very finely divided suspended matter and substances.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 these mucilaginous which very quickly clog the filters.

   The invention consists in not filtering the fermented liquid in the usual way in filter press installations, but in subjecting it to the action of centrifugal force, allowing it to be discharged or possibly without / prior, in centrifugation separators centrifuges. It is also advantageously possible to subject the residue / to the action of dehydration centrifuges or centrifuges. These spinners are generally vertical shaft spinners with solid walls; compared to centrifugal separators they are relatively small and are used in several branches of industry to dehydrate or dewater wet materials.

   The two sewers which contain the lactic acid from fermentation in the form of lime salt in solution, are combined and - if necessary after filtration - transformed into pure lactic acid. Centrifugabion residues are also treated in the usual manner.

     EXAMPLE OF IMPLEMENTATION --------------------------
We put 1000 kg. of potato starch suspended in 5000 liters of water and 100 kg is added to the mixture for the purpose of sacoharification. crushed green malt or coarsely ground malt, previously sterilized. After saccharification - and possibly a further dilution eg. up to 10,000 bed. - the lactic ferments are inoculated and, after adding washed chalk, the mixture of approximately fermentable is stirred until the end of the fermentation, at a temperature of around 50 C. The acid quench is then transferred, without leaving it to deposit, in a centrifugal machine.

   The most suitable machines for this purpose are centrifugal separators, that is to say generally centrifuges with horizontal axis and solid walls, which work fully automatically either in one phase or in several (filling, oentrifugation, washing, emptying). The output of these centrifuges is very high and reaches up to 40 m3 of flow per hour. The centrifugation residue is usefully transferred for further dewatering in centrifugal dryers, where it can easily be brought back to a water content of 30%. The flow or drain from the centrifugal wringer is joined to the flow from the centrifugal separators. If these centrifuged liquids still contained residues of spent grains, they should be filtered.

   The clarified fermented liquid is then treated in the usual manner in order to obtain lactic acid.

   A great advantage of the process according to the invention lies in the fact that the filter press installations of the current di-lactic acid manufacturers, which are very bulky

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and require a lot of personnel, disappear entirely 'or can be reduced to a few units which, filter the quench liquid with the air, centrifuged and thus largely free of suspended matter and mucus-like substances, in a time which is no longer than a fraction of the usual filtration time, despite the equal volume.

   Finely divided suspended solids and mucus-forming substances which play a detrimental role in the use of filter presses can be separated from the soaks without difficulty in centrifugal separators.

   Centrifuged liquids can therefore - even if necessary - be easily filtered.

   In addition, it is possible to dispense with letting the fermented mash stand, which in the method employed until now was intended to facilitate the work of filter presses, since the centrifuges also easily separate from the liquid the substances which are deposit for several hours of sedimentation. The preparation of lactic acid can thus be further accelerated, in addition to the time saved by eliminating the filter presses. It must also be added to this that, by the elimination of the sedimentation operation, the sedimentation vessels become superfluous or that, if the fermentation tanks are used, these become more quickly available for a new load.

   The process which is the subject of the invention has the very real advantage, moreover, that the centrifuged quench liquids make it easier to obtain purer lactic acid, owing to the elimination of mucilaginous substances, and that, that one adds the sulfuric acid intended to separate the lactate of lime before. or after the concentration '(process called neutral).

   The separation of the precipitate of calcium sulfate can also be carried out in the same centrifuges. In addition, the sulfuric acid can be added to the mash itself. immediately after the end of the fermentation, since the subsequent treatment in the centrifuges allows to work very quickly,
The lime sulphate is separated by centrifugation with the spent grains; this results in a very substantial simplification of the lactic acid preparation processes hitherto employed, since the second filtration or the second centrifugation is completely eliminated.
